SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH

COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 10 Anchors Aweigh… Well it’s that time to raise the anchor and set sail to new adventures! I have enjoyed my year at the helm of this fine Club and am proud of all that has been accomplished. Remember that Legacy? Well I hope the Food, Service and Fun times have met your expectations. You’re Flag Officers and Executive staff has diligently worked toward bringing the traditions back that this Club was so well known for. The Granddaddy of races, St. Petersburg – Habana Race, first started in 1930 and last sailed in 1959. To date we have eighty boats signed up for the February 28th start. Check out the Clubs web site on how you can be a part of this regattas historic return. A recap of Club happenings…Over the summer the Club has added a new fleet of 10 new J70’s to our Sailing Center for your pleasure. The Tiki Bar received new furniture and fire pits along with some very large umbrellas. Keeping you cool… new A/C throughout the Club and boat lifts at Snell Isle Marina, just to name a few. These and many more things that were behind the scenes (out of sight, out of mind) have contributed to keeping this Club at a higher level, expected by you, the member.

I want to thank the Executive Committee for all of their hard work in keeping the tradition going. From all those Regattas they have managed to the Dueling Piano nights, Poker Runs, New Members and right down to the 4th of July Flag Ceremony. They too are the heartbeat of our Club… and especially our members! If you aren’t already involved, then get involved in one of the many committees. In the midst of all these thank yous, a reminder that repairs to the Main docks will be starting soon, so please accept our apologies for any inconvenience that may ensue. As I leave, I feel comfort in knowing that your incoming Flag Officers Commodore Birkenstock, Vice Commodore Klingel and Rear Commodore Byrne will always keep the Club members best interest in mind and have fun doing so. It has truly been an honor in working with you all this past year. Election Day is October 11th so get out and vote for your new Board members so that we may keep this wonderful tradition since 1909 going! One final note before weighing anchor, is a heartfelt Thank You to P/C Bruce Watters for his advice, comfort, leadership and many years of service to this Club. My sincere condolences go out to Rosie and his family.

Speaking of the out of sight, out of mind. I want to say Thank You to all of our employees who are the true heartbeat of this Club. Not just the ones we as members see every day, but those that are working hard behind the scenes:

Lastly and most humbly, I thank the Commodorable Ada for putting up with me and my time here. Speaking for us both, we look forward to seeing you all at this year’s Commodore Ball on November 12th and again in Habana in March 2017.

Daniel Zellny & Ditmar Popov in Housekeeping, James Spencer & John Taylor in Maintenance, James Dominick, Gabriel Harrelson & Mercedes Cardenas our Cooks, Keith Gordon our Steward & Christopher Corby our Baker Assistant, Cody Spruce at the Sailing Center and Dustin Pollard at Snell Isle Marina. Though I couldn’t name everyone on staff, my hats off to all of you! You all have done a yeoman’s job, keep up the good work!

Remember….”It Ain’t Easy Having Fun!”

Richard Winning Commodore

On behalf of the SPYC Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Sailing Center Committee, we’d like to take this opportunity and formally announce the arrival of SPYC’s brand new fleet of ten matched J/70 OneDesign Sailboats. The acquisition of this fleet is one of many steps the Club has taken to ensure our sailing programs remain on the leading edge of the sport. Below, you will find some additional information about the fleet and some upcoming J/70-specific programs. SPYC Member J/70 Orientation Program In order to qualify our members on the J/70’s, we have setup a series of orientation classes designed to better acquaint our sailors. These courses are organized into 4hr-long sessions and are mandatory for all members wishing to skipper a club-owned J/70. These courses are also highly recommended for SPYC members looking to learn the crew positions in the new fleet. Prior sailing experience is required. For the upcoming schedule and online registration,

Friday Night J/70 Racing For qualified J/70 skippers, we will be hosting a series of races on Friday nights leading up to our Club Sailing Championship. This informal series will have Windward/Leeward courses with multiple short races each night. We will also be providing a volunteer on-water coach who will host an open debrief in the Sailing Center classroom immediately after racing. Racing this month takes place on October 7th & 14th. Reservations are required by emailing sailingcenter@spyc.org at least 24hrs in advance. $50 drop/usage fee will be applied to your SPYC acct. Twilight Series 2016 By Gloria Davis Another successful Twilight Series has ended. We managed to get in sixteen races this season! That’s only four Fridays we missed…not bad for summer on Tampa Bay. Winning Sonar- Steve Lang won the Ed Sherman Award

Congratulations to all the Winners this year: Spinnaker A 1st place USA505, David King 2nd place TackTick, Dr. Mike Siedlecki 3rd place Warrior, Grant Dumas Spinnaker B 1st place Pigs in Hiding, Warren Sweet 2nd place Shock Wave, Seth Rosenthal Non-Spinnaker 1st place Bunch’s Brew(a sonar), William Steve Lang 2nd place Hula Girl, Steve Shortt Cruising 1st place Desiderata, Richard Boler

Steve Lang, David Stein, Debbie Lang, Sydney Jones

We were also able to present the “Ed Sherman” award to the best Sonar sailor. Our own Snipe master sailor, Steve Lang and his crew were out there almost every week and won! We actually kicked off the season with a couple of “warm up” races in March and will probably do the same next year. Plan on getting out there next season? It’s a great way to spend a Friday evening on the water, followed by a thorough debriefing at the Tiki Hut. Watch the Yacht Club Regatta calendar for an updated Notice of Race (NOR). Plan on getting out there next season. It’s a great way to spend a Friday evening on the water, followed by a thorough debriefing at the Tiki Hut. A BIG ‘Thank You’ to my stalwart support team: Selga Sakss, Gene Collins, Fred Higham and Maurice McGough. We encourage everyone to come out with the Race Committee and experience the other portion of sail boat racing anytime… see you on the water!!

Salty Sisters Learn More About the Salty Sisters at www.saltysisters.org

The 2016-2017 Salty Sister Slate of Officers are as follows: Captain-Selga Sakss, Co-Captain-Gina Bowden-Pierce, Treasurer-Rosemary Sherman, Secretary-Jennifer Parramore, and Awards-Sigrid Lovfald. 2nd Year Directors are Gail Falkingham, Nita George, and Els Wiemken. Three 1st Year Directors will be elected at the October Annual Meeting. Nominated Directors are Tricia Billings, Bonnie Cannard, Polly Jones, Iris Mastry, Betty Proper, and Beth Pennington. Educational classes relating to race committee procedures and regatta safety were held at the SPSC. Shawn Macking and Corey Hall held On the Water instruction about boating maneuvers and skills. Classroom education conducted by Nancy Shivers, Gina Bowden-Pierce, Marion Ballard and Kathy Ahern provided valuable information on race committee duties. While the SPYC was closed for a week, the ladies went to the St. Petersburg Country Club for a luncheon and spent the afternoon either at the pool or playing games in the club. Two Cruise events occurred at the end of summer. One was a tour of the Armed Forces History Museum in Largo. Later in the month, Jon Hair himself conducted the Salty tour of the Jon Hair Monumental Sculpture Museum. After the tour, the ladies ate at the Hollander Hotel Pub.

Welcome Aboard!!! …

Our August Cruise (8/26-8/28) was to Pasadena Y&CC in Gulfport. Mother Nature was at her temperamental best that weekend, giving us beautiful weather in the mornings and driving rain in the evenings. Nonetheless, four cruisers made the intrepid journey by boat: Brian & Angela Kowalik (Marquesa), Chris & Sally Plonsky (Final Fling), Ken & Corrine St. Jean (Phantom), and Elwyn & Carol Segrest (Fish “E” Business). On Friday, we moved our “docktails” inside to stay dry. Later we dined in the club, joined by several “iron dinghyers” and a group from the PYCC cruising fleet, making a group of 28 for dinner. On Saturday evening, the boaters went to downtown Gulfport for land side docktails and dinner at the Boca Bay Grille….oh, and a little shopping in-between. Thanks to Chris and Sally Plonsky, local Gulfport residents, and our August Port Directors for organizing this weekend, including everyone who braved the weather & made the trip; whether by boat or iron dinghy! Upcoming events include: • Cruising Fleet Luncheon Meeting – Thursday, October 13 at noon. Program features Stew Ahman, Ocean Racing Chair, who will share the historic races centered around our great club which brings international exposure to SPYC. We will also begin sign-up for our December Awards & Holiday Dinner, & January cruise to our own SPYC docks. • Cruise to Twin Dolphin Marina – September 16-18

Jon Hair Museum

For your planning convenience, our remaining 2016 events are listed below; more details available on the website. Looking forward to seeing you on the water …

The Welcome Back Party on September 7th was a luncheon cruise with live entertainment aboard the Starlite Majesty. The attendees enjoyed a leisurely 2-hour cruise and informative narration by the Captain as they cruised along Florida’s beautiful inland waters.

This past summer has been very busy for the members of the Broad Reachers. Although we didn’t sail, many were traveling the world in motor homes, autos, cruise ships, and their own boats. We want to welcome everyone back and are looking forward to getting back on the water real soon. The Broad Reacher’s General Meeting and Welcome Back lunch will be held on October 1st. Our new Officers will take the helm at that time. This year, the Commodore Lucas Cup, will be held on Friday, October 28th, with a rain date of October 29th. We will be inviting ten other FWSA clubs. This event is always exciting and well worth coming out and supporting the girls as they switch boats between each race. Another great event coming up will be a “Fun Sail” to Shell Island for a picnic. Last year the weather was great for the trip to the island, but the wind died down and we had some help returning to the Club.

Returning to the Club

Over the next three months, the Broads will be competing in many FWSA Interclub events. We also look forward to our Halloween Costume Race, the Captain’s Race and Turkey race.

The excitement is building! Finally we are announcing an update on our flying adventure to Cuba. We will depart SPG on February 28, 2017, or the day after, and fly to Cuba coinciding with the SPYC regatta to Havana; which has 70 to 80 boats attending. We estimate the flight to be two hours direct, and we have arranged with Commodore Escrich of the Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba to take pictures from our planes of the competing fleet along the way. Our Flying Club members and Commodore Escrich will judge the best photos and a prize will be awarded! At our next meeting on Sunday, October 2, a sign-up sheet will be available for those interested in attending. This meeting will be held at Passa-Grille, with 5:30pm cocktails/meeting and a 7:00pm dinner. Save the date for our annual Christmas Party scheduled for December 11th at 400 Beach Dr. in the building party room from 5:00-8:00pm. Contact Lora Fulmer for further details at 727-543-2997, as she is in charge of all arrangements and has graciously offered to handle two other events as well. First, being our second annual Naples Art Festival Flying on February 18-19. Rooms are available at Bella Sara Hotel so book early as reservations are limited. Second, is the Marathon Seafood Festival on March 11-12, with hotel reservations at Holiday Inn Express. Again, you must contact Lora Fulmer for specific details if you are interested in attending. (You may choose to attend either by land, sea or plane.) On another note John Arsenault was cruising the beaches last month on a Thursday evening and caught this Princess cruise ship clearing the Skyway bridge… beautiful picture, thanks John.

There were 15 players who went to Top Golf in Tampa on Tuesday, Aug. 15th. They reported having lots of fun, as they divided into three teams and played several different games while driving their golf balls out onto the targets. Karen Lieberman and Jack Howard took lots of pictures, but I think the most fun was watching Elizabeth Anderson take out her driver and shoot hard and long having so much fun. Everyone thought it was a great idea for an outing in August, when it was too hot to play regular golf. They were all outside under cover from the sun and had lots of fans to keep them cool. The lunches everyone ordered looked delicious and the beers went down easy. 14

Smooth Sailing October 2016

The 2016-2017 program season got off to a rocking start in September with the presentation by the rangers from Boyd Hill Nature Preserve; October’s program is sure to please as well! Roy Peter Clark, writing educator at the Poynter Institute and author of “The Art of X-Ray Reading,” will present a highly entertaining musical presentation that he claims will help us become better readers and writers. You have to be there to learn how, so join us: October 19 in the Waterfront Room Social time: 5:00 p.m. with the meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. The new Woman’s Club directory “hot off the press” was distributed at the September meeting. If you didn’t receive yours, Eve Kress will have them again at the sign-in table during the October meeting. The directory has the information you’ll need for the entire year including programs topics and dates, Interest Group contact information, a complete list of all book titles and authors for the 2016-2017 year, planned special events, plus a complete list with contact addresses, phones numbers and email address for everyone who had renewed their membership for the year as of the date of printing. This year there is an added bonus – a double-page spread of the early history of the Woman’s Club. Join us this year in celebrating fourteen years of fun, enlightenment and comradery! The Mission of the Woman’s Club is to embrace new friendships, promote social activities, and increase women’s involvement in the SPYC. If you have not yet joined, contact Eve Kress, Membership Chairwoman, at oceanchild@verizon.net right away so you can participate. Dues are $35.00 for June 1 to May 31 fun and festivities. Monday, October 17, 11 a.m. Discover the art, history, and culture of the Tarot with the Psychic Queen of Fun, author Ani Crane, M.A. Ani comes from a Celtic Portuguese heritage. She is the mother of five, a grandmother of 11 and a great grandmother of two. She has devoted 21 years to teaching English and taught English to foreign students @ N.Y.U. Her next exploration and expansion led her to the Association for Research and Enlightenment/Edgar Cayce Inst. where she studied psychic development and worked on the Heritage Psychic line for 8 years. She is currently the resident Psychic @ Shiva Dharma in Gulfport, FL...living and loving it there in joy. Pass-a-Grille was closed for 3 Mondays in August, but thanks to Barbara Catalioto, we were able to continue playing Mah Jongg at the Harbourside Clubhouse. As Patsy Warmack would say…we could go into MJ withdrawals if we missed 3 Mondays!!

Amateur Radio is a great tool to use during an emergency, whether on land or at sea. The Hurricane Center in Miami uses Amateur Radio operators to assist during hurricanes. Some SPYC ARC members supported the Pinellas County Emergency Management communications needs during hurricane Hermine; we talked about this at our September meeting. Come join us every 3rd Monday of each month, 5:30pm at Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse and hear what Amateur Radio is all about. Our social network uses our Net where we socialize on-the-air or often in person. Let’s all stay in contact on the Net from wherever we are in the world and have fun with Amateur Radio. Latest long distance contact called from Seoul S. Korea. See you at our next club meeting! ‘73 https://sites.google.com/site/spycamateurradioclub/

SPYC Riders Club by Denise Gero Fall is here, the weather is great, and it’s time to RIDE… We look forward to several of our members returning from their summer homes to this area for the winter. Ray and Charlotte have been missed and another rider is back from his many rides this summer, including Europe and Sturgis, SD. Join us at the next meeting scheduled for October 18, 2016 at 6:15pm at the Downtown Clubhouse. We will share our summer riding and travel adventures and plan future rides to enjoy this season. There is still time to contact Wayne and join him on his ride in late October to Pensacola, with stops at the Naval Aviation Museum and the Thunder Beach Rally in Panama City. Do not forget to indicate your interest in the Homosassa Springs / Crystal River ride following the Ozello Trail. Contact any member listed below to confirm your intention. Ride date will be determined by participation. Norm, Club President, is still gazing at his bike awaiting clearance from his knee surgeon so he can ride again and lead the pack on a ride!

Have you read “A Land Remembered” by Patrick Smith? The book was voted “Best Florida Book Again for the 10th Year in a Row”!! The late author’s son, Rick, will be our guest speaker on Monday, March 20. It’s not too early to mark it on your calendar, and read the book, if you haven’t already. If you are not yet a member, be sure to contact our Membership Chair Sally Roth at TouhySally@aol.com

Power Boat Competition

Seeing Florida by Water …WE DID IT and have pictures to prove it! In August the Small Boat Cruising group traveled to Frenchy’s Saltwater Café for lunch and good fellowship! Cruising were Angela and Brian Kowalik, Ken and Corrine St. Jean, Kent and Marcia Larson, and Heber and Barbara Weller. The weather was perfect for such a great outing! In September we went cruising, swimming & had lunch at Egmont Key. It was a lot of fun despite the recent fire at Egmont! A good excuse to boat with friends. Football is back! So on October 9th and November 6th we will cruise for NFL SUNDAY FOOTBALL to some fun locations to watch the games with friends. October’s

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH SEPTEMBER 2016,

Cody Spruce

Please take a moment to help us congratulate September’s SPYC Employee of the Month, Cody Spruce! Cody has been with the Club since January 2014, and was recently promoted to Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, which oversees the maintenance and upkeep of the Club’s fleet of over ninety boats. Cody is a graduate of Eckerd College and a veteran offshore sailboat racer; having sailed across the Pacific seven times. The Club’s growing sailing programs are reaping the rewards of Cody’s experience, dedication, and attention to detail. He continually strives for perfection in all that he does, and we are a better Club with him on our team. Please congratulate Cody next time you see him for a job well done!

These SPYC Members were determined to make some memories in their festive costumes attending the Toga Party at the Downtown Tiki Hut earlier this year! The group went to Pass-a-Grille for dinner before the big event. Shown above include Andy Evans & Donna Bauer, Gail & Jim Falkingham and Larry & Jackie Jensen. What a sharp looking group…Thank you for attending!
