COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 08 Summer is here and while we are so fortunate that we have a year round boating season in Tampa Bay, we need to be prepared for various changes to our local weather. Presently as I write we are seeing the tropics heat up with Tropical Storm Colin, so we should be thinking about future storm preparedness. Not just at home, but with our boats and any travel plans we might have. Checking our lines and replacing the tired ones is a good start. For those that missed the Isla Mujeres race mark your calendars for not just next year, but for our 50th anniversary race in 2018. 50 years what a great milestone! This year our Mayor, Mayor Kriseman, attended the ceremonies in Isla Mujeres and yes we have now become a Sister City with Isla Mujeres. This is very unique as this is the second city St. Petersburg has ever formed a Sister with. The first being Takamatsu, Japan; which both my mother and father were in attendance for back in the 60’s. The island folk not only came out for a big celebration after the signing but also to greet the fleet and crews, naming them distinguished guests of Isla Mujeres. I am now waiting on my Mexican passport as the person in charge said shouldn’t be a problem since we have the entire town as witnesses! Along with the signing, Isla Mujeres was named one of Mexico’s 12 magical cities. Truly a great honor for them. I can’t thank Enrique Lima and his family enough for their kindness and support for this race. And I also want to thank George & Beth Pennington, Past Commodore Watters and all the other Past Commodores who have made this one of the best Regattas.
New news… Before we started this last race, your Board met and voted to approve the purchase of a new fleet of sailboats for the Club. After eighteen years we are now upgrading our fleet to J70’s and sometime in the near future they will arrive. My hats off to those on the Sailing Center committee who did their due diligence to make this happen. Stewart Ahman, your Ocean Racing chair, has been diligently working to form a St. Pete to Naples race to commence sometime in the near future. I believe with the reinvent of the St. Petersburg - Habana race, our Regata del Sol and Naples races, we will soon be on the cutting edge of new Ocean racing with our Club. Speaking of Habana, have you seen the recent press? AP wire, Tampa Bay Times and Bay News 9. This is just the start, and believe me there is more on the way! Pass-a-Grille looks to be the “in thing” for all of us day trippers. A lot happening… dockside music on the weekends, new fabulous Bloody Marys, a weekend Dock Master, shrimp by the pound, and various other changes in store. Stay tuned! For you fishing enthusiasts, Tarpon season has been off to a great start with a lot of action starting to heat up along our beaches. No reason to stay at home, get out and have some fun! Try the new bloody Marys at Pass-A-Grille!

Important Changes to Carlouel Yacht Club Reciprocity Commodore Winning recently received written communication from the Commodore of Carlouel Yacht Club (CYC) in regard to their Board of Directors decision to limit FCYC reciprocity with CYC. Commodore Boos, of CYC, has informed all FCYC clubs that their club’s change in policy comes due to their growing membership and space restraints. The change is effective immediately. 1. CYC will continue to offer, subject to availability, two (2) transient boat slips to FCYC member clubs. 2. FCYC members seeking to reserve the referenced slips must first call ahead to reserve the referenced slips, and to the extent same are available, CYC will accept the reservation subject to FCYC guidelines. 3. FCYC members utilizing the referenced boat slips will continue to enjoy reasonable and customary reciprocity with the CYC during the length of their stay. 4. No other means of reciprocity shall be extended to FCYC member clubs; [meaning, arrival by car is not accepted] 5. The subject limitations shall only apply to all FCYC member clubs in Pasco, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties; and 6. CYC reserves the right to implement further limitations that it deems necessary and proper.

Regata del Sol al Sol
Have you ever been to the Daytona 500 and watched a photo finish of Jeff Gordon and Dale Earhart, or been to the Kentucky Derby and cheered on as Seattle Slew won by a nose? This describes the finish at the end of a grueling 500 mile open ocean race where the 2 lead boats were separated by 31 seconds for line Honors--that’s right, only 31 seconds! As the finish line got closer, John Hamm, “Split Decision”, who had been in an ongoing match race with Tony Castagno, “Azzurra”, all the way from St Petersburg, got a better wind direction off of Isla Contoy. When only a few miles from the finish, they decided to put up the staysail, and as all sailors do, they pulled every string, adjusted each sheet, checked the vang, and at last had the whole crew blow into the sails. That started to really help him catch “Azzurra”. As the minutes clicked down to seconds it became apparent that it was not to be, so they broke out the rum and toasted the winner (not really). They were followed not too far behind by John Gardner with his Irwin 38’ Mark 1, “After You”. He went on to win the whole enchilada, fulfilling his long-time dream after many years of competitions. These boats successfully picked the perfect way through the loop current that was the strangest seen in years. You can go on the regatta website at www.regatadelsolal.org then click Satellite tracking, or the YB Tracking site http://yb.tl/ rdsas2016# for the Regata del Sol al Sol and see how they all did over the 5 day spread of boats arriving in Mexico, who were finished and welcomed by a Mexican Gun Boat. But let me start from the beginning, on Friday, April 22nd, we were met with perfect weather with a forecast of possible afternoon storms in the Gulf. Winds were lighter than expected, but could be sailed for a great beat to weather with the majority picking a starboard tack for the start. We had our General Manager, Marc Reydams on the committee boat with Mary Lavash on flags, Beth Pennington on the timer/radio and George Pennington calling the line with myself, Stew Ahman, trying to stay out of the way. There were also 2 VIP boats with a full

complement of distinguished guests along with our Commodore, Richard Winning to see a very exciting start for the 48th Regata del Sol al Sol (The Race from the Sun to the Sun) to Mexico. After the start, as usual, it took about 2 ½ to 3 hours before they could tack through the Skyway, then they got a wind shift to go on a beat to clear through Passage Key Channel and out into the Gulf. At that point it was now 1830 with most competitors forced south of the Rumb line where the wind would be right on the nose and looking at a long night.
The Finish Line As the boats finished over a 4 day period, they were each met at the Finish line with an escort vessel to take them in to the Lima docks to clear customs with the Mexican Authority’s. I cannot give enough praise to these Customs Officials who cheerfully met our tired sailors on the dock no matter what time it was and efficiently cleared them in to beautiful Isla Mujeres. Sister City Ceremony This year we also had a very special event to attend. It was the solemn ceremony of our Mayor Rick Kriseman and the Mayor of Isla Mujeres, Agapito Magana Sanchez, as well as the city council signing a Sister City pact to bind our many years of friendship and the wonderful welcome we have received every year for the past 48 years. The St Petersburg Yacht club was recognized as one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the tourist industry on the island. This was also witnessed by our Commodore Richard Winning as well as a representative for the Governor of the Mexican State of Quintana Roo. At the presentation, the city had declared it a day of friendship and invited all of the residents, as well as sailors to a huge fiesta at the town plaza with dancing, drinks of course and many speeches proclaiming friendship.

Viva la Mexico! HOW CAN WE POSSIBLY LOSE WITH THESE CHEERLEADERS?

He is the organizer, along with his family, on the Mexico end of the regatta and conducts most of the entertainment, awards ceremony and holds a very special cocktail party and welcome for all of the sailors at the Casa De Las Rocas (House on the Rocks). He is a very wonderful friend to the Regata del Sol al Sol and without him, the race would not happen — “Salud” to Enrique. Included in our salute is the Admiral and Safety Officer of the Mexican Navy, who so graciously, sent out their Gun and Patrol Boats keeping the waters and our boats safe. The Gun Boat stays in position for as long as it takes to finish all of our competitors.

The Allison Jolly Regatta brought twenty-three of Florida’s young women sailors together for a weekend racing OPTIs and Lasers. The breeze on Saturday (4/30) filled in at 4pm, allowing each course to complete two races. Sunday (5/1) morning wind enabled OPTI competitors to complete another four while Laser sailors finished six more races. Saturday evening’s raffle included gift baskets generously provided by the Salty Sisters and local merchants – enough for each sailor to take home a raffle item. The evening’s highlight: one OPTI sailor received a beautiful sailboat charm from Bruce Watters Jeweler and one Laser sailor received a two-hour personalized coaching session from Allison Jolly on her 470.

Fleet 801 usually hosts the Florida State Snipe Championships in November before Thanksgiving, and the GASPAR regatta the week before Gasparilla. Fleet 801 has a few loaner boats, which you may contact Steve Lang if you would like to use one. Fleet 801 hosts an abundance of national and international competitions at the SPYC; including the Women’s Worlds in 2010 and the Western Hemisphere Qualifier in 2014.

Normally our annual one-design regatta at the SPYC is the GASPAR Pirate Regatta hosted by Snipe Fleet 801 in January. However, for this year the racing was postponed due to bad weather, so the race was moved to the open weekend of May 14th-15th. A combined fleet of Snipes and Windmills sailed eight races in very shifty NW winds. Let’s give a big “Thank You” to Gloria Davis (PRO) and her Race Committee, who handled the tricky conditions with professionalism and flexibility to provide great racing for our sailors.

Special thanks to Gina Bowden-Pierce (OPTI course PRO), Donna Sue Marks, (Laser course PRO), and the over 80 Salty Sister and SPYC volunteers who helped make this annual all-girls regatta a successful event!
Several honored guests joined us for Sunday’s awards ceremony including our local Olympian, Allison Jolly. Allison entertained the girls with sailing and gold medal stories, encouraging the girls to continue sailing far beyond the youth OPTI and Laser programs. US Sailing Sanctioned Off Shore Seminar with Hands of Training E W AT
ISAF Five Year Certification for Offshore Sailing and Offshore Racing by Kathy Ahern, Yachting Information Chair St. Petersburg Yacht Club again hosted a two day US Sailing Sanctioned Offshore Seminar with Hands On Training April 17, 2016. (SPYC is the only location offering this course in the southeast US). Fortyseven sailors received their ISAF Offshore certification. Our moderator was Chuck Hawley, Chairman of US Sailing Safety Committee. Chuck is a nationally known speaker for Marine Safety and has logged over 40,000 miles on a variety of boats. Our two other key note speakers were Jonathan Kabak, US Merchant Marine Academy- Director of Marine Operations for the USMMA Sailing Foundation and
Chair for the Tall Ships America’s Ship Operations and Safety Committee, LT Chris Branning part of Morning Light Project, Hong Kong Vietnam Race overall winner, All American Offshore Sailing Team, and one trans-Atlantic and 3 Trans Pacific Races. Chris is a Lieutenant in the USCG, Mission Commander in the MH-65D. SPYC is blessed with many gifted members willing to share their time and knowledge. Larry Wissing taught ‘Weather Forecasting’, Bruce Kerns – Fire Fighter and now Arson Specialist and expert witness in the fields of fire investigation, and fuel protection systems for both state and federal courts, gave both a lecture and hands on training on ‘Fire Precautions”. Gerry Douglas- Chief Designer for Catalina Yachts taught ‘Damage Control and Emergency Repairs.’ , member of the SPSC, gave both a Lecture on ‘Crew Health and Emergency Medicine’ with Hands on training. For all those who missed the Seminar, you missed a wealth of knowledge with very valuable hands of experience. Our goal at SPYC is safety and preventing any loss of life while on the water.

Over the weekend of May 14th-15th, the SPYC Junior Sailing Team was well represented with four sailors representing Shorecrest Prep at the annual HS School National Fleet Racing Championships for the Mallory Trophy. Sailing at the College of Charleston Sailing Center, the top twenty teams in the Nation all battled hard for the title of National Champion! In the end, Josh and Kyle Dochoda, Hannah Steadman and Andrea Ranney Pace topped off a great year with a podium finish in third place overall. Over the same weekend, SPYC Juniors Blaire McCarthy and Grant Boicheff were racing a Far East 23R in Shanghai China, competing in the internationally attended China Cup. Teams from four continents were in attendance with many internationally recognized sailors from the Olympics Games, and some of the best know ocean racers. Blaire and Grant finished in 9th place overall and were the top junior team. SPYC was once again well represented at the annual Schools Out Regatta hosted by the Davis Island Yacht Club. Sailing in the Laser 4.7 division, SPYC’s Heather Kerns continued to
impress taking the overall victory with a key win in the final race. Emma Shakespeare continues to climb through the fleet and had a great event with a 4th place finish. Anika Boicheff finished in 5th overall and was followed by Colin Lawther in 6th. In the Laser radial division, Hannah Steadman finished in 3rd overall and was followed by Michael Noble in 8th. On the Opti RWB Course, SPYC was well represented with six sailors competing in the 52-boat fleet. Our top finisher was Emily Allen in 21st place overall. Sidney Moyer finished in 26th, Pearson Payne in 31st, Logan Rimel in 32nd, Dorothy Mendelblatt in 36th and Madi Icley in 37th. In the 35 Opti Green Fleet Ava Shakespeare was our top performer in 10th overall. Closely following Ava was Summer Gilroy in 13th place, followed by Rosie Simpson in 14th and Zachary Jennings in 15th. Also competing for SPYC in the green fleet were Adam and Reid Mendleblatt, Karrington Hansen and Sofia Fuller.

With the Florida sailing season having come to an end, the SPYC Junior Sailing Team will be hitting the road this summer. We will have sailors competing all over the USA, as well as at the Laser 4.7 World Championships in Kiel Germany and the 29er World Championships in Holland. Over the weekend of April 16th-17th, SPYC hosted the annual Green Bench J 24 Regatta. Sailors were greeted on Saturday, April 16th with a big breeze from the east that topped out in the mid 20’s during the 3rd race of the day on Saturday. On Sunday morning, the first race was sailed in 20-25 knots and then the breeze settled in around 15 knots for the 2nd race of the day and final race of the series. Jason Chavez and his crew on Longshot sailed a consistent event to take the overall win by one point over SPYC’s Bill McCarthy on USA 2573. SPYC Head Coach Todd Fedyszyn and his crew on Spoony Tactics finished the event in 3rd. The Spoony team won all 3 races on Saturday, however they suffered a broken halyard on Sunday morning and weren’t able to sail the last two races. A special thanks goes out to event PRO Bjorn Hooper and his team for their exceptional race management in tough conditions as well as Event Chair Bill McCarthy for his annual support of this Florida Championship Series Regatta.
The fleet were treated to great conditions all weekend long with breeze steadily in the 18-25 knot range.
SPYC’s Bill McCarthy was always in the hunt and capped of a great weekend with a 2nd place overall finish.

Adult Fitness Classes
Adult Learn to Sail Classes: All Adult Learn to Sail classes are taught in our Ideal 18’s and include classroom/on-water instruction. This is an introduction to sailing course designed to teach necessary skills to allow you to comfortably enjoy the Ideal 18 within the sailing boundaries in fair weather. Classes offered: June 4-5; June 11-12; June 18-19; July 16-17; July 23-24; July 30-31; August 6-7; August 20-21; August 27-28
Adult Intermediate Classes: The Intermediate Adult Sailing course is the next step in our curriculum after the basic Learn to Sail course. Providing additional instruction on sail trim, anchoring, sailing a course, & other advanced techniques. Taught on various weekends from 8:30am-3:30pm. Cost: $100 per member ($300 per non-member), maximum of six students per course. Classes offered: June 25-26; July 9-10; August 13-14
Paddle Boarding Lessons & Guided Tours: Introductory lesson teaches novice paddlers how to stand up and efficiently paddle around on our club-owned SUP's. We provide the board, paddle, lifejacket, and a friendly instructor to get started. All you need is a swimsuit, sunscreen, and a sense of adventure! Cost: $20 SPYC members, $30 non-members. Classes offered: Sunday mornings 9:00-11:00 am beginning April 3rd, 2016.

The highlight of the last couple of months was the Rainbow Regatta!! The Broad Reachers were thrilled that our IOD team consisting of Captain Anne O’Dell, Judy Clapp, Gail Poffenberger, and Katie Rodgers finished in second place this year!!! The girls competed along with 26 other IOD sailors and sailed in somewhat dicey conditions. Katie decided to try her hand at sailing with a boat full of water, but with Coach Todd’s help, learned how get out, bail and climb back just in time to start the next race!! We are so proud of their second place finish!! Way to go girls!!!

Flying Club by Peter Privitera The events for 2016 under consideration are a fly-in to Marathon, Florida and Fargo Blanco Marina and Yacht Club, Crystal River River Ranch, and Hilton Head, SC with flying for some to Bermuda. All members who wish to attend either by land, sea or air, please contact Peyton Yon at yonrealty@gmail.com for specifics on those events that you wish to attend. Concerning the trip to Cuba, one member has already pointed his six-place Saratoga to Havana enjoying Cuba’s great hospitality. Ron and Rita Bernot incurred costs of $600 for landing, immigration, parking, ramp fees associated with being a pioneer pilot but he says “well worth it for the three of them”. Next stop, they propelled their trusty stead south to Cienfuegos, about two hours by car from the Bay of Pigs where they found more new hotels, gorgeous pristine beaches, Tiki bars and other resorts. The airport there is towered, sans beacon, but boasts a working VOR and of course all controllers are required to speak English. If you decide on flying to Cuba consider the first week in March 2017, when the SPYC after more than fifty years hosts a regatta to Cuba. It is planned to be a major worthwhile event.
On April 23rd, we sailed in our annual Nona Bolster Race in memory of a former Broad Reacher, Nona Bolster. Nona’s daughter Sue Lapp, another former Broad, was on hand with a beautiful cake and some wonderful prizes for the winners. Nona was always known for her two different colored shoes, so the sailors followed tradition. Anne O’Dell won this year and will have her name engraved on the beautiful perpetual trophy. Barbara Watson and Carol Hansen placed 2nd & 3rd places, respectively. Finally on May 7th, after many weather issues and postponing for several months, the Broad Reachers were able to complete the Nancy Lucas Race. Spencer Lucas was there to present the perpetual trophy and the great keeper trophies to the winners of this race. Barbara Watson placed first, Nancy Strite second, and Carol Jurca came in third place. Our Annual Meeting and elections were held on Saturday, May 14th. The 2016-17 officers include: Captain - Carol Hansen, Race Captain - Joanne Simmons, Treasurer - Gretchen Tenbrock-Wolfe, and Secretary - Julia Sorbo. They will begin their new duties this coming September. On a sadder note, Mary Jane Peabody, has moved south this spring and will not be around as much as we would like. Any job that needed to be done, she was right there to volunteer and help in any capacity. The Broad Reachers will truly miss her and hope she comes and visits as often as she can. In April, 24 Broads had a little “going away” party for Mary Jane. We’ll miss you!!!

My wife Sandy (white knuckled over water in a single engine) and I flew on American Airlines from Tampa to Havana in April of this year. You really don’t have to own a plane or boat to get there, we stayed at the Melia Havana and Cohiba, both five star hotels for $250 per night and rode in classic1950 era cabs, ate at great restaurants and stayed one night at the Hemingway Marina; which houses the Cuban Yacht Club where I am a new member for $150 a year. Commodore Jose Miguel Diaz Escrich proudly greeted us wearing his SPYC shirt. While conversing through his interpreter for two hours, he told us many things about Cuba and how very excited he is about the upcoming Regatta events from America including SPYC. He’s also helping us work on normalizing flights to Cuba for private pilots. For more information on this upcoming event to Cuba contact liskriskim@gmail.com. Membership is open to all SPYC members. Theresa Matthews, our new Program Chairwoman, is doing a great job. She has been busy planning fun-filled programs with lots of surprises. Every program is sure to please so mark the third Wednesday of every month now so you don’t miss out! There are only two deviations from 3rd Wednesday – December 14, 2016 and April 12, 2017. September 21 the program will focus on the Boyd Hill Nature Preserve birds and wildflowers. Social time: 5:00 p.m. with the meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. At our May meeting, Sharon Preston-Folta, Louis Armstrong’s daughter, provided us with an amazing program telling us of her journey in the shadows of the great jazz musician. Our Founding Mother Bev Burchard had a milestone birthday recently and a big celebration. Happy Birthday and many more Bev! You look stunning. Pat Seifried organized a transatlantic cruise to Rome that was much enjoyed by about 20 ladies. Our Travel Group is making waves all over the globe! If you are not a member of the Travel Group, talk Pat and see what she has planned. It’s one thing to get a very difficult closed hand (if you play Mah Jongg you can attest) but to get the hand two years in a row is practically unheard of. Congratulations Helene!!

Our Amateur Radio Club assisted the Regata del Sol al Sol committee with the start of the race by providing timely information over our 2-way radios. All of our volunteers met for breakfast to get prepared for the event. This was a great activity for everyone! Our social network uses our Net when we socialize on-the-air every Monday at 17:30 on our radios or in person at PAG. No formal meetings in June, July or August. Blair McCarthy, daughter of Salty Sally McCarthy, was the recipient of the gift certificate for two hours of laser racing coaching with Allison Jolly.
She received this award for exemplifying the following qualities through her membership with either the FWSA or any one of the FWSA Member Clubs: leadership, motivation, organization, participation, involvement, good sportsmanship or contribution to the social aspect of sailing. She gets to bring home the trophy for a year and also received a beautiful keeper necklace.
PRAM SAILING NEWS: PROs Gina BowdenPierce (Sunfish) and Selga Sakss (Prams) set the courses for the FWSA RAINBOW REGATTA hosted at SPSC. Our COP team sailors taking 1st place were Joanne Simmons, Nancy Strite, Trisha Birkenstock, and Lori Leadbetter. Additional COP awards were given to Nancy Strite for 2nd Place Masters (sailing on a Team) and Individual Winner: 3rd Place First in Fleet – Overall (sailing on a Team). Trisha Birkenstock for 3rd Place Masters (sailing on a Team). Lori Leadbetter was awarded the Individual Winner: 1st Place First in Fleet – Overall (sailing on a Team). Our IOD team sailors taking 1st place were Nancy Kadau, Carol Hansen, Iris Mastry, and Dee Gill. Additional IOD awards were given to Nancy Kadau for 3rd Place Masters (sailing on a team) and Individual Winner: 3rd Place First in Fleet Overall (sailing on a Team). Sailing as Individual IODs were Ellen Pavone and Kathy Remke. Ellen Pavone received an IOD award for Individual Winner: 2nd Place First in Fleet - Overall (not on a Team). The FRIENDSHIP REGATTA between the Salty Sisters and Broad Reachers was held at PAG. Salty Sister, Joanne Simmons, won this regatta. The NOTTA MOMMA Pram race winner was Carol Hansen.
This year’s FWSA YOUNG WOMAN SAILOR OF THE YEAR AWARD went to SPYC’s nominee Blaire McCarthy. The recipient of this award should be dedicated to training to compete in the world of sailboat racing. Blaire has many Laser 4.7 accomplishments, such as, the United States National Champion, N A Midwinter’s East 4.7 Champion 2015 and 2016, Florida State Champion, Florida State Girls Champion, and the Sailing World Youth Trophy at the Quantum Key West Race Week. Blaire is also a member of several sailing teams affiliated with the SPYC, the Barnegat Light Yacht Club, St. Petersburg High School, and the St. Petersburg Yacht Club Offshore Racing Team. She has also been involved in the 2015 Cuban Cultural Exchange Team in Snipe Sailing, the San Diego Area Yacht Club Exchange, and she was the only female amateur crewing member on “Yo Momma” a Melges 20 in the Miami Winter Series Team. We are proud to have our SPYC member recognized for her many sailing accomplishments.

CRUISE: In spring, there was an educational program outing to Tampa Bay estuary given by Tampa Bay Watch. SOCIAL: The Salty Sisters have celebrated St. Patrick’s Day and the Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Derby hat winners were 1) Most Unusual: Barbara Deininger for a stunning creation of red roses, black tulle and feathers, 2) Most Creative: Ginny Daniels for her hat decorated with red roses, and 3) Prettiest Hat: Jackie Brown wearing a chic black and white wide brimmed style.

As you know, in May we were on our annual Commodore’s Cruise. But what you might knot know is what went on with some of our 22 fellow boaters: There were rides on bikes, paddle boards, dinghy’s and trolleys, and lighthouse tours, bean races, shell contests, and pirate counting, then some shopping and the ever favorite specialty drinks; not to mention the pirates and ladies in their finery, a shipwreck and lots of other usual (and not so usual) shenanigans. We had so much fun and it was a great cruise, but most enjoyable was the greater weather and camaraderie. A Special Thanks to our Port Directors for all their planning, hospitality and support in making this an exceptional cruise! The Member Guest event held at St. Pete C.C. was a great day with 69 golfers and an additional 7 spouses joining for the poolside cookout, with a free keg of beer! All players were also given a pass to come back and play for cart fees only. Thanks SPCC for providing a memorable day of golf, and to John and Susan Arsenault for arranging the day. Loads of prizes and door prizes were also awarded. Fred Alberg and his 3 guests won first gross and Dawn Eckhart and her 3 guests were second. Net winners were Greg Fisher and guests and Jack Boyle, 1 guest, Norm Huff and Dennis Augur. Maurice Goldman won the putting contest at 4 ½ inches. Hey Motorcycle Riders!! Come and check us out. Our Riders Club meets the 3rd Tuesday of every month in a meeting room at the club. We discuss and plan rides, share stories and photos, and enjoy our time with other enthusiasts. Check in at the reception desk to confirm the meeting location. Recent Rides: April 26, 2016 we enjoyed a 150 mile round trip ride to Solomon’s Castle. With perfect weather, lunch was enjoyed by all on the patio of the Castle’s restaurant. May 3, 2016, another beautiful day, this ride took us to Weeki Wachee., where we enjoyed the Mermaid Show and a boat ride. Future Rides Up For Discussion: A tour of North Carolina in the fall ~ Wayne suggested August or September to avoid getting caught in an early snowfall. St. Augustine, FL ~ The oldest city in the US and known for its Spanish colonial architecture. We may want to visit The Castillo de San Marcos, a 17th-century Spanish stone fortress with views of the St. Augustine Inlet. Homosassa, FL ~ You can tour the scenic Fort Island Trail and Ozello Trail where there are some nice twisty turns, and an ending at a community park/fishing area on Crystal Bay. It is with great pride that we announce Leah Wieter as May’s Employee of the Month! Leah began her employment with SPYC in July of 2015 as Member Services Coordinator and has implemented and improved many benefits for our members. Just to name a few of her achievements: she brought back the group excursions to the Straz Performing Arts Center, increased exposure on Social Media, she is continually focused on making Smooth Sailing better, improved the weekly Monday morning e-blasts, and was instrumental in documenting and coordinating the placement of the new burgee display in the main hallway of the Clubhouse. She also works in assisting many of the Clubs Within the Club like Cruising Fleet and Regatta General. Leah continues to bring innovative and creative suggestions to the forefront to make our member’s experience better and is a wonderful asset to the Yacht Club.
