SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH

COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 03 Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a fabulous Holiday with their Families and Friends. The club was certainly abuzz during the Holidays with all the many spirited parties and the beautiful decorations. The Lighting of the Yachts at the docks this year had 20 participants and there were some very well decorated yachts. Congratulations to P/C Harvey Ford’s vessel “Wildkat” for being the winner this year in the “sail” category and to member Tom Coffey for winning the “power” category…way to go! I hope one year the entire Club marina will be aglow. Can you imagine what a site to behold that would be?

this year and I actually got most of my shopping done at the boutique. There were lots of things for everyone’s list and if you missed it, well be sure not to next time. In case you missed it, Tuesday’s “Happy Hour in the Heritage,” has been extended until 7pm and a new Early Bird Special has been instigated out at Pass-a-Grille from 5-6pm every day. Check them both out. You can’t go wrong! I hope you have had a chance to dine in the new Commodore Room. Chef Joseph has put together an incredible menu and it is truly a first class experience. Here’s wishing you all a Prosperous, Healthy and Happy 2016!

Hats off to our Fleet and Port Captains Angela Kowalik and Bert Rachel, along with a special thanks to Larry Jensen for donating the plaque to list the winners of the Sail and Power Boat decorations. The Saltys did a beautiful job with the Christmas Boutique

From the Membership Director I wish all a Happy New Year! As you are likely aware, the Club has undergone significant transitions, changes, and upgrades over the past several years. Today, we can all enjoy great looking facilities, being served by a professional and friendly staff, and thoroughly enjoy a great club experience. Our financials are strong and the Board of Directors continue to plan for the intermediate and longer term future success of the Club. All of us that participate in the voluntary leadership of the Club strive to be good stewards of the rich heritage we are known for. While we look good for today and next year, we still need to look further ahead. Over the last few years, we have brought in an average of 125 new memberships annually. This is a good statistic, but at the same time we have also suffered an equal number of memberships that have not renewed into the next fiscal year. In fact, the net number of total memberships have gradually declined over the past several years. This is where all of us as members come in. Application for membership with the Club is By Invitation Only due to our 501c7 tax status. This means that a prospective member has to be invited to submit their application, and as you know, that application must also be signed by a Proposer and two Endorsers. As a Membership Committee, we have a lofty goal in terms of the total memberships we are looking to add this year. To put it plainly, we need your help! If you know someone who has enjoyed a previous visit to the Club as your guest, invite them to join. It you have a family member that you sometimes bring to the Club, invite them to gain their own membership. If you have a co-worker who may have asked you about the Club in the past, invite them to the clubhouse to show them around.

The 2015 Commodore’s Ball was held on Saturday, November 14th

The evening started with members dressed to the nines taking a step back in time to the era of the Clipper Ships.

All were greeted with a “Welcome Aboard” by some classic sailors.

Guests made their way to the cocktail hour which featured a Vodka Slide run through a Fouled Anchor, Roasted Oysters over open flame and the famous Raw Bar in a wooden boat.

All followed by an elegant sit down dinner and the much anticipated dessert room.

Once guests satisfied their sweet-tooth the dance floor was where the party wound up, dancing to the melodies of the Tom Katz Big Band.

Thank you to everyone who attended. What a grand time it was and we eagerly anticipate the splendor of the Commodore’s Ball 2016!

Happy New Year!

To start off the New Year, I am excited to tell everyone about our January Program, Caladesi Memories, presented by Terry Fortner. Terry is a descendant of Caladesi Island’s pioneer settlers and granddaughter to Myrtle Scharrer Betz, the only child ever born on Caladesi Island. Together with her sister, they have published two award-winning books: Yesteryear I Lived In Paradise, a captivating memoir of pioneer island life by Myrtle Scharrer Betz, and the Caladesi Cookbook: Recipes from a Florida Lifetime. These treasured Florida memories in book form will be available for purchase at the meeting. Proceeds support preservation and education efforts at Caladesi Island State Park. All SPYC members are welcome to attend on a space availability basis. Cruising Fleet members have priority. Reservations required, details below.

Terry Fortner, granddaughter of Myrtle Scharrer Betz, presents Caladesi Memories

“Yesteryear I Lived in Paradise” and “Caladesi Cookbook”

And while we are reminiscing, let me tell you what we’ve been up to…. After the Ball is over, and after the break of morn, we count our blessings during our annual Blessing of the Fleet held on Sunday, November 15. Many SPYC members & their vessels received blessings from our Club Chaplain P/C Bruce Watters, accompanied by our incoming Flag Officers, Commodore Richard Winning, Vice Commodore Robert Birkenstock, and Rear Commodore Joe Klingel and your Fleet Captain (Yours Truly). Since the weather wasn’t as cooperative as we would have liked, the blessings were performed right at the dock. While this happens only every few years, it was actually very special and personal and as Fleet Captain, I was honored to be involved again this year. Thank you all for participating in this historic tradition! On December 5, 2015 we had the Annual Lighting of the Yachts. It’s the 5th event of its kind, but the 1st under its new name. To commemorate, we presented a perpetual plaque to recognize two boaters chosen by mere mortal judges (Commodore Winning, Port Captain Rachel, and Yours Truly again) for their lighted vessels proudly displayed at the event. Winners were Power: Tom Coffey, Good Vibrations and Sail: P/C Harvey & Kathleen Ford, Wildcat. Look for the plaque on the docks. Before, during, and afterwards, we had a great dock party. Thank you all for lighting your yachts, for welcoming everyone to the docks, and for helping ring in with holiday cheer. Special thanks to Larry Jensen for donating the perpetual plaque

Amateur Radio Club by Dick Mordaunt, AB1NI First Place

Our Golf Group played at Bardmoor Golf Club for the November outing. First place team was David Bertaski, Helen Dewalt, Jim McGauran and Gil Gentry. Helen was so excited and said it was the first time she was ever on the winning team. Second place went to Rich Lander, Susan Arsenault, Robert Weir and Mike McDonough. Close to pin were Pam Gentry, Isabel Schoenberg, Jim McGauran (who has been winning quite a lot) and Rich Lander. A new game, closest to the line, was won by Myra McShane. It was another fun time for all players who enjoyed refreshments in the pub afterwards. Bardmoor has a policy to have your first beer for the price of your score; cheaply priced beers were enjoyed by all!!

We had a great holiday get together with 15 ARC members and a guest. Our regular meetings have moved to PAG the third Monday of each month starting on Jan 18, 2016. Meetings will start after the 5:30pm Net. We encourage interested members of any FCYC Club to join us in person or any licensed ham to join our Net. Our social network is our Net when we socialize on-the-air every Monday, on our VHF Net at 17:30 on 147.030 MHz - join us locally or from around the globe on Echolink (a unique method of linking a smartphone or PC with our radios). Let’s all stay in contact from wherever we are in the world and have fun with Amateur Radio. ‘73s. https://sites.google.com/site/spycamateurradioclub/

As usual, our December Christmas Party was the highlight of the year. Decorations, dinner, dancing to the music of Joe Maglio band, singing, fun and prizes provided an outstanding evening for the 70 guests. Susan Arsenault did an excellent job planning and hosting the party. Jack Howard and Nancy Strite were named “Golfers of the Year”.

On November 7th, the Broad Reachers hosted the 44th Annual Commodore Lucas Invitational Ladies Pram Regatta. We had 13 sailors representing seven different clubs from as far north as Dunedin and Venice to the south. The weather was quite warm and the winds were typical “Pass-a-Grille,” fluctuating from 6 to 0 at any given moment. Sailing for the Broad Reachers were Joanne Simmons and Barbara Arnold. We are pleased to announce that Joanne came in first place!! We want to thank Spencer Lucas, who was there to present the trophy and Betty Sanders who helped to organize the event. Congratulations, Joanne!! To celebrate Thanksgiving, the Broad Reachers held their annual Turkey Races on November 21st. The weather cooperated and with four sailors we completed three races. Sailing that day was Joanne Simmons, Nancy Strite, Jeanette Erb, and Carol Hansen. Our Race Committee consisted of Kathy Mansir, Nita George, and Mary Jane Peabody. We also want to thank Steve Peabody and Gene Strite for a wonderful job as our Safety team. On December 3rd, the Broad Reachers hosted our first Interclub of the year. The weather was perfect and the sailors completed three races. Broad Reachers Dee Gill and Barbara Arnold represented our club, but the girls from CYC and TYC took 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places. I want to commend our Safety boat crew, Nita George & Carol Jurca, for overcoming the issues with the power boat, having to manually shift and only having one speed! The girls handled the situation and setting up the course with no complaints.

SPIRIT AWARD: At a Wednesday luncheon in December, Charl Hadfield was presented with the Spirit Award that she was unable to receive in October. This award is given to a Salty Sister who exemplifies the following qualities: contribution to the social aspect of sailing, good sportsmanship, leadership, organization, motivation, involvement, and attendance at Wednesday morning Salty Sister sailing activities. RACING NEWS: In November and December, on the average, there were 34 sailors and 15 RC volunteers on shore or on the water in Tampa Bay and the South Yacht Basin every Wednesday that we had a sailing activity. Sigrid Lovfald and Rosemary Sherman represented the Salties in the Commodore Lucas Cup at Pass-a-Grille. FWSA INTERCLUB NEWS: Our sailors have represented us well at the past Interclubs. Hosted by the Dinghy Dames at Davis Island, Carol Hansen, Nancy Strite, and Dee Gill sailed in the December FWSA Interclub. The Salty Sisters hosted an Interclub at SPSC in December. Our Salty sailors sailing in this event were Prams: Nancy Kadau (2nd Pl) and Dee Gill. Sunfish sailors were: Sue Davidson (1st Pl) and Lisa Avila. SOCIAL: For Thanksgiving, several people dressed in historic attire. L-R Barbara Deininger, Gretchen Tenbrock-Wolfe, Shirley Rigo, Betty Scrim, Shelia Moore, and Gail Falkingham helped create a great Thanksgiving atmosphere. CHRISTMAS BOUTIQUE: Carol Hansen announced that the 16th Annual SPYC Christmas Boutique sponsored by the Salty Sisters was held on Tuesday, December 1st. After 15 years of hard work and organizing the Boutique, Char-Nel Doyle relinquished her duties to the Salty Sisters Boutique Committee. Joanne Simmons headed up the Committee this year with Joy Rudnicki, Lisa Avila, Mary Jane Peabody, Susan Huff, and Carol Hansen work. Several Salties volunteered for this event. Char-Nel graciously offered her guidance as an advisor to the group. The Boutique was a tremendous success almost doubling the sponsorships and with a full house of 46 vendors. All funds raised will go to Junior Sailing and Junior sailing activities. Last year the Boutique was able to send 14 YMCA children to the Learn to Sail summer program held at the Sailing Center. Funds were also used to purchase six new sailboards for the kids. Thanks to the club staff and all the Salty Sistersand Women’s Club volunteers who helped make this a very successful event. CANDY CANE REGATTA: On December 2nd, over 20 sailors sailed Prams and numerous volunteers oversaw the craziness of this regatta. Helen Larsen was awarded a charm for her many successful years of chairing this event. Winners of the Christmas Hat competition were Els Wiemken and Sue Davidson. Judge Cody Spruce had a difficult decision to make with all those great hats! Winners of the three Candy Cane Regatta races were as follows: The Christmas Tree Race: 1st Carol Hansen, 2nd Els Wiemken, 3rd Nancy Kadau and Last - Camilla Kilgroe. The Candy Cane Grab: The most candy canes grabbed award went to 1st Joy Rudnicki, 2nd Anne O’Dell, and 3rd Sue Davidson. Article By: Fred Stansberry November marks the beginning of the Wing Shooters’ fall activities calendar. A number of our WSS members started the season by participating in a two-day hunt at the Dorchester hunting preserve, located in the game rich Georgia Coastal Plain. They enjoyed the topnotched shooting and facilities and brought home a large bounty of wild quail and pheasant.

To kick off the Holiday season, our 2nd annual Christmas Party and Wild Game Feast was held on December 10th. Chef Joseph prepared a fantastic feast that included a starter of Smoked Duck and Wild Cranberry Rillettes with Rosemary Garlic Ciabatta Crostini, accompanied with Hearty Winter Pot au Feu and a Salad of Apple Cider and Brown Sugar Smoked Salmon Carpaccio; with Crumbled Boursin Cheese on a bed of Baby Red Oak Lettuce. For the main course he prepared “Wing Shooter Pheasant” wrapped in Wild Boar Bacon, South Texas Angus Venison, and Spiedini Porcini Mushrooms with Fine Herb Polenta. We finished with a Wild Berry and Rosemary Clafouti. What a Feast!

SPYC once again played host to the High School National Keelboat Championships for the Mendelblatt Trophy over the weekend of November 21-22. 10 top high school teams from around the country qualified to compete in the ten race series sailed the SPYC sonar fleet. Clear Falls High School from Texas came out on top squeaking out the victory by winning the last race. SPYC sailors Hannah Steadman, Josh Dochoda and Kyle Dochoda representing Shorecrest Prep sailed as strong regatta to finish in 4th overall. Over the Thanksgiving Holiday the SPYC Junior Sailing Team competed at the annual Davis Island Yacht Club Thanksgiving Regatta. SPYC was very well represented with almost half the sailors in many of the classes. Our top performer was Anika Boicheff who sailed a strong event to finish in 1st place overall in the Laser 4.7 fleet. This was Anika’s first ever regatta victory. Also sailing in the laser 4.7 were Cameron Delgado in 4th, Emma Shakespeare in 6th, Watt Icely in 9th and Colin Lawther in 10th.

Blessing of the Fleet 2015

Sailing Center

“ FEEDBACK ”

Hi Shawn,

Annual SPYC Blessing of the Fleet took place last year on November 15th, during the Commodore’s Ball weekend. This historical Blessing of the Fleet was held dockside with opening ceremonies held for everyone at the main dock house. Each vessel received a personal individual blessing by P/C Bruce Watters, SPYC Chaplain, accompanied by incoming Flag Officers: Commodore Richard Winning, Vice Commodore Bob Birkenstock, Rear Commodore Joe Klingel, along with Fleet Captain Angela Kowalik who coordinated the event.

Hope your wedding weekend was a great one! We had a very successful clinic this past weekend, serving 63 participants. I have to say that your staff did a tremendous job filling in for you. Jen stepped right in and organized things quite well; gathering up all the staff and volunteers for a short and informative introduction to the clinic. Cody was so helpful as always. I was also very impressed with your new employee (I apologize I cannot remember his name) and his initiative to just jump right in as if he had done clinics with us before. The pair were so helpful throughout the day for both the sailing and kayaking staff. We could not have survived without them! You should be proud of the great set of staff you have backing you. Please thank them again for their hard work Saturday. We did get a lot of positive and constructive feedback from participants. While some thought it was a little chaotic in the morning, most mentioned that it was very well organized. It was a surprisingly smooth day for the amount of individuals we got out on the water. Thanks! Amy Ziegelbauer, CTRS Recreation Supervisor I City of St. Petersburg “Today was the best!! We have two lovely ladies from Eckerd College that took us sailing. They were super sweet. We just love, love, love this event. As a staff and advocate I love the INCLUSION. Thank you everyone!” “Really well organized for such a big event” “Yes! We love the TR staff and Sailing Center Staff. We really enjoyed the volunteers, especially the young adults!” 14

Members and Employees EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH December 2015, Joe Schmollinger

IN MEMORIAM January 2016

Mrs. Joane H. Miller March 4, 1926 – November 2015 Beloved SPYC Member since June 1947

Congratulations goes out to Joe Schmollinger for being voted December’s Employee of the month. Joe has been with the Beach Club for two years now. He is a dedicated and loyal employee who comes to work eager to serve the yacht club members and goes the extra mile to make their visits memorable ones. Joe is a team player always willing to help out his coworkers, or come in early to help prepare for a special event. He is definitely a person we want on our team! Next time you see Joe, give him a big ‘ole pat on the back for a job well done!

FEEDBACK from the FOREDECK What a wonderful, and sharp looking group that attended the GRAND OPENING of the Commodore Room last year!

Downtown Location “The new Commodore Room is everything we had hoped it would be. It’s classier than any other restaurant in the city. We love having a quiet place where the experienced server recognizes your wish for privacy. The food is really special. We like that the menu is unique to the Commodore Room. Tableside service is rare these days and we love a reason to “gussie up” in something other than t-shirts and shorts! So glad our friends told us about this.” ~Mr. & Mrs. McCreary – 5 Stars “This is the BEST Thanksgiving dinner we have enjoyed at the Yacht Club!” – 4 Stars “Congratulations on your redo of the Commodore Room. There are lots of places to eat in St. Pete, but few where you can really enjoy fine service (love the tableside dishes) in an elegant setting. Now we don’t have to endure the noise from the bar or the chatting in the hallway. Now that the food is upscale and we can enjoy it in an intimate dining room, you’ll see us often.” – 5 Stars

Pass-a-Grille Location “Dinner was excellent, great new menu!” – 4 Stars “Excellent in all aspects. New menu’s great!” – 4 Stars

Another enjoyable section that received a lot of attention was the “Car Corral” where owners were allowed to place ‘FOR SALE’ signs on their vehicles and actively sell their classics. This was a great opportunity for potential buyers to view the vehicles and have a chance to directly talk to the owners.

As people wandered through South Straub Park on November 8th, they gazed upon over 250 fantastic, pre-1980 vintage classic cars, boats, and motorcycles. Vehicles were grouped into like categories and memories flooded the minds of thousands of people as they viewed a variety of beautiful classics. The stories the vehicle owners had to tell were ones filled with pride. The event was co-sponsored with the City of St. Petersburg, and the City estimates over 5,000 spectators were in attendance. This show is considered one of the best and most prestigious shows on the west coast of Florida, with vehicles in attendance from as far north as Charlotte, NC, and in FL from distances such as Melbourne, Boca Raton, and Marco Is. There was no charge for admission due to the vast numbers of volunteers and dedicated corporate sponsors. Spectators not only viewed some great classics, but they also enjoyed a variety of food, drinks, and music.

NOW from 4-7pm (hors d'oeuvres 4-6pm) EVERY TUESDAY NOW THROUGH FEBRUARY!

Judges, such as the SPYC Commodore Richard B. Winning, Club General Manager Marc Reydams and several representatives of various SPYC clubs were asked to choose the vehicle they “most would like to take home.” There was also a Mayor’s Choice award from Mayor Rick Kriseman. Judges from the “People’s Choice” group focused in on “originality” as their main focus. Specialty, replica, custom, race, hot rods, military vehicles, motorcycles and boats had different judging criteria. It was another great event, and many vehicle owners went home with a well-deserved trophy.
