SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH

COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 07 Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes...

Around the Club...

As you read this the Regata del Sol al Sol has concluded its 48th year in beautiful Isla Mujeres, Mexico, and the fleet is returning home. 48 years and closing in on 50! Wow, what a great legacy this Club has with the Island residents.

If you’re wondering what to do with your kids this summer, well now is the time to get your child or children signed up for the Summer Sailing Camp at the Sailing Center or the New Kids Fishing Camp at Snell Isle. Contact Shawn Macking at (727) 822-3113. Heck...even if you’re looking for a new adventure and want to learn to sail or sailboard, give Shawn a call!

Forty-eight years ago there was a sleepy little fishing village located on an island off of Cancun. A bit of a magical place with a very small populace. Matter of fact, Cancun was just a small city then. What’s known as the Hotel Zone in Cancun was nothing but a barrier island, or just one big sand bar. Today Cancun teams with Hotels such as the Ritz Carlton, and Isla has had its growth spurt as well. If you’ve never been, then you need to put the area on your bucket list as there is plenty to do. Swim with the Whale Sharks or the Sleeping Sharks, visit the Mayan Ruins or fish in one of the finest game fishing areas in the world. The islanders always open up their arms in friendship and comradery to the visiting Yacht Club sailors and members who make the annual trek; including basketball games to the Amigo race around the island, with the local children participating on the members boats. In fact the now Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez was once one of those kids sailing around the island. He speaks of those fond memories, and because of that has approached our Mayor Rick Kriseman in hopes of creating a Sister City relationship between Isla Mujeres and St. Petersburg.

Your Entertainment Committee has come up with a fabulous idea and I am so looking forward to Saturday, May 14th, when the lounge will be taken over by Dueling Pianos...that’s right, Dueling Pianos! Oh this should make for a really fun night! They are also planning a Poker Run in June along with a Toga Party sponsored by the Intermediates. (Did I just say Toga Party?) Could you imagine me in a Toga...nope nevermind, I wouldn’t go there. Just the thought is enough to do me in! Don’t forget the Tiki Bar is the place to be after the Friday night races for great libations and entertainment...actually any weekend night it’s great! Lastly, I especially want to thank our staff for taking care of the over 700 members and guests who attended on Easter Sunday...what a great feat by a great crew, and if you missed the Shrimp Boil...well you missed it! Over 200 guests with 80 coming from Sarasota also had a marvelous night (and I heard the grits were to die for)! Which reminds me, Mother’s Day is upon us and I hope you made your reservations. Happy Mother’s Day!

Richard Winning Commodore

Learn to Sail this Summer!

E W AT

If your sailor is aged 8-13, then our Opti Learn to Sail Class is the right one for them. Sailors are taught the basics of sailing and seamanship, knot tying and a little about the weather. With this knowledge, sailors are ready to take their first trip out into Tampa Bay by the end of this class. For the teenage crowd, we have learn-tosail classes offered in our fleet of 420 racing dinghies. Once learning the basics of sailing, students are paired up and taught how to sail this high performance 2-person dinghy!!! The SPYC Junior Sailing Team has a very strong history of producing nationally recognized sailors, and most of them got their start right here on Tampa Bay as a student in the Summer Learn-to-Sail Program! For more information on our Summer Learnto-Sail Classes, be sure to check out the Junior Sailing Page at www.spyc.org or give us a call in the Coaches office at 727-896-8101.

Cruising Fleet News

IN T HE

Welcome Aboard!!! …Argh!!!

Spring is almost over but there’s more cruising to do! Our March cruise (3/18-3/20) to Sarasota Yacht Club found the Fleet living it up, while the Sarasota Yacht did the same at our club. With this prearranged swap, we were able to accommodate quite a large number of boats. On Friday, we enjoyed the facilities at the club, and on Saturday ventured to St Armands for dinner at 3 different restaurants. If only the weather had been a little more cooperative so we could have launched those dinghys! Still, we enjoyed our boats and each other. Thanks to our Port Directors Ed and Isabel Hanna for all the arrangements. The following cruisers made the March cruise: Brian & Angela Kowalik on Marquesa Ed & Isabel Hanna on Isabella Les & Nancy Bauer on Bella Vita Ray & Charlotte Noyes on Bitter Sweet Kent & Marcia Larson on Final One Phil & Mary Letourneau on Silver Lining Elwyn & Carol Segrest on Fish E Business Steve & Charlotte Miller on Charlotte Marie John & Linda Albrecht on Patient Wader Richard & Judi Phagan on Phantasy Ken & Corrine St. Jean on Phantom Joop & Annemiek van der Krabben on Woodland Biff & Stephanie Judd on BareFootin’ Roy & Jeannie Chapman on Blue Eyes Steve & Dian Ravenel on Moondancer John & Nancy Dunn on Nan Sea J Barbara & Heber Weller on Clifton Arthur & Rose Molkentin by “iron dinghy”

Docktails – the key ingredient to long lasting memories!!

Our April cruise (4/15-4/17) was to Little Harbor Marina. After Friday’s dinner at the facility restaurants, several of the group were scheduled for a dinghy outing on Saturday. Afterwards, it was the not-so usual International Food Bazar where everyone got to impress with their culinary skills. Thanks to Richard and Judi Phagan, our Port Directors for April. In May (while you are reading this) our Fleet is off on the extended annual Commodore’s Cruise where we will be having fun noshing and imbibing up and down the west coast of Florida. We will have lots of stories to tell when we return, and some we will keep to ourselves! Check out our route! Upcoming events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy include: • Commodore’s Cruise – May 1-15, with our Kickoff on 4/29 • Cruising Fleet Luncheon Meeting – Thursday, June 9 • Cruise to Venice Yacht Club – June 24-26 Because we are off cruising, there is no meeting in May. But we will all be back in time for our Cruising Fleet meeting in June, a Luncheon Meeting on Thursday, June 9 at noon. Our June program features our own Tim and Dianne Connolly who will share their experiences with us Rafting the Grand Canyon – FREAKING AWSOME!!!! Our early April meeting will not be included in this report, but it was a special night of hors d’oeuvres and camaraderie for members only. The pairings and finalizing of the Member Guest Tournament were announced. It was guaranteed to be a fun night, and our meetings are always in conjunction with Tuesday night Happy Hour. A group of 25 members played in March at nearby Cove Cay Golf Club. Winners were: 1st, Joe Hartman, Susan Arsenault, Jack Howard; 2nd, Rosemary Sherman, Bill Longo, Bob Bedford, Joe Mansir; 3rd, Herb Anderson, Helen Dewalt, Mike McDonough. There were 6 Par 3 holes with 6 winners, all pictured. It was a gorgeous day and everyone enjoyed the good food, and $7 pitchers of beer after play.

Some of our members provided a Marine HF Symposium recently to help RDSAS captains and other sailors understand and use HF radio. We had 15 people attend and we now have 3 new members in our Amateur Radio Club (ARC)! Our social network is our Net when we socialize on-the-air every Monday at 17:30 on VHF 147.030 MHz. No meetings in June, July or August. Let’s all stay in contact from wherever we are in the world and have fun with Amateur Radio. ‘73s. https://sites.google.com/site/spycamateurradioclub/

Our official Captain’s Race was held on March 12th. We had seven sailors: Captain Anne O’Dell, Barbara Arnold, Dee Gill, Trisha Billings, Joanne Simmons, Carol Jurca, and Jeanette Erb. It was a great day to be on the water. We need to include a note of appreciation to our Race Committee this month: Ginny Daniels, Marilyn Wall, Barbara Arnold, and Betty Hurley. A word of thanks also to Nancy Dunn, George Simmons, and Tove & George Kullman who were either manning the Safety Boat or standing by. The Broad Reachers have so many great supporters and we appreciate and are very grateful for each one. For the Captain’s Race, each of the RC volunteers drops their name in a hat and the sailors draw a volunteer’s name to represent. After completing three races, the winners were: 1st place Anne O’Dell (Marilyn Wall), 2nd place - Joanne Simmons (Ginny Daniels), and 3rd place - Dee Gill (Nancy Dunn). Each of the winners took home a nice gift card.

The Broad Reachers put together a great Rainbow Regatta team. Anne O’Dell, Judy Clapp, Katie Rodgers and Gail Poffenberger represented us this year on April 11th. Go Team!! We’ve been training hard every Wednesday and occasionally on Saturdays. The week before the big race, a Broad Reacher work crew got together to retie sails and check all the gear and make any needed adjustments. Thanks to Jeanette Erb, Joanne Simmons, Tricia Billings, Anne O’Dell, Katie Rodgers, and Carol Hansen for taking time to help get the team ready.

On March 19th, the gals were surprised by a huge black cloud that loomed over them just as they had completed rigging their boats. Our sailors were: Barbara Arnold, Joanne Simmons, Tricia Billings, Carol Jurca, Jeanette Erb, Charl Hadfield, and Dee Gill. Disappointed, the girls quickly de-rigged the boats. They were just finishing getting boats and gear put away when the skies opened up.

Which is Your Club?

IN T HE

by: Fred Stansberry On Friday, April 8th, Wing Shooters members gathered at the Sarasota Sporting Clays Club for our Inaugural Snowbirds Send-off fun shoot. We divided up into six teams and enjoyed a spirited competition. When the smoke had cleared the team of Jack Cartier, Breck Amick and Mark Foster had captured the top Yacht-Shots position. They will retain bragging rights until our snowbird members return this fall. SPYC members are always welcome to join this fun group by contacting any WSS member or call Jack Cartier at (727) 822-8800. Email him at: jack@cartiercpas.com Top Wing Shooter Society Yacht-Shots Team

Mark Your Calendars: Upcoming Fishing Club Meetings…these are held on the second Wednesday of every month. Come join us at the Downtown Clubhouse on these days at 7:00pm as we share fishing stories, tips & tactics, and enjoy some good ole fashioned SPYC camaraderie!

Photo of the Month! Congratulations to Wayne Andrews for being selected as the Fishing Club’s “Photo of the Month!” Wayne caught himself a Yellowfin Tuna 180 miles southwest of St. Petersburg on the edge of the loop current. WAY TO GO WAYNE!!!

Salty Sisters

by: Anne O’Dell

Salty Sisters Officers & Directors 2015 - 2016 Captain: Shirley Rigo, Co-Captain: Selga Sakss, Treasurer: Rosemary Sherman Secretary: Lisa Avila, Awards: Tricia Billings, Parliamentarian: Connie Beckman Immediate Past Captain: Carol Hansen, 2nd YR Directors: Gloria Davis, Joanne Simmons, and Barbara Arnold, 1st YR Directors: Gail Falkingham, Nita George, and Els Wiemken

SAILING NEWS: Sue Davidson was instrumental in assisting the Salty Sisters to obtain new sails for the McLaughlin and Vanguard IODs. Todd Fedyszyn coached our Pram and IOD sailors in preparation for the Rainbow Regatta. Todd emphasized starting and racing techniques. He instructed in the classroom and on the water in all sorts of conditions. During one on-the-water training session, conditions were challenging and an accident happened, just ask Nancy Kadau who was towed in after another Salty sailor rammed into her and broke her tiller. On other practice days, we had calmer conditions. You never know what the conditions will be the day of the regatta on April 11th.

Sue Davidson

Challenging practices

ALLISON JOLLY REGATTA: The regatta for girl sailors will be held April 30th and May 1st. Chairman Gail Poffenberger asked Salty Sisters to contribute a variety of items for “themed” raffle baskets that will be raffled off the day of the race. CRUISE: In March, a Salty group attended an educational program about the protection and restoration of the Tampa Bay estuary given by Tampa Bay Watch. The program consisted of hands on activities and a boat ride in the Tampa Bay estuary followed by a picnic lunch provided by Café Soleil, a French bakery.

Nancy Kadau accidents can happen

Tampa Bay Watch

SOCIAL: On St. Patrick’s Day, Leprechauns George Flatley and Bill Pickering led the group in a medley of Irish Songs. The Salty Sisters were a sea of green in their St. Paddy’s Day attire. Every table had a chance to read a limerick that someone from their table created. The three limerick winners representing their tables were Carol Bardes, Nancy Strite, and Polly Jones. Kathy Mansir and Mary Jane Peabody raffled off two baskets of merchandise from Stores. Eleanor Jacobs and Joanne Simmons were the lucky winners. 18

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

AR

Members and Employees MAY 2016, Beth Hoch

We are very excited to announce this month’s Employee of the Month – Beth Hoch! Beth is the Payroll Clerk for the Yacht Club and has been with us since November of 2011. Not only is she instrumental in insuring the payroll dollars are in line, she assists the employees with benefit administration, processes new hires for proper documentation and hiring techniques, monitors all Federal and State notices regarding compliance, tracks training programs, and most importantly, makes sure we are all paid timely and properly! And then in her spare time, you might see her at the Front Desk covering breaks, or helping out somewhere else in the Accounting Office processing payments, assisting with Guest Cards, or even extending month end inventories. She is a great asset to the Yacht Club and very deserving of this recognition. Thank you Beth for all that you do!

AT SPYC!

We have received a mixed reaction and lots of feedback about the french fries recently! Many love the new thick curly potato fries and many prefer the straight classic fries. To appease everyone who has a discerning palate when it comes to their fries, we will alternate months as to the type of fries offered. One month thick and curly, the next month, straight and classic cut.

KUDOS TO YOU AND YOUR STAFF, SPYC! “A quick note to you about our celebratory dinner on the 16th......absolutely delicious food, wonderful service - Christophe and Steaven - he had everything set up just as we asked. Kudos to you and your staff... SPYC delivered 100% and completely exceeded our expectations.” ~Kindest regards, Marsha and Ed Fetchik
