ow, what a month! We started with the Regata del Sol al Sol race to Mexico. What a terrific event and a true test of blue-water sailing. The regatta was chaired by Beth Pennington who was remarkable in her efforts both here and on the island of Isla Mujeres. The event went off without a hitch; congratulations to Beth and her entire team. I along with my wife Laura and sister-inlaw Karen Park hitched a ride aboard XTC. With owner Tom Glew and his son Eric in charge we had a successful, safe and swift trip across the Gulf. Once on the Island we joined the other sailors and club members who flew in to attend the festivities. Once again the Lima family hosted the SPYC as the old friends we are. If you can find no other reason to go next year, go to hear Judy McFadden do playby-play of the annual basketball game between the Islanders and the Sailors. Once again it was won by the Islanders despite a valiant effort by the Sailors. So put next year on the calendar and if by land or sea join us for a wonderful time on the “Island” We arrived back in St Pete just in time to meet up with the cruising fleet’s annual Commodore’s Cruise romp. Reaching as far south as Naples Sailing and Yacht Club, stops were also made at St Charles and Venice Yacht Clubs. The group spent over two weeks invading ports-of-call throughout Pine Island Sound and points north and 2

The Sailing Center had a full plate beginning with Michael Funsch organizing a day on the water for patients from All Children’s Hospital. Forty-four children with varying health issue were able to join us. What a huge success this was, with the children getting an experience of a lifetime. Congratulations to both the Sailing Center and Salty Sisters who were able to coordinate the Allison Jolly Regatta and All Children’s on the same day! Rounding out the month we hosted ninety area residents with developmental and physical disabilities for a day of kayaking. Also having fun was a group of members who took advantage of our learn-torace program at the Sailing Center. A great success,as they are now racing in the club Sonars.

Congratulations! to both the Sailing Center and Salty Sisters who were able to coordinate the Allison Jolly Regatta and All Children’s on the same day!

south. We caught up with them at the Pink Shell Marina at Ft. Myers Beach then enjoyed dinner at Doc Ford’s Grill. There were the usual tales of errant dinghies, close encounters with marine patrols and closer encounters with the sea bed as well as a couple of first mates with thoughts of bigger boats. Many a cruiser took their turn at organizing a port-of-call; thank you to all of them and a special thank you to Fleet Captain Barbara Weller.

Please check the announcements in this issue and join us for Family Fun Day and the many Fourth of July activities. Of note will be a July Fourth Gourmet evening with a wonderful view of the fireworks.

Regata del Sol al Sol 2014

Marc Reydams, SPYC General Manager and wife Brigitte enjoying the Lynx

SPYC Lynx and yachts heading out The morning of April 25, 2014 started out with very light winds as the Parade of Boats sailed past the Privateer Vessel, “The LYNX” which was the staging area (replacing the Pier because of its closure) for VIPs, Mexican Consul Members and other Guests from the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Due to the light wind, and with the cannons going off, the flag was raised for the competitors to follow the Race Committee Boat down the bay in search of sailable wind. Fifteen boats headed for the Skyway to officially start the race in better winds, and the race committee upon arriving at the “C” Cut Range marker found the winds freshening, and at 11:55 the race officially began. The competitors struggled with light air the first 24 hours and then came the winds, but with a very strong current against them, making the progress very slow. Every year the racing is different, but it always involves a light air portion, strong loop currents, heavy wind, mixed seas, and even a becalming. Four vessels, Sweet Melissa-Christopher 6

Cantolino, Orient Express-Joel Taliaferro, XTC Tom Glew, and 14 Pennies-Roy Rogers changed places many times and were close at times, vying for the coveted First to Finish and Overall Regatta winner. Once again the current proved to be the nemesis. Sweet Melissa came out in front to win both of those trophies and First Overall in the Cruiser Class. Orient Express went on to finish 1st in Cruiser B and 2nd overall; XTC to take 1st in the Non-Spinnaker Class and 4th overall; 14 Pennies – landed in 2nd place Cruiser A and 3rd Overall. The vessel Tattoo with Glenn Benson at the helm took 3rd in Cruiser A, H20-Robert Waddell took 2nd place Cruiser B and won the Best Finish for a new competitor. After You-John Gardner took 1st place honors in Cruiser C and won the Sportsmanship award for assisting another vessel in trouble; Anthie George Alexiou took 2nd in Cruiser C. Blue Heron Russ Hoadley came away with 2nd place in Non-Spinnaker followed by Severance Scott Collins in 3rd place. Due the Corinthian Spirit of this event, Bel Esprit II Ted Riley and Chantey John Hafner were awarded the 3rd place trophies

and were finished in place in Cruiser B and C respectively. Bel Esprit also won the Most Years of Participation in the regatta with 22 years of consecutive competition. Freyja and Great Adventure finished 4th and 5th in Cruiser A. The Friendship Trophy this year was awarded to the Admiral of the Mexican Navy for the Navy’s many years of dedication to helping the Regata del Sol al Sol vessels, and specifically for rescuing Caribbean Amphibian which was in trouble due to mechanical and rigging/ sail issues which resulted in being towed in by the Navy Gun boat. Admiral Pignol graciously accepted the award and called the head of the Search and Rescue division to the podium to share the award with him. 100% of the vessels who started made it to Isla Mujeres this year and there was a large contingency of families, friends, and yacht club members attending the many events on the Island. The Race organizers in Mexico-Enrique Lima Zuno, Jose de Jesus Lima, Maria Boyan, Kin Mendillo, the Mayor of Isla-Agapito

Magana, and many others welcomed them, as always, with open arms; and they were presented with the traditional drinks upon arrival.

Wednesday Mexico Welcomes Sailors at Skippers

The Basketball Game was very exciting but in the end The Isla players won again-I believe the standings are Mexicans 44-Gringos-2, but great fun was had by all. Due to winds that made the area for Race Course for the Amigos Race a washing machine, there was no race and the children were delivered their goodies and gifts either on the dock or at an event coinciding with a school program. We still need more pictures for the website. I know that not everyone who was on the island is in the pictures that follow. So please, send them to me at epennnin09@earthlink.net and we will do another picture spread next month. Also, there will be a story relating the Saga of the Kemps Ridley Sea Turtle. Thank you to all of our race committee for the yearlong involvement and dedication to duty. Cruising Fleet Delightful Longboat Key Moorings Yacht Club was our destination for April’s cruise. Many thanks to our Port Directors Wes and Barbara Compton for organizing this very fun-filled weekend. We had 23 boats make the trip! Many new cruisers to the Fleet as well as those who have been cruising with us for a while. (Please check the longer edition of this article on our web page for all those that made the trip). The weather totally co-operated making the weekend even better. Friday night was a “potluck” – bar--que around the private pool and club house at the north end of the marina. Wes outdid himself grilling chicken, sausage and hamburgers. We could tell he had a lot of practice! Everyone brought a dish to share and no one went hungry. Saturday was a beach-day, dinghy-day, shopping-day with vegging and mah-jongg by the pool. The club provides complimentary shuttle service to the beach and to

St. Armand’s Circle. Several ladies fully experienced the shopping options; while others worked on their tans. Saturday evening was dinner for approximately 50 people at the Tavern restaurant. The ambiance, food and company was great. We want to go back! Back by popular demand is our dinner meeting on June 12th, 2014 at 6 P.M. in the Regatta Room. We had an amazing turn out in March and are really looking forward to happy hour cocktails in the Heritage Lounge followed by the buffet dinner. Please come join your fellow cruisers for a good evening. You can call at Phyllis at 727-822-3873 or go to the website to sign up. June’s cruise is to the Field Club where we will hold our 3rdAnnual Food & Wine Tasting on the docks. Prizes will be awarded for the best cocktail, best appetizer/food and best decorations. July we will “cruise” to our downtown docks for the annual 4th of July celebration. Call Phyllis to get reservations! Looking forward to seeing you on the water … Barbara Weller, Fleet Captain

Golf Group By Nancy Strite

The Member Guest outing at Feather Sound CC was a huge success. Ninety-six golfers enjoyed the sunny day. With this many players there were 3 gross and 3 net team winners (24), with net scores based on the Callaway System. There were four door prizes including a personally signed bottle of Fuzzy Zoeller Vodka. Nine Pot ‘O Gold prizes were awarded and 2 door prizes were won by non- golfing spouses who joined the group for dinner. It was another perfect day on the links. Every player received a travel tumbler. Chi Chi Rodriguez Academy was the recipient of the Golf Group’s $500 donation this year. The Academy teaches at risk children a way to overcome adversity through the game of golf, building character and raising self esteem. IN MEMORIAM Mrs. Dorothy Talbot

by Dick Mordaunt, AB1NI Last month’s big event for the Amateur Radio Club was the send off for the Regata del Sol al Sol with 9 members participating with their 2m handheld radios. Participants were either working on board the Lynx or Tribute, on the ground at the SPYC dock or at the SPYC main clubhouse. Volunteers included organizer and net control Larry, N4MKT; Dick, AB1NI; Ralph, W4TNY; Mary Lou, KA2IWT; Barbara, KN4MB; Frank KJ4ZHY; Dave KJ4WUE; Bob K0UZE; Peter, KM4AEZ; and Joy, KC4LAP. This was a fun volunteer activity for everyone. In addition, two boats in the regata had amateur radio operators on board. One was an SPYC ARC member, Joel, KJ4SME the captain of s/v Orient Express and another operator was Mike WD4DMT a crew member on s/v Chantley. A few of us talked to them on HF or listened as they checked into the Waterways Net or to the Maritime Mobile Service Network. After May we will not have any more in person club meetings until the Fall. But in the meantime we will still meet on the air for our weekly Monday 1730 Net. SPYC ARC socializes on-the-air every Monday at 17:30 on 147.030 MHz where people join us locally or from around the world on Echolink. Let’s all stay in contact from wherever we are in the world and have fun with Amateur Radio. ‘73s. https://sites.google.com/site/spycamateurradioclub/

Junior Activities JUNE 2014 Over the weekend of May 10-11, SPYC sailors representing Shorecrest High School competed in the High School National Fleet Racing Championships for the Mallory Trophy in San Diego California. The top 20 teams from across the country sailed 22 races in light to medium races right off of downtown San Diego. In what was one of the closest national championships on record, Shorecreset narrowly missed winning the title and ended up in third overall. Over the weekend of May 17-18, SPYC Junior Sailors Liam McCarthy, Martin Hood, Emily Wright and Josh Dochoda competed in the J24 Rodeo Regatta hosted by the Davis Island Yacht Club. 15 boats from all over Florida competed in the 7 race series. The SPYC Juniors sailed a consistent series winning the event by 4

Each week WSS members group together and caravan to one of the various Trap, Skeet, or Sporting Clays Ranges around Tampa Bay for a day of fun. There’s always great discussion about many shooting subjects. On the way back, all usually stop for lunch somewhere off the beaten track to share excuses of why we didn’t shoot good that day. SPYC Opti Sailors Heather Kerns and Blaire McCarthy competed in the United States Optimist Dinghy Association Team Trials in Stamford CT. The 4-day event was sailed in the water of Long Island Sound. Sailors had to deal with a wide variety of wind conditions, along with 7-foot tidal swings and even a 25 million gallon sewage spill into Stamford Harbor. In the end, Blaire finished in 56th place in a fleet of 218 and was also the 11 placed female. Heather Kern’s, sailing at team trials for her first time, finished in 165th place! Mango Cheesecakes Yield: 12 servings (1 mini cheesecake) Ingredients: Cooking spray

¾ cup graham cracker crumbs ½ cup granola with oats 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 2 tablespoons honey 1 ripe mango, peeled and cut into chunks 1 (8-ounce) package reduced fat cream cheese 1 cup 2% fat vanilla Greek yogurt 1 egg 1∕3 cup sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 tablespoons cornstarch ½ pint raspberries, for garnish

Method of Preparation:

1) Preheat oven to 350°F. Place 12 foil cup liners in muffin cups; coat with cooking spray. 2) Combine graham crackers crumbs and granola in a mixing bowl. Add honey and melted butter; mix until crumbly. Divide mixture evenly among muffin cups; press firmly onto bottoms. Bake for 8 minutes. 3) Meanwhile, place mango in food processor; process until smooth. Add to small saucepan; cook for 10 minutes or until sauce thickens. Cool. 4) Combine cream cheese and sugar; beat with mixer at high speed until well-blended. Add yogurt, egg, vanilla and cornstarch to sugar mixture; beat with mixer at medium speed until well-blended. Divide batter evenly in prepared muffin pan. Swirl mango sauce into batter. 5) Place shallow broiler pan filled halfway with hot water on lower rack of oven. Place muffin pan on rack above; bake at 300°F for 20 - 25 minutes or until slightly firm in the center. Let cool for 10 minutes; chill.

Happy June!

Let our Summer of Fun Begin! Our ingredient of the month is… Considered sacred in its country of origin, India, the mango has a recognizable mix of green, yellow and red on its waxy skin and is a kidney-shaped fruit with a large seed in the middle. The fragrant golden-yellow flesh of a mango is soft and juicy with a sugary rich, slightly tart flavor. The only downside to this delectable fruit is that its seed traverses the fruit’s length, which means that the larger the mango, the higher fruit-to-seed ratio. However, the fruit can be carefully carved away from the hard, fleshy seed by standing it on its wide end and using a knife to vertically cut away the fruit from the seed. Mangoes are in season from May to September, though imported fruit can be found year-round. While India reigns as the largest producer of mangoes in the world, this exotic fruit is cultivated in temperate climates around the world, including China, Mexico and Brazil, and California and Florida in the U.S. It can be eaten plain, but is a great addition to fruit salads, smoothies, salsas, desserts and chutneys. It can also be added to such foods as stir-fry and soup, but only when warmed gently to not destroy its flavor. Fun Facts • A mango tree can grow as tall as 100 feet.

Mango

• Mangoes are distantly related to the cashew and the pistachio. • More fresh mangoes are eaten every day than any other fruit in the world. • In India, a basket of mangoes is considered a gesture of friendship. • Legend says that Buddha meditated under the cool shade of a mango tree. For those of you travelling to the cooler breezes of the north, happy trails! We look forward to your return in the fall.
