SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH

COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 5 We are in full swing around the Club with a busy schedule of regattas. Recently, we had the Valentines’ Day Regatta and it was a huge success. As always, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club is very proud and honored to host this amazing annual event for all the junior sailors who participate. I would like to offer a special thanks to the Race Volunteers for their dedication and many hours of hard work, making everything go so smoothly! Details on this race and the winners are listed on page 4.

Soon after we will be celebrating Easter on Sunday, April 1st, where the Downtown Clubhouse will feature our Easter Brunch Buffet. There will be face painting, an Easter egg hunt, magic show and the Easter Bunny will also be there for the kids! The Pass-a-Grille Club will feature a full a la carte menu plus some great holiday favorites. Pick one – they are both great!

This month SPYC’s annual Yachting Recognition Awards Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, March 13th. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet, greet, and praise our members whose sailing and yachting achievements have carried the SPYC burgee and name to regional, national, and worldwide recognition.

This concept originated in our Long Range Planning Committee, working its way through House and Grounds, the Finance Committee, Executive Board, and the Board of Directors. The plan was developed as an effort to enhance member experience and as a tool to attract new members. It will be a “Beach Club” concept featuring a heated pool with beach area, expanded casual lounge, new menu, covered outside dining, and Tiki bar overlooking the water. So, if you want to swim laps, soak up some sun, or walk on the beach, we will have a great repurposed facility for your enjoyment. Renderings will be on display in the lobby Downtown and in the lobby of the Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse.

Upcoming Regattas: Crown Cars Regatta – March 9-10; Twilight Series begins March 16; Winter Lightning Championships March Since this issue had already gone to print before the 2018 St. 23-25; SPYC Laser Gulf Coast Championships March 30-April Petersburg-Habana Race and NOOD Regatta took place, I urge 1; Ted Irwin Memorial Pusser’s Rum Cup April 6-7; Suncoast you to be on the lookout in the April issue of Smooth Sailing, and Raceweek April 12-15; Allison Jolly Regatta May 12. via our social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, for an After a year and a half of discussion and planning, last month our announcement of this year’s winners and wonderful photos taken. Board of Directors approved a makeover for the Pass-a-Grille facility.

Next month marks an important milestone for another very wellknown annual regatta – “The 50th Year & Golden Anniversary of the Regata del Sol al Sol”, race to Mexico. Start of the Race is April 27th with awards ceremony on May 4th in Isla Mujeres. All members are again invited to fly down and join us in the week long festivities. Don’t forget about all the great Club events that SPYC has to offer our membership. March is the month where the Grand Prix visits our beautiful city of St. Petersburg. SPYC will be celebrating by hosting our Grand Prix Brunch on Sunday, March 11th, followed by our 13th Annual Grand Prix Garage Party. You can find details for these events in this issue.

On another note, our membership program to welcome back past members who left the Club, in good standing, has had tremendous success! The re-instatement fee is just $500.00, plus pro-rated dues. We have welcomed over 30 past members back to the Club in just over a month!

Additionally, I invite our entire membership to come out and See you around the Club, celebrate St. Paddy’s Day on Saturday, March 17th with our Complimentary Corned Beef and Cabbage Lunch. This is an annual tradition celebrated here at SPYC, and members are more than welcome to partake at either the Downtown Clubhouse, or at our Joseph W. Klingel, Commodore Pass-a-Grille Beach Club location. The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige.

Important Message from Membership Thank you for your membership with the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.  We value our members and hope you value your membership, and each other.  This month, we thought we would address a few reminders on making reservations for Yacht Club events, and how you can help the Club, and your fellow members at the same time. When making reservations for Club events, we ask you to let us know 48 hours prior to the event if you need to cancel or reduce your reservation amount.  This is very important in the preparation of food, putting together the seating arrangements, and in scheduling staff to best serve your needs.  For holiday events (Easter, Mother’s Day, Grand Prix, Commodore’s Ball, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.) where we typically sell out, your reservation will be charged in full if you have not canceled 48 hours prior to the event. Many times we turn other reservations away, therefore, a cancellation fee is required for these special occasions. Lastly, out of respect for your fellow members, if you are attending a Wine Society event and find you cannot attend, please let us know at least 24 hours in advance. There is always a waiting list for Wine Society and by canceling in a timely manner, it gives us the opportunity to accommodate other members wishing to attend. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

2018 Valentine’s Day Regatta a Huge Success! by Todd Fedyszyn – Youth Sailing Director

Over the weekend of February 3rd-4th, SPYC hosted the annual Valentine’s Day Regatta. With just over 250 sailors in attendance, it was sure to be exciting! Competitors could not have asked for a better weekend. Mother Nature was more than generous and provided all three fleets with 3-20 knots of breeze, and strong current providing all sailors with a chance to shine. Consistency across all conditions was key, as was keeping black flag penalties out of your scores. In race two for the Gold Fleet, just over 75 BFD penalties were handed out across 7 general recalls as the fleet struggled to manage the upwind current. In the 165-boat Opti Gold Fleet, all 6 scheduled races were completed. Three races were completed on Saturday in a dying northeasterly breeze, followed by 3 races on Sunday in a building pre-frontal southerly. Lulu Hamilton from the Lauderdale Yacht Club showed good speed across all conditions taking home the Jane Funsch Perpetual Trophy as well as the first placed girl prize. SPYC was well represented in the pointy end of the fleet with Sebastian Spinelli Sax finishing in 8th overall, Guthrie Braun in 11th, Bella Shakespeare in 12th overall and 3rd girl, Kate Danielson in 24th, Sidney Moyer in 32nd, Dorothy Mendelblatt in 35th and Julia Coneely in 36th. Also sailing in the Opti Gold Fleet were Logan Rimel, Ava

Smooth Sailing March 2018

Shakespeare, Taylor Brown, Rosie Simpson, Reid Nelson, and Jack Carter. In the 65-boat Silver Fleet, 5 races were sailed over the two days in similar conditions to what the Gold Fleet had. Current was again a major factor as the fleet had trouble getting off the start line on Saturday afternoon. Davis McLaughlin from the Florida Yacht Club was the overall winner and was followed very closely in 2nd place by SPYC’s John Hartney, Ainsley Braun in 6th, Andrei Imensek in 16th and Sofia Fuller in 18th. Also competing in the Silver Fleet were Adam and Reid Mendelblatt, Cole Rogers, Wesley Wood, Sean Silverthorne, Thomas Guilford and Jad Aberdao. On the laser course SPYC was well represented with Emma Shakespeare taking home the 4.7 crown followed in 2nd place by Ethan Danielson. Cameron Delgado was our top performer in the Radial Fleet in 3rd place followed by Heather Kerns in 4th, Emily Allen in 5th, Colin Lawther in 6th and Heidi Hicks in 7th. Once again SPYC was able to shine both on and off the water. The SPYC volunteer team included over 65 on the water volunteers and 50 shore side volunteers all working together like a well-oiled machine. Thank you to everyone who made this event such a huge success!

January 12th-14th, St Petersburg Yacht Club was proud to host the 11th Annual Master Driver Team Race Regatta with 6 teams participating; each with 6 sailors from across the USA including New York Yacht Club, Annapolis Yacht Club, Texas Corinthian Yacht Club, St Francis Yacht Club, Newport Yacht Club and St Petersburg Yacht Club. It was cold and windy on both days but, very exciting to watch two J70s on one team, battle competitively with two J70s on an opposing team; on a short “box” race course. Tactics and quick reflex timing plus excellent sailing skills by skippers and crew are required. Six Umpires called the rule infractions to keep order on the course. Newport Harbor YC fought hard for first followed very closely by Texas Corinthian YC, and then St Petersburg YC. Our SPYC teams were Skipper David Mendelblatt with Frank McCarthy and John Wallace, plus Skipper Mike Funsch with Bill Icely, and Michael Zonnenberg.

The Wing Shooters Society is made up of some 50 men who enjoy shooting sports, especially sporting clays. We meet the second Thursday night at 6:00 pm and usually all stay for dinner. Every Friday we leave the Club about 0830 to go shoot 100 rounds of clays somewhere about an hour away. We cap off the day with lunch somewhere that has cold beer and Margaritas.

This photo shows the end of a successful hunt by our members. This half day hunt was booked at Three Pines Preserve, part of the Bathle Bros Cattle Ranch, just 20 miles north of Tampa in San Antonio, FL. Hunters are allowed 15 birds each in a half day. The hunt is capped off by a great outdoors cowboy lunch. There is one guide, a jeep, and at least six dogs for two hunters. Dogs only work in 15 minute shifts before being replaced with fresh dogs.

January was a great month for Salty Sister education, but a little chilly for sailing. We did venture out twice during the month, even though one of the days was cut short due to high winds and rough seas. Co-Captain Connie Beckman did a wonderful job of scheduling the month around the weather. Janet Walker taught a session on protest procedures, encouraging us to use them in a good way to reinforce the rules of sailing. The last Wednesday of the month, the Salties had a “craft day” in the lounge making 30 wind wheels.

"Craft Day" Making Wind Wheels

February began the Skipper’s Hat Challenge. Our newest Skipper’s Hat, Nancy Kadau, along with seven others, began competing for this annual event. Approximately 35 Salties and friends carpooled over to the historic Florida Theater in Tampa. The Nancy Kadau and Janet Walker theater, built in 1926, was amazing to see with its romantic Mediterranean design. There were twinkling stars, gargoyles, and a stuffed peacock. On our backstage tour, we found out where and how the beautiful antique organ disappears for performances. For lunch, the group went to Ulele for a private luncheon with menus printed with the Salty Sister logo. A fun adventure was had by all!!

This event hosts the best in light sports aviation from simple home-built, to very sophisticated aircraft such as the Sport Cruiser. And then, there was anything that flies under the LSA rules, including gyro-copters and flying cars. Multiple workshops and guest speakers showed both practically, and verbally, all they knew on how to bend, weld, skin, and fly these varied machines. Those of us who appreciate engineering were amazed at the quality of some of the exhibits - these are serious aircraft. Anyone not uninitiated with LSA (Light Sport Aircraft), they have to meet strict FAA rules, some of which are: Max. Gross Takeoff Weight - 1,320 lb; Max. Stall Speed - 51 mph; Max. Speed in Level Flight -138 mph; fixed pitch props; fixed landing gear; and operation ceiling of 10,000ft. LSA is a great way to get into flying if you can live with the restrictions, but altogether, it was a good day spent with thousands of aviation enthusiasts. Coming up on March 13th is a Collision Avoidance Course at Melbourne Airport. This covers the “big sky” which can get awfully small when multiple aircraft are in the vicinity. Even with ATC support and traffic displays, near misses happen too frequently. It should be a great course for all levels of skills and maybe an excuse to fly again. The next Flying Club meeting will be at the Downtown Clubhouse on March 18th; cocktails at 5:00 pm, meeting 6:00 pm, and optional dinner at 7:00 pm - new members welcomed.

One of our great members with a wonderful car, Stephen Turner, bought this Alfa Spider Veloce brand new in 1977. He visited a Mercedes dealer on 5th Avenue N. intending to buy a Fiat X 1/9, but when he saw this Italian racing green beauty being prepped in the garage, he fell in love with it. The car has been completely restored and has spent time in Princeton, and at the University of Chicago, among other universities (I’m not sure how he handled the cold weather). Steve is now a retired Distinguished University Professor. We’re off to an exciting start with our first meeting discussing this year’s events. As you all know, we will have our Vintage Motor Classic on November the 4th. By the time you get this, our first event, a trip to the Hagerty Show & Shine Car Show at Sebring (that also has the Spring Vintage Classic Race Weekend) will have run at the fabled 3.74mile Sebring International Raceway. Hundreds of classic old race cars competed…quite a show! This event was hosted by SPYC member, Andy Evans – BIG THANKS Andy! This year judge training will take place prior to the actual show; we will have one (or a couple) of our members cars to practice on. Michael Mathis is now our official Photographer, and has volunteered to cover Club events providing some great looking shots of our cars and members -Thanks Mike! Additionally, we’re planning on more events such as a Cruise-in to SPYC-PAG, and a visit to the Classic Car museum in Pinellas Park. This next one is ongoing: 3rd Saturday of every month there is Dupont Cars & Coffee. Cars start arriving at 6:30/7:00 am and everyone leaves by 9:00 am. This is a great venue with more terrific cars than you could imagine. Not all vintage, but some you will never see on the road unless you’re very lucky.

Remember, you don’t have to own a Classic car to join, just come and enjoy. For more info—Stew Ahman, saahman@gmail.com or Stephanie Mucciano, slmitaly15@gmail.com

Our Riders have enjoyed some wonderful local “Lunch Rides” recently, and you’re invited to join us on the next one! The weather was still a bit brisk when we began a recent ride to Ukulele’s Restaurant in Land O Lakes. What better reason to break out those leather jackets than a cool 40 degree morning ride, followed by a great lunch at a table on Ukulele’s patio which overlooks the lake. Upcoming local lunch rides may include: Bunker Hill Winery, Pancho Villa Mexican Restaurant in San Antonio, The Dog House in Riverview and Molly Goodhead’s in Ozona. Some of our Riders will be heading to Daytona Beach for Bike Week, which runs from March 9th-18th. Ray Noyes and his brother Rick (who owns 2 Harley Davidson Dealerships in North Carolina) have been attending on a regular basis since 1985. For more information on our Riders Club contact any member. Please join us for our next meeting on March 20th at 6:15 pm at the Downtown Club.

Saltwater Anglers SPYC Saltwater Anglers Dig for Grouper and Take Veterans Fishing

A beautiful January day provided for a great opportunity to make a run out to 110 feet to Bill Mann’s Red Grouper hole. Despite the full moon, the Grouper were hungry, and we had our two fish minimum in short order. We tried to fish some nearby structure for Snapper, but, to no avail. Captain Gary Spivack took two local Veterans out on his Bertram, along with Bill Mann and Wayne Andrews. We had a great day with two fine people who served our country, caught lots of Black Sea Bass, Grunts, and Porgys. The Saltwater Anglers meet at 6:00 pm on the second Wednesday evening of every month, at the Downtown Clubhouse. Please come join us at one of our next meetings on March 14th and April 11th. Sign-up on SPYC.org, click on the “Clubs” tab and scroll down to Saltwater Anglers, click on the Sign Up & Contact Info Form and get on the list.

Power Boat Competition by Barbara Weller

Seeing Florida By Water … Seems the really cold weather is behind us and it is time to get into our small boats and have fun! With Spring right around the corner we have planned two events so far. In March we will visit Frenchy’s in Clearwater. This is an annual favorite trip and the food and the company is always great. In April we are planning a trailer trip to Lake Beresford Yacht Club at the St. Johns River; and near Hontoon Island State Park. The plan is to launch the boats at Lake Beresford and boat over to Hontoon Island. This will be an overnight trip with arrangements for hotel rooms in nearby Deland. We will publish the dates on our club website along with additional information. SPYC’s Power Boat Competition Committee is also working with the North American Cruiser Association (NACA) for SPYC hosting the 2018 North American Invitational (NAI) in October. This is a prestigious national event attended by experienced yachtsmen who have won Cruising Navigation Rallies in their respective clubs or associations, 16

Smooth Sailing March 2018

and earned the right to represent those clubs or associations in the NAI. Each year a different member yacht club hosts this event and this year it’s our turn! In the 46-year history of the NAI, SPYC has been an integral member and brought home many trophies. This year the tradition continues with associated social activities as well as the competition. Because the competing yachtsmen are from all over the country, and can’t bring their boats with them, SPYC boat owners have generously allowed their boats to be used. We are looking for twelve (12) boats to be used in this year’s competition, and will be reaching out to boat owners. Several things to keep in mind are: you as the boat owner are always on the boat and in control for safety reasons, you drive the boat in the marina, and you can drive during the competition upon the contestant’s request. Our webpage contains more information about participation and the advantages as a participating boat owner. Also if you would like to represent SPYC in this event, we will be holding a series of cruising navigation rallies (with training) to select our representative in the NAI. Let’s bring home the trophy or at least have lots of fun trying! Looking forward to seeing you on the water … Barbara Weller, Chair, Power Boat Competition, barbara. weller221@yahoo.com, 941-356-1680.
