SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH

COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 9 – A quick reminder that this is a double issue. That means twice the content…not. This issue covers 2 months - July and August. Earlier in June, we experienced a wonderful exchange in Cuba between six of our junior sailors and young Cuban sailors and we hope to reciprocate here later this year. Thanks to all of the folks who donated sailing equipment for the Cuban kids, particularly Tito Vargas and Renée Athey. By the time you read this, your Board will have met to approve the budget for 2016. We will be seeing a very modest increase in the dues after a zero increase last year. It will be the second lowest dues increase in the past 20 years. And we have budgeted to add 120 new members…a number that we have achieved in 5 of the past 7 years. To add to our success story…for the first time in recorded history (12 years back), the average age of our members has declined. Kathleen told me that unloading the dishwasher would keep me young...and I didn’t believe her. We have found the fountain of youth. Thank you to Amy Spencer, our membership Director, and to Chris Bergstrom, our Membership Committee Chair. Speaking of age…what will be our legacy for this year? The Tiki Bar upgrades? The Commodore Room re-dux? The successes at our Sailing Center? Our new Chef? Landscaping at Snell Isle? Smart cost engineering of club operations by our GM? Improved efficiency of the garage? Yes, those have happened and many more, but to me, the real legacy will be the pleased demeanor of our members, the selfsatisfaction of our staff and the all-around upbeat tenor of the Club. Granted, there are exceptions (with approximately 270,000 annual meal and drink services, i.e., “covers”, we are going to have a few bumps), but our “on base percentage”, to use a baseball term, is very high. And this number doesn’t account for the high satisfaction on our docks and other boating facilities. This grand old Club is very much alive and doing very well. Your race organizers….Tom Rinda, George Pennington, Janet Walker and others have been grinding away behind the scenes and have just advised me that the SPYC has officially been awarded the hosting of the prestigious J-70 Mid-Winters in 2016. This will bring another swarm of 50-60 boats, with 3-4 people per boat, into our warm February embrace. Our race management mentors and minions will be making lists of things to do and Stew and Mary Ahman and their ever-growing list of race committee enthusiasts will be anchored in or

near the Heritage Lounge for months to come planning this event. Please raise your hand to help. And would somebody please let the Chamber of Commerce know that the annual economic impact of our Club is now equal to the Grand Prix…if you successfully challenge me on this statement, I will buy you a drink and appoint you to the Yachting Information Committee. Now the Downtown Waterfront Master Plan (affectionately known as “DWMP” …pronounced “DEEWUMP” in case you want to sound informed) was approved by City Council on June 4. It contains some good ideas, but, as many of you know, some of our hallowed grounds were strangely treated as public property by its advisors and committee members. Without the efforts of Rich Doyle, Alison Hardage, Kathleen Ford and others, the already diminished South Basin would have been further consumed with more dockage, the Sailing Center grounds would have been reduced and our privately owned dockage and dock house in the Central Basin would been completely consumed as public property. It was quite an example of how a committee of well-meaning people can collectively and dangerously defer to each other on basic local information and legal rights, resulting in a product that, in our case, basically removed all of our downtown waterfront facilities. Near the end, the city was responsive and we should be grateful for that (thank you Mr. Dave Goodwin). But since I have the pen, I must say that, after months of analysis and discussion, it is unnerving that such ideas would be within days of approval before being corrected. Alrighty then, enough drama, we won that round handily and we are on to summer fun. Be sure to attend our July 4th Flag Ceremony at sunset and start making plans for the fall. You will be expected to attend your Annual Meeting in October - I will be taking roll and free food and drink after the meeting. Finally, please consider attending the Commodore’s Ball in early November. It is a big feed, yes, but it is a glorious reminder of the history of our great Club, and you receive a gift. See you at the next mark,

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. 2

Cruising Fleet at South Seas Resort

It’s Summer time, how cool is that? The Cruising Fleet keeps busy over these summer months because it’s certainly cooler on the water. In May, we were out for two weeks on our annual Commodore’s Cruise. For those inquiring minds who want to know, here’s just some of what we did and enjoyed: wearing an assortment of hats; getting a little wet in the pool, at the beach, and in the rain; riding around on bicycles, golf carts, trolleys, dinghies, and paddleboards; playing some games like guess the ingredients, croquet, and a scavenger hunt; demonstrating culinary skills on awesome appetizers; attempting to keep waistlines in check (not!) with a wide array of gastronomic delights at new and old favorite restaurants; sipping on cool beverages and signature drinks; testing our skills (and patience) with docking, boat repairs, and making the next bridge opening; getting to know each other just a little better and just so much more. We had 23 boats participating at various ports, along with occasional guests, and all of the bridge officers joined us somewhere along the way. Read our full report in the Cruising Fleet section of the SPYC website and consider joining the Cruising Fleet if you aren’t already involved. Meanwhile, fellow cruisers Mary & Phil Letourneau and Tom & Kathy Daniel cruised to the Bahamas on a rendezvous with their favorite yacht brokers! What a boating paradise! Many of us want to go there with our boats, or on someone else’s, and we certainly enjoy hearing all about our fellow cruisers’ trips.

Ready for the green flash at Pink Shell

In June, we had our cruise to The Field Club and in July we’ll be at our own docks downtown for the 4th of July celebrations. You might hear more about these when Smooth Sailing returns after the summer. Etiquette, Strategies, Rules, Tips, etc. Sometimes a question comes up as to why there are numbers 1-4 on the flower tiles. The numbers are used in Chinese Mah Jongg for the seat positions of the players around the table. At the end of a hand, flowers add to the score depending on whether the number on the flower corresponds to the player’s seat position. If East has flower #1, she gets extra score. If South has flower #2, she gets extra score, etc. However, since we are playing American Mah Jongg, this is not a concern.

Amateur Radio Club

By Nancy Strite

by Dick Mordaunt, AB1NI

Recently, our club members had fun listening to and making contact with the Museum Ships Weekend radio event. About 104 ships from around the world participated including destroyers, submarines, aircraft carriers and even Marconi’s yacht Electra in Italy! Most of us were not physically in the SPYC ham shack. We were in the comfort of our homes, using SPYC Amateur Radio Club’s SSB HF radio in the ham shack through an internet connection. Two of the ships Ralph Warmack, W4TNY (picture facing the camera) contacted were the LS Huron, Lightship in Port Huron, MI and the SS Col. James M Schoonmaker in Toledo, OH. He heard several others in Michigan, Ohio, Alabama and Texas including the USS Nautilus in Groton, CT.

River Wilderness in Parrish was the venue for our May golf outing. The course was in great condition and was enjoyed by the 22 players who attended. A noted feat of the day was another hole in one by Nancy Strite. This is her FIFTH and she says, “It’s luck. Just hit the ball towards the hole and anything can happen.” Witnesses to this and her first place team playing partners were John Arsenault and Greg Fisher. Second place was the team of Larry Heinkel, Gene Strite, Dawn Eckhart and Sonny Croy. Third was Isabel Schoenberg, Karen Lieberman, Dick Vazzano and Joe Hartman. Close to pins were Mike McDonough and Sonny Croy.

Jack Satterfield, W4GRJ talked with the USS CGC Ingram in Key West, FL and the USS Kidd Fletcher Class Destroyer in Baton Rouge, LA Bob Potter, K0UZE (over the shoulder picture) contacted the Civil War Ironclad Gunboat and Museum USS Cairo in Vicksburg,MS, and USS Orleck, a destroyer in Lake Charles, LA. On other days, he talked to special event stations at the Indianapolis 500 and the National Electronics Museum in Maryland, commemorating the anniversary of D-Day. Bob Potter K0UZE tells me “The remote ham shack is terrific for those of us who can’t put up antennas where we live. The rig works very well...excellent reception and clearly from the contacts made gets out very well, too.” If you have questions about the SSB HF radios for your boat or want to join the fun of ham radio, contact us, or join us when we meet faceto-face every third Tuesday at 6pm. We do not meet in June, July and August. We also socialize on-the-air every Monday on our VHF Net at 17:30 on 147.030 MHz where people join us locally or from around the world on Echolink. Let’s all stay in contact from wherever we are in the world and have fun with Amateur Radio. ‘73s. https://sites.google.com/site/spycamateurradioclub/

Drones are a-coming! At our last monthly meeting on May 17 we heard Peyton Yon enlighten us on what drones are all about. Peyton brought along two drones and he was able to disclose for the first time what pilots need to know about the mechanics and computers they possess and how in the future it affects our air space, FAA rules and regulations, not including the fun we can have flying these intricate little machines. He ended by promising we will have another meeting where he will actually fly them. We also heard from John Gilbert, who completed one of his lifetime bucket endeavors by piloting a WWII P 51, giving us the details by the numbers and expounding upon its history helping us win in the European theatre. Those who went on the Cuba trip June 21-28 promised to help make the opportunity to fly our own planes a reality, with of course the approvals of both nations. Hats off to those who pioneer the future... so stay tuned for updates.

May 13th was the Friendship Regatta between the Salty Sisters and Broad Reachers at SPSC. Representing Salty Sisters were Trisha Birkenstock, Dee Gill, Katie Rodgers, and Nancy Strite. Representing Broad Reachers were Barbara Arnold, Barbara Watson, Joanne Simmons, and Carol Jurca. There was a tie between the two teams. Barbara Watson, sailing for the Broad Reachers, broke the tie and consequently, the Broad Reachers were able to take the trophy to PAG for display. In 2001, Peggy Lonnon and her husband, Rick, donated the “Salty Sisters/ Broad Reachers Interclub Perpetual Trophy”. Every year the two clubs compete to retain the right to display the perpetual trophy at either SPYC or Pass-a-Grill.

The Allison Jolly Regatta R

Chairperson Susan Davidson No wind? No problem! The Allison Jolly Regatta/ Florida State Girls’ Championship was held on May 9th at Spa Beach. While waiting to launch the girls tossed Frisbees, beach balls, and cooled off in the bay with inflatable toys. The regatta was supported by the Salty Sisters, who along with additional volunteers, created a beach party and regatta that was fun and well run. Thirty-seven sailors registered to enjoy the competitive camaraderie.

Girl Power

J.J. Smith won the Allison Jolly Trophy & FL State Girls Opti Champ.

Blaire McCarthy, center, won the Laser 4.7 Award. Emma Shakespeare, in white, was 3rd, and DIYC’s A. Hayward was 2nd.

The Fun Race out to the committee boats kicked off with a Lemans style beach launch. Racing in May’s fickle breeze can be tough, but fortunately Mother Nature supplied enough wind for two real races on both courses. When the wind died, the candy boat moved in and gave the sailors another reason to smile. Girl Power was the regatta theme, and along with pink stickers and other SWAG, the girls put their new beach towels to good use. As always, the raffle was a big hit- the sailors loved the creative baskets and hiking bench donated by the Salty Sisters. During the award ceremony, the girls were reminded that Allison Jolly is not just a local sailing legend, but a pioneer whose spirit and skills helped pave the way for women sailing in the Olympics. Once boats were rinsed and put away, gourmet popsicles provided a sweet ending to a FUNtastic day on Spa Beach and Tampa Bay. SPYC winners include: J.J. Smith winner of the Allison Jolly Trophy and FL State Girls Opti Award; Blaire McCarthy, 1st Place FL State Girls Laser 4.7, and Emma Shakespeare, a Laser neophyte, in 3rd. 20

Junior Sailing R

The St Petersburg Yacht Club Junior Sailing Team has had a busy couple of months with sailors competing all over the state of Florida, as well as up and down the east coast and the Midwest. Our SPYC Opti Team has been traveling and continuing to rack up some good results and the high school sailing season is wrapping up with its spring championships. Over Memorial Day weekend, SPYC sailors representing Shorecrest Prep travelled to the Chicago Yacht Club to compete in the ISSA Baker National Team Racing Championships. After an 11 race round robin and a best of 3 final, Shorecrest Prep was crowned the National Team Racing Champions!! Congratulations to Hannah Steadman, Josh Dochoda, Kyle Dochoda, Andrea Ranney-Pace and Nic Baird on a job well done! Two weeks earlier, the Shorecrest Prep team travelled to Annapolis to compete in the High School Fleet Racing Championship for the Mallory Trophy at the United States Naval Academy. Conditions for the event were tough, with light winds and current on Saturday and a building southerly on Sunday. Shorecrest once again sailed with the top group and finished a strong 5th place overall in the two division event. Congratulations to Hannah Steadman, Josh Dochoda, Kyle Dochoda, Andrea Ranney Pace and Nic Baird on a job well done! 4 SPYC Opti sailors qualified to compete in the USODA Team Trials hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami. 229 of the best Opti Sailors were in attendance for this 4-day regatta all looking to represent the USA at the 2015 World Championships in Poland. Our top performer was Heather Kerns finishing in 121st place with a top race score of 4th overall! After a tough start, Anika Boicheff came back strong and finished in 161st, followed by Will Fox in 170th and Ethan Danielson in

181st. Our SPYC team sailed a strong event and learned a ton, and is looking forward to using this at events in the future. The Opti team was also busy over Memorial Day weekend competing in the annual School’s Out Regatta at DIYC. Sailing the 76 boat Opti RWB fleet, Heather Kerns was our top performer finishing in 3rd overall as well as top female. Heather was closely followed by Ethan Danielson in 14th, Bella Shakespeare in 24th, Emily Allen 26th, Anika Boicheff in 31st, Sam Lindsey in 35th, Emma Shakespeare in 36th, Pearson Payne 48th, Sidney Moyer 39th, Madi Icely 54th, Kate Danielson 57th, Logan Rimel 59th, Dorothy Mendelblatt 60th, Michael Noble 61st, Watt Icely 4th and Colin Lawther in 66th. On the green fleet course, Ava Shakespeare was our top performer in 18th place. Also competing were Taylor Brown and Lily Berget. The Opti team also travelled to Jacksonville to compete in the Cowford Cup hosted by the Florida Yacht Club. In the Opti RWB division, our top performer was Emily Allen finishing in 3rd place overall in the 33 boat fleet. Emily was closely followed by Bella Shakespeare in 7th (1st in white fleet), Sam Lindsay in 8th, Watt Icely in 9th, Emma Shakespeare in 10th, Logan Rimel in 13th, Pearson Payne in 14th and Madi Icely in 15th. Ava Shakespeare was our only green fleet sailor and finished in 3rd place overall!! The SPYC Junior Sailing Team Summer Camp is also in full swing!! Kids are learning to sail and windsurf and taking advantage of the great summer conditions on Tampa Bay. Registration is open on the SPYC website and classes are filling quickly. Be sure to get your future sailors signed up before it is too late. We have classes available for kids as young as 5 and as old as 16 years old. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give us a call at the coach’s office - 727.896. 8101.
