SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH

COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 8 – Breaking News – over each of the last 3 months we have had a net increase in members. This may be an anomaly, but to me it reveals a new trend at the SPYC. Among those new members are 12 intermediates. This too is great news and is evidence that the best way to improve membership numbers is to simply provide good food, good service and good events. Speaking of good events, George & Beth Pennington and Joy Wissing once again produced a grand and safe Regata del Sol al Sol - those that sailed can weave their tales, but those of us who schlepped in by air and hot dogged around the island on golf carts can attest to the unparalleled Caribbean scene. The Isla Mujeres Mayor (or Presidente Municipal) Agapito Magaña and Enrique Lima (of the famous Lima family) treated us like royalty – probably because Kathleen was with me. Judy McFadden choreographed a fun poker run in golf carts and a heartfelt gathering with the Isla kids to distribute hot dogs, drinks, coloring books, Rays hats and pelotas (soccer balls). It was smiles and friendship all around. Special thanks to John Higgins and the Rays for donating 200 Rays hats. If you’ve never been, plan to go . . . next year we’re marking 48 years and then by the 50th you can act like a seasoned visitor consuming exotic drinks at the cantina while watching the Rays beat the Red Sox and the Lightning beat the Red Wings...tropical multi-tasking. The Commodore’s Cruise also occurred in May with much credit to Angela Kowalik for her leadership of those saltwater sojourners – more of that in her column. The Allison Jolly Regatta was held again this year honoring our female sailors. Many thanks to Sue Davidson and the Salties for their continuing inspiration to young women and no thanks to yours truly for my untimely absence. Preparations continue for the Sailing Exchange with the young Cuban sailors in June as we seek to embrace our good neighbors to the south. I have to believe that 55 years in the penalty box is probably enough. Gently used or even not so gently used dingy equipment is being gathered at the Sailing Center to be carried to Cuba with the group to benefit the young Cuban sailors. Please let Shawn Macking know if you have boats, tackle, sails, spouses (gently used only), PFDs, etc. that you you’d like to donate.

On another front, after 15 years of loving labor, Char Doyle and Alison Hardage have decided to hand off the reigns of the Christmas Boutique. As you probably know, in early December every year they, along with volunteers from the Salty Sisters, the Woman’s Club and many others, perform the high wire act of the Boutique with 100% of the proceeds going to our young sailors and their equipment at the SC – over the years, they have funded dozens and dozens of summer sailing class scholarships, bought a Laser with sails and equipment and are presently on the verge of funding the purchase of a fleet of sailboards. I am happy to say that the future of this event is now securely in the hands of the Salty Sisters and its new Boutique Committee Chair Joanne Simmons. Please all mark Tuesday, December 1st for this year’s luncheon and sale. As testament to the volunteer spirit at our great Club, Char and Alison have not fully hung up their cleats and will continue on the committee. Please thank your Board members and particularly your Treasurer, Joe Klingel, as they grind through next year’s budget process. We are on schedule to approve a balanced budget in the next few months. No special session required. Our CFO, Colleen Finney, continues to smoothly guide us through the annual review while receiving high and clean marks by our auditors. Last year’s zero dues increase will be impossible to repeat, but we should all remember and appreciate that respite from the real world of cost of living increases that impacts all elements of our Club operations. Meanwhile, the Club looks great, Snell Isle will look great, the Sailing Center is about to get a lot of work by the City, PAG will get a new road and, apparently, we will all get a PIER. See you at the next mark.

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. 2

IN T H The Rainbow Regatta was held April 21st. We extend many thanks to Barbara Watson for organizing the sailors and helpers for the Regatta. Our Clearwater Pram “Brown Boat” Team consisting of Barbara Arnold, Trisha Birkenstock, Nancy Strite, and Barbara Watson took 2nd Place. Our “Opti/IOD Team” was comprised of Carol Hansen, Lori Leadbetter, Shirley Rigo, and Joanne Simmons. This year there was only a 1st place trophy for the Opti/IOD class because there were only three teams. Our team came in 2nd Place. Sailors competing as “Individuals”were as follows: Tricia Billings sailed as an Individual in the Clearwater Pram “Brown Boat” and Iris Mastry and Kathy Remke sailed as “Individual IOD” sailors. Sunfish Sailors: Our Sunfish sailors were Renèe Athey, Lisa Avila, and Sue Davidson. Our many helpers were invaluable, including our coaches Todd Fedyszyn and Corey Hall. Briny Brothers Art Billings, Dick Remke, Jeff Sherman, and Don Mastry provided assistance; as well as Salties Bonnie Cannard, Bonnie Drake, Nita George, Dee Gill, Jennifer Parramore, Gail Poffenberger, Katie Rodgers, Selga Sakss, and Rosemary Sherman. SOUTHERN GRANDMASTERS REGATTA: This regatta was held April 11th -12th at the SPSC. Other clubs participating in this competition were the Texas Corinthian Yacht Club, St. Francis Yacht Club, and the New York Yacht Club. Participating Salty sailors are Shirley Rigo, Char-Nel Doyle, Joy Rudnicki, Trisha Birkenstock, Diana Sowers, and Helen Larsen. The teams sailed Sonars without spinnakers. CRUISE: CHARL HADFIELD: An Art Walk took place on May 5th. The Art Walk tour included art viewings at the First Gallery on 1st Avenue North and the ARTicles on Central Avenue. After touring, the ladies went to Nitally’s Thai-Mex restaurant at 2462 Central Avenue. Cruise to Art Gallery

EDUCATION: Classes in rigging and flying a spinnaker were conducted, so sailors would be prepared for the upcoming Sonar “Trophy Race”. “Safety at Sea”: Kathy Ahern was in charge of the US Sailing sanctioned “Safety at Sea” course offered on April 18th at SPYC. SPSC Bathroom Decorating: Gail Falkingham, Carole Bardes, and Jean Hurst hand painted nautical designs on both bathrooms at the SPSC. They did a fabulous job, and the bathrooms look so much better.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES: In their Easter bonnets, the Nauticats entertained us well. Several of our servers acted as judges to select our Easter hat contest winners. Pat Auger won the “most beautiful” hat, Carol Hansen won the “most outrageous” hat, and Jean Hurst won the “most unusual” hat. All the ladies sporting Easter bonnets then paraded through the club to show off their finery.

Joining us all weekend were Frank & Pat Bellcourt, crew on Barefoot’n, and also regular family members on Phantasy. On Saturday, Barbara & Heber Weller joined by Iron Dinghy. The crew dined Friday evening in a private room at Pier 22. In addition to terrific food and great service, all enjoyed a lively nautical trivia contest won by Team Kowalik, Stacy, Glover & Bauer. Twin Dolphin’s perfect location at the foot of Old Main Street gave boaters plenty to explore within easy walking distance on Saturday. Destinations included the historic downtown, Saturday Market, Florida Museum and Aquarium, Performing Arts Center, Riverwalk and the blossoming Arts District. Saturday evening saw the crew take over the pool deck for a great potluck cookout, dips in the pool, and enjoying sharing our many stories. Thanks to Port Directors Tim & Dianne Connolly for another great boating weekend! Afterwards, fellow cruisers Randy & Vicki Stacy on Barefoot’n began their journey to the Bahamas, stopping first at Fort Jefferson, Dry Tortugas and then moving up through the Florida Keys. They arrived first at Bimini, then on to Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands. They were “on the hook” most of the time, exploring the Berry Island chain of islands then on to the Exumas and other places of interest in the Bahamas. What a great trip! Mah Jongg Corner - Etiquette, Strategies, Rules, Tips, etc. Looking at a tile before racking it. Some players pick the tile

from the wall and immediately look at it rather than first bringing it to their rack. This is a bad habit because other players may get a glimpse of the tile. It also increases the possibility of a conflict if another player wants to claim the discarded tile. It often takes players a second to decide to claim a discard, so if a tile is grabbed really soon after a discard is made, chances are that after you look at the tile, someone might call the previous discard. What if it was a joker? Too bad for you! You have to put it back if the claim was made before you racked or discarded. Ref:Tom Sloper http://www.sloperama.com/mjfaq/mjfaq09.html

Flying Club

By Peter Privitera

At our April 12 meeting we had Roy McClure A&P ( Airframe & Powerplant) speak about how we should prepare for our plane’s annual physical. He spoke strongly about how we should stay involved and learn the mechanical aspects beginning with an in-depth discussion with the A&P about all specific areas of concern taking notes after each flight, being proactive, and not waiting until problems develop, citing some examples. Roy has lived in St Petersburg for 22 years and his entire life is aviation, being educated as a mechanic during his 10 year tenure in the Air Force. The doctor operates at Albert Whitted Airport, so go talk with him and get to know him. He can certainly help us stay in the air and we thank him very much for this needed information. Some of us may have noticed our logo has been modified. Bill Shivers and I have been working with General Manager Marc Reydams (also a pilot) who pointed out the need to change our logo to conform to Yacht Club standards. Discussions are continuing and your input is essential to develop the final art. During the year members fly to many aviation attractions

Two-thirds Replica of the Benoit

and one such place of interest is the Western North Carolina Air Museum in Hendersonville NC. Here among many other planes you will find a two-thirds replica of the Benoit which hangs in the Florida (Aviation) Historical Museum. So members don’t forget to take those pictures this summer when you are visiting and send or e-mail them to us. At the next monthly meeting, Sunday June 14th, our speaker will be Pat Kays who is arranging glider flying in Zephyrhills and working out all of the specifics and details. If you miss the meeting and still want to “glide” contact Pat at 813.417.8059. You will need to be on list if you want to go. If you haven’t signed up for our flight adventure to Cuba, please do so at this meeting i.e. fishing, sightseeing, cigar factory tour...limited reservations Safe flying. June 2015 Smooth Sailing 7

Amateur Radio Club by Dick Mordaunt, AB1NI The remote ham shack is finally a reality! Members can be located anywhere in the USA, transmit from the SPYC radio and not worry about HOA antenna restrictions. Many thanks to the help from SPYC staff and our ARC club members. We had a training session in our June meeting to help everyone understand how to setup a remote (to SPYC) location with only a computer, internet connection and 2 free programs. We used this setup to talk to people involved in the Regata del Sol al Sol (RDSAS), sailing in the Gulf, New Orleans and locally.

The 3rd Annual Member Guest Tournament was held at Feather Sound CC on April 13. Seventy-two players enjoyed the day and shared in many prizes and games. Three teams were awarded gross prizes and 3 teams received net prizes. There were 3 winners for the putting contest and 6 Pot of Gold winners, 4 Close to Pins, plus our famous 50/30/20 drawing. Lunch was served before golf and dinner afterwards with some of the nonplaying spouses joining the group. Thanks to the Feather Sound staff for making the day run smoothly.

Nine club members used their hand held radios (HTs) on the SPYC docks and on the RDSAS VIP power boats Patient Wader and Here Today. The morning breakfast picture includes Chris Lewis, Joel Taliaferro, Joy Wissing, Frank Mann, David Slazas and standing are Mary Lou Turgeon, Larry Wissing and Dick Mordaunt, missing from the picture is Margie Lewis. Another picture is David and Joel setting up their HTs. Mexican visiting dignitaries with Frank and Joy are shown getting ready to leave the dock for the RDSAS parade of boats and use their HTs. Our speaker for May was Donnie Kuhlman from Fore Seasons Indoor Golf. This is a fairly new, but state of the art indoor playing and practice venue, located in St. Petersburg. There are simulator rooms in which you choose almost any course in the world you would like to play. Great in the heat of the summer or rainy days or anytime you want a climate controlled atmosphere. Lessons are also available. Donnie was nice enough to give all in attendance a coupon for a free bucket of balls and a BOGO on drinks.

Broad Reachers

On Saturday, April 11th, the Broad Reachers held the annual Nona Bolster Race. We had five sailors, nice weather, but light winds. Because of a broken piling, the girls had to take the boats down to the south end to launch, thank goodness it was high tide. Sailing in Nona’s favorite colors, blue and yellow, were Tricia Billings (1st place), Joanne Simmons (2nd place), Barbára Arnold (3rd place), Wendy Savage, and Nita George. A big thanks goes to our Race Committee, Ginny Daniels, Nancy Dunn, Marilyn Wall, and Anne O’Dell. Of course we can’t forget Tove & George Kullman manning the Safety Boat. Sue Lapp, Nona’s daughter, was there with her beautiful trophies handmade with the Sue Lapp famous blue and yellow flip-flops. First, second and third places were presented with trophies, and a gift certificate to La Panache in St. Pete Beach. Also to continue with tradition, Sue baked and decorated a cake in Nona’s colors and her favorite expression “C U THERE.” Nona was one of our original Broad Reachers and will be remembered for a Nona Bolster Race very long time. We did enjoy an informal race day on April 18th with a nice breeze and strong current, a typical PAG sailing day. Barbára Arnold, Nancy Strite, Charl Hadfield, Dee Gill, and Carol Hansen were among the sailors that day. The Broad Reachers’ Annual Meeting and election of Officers was held on May 2nd. Sharing the Captain duties next will be Anne O’Dell (fall & winter) and Nancy Strite (spring & summer.) Race Captain duties, depending on who’s in town, will be Jeanette Erb, Joanne Simmons and Charl Hadfield. Secretary and Treasurer will be Julia Sorbo and Carol Hansen, respectively. At the meeting, Joanne Simmons thanked everyone for a great year and all their help with the sailing and other events. Joanne also thanked Anne O’Dell for doing a wonderful job scanning ALL our documents and getting them posted online for future use. Anne also has organized our photos on Picassa by date and event. Great Job!!!

The 47th Anniversary of the Regata del Sol al Sol began with a few clouds and sprinkles, but opening up to blue skies as the day progressed on April 24, 2015. The Race Committee consisting of George Pennington PRO, Beth Pennington Scorer and Event Chair, Stew Ahman Photographer and Treasurer, Mary Lavash Recorder and Race Apparel, Janet Walker Ocean Racing Chairman and Flags, getting the race started at the 1005 scheduled time. Posted at the start mark were Tommy Wheatley and Friend. The Vessels first paraded by the two VIP vessels Here Today and Patient Wader. Captained by Charlie Evans and Larry Wissing respectively. The precious cargo of Patient Wader consisted of the Mayor from Isla Mujeres, Agapito Magano Sanchez, Secretary Jose Castillo, Mayor Sanchez’s two sons, Fernando and Hernando, and other associates, Commodore Harvey Ford, Rear Commodore Bob Birkenstock and wife Trisha, Joy Wissing, Jack and Linda Albrecht (co-owners PW). General Manager, Marc Reydams. Here Today carried Regatta Committee members Kent & Nancy Irving, Judy McFadden, club members Sheila Moore, Ray Petitt, Karen Lieberman, Shirley Rigo, Sue Brautigam, Marilyn Wall, and other special guests of the regatta. The Evening before the Start, the Skipper’s Meeting and Bon Voyage Party were held. At this event, Mayor Rick Kriseman and Mayor Agapito Sanchez exchanged gifts and Letters of Agreement for the two Cities, St. Petersburg, USA and Isla Mujeres, MX to become Friendship Cities and begin the process to become Sister Cities. After the start, the vessels proceeded uneventfully out of Tampa Bay. However, that quickly changed to winds of more than 20 knots and dead on the nose. This led to five vessels choosing to turn around and go back to various places on the west coast of Florida from the Keys to Tampa Bay. Reasons for returning were varied but the one common connection was the wind on the nose for two solid days and unpredictable wave action.

Ten Vessels continued their journey and arrived safely on the beautiful island of Isla Mujeres. The first boat to finish was XTC skippered by owner Tom Glew’s son, Eric. The last vessel to finish was Bel Esprit II with Ted Riley at the helm. Due to the sailing conditions, this is one for record books with the first finisher coming in on Tuesday – 4 days after the start. Most years at least one boat has finished by early Monday morning and once just before midnight on Sunday. 14

Once on the island, all is forgotten and forgiven, as Renee Benson from Tattoo put it, “I was saying I am never going to do this again. I can’t believe how long it took. But as soon as I stepped onto the dock she said I am going to do this again.” The Gulf of Mexico does offer its challenges and there is not one time that I can remember, since 2002, that anyone has said, “It was exactly like last year.” But the feeling once on the island is “I made it” and that’s what this regatta is all about. Three Boats have already signed up for next year. Congratulations to ALL of all our Competitors for keeping their boats and themselves safe on this journey whether

Twilight Series Races

Weather permitting, we will sail on Fridays until the end of August. Check your sails and your (boat) bottoms. Prepare to get out of your slips for a fun night. There is one race each evening. Count-down begins at 6:25 PM, somewhere around the Pier. Many types of boats come out and sail the course. We have had Moths, 470s, A-Cat, kites and kayaks, just to mention a few. Official competitor classes are Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker and Cruising. We also provide additional scoring for one-designs if at least five boats compete. Club members may race in our Sonars. Simply call the Sailing Center before Friday and reserve a boat. (There is a unique award for the winning Sonar team at the end of the season.) The Notice of Race (NOR) and the Sailing Instructions (SIs) are on our website. 16

This is the most common question, a misunderstanding because the maritime tradition is so different from the land-side protocol. A yacht club is traditionally considered to be a vessel, not a part of the land. While land-bound tradition (and the U.S. Code) holds that no flag is to be higher than the national flag, this is not the case with vessels nor the related facilities of yacht clubs, harbormasters’ offices, etc. On a sailing vessel, the national flag of the ship’s registry (called the “ensign”) is traditionally flown from the outer end of the vessel’s aftermost gaff. The gaff is the spar which supports the top of a gaff-rigged sail. Many yacht club practices are firmly rooted in naval traditions. According to the US Navy’s Telecommunications Procedures, per the chapter “Display of the National Ensign at U.S. Naval Shore Activities”, in NTB 13 (B): 801. b. (4) “Polemast with Crosstree and Gaff – This is commonly called a ‘yacht club mast’. Displayed from gaff. A fine discussion of the inseparable traditions of the navies and yacht clubs is found at the United States Power Squadron’s website. After consultation with the Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary and the New York Yacht Club, they summarized: “The gaff of a yacht-club-type flagpole is the highest point of honor, as is the gaff of the gaff-rigged vessel it simulates. The U.S. ensign alone is flown there. Although another flag may appear higher (at the truck of the mast), no flag is ever flown above the national ensign on the same halyard (except the worship pennant on naval ships).” From time to time, unfortunately, offense is taken by some who do not fully understand this protocol. The Power Squadron website relates that the Palm Coast Yacht Club had a “continuing battle” with a local veterans’ group over just this issue, settled only when the Secretary of the Navy was obliged to write a letter confirming the fact that in the world of yacht clubs, the highest point on the mast is not, in this case, the place of greatest honor.

Grandmasters Team Race Regata

“ FEEDBACK FROM THE

FOREDECK ”

Marc, I wanted to commend you and your entire team for putting on a stellar event for Easter. The buffet and the various activities for the kids were awesome. The food in particular was a big step above what we have experienced in prior years. Very interesting to see how you can provide omelette stations at a high volume event such as this, when in the past we have been told that was not possible with that many people in attendance. Great job, please share with Mr. Chef VanBemmel as well. Chris Bergstrom

APRIL 11 -12, 2015 Chairperson Janet Walker

The St Petersburg Yacht Club was pleased to host our first Grandmasters Team Race Regata, as part of the newly organized Southern Circuit of Grandmasters Team Racing. In this exciting round robin event one team of three Sonars races against three Sonars from an opposing team on a short course shaped like a digital” N”. Team strategies, tactics and boating skills are used against the opposing team while being scrutinized and followed by the race umpires. Teams from New York Yacht Club, Texas Corinthian Yacht Club, St Francis Yacht club and a team from SPYC competed in fairly light oscillating breezes on Saturday and Sunday. Three round robins were completed by Sunday morning, and then the wind gods decided the regata was finished. The Grandmasters event requires the skippers to be 55 years of age and the crew to be at least 45 years of age. New York Yacht Club was the final winner with skippers: George Hinman, Sam Altreuter and Ted Moore. The St. Petersburg YC team put up a valiant effort, but came in with a close 4th place. Results are on the website.

SPYC Skippers were: PC, Rich Doyle, Andy Walford and Steve Lang with crew Char Doyle, Chuck Dawson, Mary and Roy Ericson, Shirley Rigo, Helen Larsen, Diana Sowers and Trisha Birkenstock. This regata could not take place without an excellent race committee. Many thanks go to Shawn Macking as PRO, on Bud Karins’ boat as Signal Boat with Bjorn Hooper, and finish boat, Coast Pilot, with Bob Johnson, Gina Pierce, Kathy Ahern & Barbara Shaffer. Windward mark boat was Bill Ballard on his boat, Osprey, with Tom Pierce. Leeward mark boat was manned by Tom Wheatley, Fairley Brinkley and Janet Walker. Change Boats were Dream Machine with Stu Greene (Saturday) and Not A Snipe with PC Matt and Laura Bryant (Sunday) with Karen Park. The Chief Umpire was Eric Johnson, with Henry Moore, Carrie Green, Skip Ryan, Katie Gluskin Thanks to the SPYC staff and the Sailing Center for a job well done.

“The desserts are beautiful. It reminds me of the Ritz in London and the teas that they put on, but it looks even better than that”.

Dear Commodore Ford, “I thank you, your board and your staff for a most enjoyable dining experience recently in the Commodore’s Room. Our server, Marlene, was so knowledgeable and gracious as was Chef Joseph. Your menu is outstanding and the wine list was a treat. Further, the piano background music added great pleasure to the evening. ~Guest visiting from VBYC
