COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 05 2017 Its Back……. Yes, I am pleased to announce that in March of 2017 after 58 years, the St. Petersburg to Havana Race will return! The Havana Race (affectionately known) was once one of the premier regattas first sailed in 1930 with eleven entries. The yachts were captained by sailors of the likes of George Gandy, Wally Bishop, Lew McMasters to name a few and with boats coming from as far away as New Orleans and Mobile.

It is my hope that not only the Sons and Grandsons of those former participants will make the trip on our first return, but that our Junior Offshore Team will also make a historic trip as well. Yes, we were not the first in recent times to race to Cuba, but we were the Granddaddy of all races when we sailed. A race that has not only been the envy of all sailing enthusiast but the forerunner of some well esteemed ocean races. ¡Deja que comience la regatta! Let the regatta begin!

In 1952 the sailors sailed into a revolution, the first of two (2nd one in “58). The race was rerouted at the last minute before the start in “58 to Miami. Many of our local sailors like W.W. “Doc” Jennings, Ed Spence and Babe Fogarty participated, and some great stories came out of those races in following years. A few I heard from Bill Lineberger who was Johnny Wilhelm’s son-in-law, and both long time participants. At one race my mother was sitting at the bar next to Ernest Hemingway when my father asked her if she knew who she was sitting next to. She didn’t… as she was too focused on someone else. In 1959 the race returned to Cuba and was held for the last time. My father, Dick Winning, was the Commodore that final year and sailed with George Pearson on his boat “Celia II”.

Recently with the change in U.S. regulations we will be setting our courses (284 miles) to Havana. While the exact dates have yet to be determined, your flag officers recently met with Commodore José Escrich, of the Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba and have started the process to bring back the race in all its grandeur. They are just as excited as we are

Reciprocal Program – Guide as to How to Utilize Of the many benefits that membership with the St. Petersburg Yacht Club has to offer, the Reciprocal Program remains one of the favorites among the members. There are hundreds of clubs throughout the world that are available for SPYC members to take advantage of and 35 Clubs throughout Florida. Below are the steps in order to gain access to participating clubs while traveling: • To view the full list of reciprocal clubs, visit www.spyc.org, log in to the members section, and scroll over to the “Club Info” tab, click on Reciprocal Clubs, and then click on the Reciprocal List on the right hand side of the page.

Florida Council of Yacht Clubs: • The St. Petersburg Yacht Club is a member of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs (FCYC). To visit these clubs, all you need is your membership card to gain access and you may charge directly to your membership account while visiting any of the FCYC clubs. • It’s always good practice to call the visiting club ahead of time for reservations. There are certain holidays where SPYC members may not have access. • Each club within the FCYC offers one complimentary night stay in their marina once per month – this includes your home club, SPYC. • Some Clubs may limit use to Non Resident Members.

Clubs other than the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs: • SPYC members traveling outside of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs, must obtain a Letter of Introduction from the Membership Office at least five (5) days prior to travel departure and the dates of travel must be indicated. A Letter of Introduction informs the visiting club the SPYC membership is valid and in good standing. • Payment for services is typically by credit card. • Again, call the visiting club ahead of time for reservations. There are certain holidays where SPYC members may not have access or the club is closed for maintenance or holidays. • Some Clubs may limit use to Non Resident Members.

Golf – St. Petersburg Country Club: • SPYC members may golf at St. Petersburg Country Club once per month at the prevailing member-guest rate. No Letter of Introduction is required and members may call the St. Petersburg Country Club directly for tee times. 727-867-2111 • Dining, pool usage and limited tennis is also allowed.

SAILING NEWS: The Participation Series for Prams and Ideal 18s is planned for mid-February through early March. Coach Todd Fedyszyn will begin six weeks of Pram practice sessions on Wednesdays in February in preparation for the Rainbow Regatta. The regatta is to be held on April 11th at SPSC and will be hosted by the Salty Sisters. FWSA INTERCLUB NEWS: On January 13th, Linda Schwartz and her assistant Ursula Olson from the Luffing Lassies of Sarasota presented a terrific slideshow that told about the many facets of the Florida Women’s Sailing Association (FWSA). On January 20th, Salty Gloria Davis and her committee organized the FWSA General Meeting at SPYC. Nine FWSA sailing clubs from Dunedin to Venice attended this event. Salty Sister Alison Hardage spoke about the history of the Sharpie boat and Clarky Mills, the founder of the Clearwater Pram. There were several Salty Sisters who attended this meeting. On February 3rd, Joanne Simmons (1st Place) and Nancy Kadau (2nd Place) raced at a FWSA Interclub at Treasure Island (TI Tackers - hosts). The Salty Sisters will be hosting one more Interclub at SPSC on February 23rd.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES: On January 21st, Salty Sister Gretchen Tenbrock-Wolfe’s husband, John Wolfe, presented a class on Parliamentary Procedures. There were over twenty-six people in attendance and at the end of the class everyone received a booklet on Parliamentary Procedures. Barbara Deininger & Gail Falkingham

On February 3rd, Steve Vizenor from the St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue instructed a 3-hour CPR class on infant/child and adult CPR, the use of an AED, and how to handle drowning as well as heat stroke victims. Fifty-eight Salty Sisters and Briny Brothers completed the class and will receive a two-year certification through the American Heart Association. SOCIAL: The Salty Sister 65th anniversary luncheon was organized by Gail Falkingham and celebrated on January 27th. Gloria Lewallen was the most seasoned Salty there having joined in 1961. Several ladies dressed in vintage Salty Sister attire. Barbara Deininger and Gail Falkingham dressed in custom designed attire by Helen Larsen. There was a special skit called Medicare for Saltys performed by Jackie Brown, Jan Hunter, Carole Bardes (producer), Janet Walker (producer), Gail Falkingham, and Gloria Lewallen. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the funny skit.

Welcome Aboard!!!

We’re off to a chilly start of the New Year. Our first cruise of 2016 was to the old Florida town of Gulfport, scheduled for January 18-20. The weather forecasters could not make up their minds between gale force winds and dead calm for the weekend, so the day before the trip, we decided to cancel the boating portion and redefined the trip to a cruise by iron dinghy. As it turns out, it was a good call as we experienced both kinds of weather that weekend and our cruising boats remained safe. We chose Saturday for our landside cruise so we could attend the Gulfport’s downtown Art Walk event. The city of Gulfport even modified their trolley route and schedule to accommodate us. We met at the Gulfport Municipal Marina (Hey, this was supposed to be a cruise) to take us downtown so our group could participate in the Art Walk, Art Buying and Art Imbibing at local establishments. Later on that evening we all met at the Boca Bay Grille for dinner and socializing before catching our dedicated trolley back to the marina. A special thanks to Gulfport for their hospitality, and to Chris and Sally Plonsky, our Port Directors for this cruise. The event was well attended by 33 “Iron Dinghy” specialists:

Monday, March 21, 2016, 11 a.m. (please arrive by 10:45). Cuba--You will not want to miss hearing John Boardman, a career Foreign Service Officer for 36 years. His last post was as Deputy Chief of Mission, Hanoi, Vietnam (20042006). He was Deputy Principal Officer at the U.S. Interests Section in Havana, Cuba, from 1997-2000. John will draw on his own experiences in Havana to describe the often surreal life — under a microscope in revolutionary Cuba — in the years after the fall of the Soviet Union. He will contrast this with more recent events leading to the reestablishment of full diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba, and relaxation of the embargo on economic activity — including easier travel for both Americans and Cubans. His wife, Chat, will also be with us and can answer questions of Foreign Service life in Cuba from her perspective. John and Chat are now enjoying retirement in St. Petersburg. February 8th marked our 4th Annual Mah Jongg Tournament. What a fun day it was with cash prizes and door prizes for everyone. Thank you, Barbara Casey, our MJ Maven, for organizing this event.

SPYC Riders Club Is that motorcycle in the garage gathering dust? Come ride with us! Join the SPYC Riders Club, gain new riding partners, rediscover Florida and beyond. The SPYC Riders Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the SPYC to plan new adventures. Some of our members recently enjoyed a ride to the Field Club in Sarasota. The ride originated in St. Petersburg with more members joining along the way to Sarasota. The Florida weather was perfect for this scenic ride and lunch at the Field Club was fantastic. We will have to do this ride again soon. Upcoming Rides…. In March we will ride to Solomon’s Castle in Ona, Florida, take the interesting tour of the castle then relax at lunch, possibly at the “Boat in the Moat” Restaurant right there in the Castle. Ray and Charlotte will lead this ride. Contact any member for updated ride details. A ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway is being discussed for June 2016. Preliminary ideas are to Auto-Train bikes one leg of the trip and ride the other. We need to know an interest level for this ride. Also in the works…. Sturgis South Dakota in August 2016. Bikes would be shipped out and back, but plenty of riding would be done through the western parks throughout the week, and plenty of time to take in the Sturgis Bike Rally. We

also need to know an interest level for this ride.

A chilly, but sunny afternoon in January presented a pleasant day of golf at The Bayou Club for 25 of our members. Two new members to the Golf Group, Rosemary and Jeff Sherman, joined the Scramble format; unfortunately though were not on winning teams. First place, having even par were Larry Heinkel, Sandy Hall and Rich Lander. Second was awarded to David Bertauski, Susan Arsenault, Sonny Croy and Bill Longo. Third was Jack Howard, Pam Gentry, Jim McGourin and Joe Mansir. Straight drive was won by Norm Huff and Close to Pins were David Evans, Jack Howard and John Arsenault. Plans are now being made for our annual Member Guest Tournament on April 7th, at St. Pete Country Club.

One of our favorite annual speakers this month was Bob VanSweden who has received his fifth award as Golf Club Fitter of the Year, and is now in his 24th year of business in St. Petersburg. Bob just attended the annual PGA Merchandising Show in Orlando and told us about several of the new products introduced. One he especially liked was a new grip which absorbs shock to the wrist and elbow; great for arthritic conditions and anyone who tends to hit the ground too hard while swinging! He mentioned the three things necessary for a good game: Properly fitted equipment, Good swing (which may require a few lessons) and Fitness.Having Bill as a guest is always a treat. He mixes humor with fact and golf tips with life tips and swears that women are worse putters than men, except, of course, in OUR Golf Group! Thanks to Helen Dewalt for arranging a variety of speakers for our meetings. 8

On January 9th, the Broad Reachers held their General Meeting at Pass-a-Grille. We had a great turnout and everyone enjoyed lunch afterwards. Captain Anne O’Dell presented Immediate Past Captain Joanne Simmons with her Captain’s photo book. Joanne was quite surprised and happy to receive it. Plans were made for the 5th Annual Splash & Bash to be held this year on Saturday, October 8th, 2016. A suggestion was made to ask the members of the Ladies Beach Club if they would help out this year.Julia Sorbo and Carol Hansen presented the proposal at the LBC January Board Meeting, at which time they voted unanimously to lend a hand. Thank you ladies!!! The Broad Reachers have been quite successful in the past in raising funds for Junior Sailing activities and hope to continue that success at the next event.

On January 20th, the Salty Sisters hosted the FWSA General meeting downtown. Nita George represented the Broad Reachers as 1st Delegate and reported on the past events, sailing and other activities since September. The Broad Reachers had 16 members present at the meeting. Davis Island hosted the next interclub on February 2nd and Carol Hansen sailed representing the Broad Reachers. The weather was wonderful, warm and a little breezy. The Broad Reachers were scheduled to host their second interclub on February 8th, but the weather was uncooperative and provided us with a cold and blustery day. A makeup date will be announced soon.

Next month we start training for the Rainbow Regatta and at that time we’ll select our team to compete. March through June will include the Captain’s Race, Nancy Lucas Regatta, Nona Bolster Race, the Friendship Race, a sail & picnic to Shell Island, and much, much more!!!! As you can see the Broad Reachers have lots of fun, so if you would like to join in, we are always searching for Saturday sailors who would like to come out and learn how to sail a Pram. Valentine’s Day Regatta 2016! E W AT

Over the weekend of February 6-7, SPYC hosted just under 300 sailors for the annual USODA Valentines Day Regatta. The Opti Gold Fleet had 165 competitors, Opti Silver had 82 and the Laser division had 49. Conditions for the event varied, as Saturday was drizzly with variable winds and heavy current, and Sunday we saw steady winds in the mid 20’s. The Opti gold course was able to get in 3 races over the two days and was won by Justin Callahan from the Lauderdale Yacht Club. Justin was followed in 2nd by his twin brother Mitchell and in third was Stefan Baker from the Coral Reef Yacht Club. On the Silver Fleet course, Freddie Parkin from the Riverside Yacht Club came out on top and was followed by Madi Icely of the St Pete Yacht Club in 2nd and Kaitlyn Leibel from Sarasota in third. On the Laser Course, sailors were competing for the right to be crowned the Florida State Laser Champion. In the Laser 4.7 division, SPYC’s Blaire McCarthy took home the win and was followed by Cameron Delgado in 2nd and Callista Hopkins in 3rd, both also from SPYC. In first place in the Laser Radial division was Chase Burwell of Clearwater. Following Chase in 2nd and 3rd were David Perez and Gage Schoenher. In the Laser Standard division, James Pulsford finished 1st, Paul Streater was 2nd and Eric Norman was 3rd. SPYC was well represented with the following sailors competing across all three courses: Madi Icely, Rosie Simpson, Ava Shakespeare, Karington Hansen, Taylor Brown, Sidney Jones, Trent Boicheff, Trevor Hicks, Zachary Jennings, Sofia Fuller, Summer Gilroy, Emily Allen, Pearson Payne, Bella Shakespeare, Dorothy Mendelblatt, Kate Danielson, Sidney Moyer, Ethan Danielson, Analise Delgado, Emily Wright, Sam Tobio, Heidi Hicks, Grant Boicheff, Blaire McCarthy, Cameron Delgado, Callista Hopkins, Emma Shakespeare, Anika Boicheff, Robert Hopkins and Colin Lawther. The Valentines Day Regatta is a huge regatta to put on and we couldn’t make it happen without an army of volunteers. We had just over 70 on the water volunteers helping with Race Committee and Safety, and another 80 volunteers on shore who were helping with everything from regatta check in to parking, meals and launching. A special thanks from the SPYC Junior Sailing Team to all those who volunteered their time to come and help put on such a first class event!

Junior Offshore Team Wins ON

Youth Trophy at Key West Race Week

Four members of the SPYC Junior Offshore Team were selected to compete aboard the brand new Far East 28R at the 2016 edition of Quantum Key West Race Week. Sailing in the crystal clear blue waters south of Key West, 10 races were scheduled over a five-day period from January 18-23. Team members Blaire McCarthy (skipper/helm), Grant Boicheff (main trim), Nevin Avila (head and kite trim) and Sam Tobio (pit, bow) sailed alongside boat owner Matt Wake of Sturgis Boatworks and SPYC Youth Sailing Director Todd Fedyszyn. The team had been training hard all fall, however they had not competed together as a complete team until two days before the event. Day one brought 15-20 knots of breeze and lumpy seas, and the team was looking forward to seeing how the boat would stack up in ORC 2 division. Unfortunately, about 30 seconds after the start of the first race, the port lifeline snapped and Nevin, Todd and Sam ending up taking a swim. The remaining sailors scooped up the three swimmers and the kids immediately started to work on a repair. With a temporary lifeline in place, the team was back on the course for race 2 and 3 of the day and scored a 4/3 in the 9-boat fleet. Day 2 was blown out with 30-40 knot winds, but the team was given the opportunity to take a tour of the 70-foot maxi Bella Mente and the Quantum TP52. Everyone was back on the water for Day 3 in a beautiful 15-20 knot easterly. Another three races were sailed and team was able to win the last race of the day and finish 3rd overall for the day beating many of the faster boats across the finish line. Day Four saw lighter winds with 3 more races, and the team struggled to find their top boat speeds finishing with a 6/7/6. Sail selection was

critical. The general thought at the end of the day was that we should have gone with our bigger headsail, and would have loved to have a bigger kite. The final day of racing was set to be a one-race day, with big breeze in the forecast. We were greeted with 18-22 knots from the south and huge seas. At go time, the breeze had built to 25 knots and by the end of the first leg winds were a steady 30+ knots. The kids handled the boat brilliantly and hit 18.5 knots of boat speed downwind with just the main and the jib. Only five boats stared the last race with the SPYC Juniors finishing 2nd in the toughest conditions of the week. Overall the event was a huge success and the kids showed they could compete on a very high level with some of the best adult sailors in the country. At the final prize giving on Friday, they were presented the Sailing World Trophy for the top youth team; with an average age under 30 and finished 4th overall in ORC 2. The team would like to say a special thank you to SPYC member Grant Dumas for all his hard work with the SPYC Junior Offshore over the last 3 years! Grant has done an unbelievable job preparing the kids to sail big boats and it certainly showed on the waters of Key West in January.

St Petersburg Yacht Club was pleased to host the Ninth Annual Master Driver Team Race this year with teams from across the country. Six teams of six sailors each from Newport Harbor Yacht Club, from Newport Beach CA, American Yacht Club from Rye NY, Texas Corinthian Yacht Club from Kemah, TX, Corinthian Yacht Club from Marblehead, Mass., St Francis Yacht Club from San Francisco, and Annapolis Yacht Club from Annapolis, MD, visited us to sail two sonars on two sonars team race round robin regatta. Each skipper must be 45 years old or Caption: Brent Larlee Commoolder. Tactics and quick reflex timing plus dore of Corinthian YC and Past excellent sailing skills by skipper and crew Commodore Rich Doyle are required to manage and beat the opposing two boat teams over the short “box” course. Each flight lasts about 10 -15 minutes. Sailors were welcomed by Past Commodore Rich and Char Doyle who started this regatta nine years ago. Saturday was a picture perfect day for team racing with 8 to 10 knots of consistent

breeze. Although there was a clear winner for first place with Newport Harbor YC winning, again for the third consecutive year, second place was tied between three teams at the end of the first day. Unfortunately, there was no racing on Sunday due to inclement weather. The tie was broken according to RRS rules. Second place went to Texas Corinthian YC and third place went to Corinthian YC. All results are on www.spyc. org under “Regatta Results”. The winning team from Newport Harbor YC included Chris Raab and John Fuller as skippers, and their team of Tyler MacDonald, Kayla McComb, Mac Mace and Michael Ramming. The races would not be a success without an excellent race committee. The PRO was Tom Farquhar.
