SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH

COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 7 Well here we are in May with summer almost upon us and the “Regatta Season” over. Over you say? Well not quite! Although the 49th Regata del Sol al Sol started on April 28th, the finish will be this first week in May. Trisha and I will be flying down to Isla Mujeres, Mexico to join the fleet and Race Committee for the festive celebrations and awards ceremonies. As usual, we are looking forward to enjoying the natural beauty of Isla Mujeres and the laid-back ways of the people. And for Junior, High School and Collegiate Sailors, the Regional, National and International regattas are just gearing-up. Since some of these Regional and National Regattas will be hosted by SPYC, you will notice more young sailors around the Club than usual. May is such a delightful month. Everything is in full growth mode: May Day parties, Cinco de Mayo festivities (BTW celebrated in remembrance of my Birthday), Kentucky Derby mint julip parties, and Mother’s Day celebrations are joyfully abundant – all in preparation for the lazy days of summer. Unfortunately, because we will be in Mexico, I cannot participate in the Kentucky Derby party – one of my favorites. During the first two weeks of May, the cruising fleet led by Angela Kowalik, is meandering south to the St. Charles Yacht Club in Fort Myers and back; leisurely stopping at various FCYC clubs and other fun destinations along the way. The Commodores join in the fun for some or all of the destinations. Trisha and I will be joining the “Cruise” at the South Seas destination, one of our personal favorite places to spend some idle time shelling on the beach.

Along with the warming weather and daylight savings time, comes the advent of this year’s Twilight Sailing every Friday night at 18:30 until August 25th (weather permitting) with a gathering at the Tiki Hut afterwards for drinks, dinner and discussions. Check out the NOR on the website and join in the fun using one of your Club’s boats. I just got notice from Todd Fedyszyn that we are hosting the first of our Saturday morning J/70 One Design races. The goal of this series will be to run as many short races as possible on a Saturday morning for those interested in getting in a little more sailing and experience – great opportunity for developing and honing all facets of sailing/racing skills. As always, Race Committee Volunteers are needed to run the Friday Twilight and Saturday One Design races. This presents an opportunity for the Race Committee team to enhance skills, advance new techniques, develop team relationships, and comradery. For summer fun at your Pass-a-Grille location, Marc Reydams and his team have come up with some activities I know lots of you boating folks, like me, will enjoy. Every Sunday, beginning Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, the first ten boat Captains who arrive by water to enjoy food and beverages at Pass-a-Grille will receive a special gift. So put on your fun hat and join us on Sundays at the “Beach Club”- watch the changes evolve and enjoy. See You There!

Stay-at-Home Splash ’n’ Bash In Support of SPSC Jr. Sailing Program Sponsored by The Broad Reachers SPYC @ PAG

The Lightning Class is the longest one design fleet coming to SPYC. The 70th Annual Winter Lightning Regatta took place March 18th – 21st, and included forty boats from four countries (US, CAN, COL, and Chili). The Lightning class sails in seventeen countries worldwide. Within the class there are four Winter Divisions: Championship, Masters, Grandmasters, and Woody. Sailing conditions were “the best racing of the Winter Championships ever”. PROs Tom Farquhar and Todd Fedyszyn ran six great races; two days postponing until the breeze to fill in. The first day kept our Safety Teams busy with seven boats capsizing. Division Winners Include: Championship: Ched Proctor, Jeff Eiber and Tim King from Cedar Point YC in CT – Masters: Marvin Beckman, Monica Morgan and James Barnash from Houston YC, TX – Woody: Dave Dickerson, Don Barrett and Jonathan Veins (who is age 12 and also the winner of the Davis Youth Award) from Niantic Bay Boat Club. Crown Cars Regatta 2017 By Selga Sakss – Event Chair

SPYC at Pass-a-Grille hosted the Crown Cars Regatta on March 11th. This regatta is a part of the West Florida PHRF Boat of the Year Series. Although the number of competitors was somewhat less than anticipated, the fleet had a great 12 noon start in 8-10 knot winds. The Spinnaker and Racer-Cruiser classes sailed a 16 mile course in the Gulf and the Cruising class sailed a shorter 13 mile course. While the winds died down briefly, the fleet finished in a freshening breeze and everyone was back at the Club by 5:00pm for a keg of beer, followed by dinner and awards. Thank you to our Principal Race Officer, George Pennington and his race committee consisting of Beth Pennington, Jennifer Parramore, Selga Sakss, Fred Higham, Maurice McGough and Jeff Wright. A sincere thank you to Vice Commodore, Joe Klingel, for obtaining beach parking passes for all competitors and to Steve Guarcello for managing the overall parking tactics. Welcome Aboard!!! For our March cruise (3/243/26) we returned to Sarasota Yacht Club, while Sarasota Yacht Club visited our Club. This prearranged “swap” allowed us to accommodate 15 boats on this cruise. We dined in the Club on Friday. Then on Saturday, we had a private trolley to the waterfront for an afternoon at the beach. A special thanks to our Port Directors Pam and Allen Thomas who made all the arrangements as well as hosted us at their Longboat Key condo on the beach that Saturday afternoon. We enjoyed everything Sarasota had to offer… and then some! For our April cruise (4/7-4/9) we ventured back to Sarasota to Marina Jack, located in the heart of downtown. My husband Brian and I had the pleasure to be Port Directors for this cruise. We had docktails each evening under a private tent, did a few private boat tours, explored the Saturday Farmer’s Market, and enjoyed dinner at Marina Jack’s and also in downtown. We had a great group and even better weather, and didn’t want to return home. Thanks to everyone that made this trip.

Thank you to our Riders Club members who came together for the promotional video shoot which promoted the clubs within SPYC, on Friday March 24th at the Downtown Clubhouse. Our riders did a great job! Decked out in riding gear we toured the streets around the Club while the camera rolled.

Recently 17 of us went to Fish Hawk Sporting Clays in Lithia. It provides a nice change from our regular hunts. Whenever we go to Fish Hawk, it’s off to the Islamorada Fish House at the Bass Pro Shop in Brandon. The hungry and often thirsty shooters are shown below.

Fish Hawk offers some different views than we are used to. At this view, there is a beautiful pond in front of you. It’s not always about the ‘clays’.

There is still time to join our ride on Saturday, May 6th to Dade City for the Classic Car Cruise In. Everyone is invited to attend our meetings on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:15pm at the Downtown Club. Soon we’ll be planning a ride to conquer the Rattler in North Carolina. Enjoy these photos of our March fishing trip ride to Steinhatchee.

This device keeps you on your toes! It shoots clays way over your head making them very difficult to hit.

When all is said and done, we are ready to head out for lunch and a cold beverage This is about half our Friday group. GEEZ, I thought Motley Crew was a band! Come out with us some Friday and give it a try. You can rent a gun and we leave the second tier of the Club parking lot about 8:15am weekly.

Salt Water Anglers Its Spring – Mackerel, AJs and more Offshore.

Wayne Andrews with a keeper Red Grouper

The Saltwater Anglers made a run 70 miles offshore to a wreck in 190 feet of water. We found plenty of Red Snapper and an abundance of Amberjacks. Fortunately we were able to weed through the out-of-season fish for a couple of keeper Red Grouper and Mangrove Snapper. While there, we also had the good fortune to land and release a goliath Grouper in the 400 lb. range.

Dean with a smoker King Mackerel

We dropped a GoPro camera to the bottom on a marker buoy so we could see the fish around the wreck. We saw Yellowtail, Mangrove and Red Snapper; Scamp, Red, Gag and Goliath Grouper; Cobia, Permit Angel and Aquarium fish. Many more species than we caught. Some photos from the trip and underwater video can be viewed on our Saltwater Anglers Facebook page at https:// w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / groups/SPYCAnglers/. The Kingfish bite has been great recently as the water has warmed to 70+ degrees. On the way in we stopped near the end of the Chris Cameron lands a nice AJ! ship channel to slow troll a few live baits for Kings. Spanish Mackerel are also plentiful in the ship channel west of Egmont Key, a tasty catch nearshore. King Mackerel are great smoked, I’ll be bringing smoked fish spread to our regular monthly meetings. The Saltwater Anglers meet at 6:00 PM on the second Wednesday evening of every month at the Downtown Clubhouse. Please come join us at our next meeting on May 10th, or sign up on SPYC.org; click on the “Clubs” tab and scroll down to Saltwater Anglers, click on the Sign Up & Contact Info Form and get your email on the list. Amateur Radio Club

In the recent race to Habana, two SPYC ARC members, Captain Joel-KJ4SME, on SV/Orient Express and Captain Frank-KJ4ZHY, on SV/Mesmeriah were designated net control operators for radio contacts with VHF (marine radio) and HF (SSB) radios. Unlike satellite phones that are challenged in heavy weather, and you talk to only one at a time, radio contact is consistently available to talk with many resources at once. Radio nets offer on-the-air health and welfare assistance to sailing vessels with safety issues, mechanical issues, or are just available as a reassuring voice on the radio. Net controllers with long range radio equipment can be used to contact the Coast Guard, when vessels are out of the range of VHF radio, or to contact medical resources via the Maritime Marine Safety Net. During the Habana race, nets were operated twice a day on VHF and once a day on HF. Check-ins from vessels were received on each net. Many vessels reported dropping out of the race due to no wind, and some reported diverting to Key West because of weather conditions. The Habana race event once again demonstrated that a goal of Amateur Radio is to enhance safety at sea.

The SPYC Golf Group had a great spring outing at Countryside Country Club in Clearwater on March 21st. Finishing in first place with a score of +1 were Martin Morris, John Arsenault and Isabel Schoenberg. Larry Heinkel, Myra McShane and Bill Longo came in at 2nd place with a score of +2. Third place was secured by Rosemary Sherman, Ed Wilson and Ron Hersch with a score of +3. Closet to the pins on all par 3’s were Martin Morris, Larry Heinkle (twice!) and George Kinemond. Closest to the line was Bill Longo who was literally inches from the line! The weather was fabulous and the course was in great shape. Our fearless leaders, the Arsenaults, will be traveling much of June and therefore we won’t have any organized golf outings in June or July. However, members can opt in to play ad hoc with each other; and we have provided contact information to make this an easier process. Group outings will resume in August with a trip to TopGolf, date and time to be determined. As always, new members are welcome!

Our social network uses our Net where we socialize on-theair, or often in person at Pass-a-Grille every third Monday at 17:30. Let’s all stay in contact on the Net from wherever we are in the world and have good times with Amateur Radio. Check us out on http://tinyurl.com/SPYCARC.

Prepping the Boats

Loading Team

The Team: Judy Clapp, Marti Cochran, Anne O’Dell, Sarah Richards, Donna Papa

This year’s annual Rainbow Regatta was held in Sarasota on Monday, March 27th. Sunday began the process of preparation, the girls loaded the boats, sails, rudders and dagger boards into a U-Haul truck. Nancy Dunn volunteered to be our “truck driver” and transported the precious cargo down to the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. After unloading and prepping the boats, some of the girls stayed for the “tailgate” party hosted by the Bitter Ends and Luffing Lassies. Bright&earlyMondaymorning the mighty Broad Reacher sailing team, consisting of Anne O’Dell, Donna Papa, Sarah Richards, and Marti Cochran showed up ready to sail. The day was beautiful, but unfortunately, the winds were not very cooperative. The first two races were completed, but the third race was shortened due to NO wind. Congratulations to the sailors and volunteers for a job well done!!!! Our volunteers included: Nancy Dunn, Judy Clapp (alternate sailor with a broken finger), Barbara Arnold, Renee Benson, Katy Rodgers, Mary Jane & Steve Peabody, and Nancy Strite.

The Sun n’ Fun International Fly-in and Expo in Lakeland, FL took place over the weekend of April 8th-9th; which is one of the largest aviation gatherings on the East Coast. This presented a perfect opportunity to have a monthly meeting during the Flying Club Meeting Bill Buston, John activities. We met at Arsenault, Peter Privitera, Tracy the Florida Aerospace Livingston, Andy Evans, Dave Wilgus Historic Annex run by the dedicated folks from our own AWAPS (Albert Whitted Airport Preservation Society). Pete Privitera, Tracy Livingston and myself volunteered cooking duties for burgers and hot dogs, helping AWAPS cover their costs. After lunch we held our meeting, where Bill Buston gave us an interesting educational tour of the historic items on display; including details of the Benoist- the first commercial flight in the USA from St Petersburg to Tampa, as well as details of National Airlines. I wish! Piper M600 The airshow itself had plenty for everyone, a chance to get up close and personal with every imaginable aircraft, but equally the military display and the ability to converse with the actual pilots. The day was rounded out with the eternally thrilling Blue More P51’s than you could imagine Angels display, and no matter how many times you have seen them, it is always astounding. The next scheduled meeting will coincide with Mother’s Day, so there will be no formal meeting, however we intend on gathering sometime during the month. All active members will be E-mailed when a date and time are set, so keep an eye out. Blue Angels, Starbust Break
