SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH

COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 12 – As you read this, we are preparing for the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Sailing Capital of the South on October 13th. I hope you are tuned into the elections and are planning to come vote, get a free drink, have dinner, listen to some brief reports and hear the election results. I am a member of a few organizations and I have never seen one where so many people want to serve. But for our By-laws limiting the Board to 18, we could easily have 40 members. I would never support that, as the law of diminishing returns stops us at about the current number; however the point is that we have so many members who are generous with their time. Thanks to all who serve now and who have served in the past on the Board, on Committees, fund raising, race course, social events and to those who do the great Club work of patronizing our facilities on a regular basis. This has been a special year for Kathleen and me and we hope that you will join us for the Commodore’s Ball on November 14th. I have recently witnessed the efficiency and creativity of our banquet staff led by Shannon Nylander as we planned this event. It is no wonder that we are such a popular spot. The Clipper Ship will sail at 4 bells, so please be at the wharf. A new and secret libation has been created just for the voyage called the “Clipper” and a 19th century menu has been created with 21st century techniques to help you enjoy the grandeur of old world ocean travel, minus the pitch and roll of the real thing. Anyone with an eye patch or a parrot will get a free shot of rum. No, this will not be Pirates of the Caribbean…it is much more elegant. So shake a leg, dress smartly, honor your mates, cover your ears for the shot of the cannon, eat well and carry forward the tradition of this great old ship…the “SS SPYC!” We have quietly experienced some very unusual and positive results this year. One of those was a 7-month run of net increases in members from February through August. Yes, we still lost a few members, but we have added more new members than we lost for 7 straight months. In the past, we rarely had a single month with a net increase. A key part of this trend is 32 new intermediate members joining in the past year. This is the result of hard work by your Membership Committee and Amy Spencer, as well as the good word and effort put forth by hundreds of our members on a daily basis. With 2,100 folks (and double that for those with spouses) all quietly (except for Judy M.) regularly suggesting the SPYC as a destination, we can keep this healthy trend going. And not just joining, but using the Club.

subsidies in that area was dismal. Today, with a new GM, a new Chef, new uniforms, a smarter menu and with me eating like a pig (we all have our hidden talents, some less hidden than others), we have made an astonishing 300% reduction in the subsidy. Happily, we are now well below national averages for clubs. I do want to direct you to our Snell Isle Marina, as we are gradually freshening the landscaping and a variety of other features, including the canopy on the dock, the new live bait well and some interior upgrades. Please remember this great little marina when you consider the benefits of Club membership. Stand by for future announcements there.

Quick windward leg by Commodore Ford, et al, followed immediately by emergency meeting of the Spinnaker Committee

Now Pass-a-Grille really gets the award for the “Asset of the Month”. If it was a human, it would get a designated parking space for the month! The menu has been revamped and we went there a few weeks ago; it is really a great selection. Please get out there and give it a try. They too must be remembered when you consider the benefits of SPYC membership. Frankly, it’s almost like getting memberships in 2 separate fun Clubs for the price of one. Use it… And our beloved Sailing Center is getting a major interior facelift thanks to the taxpayers of St. Petersburg. Please remember to thank your City Council representative and any staff members you know. Those of you who are not residents of St. Pete, be sure to thank those who are, because we pay for that. It’s all a part of our Country Club dues (as Kathleen and I refer to property taxes). You get tennis courts, several golf courses, a big red truck with some buff guys in yellow suits who race to your house if you leave the meat loaf on the burner too long, the parks get planted, edged and trimmed and your Sailing Center gets some big funding…now and then…and we pay no rent. Not bad for a little fishing village on the Bay. I look forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting and at the Commodore’s Ball. See you at the finish line!!

Another healthy statistic was the extreme turn around in food and beverage. Three years ago, despite an improving economy and high usage at the Club, we were not managing our costs and the trend in

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. 2

SAILING NEWS: Twilight Sailing continued on Friday nights through the month of August. The races were a great opportunity for the Salty sailors to get in some sailing time. September brought the beginning of the 2015-2016 sailing season. Many racing practices began in September with enthusiastic sailors manning their vessels. The fall is filled with a multitude of racing series.

Salty Sisters

IN T HE

Saltines: New Salty Sister applicants for our class of 2015 are Gretchen Tenbrock-Wolf, Donna Papa, Camille Kilgore, and Barbara Mehaffey. Swim and sailing tests were required before they could become Saltines, and all four passed with flying colors. This fall, the Saltines will take a series of educational classes and after passing their written tests, they will become official Salty Sisters in October 2016. SOCIAL: Splash ‘N Bash at Pass-A-Grille: Commodore Harvey Ford, Club Manager, Marc Reydams, Salty Sister’s Judy McFadden and Captain Carol Hansen were dunked in the Dunk Tank this year! All the funds raised at this PAG event went to Junior Sailing.

Cabana Beach Day

Cabana Beach Day: Several Salties spent the day at the beach at the White Sands Cabana Club on Siesta Key in Sarasota. Connie Smith hosted the event and everyone enjoyed a leisure day in the sun. CRUISE: The SE Guide Dogs in Palmetto is a program where dogs are trained for service and given free of charge to recipients. This organization is entirely run through generous donations. After visiting the SE Guide Dogs, the Salties had lunch at the Bradenton Yacht Club.

Sheriff Kathy Ahern

Cowgirls Maridell Weaver & Gloria Davis

Welcome Back Party: Chairman Barbara Deininger and her committee created an outstanding Country Western theme for the September Welcome Back Party. Sheriff Kathy Ahern had her hands full as she supervised the rowdy cowgirls. The Salties’ boots were made for dancing. Captain Carol Hansen led line dancing and about 40 Salties participated. The Nauticats sang a medley of Country Western songs while cowgirls galore appeared at the event decked out in their western apparel. Cowgirls Maridell Weaver & Gloria Davis, Salty Cowgirls, Sheriff Kathy Ahern, and the notorious Dance Hall Salties (Linda Summers, Shirley Rigo, Susan Huff, and Fran Weaver-Nohren) clearly represented aspects of the Wild West.

Welcome Aboard!!!

In August, we had an Ad-hoc Cruise to Carlouel Yacht Club (Aug 28-30). As Port Directors for this weekend, my husband Brian and I had everyone aboard our very own Marquesa for docktails on Friday before having dinner in the club that evening. By some accounts, we had waaaay too much fun in the dining room (shhhh)! Joining us for the weekend by vessel were: Tim & Dianne Connolly on Lady Di 3 Tom & Kathy Daniel on Sol Mates Ken & Andrea Beil on Hatta Dream Biff & Stephanie Judd on BareFootin’ Les & Nancy Bauer on Bella Vita Joining us by Iron Dinghy were John & Elaine Guthrie, Janice & Michael Smith, Tom & Maryann Glew, and Phil & Mary Letourneau. It was quite a turnout, and everyone braved the weather to get together. On Saturday, Ken & Corrine St. Jean travelled aboard Lady Hawk to join us for lunch in the Bird Cage. That afternoon, most of us did the dockwalk and then rallied around the docks for interesting conversation, mostly focused around what was later determined to be remnants of Erika. We kept all our weather apps busy. Later we gathered around the fire-pits for heavy hors d’oeuvres including fresh Mahi Bites, compliments of the Judd’s Key West trip. Some of us slipped in a few dance steps in the moonlight. Thanks to Erika, the

breeze was delicious! What a wonderful weekend it turned out to be. Thanks to everyone for coming! UPCOMING EVENTS for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy include: • Cruising Fleet Luncheon – Thursday, Oct 8, 2015 at noon • October cruise to Long Boat Key Moorings - Oct 16-18 • November Blessing of the Fleet – Sunday Nov 15 • Cruising Fleet tables at the Jazz Brunch – Sunday Nov 15

Why not join us 4 our next Fleet Luncheon Meeting on Thursday, October 8 at noon. Our program will focus on radio utilization, featuring guest speaker Larry Wissing, fellow cruiser and avid ham radio operator. We will also begin sign-up for our December Awards and Holiday dinner, and January cruise to Gulfport at that time. For Monthly Meeting reservations, contact the Catering Office at 727-892-6887 or 6882 or spyccatering@tampabay.rr.com. Monthly Luncheons with Informative & Entertaining Programs By Eva Hefner, President, eva12023@tampabay.rr.com

Monday, October 19th at 11 a.m.

Join us to hear the folklore and legend of Pinellas County by Deborah Frethem, local author and historian. Deborah holds degrees in history and theater from St. Olaf College in Minnesota. Ten years ago, she came to Tampa to lead ghost tours and immediately fell in love with the weather and stories of her new home.

With the summer doldrums upon us, our weekly sporting clays adventures have dwindled to about a dozen diehard clay busters. Many members have traveled to cooler climates and some just want to avoid the summer heat. With fall just around the corner, we expect the turnout for our weekly events to increase dramatically, and look forward to welcoming back some of our missing members. Our monthly meeting and gourmet dinners have continued to draw good attendance. We expect these events to attract even more members as the weather cools, and more members return to the Bay area.

Memberships are still open.

We continue to add new members and invite all male members of the SPYC that are interested in shotgun sports to join us. Contact Jack Cartier at 727-235-2726 or ask any member for details.

Interested in Becoming a Member? Memberships are open to all SPYC women and dues are only $30 per year for June 1st to May 31st. For membership information, contact Sally Roth at TouhySally@aol.com

Etiquette, Strategies, Rules, Tips, etc. Well done! As you can see, because of the big smile on Roslyn Beckoff’s face, she deserves a well done for winning a concealed AND Singles and Pairs hand worth 50 points. The Mah Jongg hand was: 112 11223 112233 (any 3 suits; these numbers only). Singles and pairs are the most difficult hands to attain, since you are not allowed to use jokers. What is even more challenging, is that all the hands in this Singles & Pairs section are concealed hands and a tile may not be called unless it is for Mah Jongg. Roslyn is also our “Sunshine Lady.” If you know of anyone who needs a little cheering up, please contact her at: rozb@tampabay.rr.com

Flying Club

By Peter Privitera

Welcome back from our summer days of flying! Please bring all those promised pictures of the events you attended, or have flown in, so we can add some to our next monthly article. Our next monthly meeting, Sunday October 11th, will feature speaker Payton Yon who has enlightened us before about drones. This time he will be discussing a flying event to River Ranch, which boasts a 5000 foot runway, having everything from horseback riding to a Saturday night rodeo in a 1200 seat arena. This is a two day event and includes luxury accommodations. Check out the site: www.riverranch.com. You may really be surprised how many attractions they have and the number of things to do, so please attend the meeting and get your questions answered. It is an easy drive if you’re so inclined. Also, at the October meeting we will be selecting an election committee7 to prepare a slate of officers for next year, and for new members, this is the time to join the club and get involved. We meet every second Sunday of the month, except during the summer, so come and socialize with us. Anyone who loves fun and has an interest in aviation can join; ownership of an airplane is not a prerequisite. For information on the club, contact Gene and Joann Wood at 727 743 3721, or myself at 813-263-4806.

Amateur Radio Club

by Dick Mordaunt, AB1NI

Do you want to try ham radio on the air? At the SPYC Member Appreciation Event, on Oct 25th from 3-5pm, we will let guests use ham radio to talk on the 14.300 MHz Maritime Net or to others. Our HF radio is upstairs but we can operate it remotely with a laptop from anywhere in the world with internet access. If you get an amateur radio license, you too could use our HF SSB radio remotely. Ahoy mates! Some of ye mates participated in “Talk Like a Pirate Day” over the air on September 19th. How many times do you get to play pirate and don’t need to board a vessel, weigh anchor and worry about being becalmed? Blimey, some mates just socialized with other pirates over the air from home with the SPYC remote rig. If ye have questions about the SSB HF radios for your vessel or want to join the fun of ham radio, contact us, or join us when we meet faceto-face every third Tuesday at 6pm. We also socialize on-the-air every Monday on our VHF Net at 17:30 on 147.030 MHz where people join us locally or from around the world on Echolink. Let’s all stay in contact from wherever we are in the world and have fun with Amateur Radio. ‘73s. https://sites.google.com/site/spycamateurradioclub/

Our September meeting introduced some changes to the group. There will now be more duties shared by more members, and trying to involve everyone in the planning of play days and behind-the-scenes jobs. Secretary Linda Testa has assumed the task of meeting with the Board members to get this new plan organized. Regular play days will resume in September with an outing at the beautiful Waterlefe Club in Bradenton. This play day will be organized by John and Susan Arsenault. Amory Sanders has arranged the play day for October at Pasadena Y&CC. We will resume having speakers at our monthly meetings in October. Helen Dewalt will arrange for these interesting and informative speakers. Eric & Myra McShane will continue as Treasurer, Amory Sanders will plan many outings, Greg Fisher will now give the Rule of the Month and Karen Lieberman will be photographer at outings. It is wonderful to have so many members step forward to keep this group going strong. Dues are now being collected for the upcoming year. They should be submitted by Oct. 1.

On August 20th the Annual Splash & Bash was held at PassA-Grille with all proceeds benefiting Junior Sailing programs. Commodore Harvey Ford, Manager Marc Reydams, Salty Sister Judy McFadden and Broad Reacher Carol Hansen all volunteered to be the dunkees this year. Many thanks to these four brave souls for their participation. We want to thank all those who came out and supported us and this wonderful event. Even though the crowd was small, we all had a great time and afterwards, most of us stayed for a wonderful buffet dinner presented by the Club.
