COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 1 And a new year begins It is, of course, a very busy and exciting time taking over as the new Commodore at St. Petersburg Yacht Club. I consider it both an honor and a privilege following in the footsteps of Past Commodore Birkenstock. Through the last four years I have witnessed Bob handle his responsibilities as a Flag Officer with great skill and finesse. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with "Birky" through the years. It is with heartfelt sincerity that I thank Bob for all of his years of service with the Club. The Annual Board of Directors Election results were as follows: Elected Board Members: Chris Bergstrom Gerry Douglas Selga Sakss Chad Shakespeare Brian Smith Bill Waters, II Congratulations also to the new Flag Officers: Vice Commodore James Byrne Rear Commodore Michael Blacker Treasurer David Mendelblatt This year we had an outstanding list of well qualified candidates. I wish to thank everyone for their continued dedication to our great club. Further, for those candidates who ran for the Board and were not elected, please accept my thanks for your efforts. My advice to all don't be discouraged and continue to be involved in the various club committees and activities. There is always next year! SPYC in conjunction with the Museum of History in St. Petersburg is developing an exhibit featuring one of the original Optimist Prams. We continue to find new ways to show the world how SPYC has been so involved through the years in sailing. In Clearwater, some seventy years ago, Clark Mills designed the original Optimist Pram. It was to be a simple, inexpensive boat ($50) for young people. Each boat was designed to be built out of just two sheets of plywood. This one-design dinghy caught on and evolved to be the world's largest one-design class. Over 400,000 prams have been built and sailed in 120+ countries around the world, and of course at SPYC. Our display will feature one of the original one-design wooden prams which introduced thousands

of young people to the sport of sailing. The exhibit will be kid and family friendly. It is just another way to show how St. Petersburg Yacht Club has had a huge impact on many young people in the local community through its sailing program. Many thanks to Donna Sue Marks and her committee for their efforts on this project. The exhibit will begin in February 2018 at the Museum of History, located at 335 2nd Avenue NE, St. Petersburg. As we proceed into November, there are many club activities that you may be interested in enjoying. Here are a few to choose from: •

Member Appreciation party - October 22nd, I hope to see everyone there!

Wing Shooters Annual "Ready, Aim, Cure" Clay Shooting Tournament - October 28th at SarasotaTrap and Skeet. I along with three Past Commodores will be shooting on the "Commodore Team", attempting to win the 1st place team trophy for the second time.

High School Keelboat National Championship - November 3rd5th

Vintage Motor Classic - Sunday, November 5th

Commodore’s Ball - Saturday, November 11th – this is the crown jewel of the SPYC events, followed on Sunday with the Blessing of the Fleet and Jazz Brunch.

The Mallory Cup Regatta - November 9th-12th. The winner will represent the U.S. in the World Sailing Champion's qualifier!

Rumor has it that roadwork is to be completed by November 30th in Pass-a-Grille! Our new retractable awning has been completed at the Beach Club. This makes our outside dining really fantastic! Give it a try, it is really enjoyable. Our Long Range Planning committee continues to investigate the possibilities of a pool, Tiki bar, and other improvements at our Beach Club location. I think they would be great additions, helping to develop the beach facility to the fullest. Please browse through Smooth Sailing and look at the many events happening as well as the reports from our Clubs Within the Club. Enjoy & see you at the Club!

Joseph W. Klingel, Commodore The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige.

USODA SE Championships a Success!!! E W AT

Over the long weekend of October 7th-9th, SPYC hosted the USODA SE Championships which also served as the Spring Team Qualifier for sailors looking to travel internationally over Easter of 2018. Two-hundred and seventy-three sailors from all over the USA, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Brazil, Mexico and Ecuador were in attendance. Sailors were treated to some great conditions with 10-15 knot winds out of the southeast, clocking to the south on the first two days of racing. Unfortunately the wind gods did not cooperate on day three so the event finished with the 7 races sailed over the first two days. Stefan Baker was crowned the Overall Champion winning all 7 races. Peter Foley and Venessa Larkhamp finished in 2nd and 3rd place overall. The top SPYC finishers were Guthrie Braun in 59th, Dorothy Mendelblatt in 128th and Bella Shakespeare in 135th. Also competing for SPYC were Taylor Brown, Ava Shakespeare, Kate Danielson, Sidney Moyer, Logan Rimel, Trent Boicheff, Jack Carter, Elizabeth McCree, Julia Connelly and Reid Nelson. Once again the SPYC Race Committee did what they do best and provided the sailors with the best race course possible. BIG “Thank You” to all who volunteered both on and off the water!!

Sometimes us Wing Shooters like the variety of using other guns for target practice. Recently we visited Fish Hawk Sporting Clays to try out their new pistol range. After an intensive safety orientation, we registered as “capable” of using their range. Here's Jim Montgomery showing his form for maximum accuracy. I'm not sure how successful that was! Eight members of our group got to participate and even had one man who fired a pistol for the first time, although he had hunted extensively in the past. There were a variety of targets available and many of us were surprised at how difficult it was to score with our aging eyes and muscle!

Power Boat Competition Seeing Florida By Water …

October found us at O’Maddy’s in Gulf Port … great company, great food and planning for future boat trips and boating related activities too! Hope you can join this growing active group as we explore our local waters and locations too. We will be posting our itinerary on our club web page with greater regularity along with photos and information. November and December are very busy months at SPYC with the Commodore’s Ball, Blessing of Fleet, and of course our Annual Awards and Holiday Dinner. This year the Annual Awards and Holiday Dinner will be held on Friday, December 8th. As always, this dinner is held in conjunction with the Cruising Fleet and will be a “not to miss event” again this year… truly!!!! Mark your calendars and call Catering at 727-892-6887 or email spyccatering@ tampabay.rr.com for reservations I am also very pleased to announce that SPYC has been selected to host the 2018 North American Invitational cruising navigational rally. We last hosted this event in October 2011. This event draws experienced visiting yachtsman from yacht clubs all over the country, including the San Diego and Chicago Yacht Clubs. This event is a club-wide effort and will need volunteers to support the many aspects of this event.

Emerald Star Boat Owners and Crew

Emerald Star II

Maurice and Maureen

Let me give a quick overview of this updated event: Like a car rally, the boat driver and his/her navigation team, prior to the event starting, predict how long it will take for the boat to complete a given course (ie: point A to point B to point C, etc.). All instruments may be used except a time piece while underway so that the captain cannot adjust speed to match the predicted time for that leg. The boat with the least amount of total error wins. We are in the process of putting together a team to organize and implement this event. Many of you may remember or have experience in predicted log events. Many of you have experience in organizing events or race management. If so…we need you! We also are seeking10 boat owners who will be willing to allow the experienced visiting yachtsman to “use” their boats for the rally. By use, I mean “get to know the boat so that they can predict the behavior of the boat”; in order to predict the time it will take the boat to complete the course. Boat owners are participants and are never off their boats at any time visiting yachtsman are aboard. Boat owners are invited and included (gratis) in all activities for visiting yachtsman. This event will be “rally” sanctioned by NACA and we are excited about bringing this event to St. Petersburg. If you can, we’d love to have you participate and bring your experience and knowledge to the table. Barbara Weller, Chair, Power Boat Competition, barbara.weller221@yahoo.com, 941-356-1680. Welcome Aboard!! As we wind down this year, and gear up for another, I’m proud to provide continuity as your Fleet Captain again to carry on for the coming year. We had a lot of fun this year, and expect more of the same. For example, even with Hurricane Irma, we still managed to have our September cruise (9/15-9/17) to Tampa Yacht Club. Thank you to Camille Iurillo & Joe Petrella, our Port Directors, for “weathering” under the storm and managing under all the stress to bring the cruise together. Five boats made the trip and we had several by “iron dinghy” for dinner at Tampa YC on Friday, and Roux in South Tampa on Saturday. Another great weekend!

September started a new season of sailing for the Salty Sisters. We started out in full force in Ideals, 420’s, and Prams. The Prams sailed the Edie Pace Memorial Trophy race on September 20th. This race is in memory of Edie Pace, who was a Salty Sister from 1958 to 2011. She remained an active member until she passed at age 97. Co-Captain Gina Bowden-Pierce colorfully 420 Sailors - Lori Leadbetter & described her as “hell on Rosemary Sherman wheels.” We sail this race annually as close to her birthday (Sept. 23rd), as possible. This year’s results were: Tove Kullman – 1st place, Betty Proper – 2nd place, and Carol Hansen – 3rd place.

Race Committee - Mary Alice Edie Pace Winners - Carol Hansen, Bolline, Sue Davidson, Nina Glover Tove Kullman, Betty Proper

September 27th was Gina’s last Wednesday as Co-Captain and we had 42 participants sailing in Ideals and Prams. Great way to end her Co-Captain season!! We completed our Mother Ducky races in Prams with each team having to cross the finish line at the same time. Each team consisted of a “Mother Duck” and two “Ducklings.” Everyone had a great time despite the light winds and HOT temperatures. First place team consisted of “Mother Duck” Tove Kullman and her “Ducklings”, Gwen Mann and Donna Papa. Our new class of 2017 joined the fun in the second race as we introduced them to racing with the Salties. Mother Duck, Joanne Simmons lead her “Ducklings”, Katie Rodgers and “Newbie” Joan Stephenson to a first place win. October will begin our Pram Trophy races; the Jobin, Misfit, and Chili.

November Program: Red Tide – what’s it all about

I hope all of you will join us for our annual Blessing of the Fleet on Sunday, November 12th. Bring your boat or join us on the docks to receive a blessing, accompanied by our incoming Flag Officers and Fleet Captain (yours truly). Be a part of this historic tradition! Inquire or sign-up for our events on the SPYC Website, Cruising Fleet page. Looking forward to serving again as SPYC Fleet Captain and seeing you on the water…. 10

On Saturday, October 7th, the Broad Reachers held their Annual Welcome Back Meeting with 20 members present. Captain Joanne Simmons opened her first meeting by welcoming back everyone from the summer break.

Oct. 7th General Meeting

Race Captain Katie Rodgers announced that she has scheduled a full year of Saturday sailing and racing!!! In addition, we’re looking forward to participating in many FWSA Interclubs, the first being held at Davis Island on Oct. 10th. This year the Broad Reachers are very excited to have an entry in the FWSA Championship Regatta. This race is sailed in Ideals and being held on October 17th. Barbara Watson will be skippering with Charl Hadfield and Carol Hansen crewing. This may be the first time in Broad Reacher’s history that they have had a team entered in the Championship. The Broad Reachers are busy planning for the 46th Annual Commodore Lucas Invitational on October 27th. Nine clubs have been invited to sail in the race. The Lucas Trophy was presented by Commodore John Lucas, Jr. in 1972 to the Broad Reachers of Pass-a-Grille Yacht Club “to promote racing between female sailing groups in the Tampa Bay area and to encourage proficiency in seamanship, sportsmanlike conduct and outstanding proficiency in this sport.”

In September the Golf Group played the challenging Legacy Golf Club in Lakewood Ranch. It was a particularly warm day (i.e. HOT!!!) but this was offset by the lovely setting, great staff, and free lunch and beer. We also had a small group and therefore invited guests to join us. With a total of 20 members and guests, we had a delightful and challenging outing. In first place with an impressive -2 were Roger Gooch, Bill Newton, Bill Knudsu and Gill Pinney. Second place winners at +4 were Jack Howard, Nydia Weinstock, Bill Protz and Emmett Coe. Finishing third at +5 were Joe Hartman, Theresa Matthews, Martin Morris, and Bill Waas. The course was so challenging that on one of the par 3’s, no one hit the green. For the others, Elizabeth Anderson, Martin Morris, and Gill Pinney zeroed in on the greens. Karen Lieberman was closest to the line on hole #1. Mark your calendars: • Bayou Country Club: Oct. 10th, Tuesday, 9:30 am, shotgun, fee $43+ • University Park Country Club: Nov. 15th, Wednesday, 9:15 am, double tees, fee $50+ • Innisbrook (North Course): Dec. 5th, Tuesday, 8:30 am, double tees, fee $50+  • Christmas Party: Dec. 7th, Thursday, 6PM  If interested in joining the Golf Group, please contact John and Susan Arsenault at SueatCP@aol.com.

Have you learned to play Mah Jongg yet? Every Monday, we have a fun-loving group playing MJ at 1 p.m. with optional lunch at noon. For details, please contact Barbara Casey at barbarahap@aol.com

If you would like to join the Ladies Beach Club or have not renewed for 2017-2018 contact our Membership Chairwoman, Sondra Seay-Frisbie, 727-542-3077 (sondra.seay@gmail.com). It’s $30.00 annually and worth every penny!

SPYC Saltwater Anglers Host 2017 Fishing Tournament The Captains meeting for the SPYC 2017 Fishing Tournament was well attended. A number of our sponsors as well captains and anglers all turned out at Pass-a-Grille to enjoy a festive evening. We are fortunate to have a number of local sponsors who donated food, spirits, and tournament prizes. Unfortunately, the fishing was postponed one week due to a tropical storm in the gulf - look for results in the next issue.

Despite the storm conditions over the weekend, we still got out for a productive day offshore with Bill Mann recently. George Kinemond, an avid inshore angler, made the trip with us offshore and good thing he did, George cranked in a couple of fine Red Grouper. Great day for all with a limit on Red Grouper, and a few nice Lane Snapper to boot! Fall fishing season is underway, please join us! Get on the email list! The Saltwater Anglers meet at 6:00pm on the second Wednesday evening of every month at the Downtown Clubhouse. Please come join us at one of our next meeting on November 8th, and December 13th, or sign up at www.SPYC.org; click on the “Clubs” tab, scroll down to Saltwater Anglers, click on the Sign Up & Contact Info Form and get your email on the list.
