SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH
COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 1 To you this is the beginning of November, but to me this is the beginning of my fourth and last year of service on the SPYC leadership team. I say team because the Flags cooperatively work together as a “team” to apply our combined diverse skills to forge the best strategic thinking, tactical plan implementations, and solutions for the greater benefit of the members. So, as the new “Team Leader” take a look back with me over the past three years at the road down which the Club has travelled, to where we are now. The beginning of our financial journey started with the arrival of our new CFO Colleen Finney and new GM Marc Reydams, resulting three years later in a revised, enhanced budget/operating planning system & controls; connected through annual capital contributions to a Capital Planning and Maintenance System projecting out 20+ years of maintenance and improvements to the physical assets and properties at all five locations. In other words…at the start where losses were once posted, we are now booking year-end positive additions to the reserves! The Food & Beverage journey began by management empowering people at all levels of service to make decisions that positively effect Member satisfaction, and by making some effective organizational changes. Then, Chef Joseph Van Bemmel came to the Club applying his talents to menu creation and was focused on consistent preparation and delivery of food. In other words… the comment cards we review monthly reflect an improving satisfaction trend. Please use the cards or email comments – unknown concerns cannot be resolved can they? After three years of weekly meetings, where Standard Operating Procedures or Policies were being reviewed (almost weekly), the briefly described journeys were far more complicated – which is why I want to proclaim a heartfelt “Thank You” to my predecessors for their leadership along the road – especially to Richard Winning for being an outstanding leader fostering teamwork and building the consensus, which has left the club positively positioned for continued success. My visions and focus for the year ahead are: 1) Continue to make physical improvements, including activity & entertainment additions to the Pass-a-Grille location, resulting in a more attractive asset for our total membership to enjoy; 2) Expand the communications plan begun with the St. Petersburg– Habana race into a broader spectrum of press releases and
implement an Image Communication plan which will, over time, create an umbrella of positive awareness of SPYC’s existence as a community mainstay; 3) Capitalize on the enthusiastic reception of the J-70 fleet to enhance, strengthen, and reinvigorate all of our outstanding sailing programs from Junior Activities through Salty & Twilight racing, and on to new yet-to-be-thought-of sailing programs; 4) Encourage and facilitate growth within each existing Clubs Within the Club (CWC) and support additional interest groups’ intentions to form a new CWC. Well! Enough of my perspective, a few of the Club’s activities in which you may be interested in enjoying are: • Wing Shooter Society annual quail hunt at Dorchester, GA is Nov 2-4 – I will be there! • Vintage Motor Classic Car show Nov 6th – where I get to pick out an award winning vehicle! WOW! • Saltwater Angler’s Club meeting Nov 9th – Wayne Andrews is leading the reorganizing of the fishing club, so anyone interested give him a call (832) 549-7898. I am sure he can use all the help he can get. • Commodores Ball Nov 12th - will have a Cuban theme and is the crown Jewel of SPYC events; followed on Sunday by the Blessing of the Fleet & Jazz Brunch – a tradition not to be missed. • Regatta Season begins on Nov 19th with the Snipes/Windmill & ICSA Championship Regattas. I have found working on the regattas’ Race Committee to be filled with rewarding camaraderie. Try It! • Thanksgiving on Nov. 24th – I would like to pass on special comments from last year: rave reviews on the take-out turkey dinners from a few members that tried the service – not to mention the in-club dining! • Christmas Boutique on Nov 29th – profits go to the Junior Activities sailing program, so go spend all you can afford! You are invited to browse thorough Smooth Sailing to search out the events that suit you best and join in the fun and dining that Trisha and I enjoy around the Club.

Power Boat Competition
Seeing Florida By Water … With new committees forming, we are LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD MEN AND WOMEN to help plan and steer activities for: • The Small Boat Group • P1 SuperStock Power Boat Racing- powerboat and jet ski races • Power Boat Rendezvous to Cuba for 2018 • SPYC Boat Rally Invitational • Great Annual Dinghy Poker Race
North American Invitational SPYC was again very ably represented by Maurice McGough and his daughter Maureen in the 2016 North American Invitational Power Boat Competition held in Port Orchard, WA. Maurice and Maureen competed on Emerald Star II, a 42’ American Tug, owned by Duane and Lynn Duncan of the Port Orchard Yacht Club. Thank you Maurice and Maureen!
The Small Boat Group Weather and water conditions permitting - we take monthly boat trips to local restaurants and places of interest. September’s boat trip was to Mar Vista on Longboat Key. No red tide problems that day and the restaurant was very busy! In October we gathered at Circles Restaurant in Apollo Beach for lunch and football. No effects from Hurricane Matthew that day! On November 6, 2016 we will gather by boat or by iron dinghy at PAG by 11:30 for lunch and football. Docks have been reserved for our group. So, please contact me for dock space and lunch reservations. Check our webpage for our Calendar of Events!!! PBC and the Cruising Fleet gather in December for the Annual Awards Dinner and Holiday Party. This year our dinner party will be on Friday, December 9, 2016.

The 6th Annual Great Dinghy Race This annual worthy cause and fun event is held to benefit All Children’s Hospital and donates new, stuffed animals and teenage appropriate gifts to kids in our community. This year was no exception, with over12 dinghies participating and 100 donations to All Children’s. “Thank You” to Tom Coffey for his hard work and dedication in pulling this all together! 8

SPYC is the host for the 2018 NAI to be held here in St. Petersburg. Our aim is to re-introduce members to this sport that is very much like a car rally on water; with use of instrumentation this is fun and challenging too. Stay tuned for upcoming information on our internal boating events, including our Invitational scheduled for Fall 2017. P1 SuperStock Boats - SPYC is exploring working with the P1 SuperStock organization to bring power boat racing back to St. Petersburg. This will be a 2-day event for stock power boats, and jet skis would be part of a circuit of powerboat racing in Florida. The P1 Powerboat organization offers driving packages and encourages local racers to compete in these races.
Cruising Boat Rendezvous to Cuba The committee is proposing organizing a rendezvous to Cuba in 2018 for power boats. This is an exploratory committee and we would like to involve boaters who have been to Cuba, traveled to Cuba by boat and are familiar with the marinas. Hope to see YOU on the water…Barbara Weller, Chair, Power Boat Competition, barbara.weller221@yahoo.com, 941-356-1680.

Amateur Radio Club by Dick Mordaunt, AB1NI Amateur Radio Saves Lives. When hurricane Matthew hit the Caribbean, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, many local hams monitored the radio frequencies on hurricane watch networks; and some were able to assist in coordinating relief efforts.
On October 21st, the US Coast Guard’s Auxiliary’s 77th anniversary was celebrated by many special event stations around the country. SPYC member, Jack Satterfield, hosted special event station W4A! Contacting special event stations is a great way to enjoy and share the fun of Amateur Radio.
Amateur Radio is a unique hobby that is often combined with other hobbies. On October 15 & 16th, the worldwide Boy Scouts Jamboree on the Air introduced scouts to ham radio and the ability to talk to amateur radio operators around the world. A very good friend and occasional SPYC Monday night net visitor, Nigel Cole in Wales, was involved with the scouting event in Wales by getting on the air with scouts as special event station GB100CSW.
Our social network uses our Net where we socialize onthe-air or often in person at Pass-a-Grille every Monday at 17:30. Let’s all stay in contact on the Net from wherever we are in the world and have good times with Amateur Radio. The latest long distance check-ins to the Monday net were Dick Mordaunt and Mary Lou Turgeon who made contact from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia--- 13 time zones and 7100 miles away from St. Petersburg, Fl! ‘73 https://sites.google.com/site/spycamateurradioclub/ November 2016 Smooth Sailing 9

On Saturday October 1st the Wing Shooters Society, in conjunction with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, held their first charity fun shoot at the Sarasota Sporting Clays Club. With over sixty participants the event was a smashing success for this worthy cause. After a group meeting to discuss safety issues, individual and team participants proceeded to the prepared course to engage in a lively competition. When the shooting was over and the smoke cleared everyone returned to the pavilion for a barbecue lunch and a tally of the scores to determine the top shooters. The first place Individual trophy went to Ed Welsch, and our own Jack Cartier took the second place trophy. In the team competition the first place trophy went to the Commodores Team made up of RC Joe Klingel, PC Sandy Schoenberg, Les Bauer and Commodore Bob Birkenstock. Congratulations to all of these fine shooters! SPYC members are always welcome to join in the Wing Shooters Society fun by contacting any member, or call Jack Cartier at (727) 822-8800, or email at: jack@cartiercpas.com. We meet on the second Thursday of each month at the Club and gather several times a week for our informal practice shoots at local sporting clays venues.

Welcome Aboard!!! … How time cruises on by when you are having fun! With another year under my cap as your Fleet Captain, we are well positioned for another great year of cruising and I’m proud to provide continuity by serving again for the coming year. Meanwhile, here’s what’s happening with the Cruising Fleet:

Fleet at Field Club
For our September cruise (9/16-9/18) we ventured to the Sarasota Bay area and spread across two locations to accommodate our group of 15 participating boats: Field Club and Sarasota Yacht Club. Thank you to our Port Directors, Ed & Isabel Hanna, who arranged several activities and dining options for the weekend for both groups. We even had a “field” trip from SYC to the Field Club to get the two groups together for Mah Jongg and rum tasting and some dips in the pool. As usual, the weekend was too short for all the fun but the weather was very cooperative coming and going.

G lf Gr up There were 18 brave golfers who suffered the heat and humidity, and finally the lightening, during our golf outing at River Strand Golf and Country Club in Bradenton. The course was just beautiful and so well maintained and the Pro, Oscar Parks and his crew, were so well organized. It was such a shame that there just wasn’t a small breeze to alleviate the heat and humidity. We were all drinking our waters to keep hydrated and didn’t even have to stop to use the rest rooms since we were all sweating so much. So now God intervened, and He sent the lightening and rain to pull us off the course after we finished the first 9 holes. Thank you God! We all ended up in the dining room which was air conditioned so well, and the wait staff were so pleasant. We had a wonderful lunch and time for socializing while 6 crazy golfers stayed on the course for the back nine. We decided that they won but we were happier being safe and cool at the 19th hole. Included is a picture of John and Susan Arsenault with the St. Pete Yacht Club Burgee on the bridge of The Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland. They said it was such a wonderful event playing the course and the highlight of their recent trip to Scotland. 14

Our “hands-on” project of the season will feature crafter extraordinaire Susan Hammock who will lead us through how to make handmade greeting cards. You need not be artistic – all you need are some basic tips (and an adventuring spirit) to make beautiful, personalized cards. After you learn how, this is a great activity to do over the holidays with family members. Reservations are required – Woman’s Club members only please! The cost of this event is paid out of your member dues. Contact Eve Kress at oceanchild@verizon.net or call her at 727-895-3249 to lock-in your spot no later than Saturday, November 12th. Wear your name tag and be eligible to win a bottle of wine! November 16th in the Regatta Room Social time: 5:00 p.m. with the meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. We’ve had two highly entertaining programs already this year. In September Boyd Hill Nature Preserve Ranger, Andrea Anderson, shared information about the wildflowers and animals at the preserve. Also, Roy Peter Clark had us on the edge of our seats in October with his presentation of “The Art of X-Ray Reading.” The Mission of the Woman’s Club is to embrace new friendships, promote social activities, and increase women’s involvement in the SPYC. If you have not yet joined, contact Eve Kress, Membership Chairwoman, at oceanchild@verizon.net right away so you can participate. Dues are $35.00 for June 1 to May 31 fun and festivities. The YCQ, located in Quebec City, was established in 1861 and is the second oldest in North America (2nd only to the New York Yacht Club). Fellow SPYC Cruisers Corrine & Ken St. Jean stopped in at the San Diego Yacht Club in August while visiting their grand-daughters. They are shown here proudly displaying their shiny new SPYC Burgee.
