SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH

COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 10 I am composing this log shortly after Irma’s impact on those of us in her destructive path. Fortunately, for some of us (including me) and the Club, we sustained no major damage nor did we lose any public services electric power, gas, or water. The Downtown Club opened on Tuesday (Sept. 12th) for lunch and dinner and restored full services on Wednesday; Pass-A-Grille opened for dinner on Wednesday (Sept. 13th) and restored full services on Thursday – thanks to good Storm contingency planning, timely preparation, and flawless execution by the Staff Management and very dedicated employees! However, for those many who did lose electric power, life became unbearably hot without A/C, preparing meals was significantly challenging at best, and taking cold baths and showers was the norm. I am glad the Club’s quick recovery was able to provide a comfortable air conditioned environment for dining, relaxing and showering – a respite from the hot miserable recovery process; a small measure of relief. Also, I heard many stories of members with electric power helping those members without electric power by inviting them into their homes until power was restored. Shame on Duke Power for being so unprepared for a quicker response! This month of October is the kick-off of the new fiscal year, with the Annual Meeting and the Board of Directors ELECTION on Tuesday, October 10th. The election to the Board of Directors is extremely important because the Board of Directors is the governing body responsible to determine the tacks to be taken to continue the current course objective – to provide a satisfying member experience for all members in all activities. Also, the Board is the membership pool from which the next member to enter the path to be Commodore is selected. Therefore, the Nominating Committee diligently searched for the twelve most highly qualified members to be nominees for the six Board seats to be filled this year and every year. Some nominees will be known to you and others not, which is why the brief biographies have been assembled, published, and

disseminated; including a "meet the candidates" scheduled for Tuesday, October 3rd in the Lounge from 4-7pm. I encourage everyone to learn more about the members you know and come out and meet the member nominees you don’t know. Above all please VOTE on Tuesday, October 10th. October begins an active schedule of sailing events such as: (for Junior activities) the USODA spring team qualification regatta, the Leukemia Cup Ted Irwin Memorial Fall Bay Race and Sporting Clays shooting fund raising events, and, most importantly the Club Championship regatta sailed in our fleet of J 70’s. The question is… will Mike Funsch win for the third year in a row? Stay tuned! Trisha and I are very much looking forward to the Commodore’s Ball introducing our new Commodore Joe Klingel and his wife Melinda. We hope you will come out and join us for our “Moon River,” wild life low country celebration theme. The Ball combined with the Blessing of the Fleet and Jazz Brunch on Sunday always proves to be a very special fun weekend. I am sure you will not want to miss it! Since the end of the fiscal year is September 30th and the last of my Commodore’s Logs, I would like to take this occasion to thank-you, the Membership, for the opportunity to work for the Club in a variety of functions over the last eight years. This time spent has been spiritually meaningful and rewarding for me - I am proud to be a member of this great Club.

Robert Birkenstock, Commodore The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige.

The “Clifford D. Mallory Trophy” E W AT

Great news!  The US Sailing Adult Championship is being hosted this year by SPYC, November 9th-12th. The Mallory Cup was founded in 1952 for men only. The family of Clifford D. Mallory provided a magnificent sterling silver tureen purportedly from the estate of Lord Nelson. A year later women were allowed to crew, and not until 2013 were women allowed to be at the helm. Each Regional Sailing Associations area sends a representative to participate in a round robin format for four days of challenging racing by sailors from around the country. SPYC has had its share of winners.  In 1970 and again in 1973 John W. Jennings and James & Barbara Pardee brought the Cup here and in 1972 the Cup was won by Edwin Sherman, Harvey Ford, and Hubert Rutland. This year Florida and SPYC will be represented by our 2016 Club Champion Michael Funsch. Good luck Team SPYC!!!!  The winner will represent the US in the World Sailing Champions qualifier.

Twilight Series 2017 The weather spirits cooperated this season. We managed to get in 18 official races, 20 if we were to include our warm-up races in March. The Twilight Series has always offered support for one-design racers in addition to the usual spinnaker and cruising racers. This year has been special with our new J/70 fleet actively participating. There were often enough competitors to justify providing them with a separate start. Our Club is really enjoying the addition of this new fleet of boats; and we can continue using them in the SPSA race season that began in September. Their schedule is published www.spsa.us. Contact our Sailing Center to arrange for a boat. The Series welcomed several new participants this year. Ian Holtzworth, Michael Zonnenberg, Jay Wood and Gene Collins raced the J70s regularly. Jody Abrams and Daniel Dawson were out there often and placed in their class. And we must mention our true supporters, Grant Dumas and Jim Lindsay – with their crew of our ”younger” sailors and Dr Mike Siedlecki. Another, great, hot summer on the water and the winners:

Spinnaker A Class 1st Michael Siedlecki, Tack Tick 2nd Grant Dumas, Warrior 3rd Jody Abrams, Ariel Spinnaker B Class 1st Jim Lindsay, Sight Seeing Cruising Class 1st Steve Shortt, Hula Girl 2nd Daniel Dawson, Last Tango 3rd Richard Boler, Desiderata J70 Class 1st Ian Holtzworth, J70 Nancy Ammon Award nominee, Steve Shortt, another regular sailor and according to his fans and crew: “a great, forgiving, teacher” and true supporter of sailing and racing on Tampa Bay. Steve regularly serves on the Board of SPSA. Many, many thanks to my stalwart race committee, Selga Sakss, Maurice McGough, and Gloria Davis.

Welcome Aboard!! Once again the Cruising Fleet cruised to Pasadena Yacht and Country Club in Gulfport for our August Cruise (8/18-8/20). Four boats made the trip while several others joined by iron dinghy for Friday dinner in the PYCC dining room. Saturday evening, our Port Directors Chris and Sally Plonsky hosted everyone for a dinner party at their home with some arriving by small flotilla, and others by iron dinghys, to enjoy some professionally prepared food. On Sunday, a few stayed to enjoy Sunday brunch to close out the weekend. Thanks to Chris & Sally for hosting us at PYCC and to everyone who made the trip in some way.

The theme for the Welcome Back Party on September 6th was the Fall Great Harvest. It was based on Lucille Ball and the episode where she was in Italy stomping grapes. Participants, including Rosie Watters, Joy Rudnicki, Betty Proper, Shirley Rigo and Sue Brautigam enjoyed wine and a roving guitar player. Nita George and Vicki Posner enjoyed stomping the grapes. Angela Kowalik (1st Pl), Gail Falkingham (2nd Pl) and Ruth Campagna (3rd Pl) won the Lucille Ball Look-ALike contest at the party.

Her most recent novel, LET ME DIE IN HIS FOOTSTEPS, also received several awards and the 2016 Edgar Allen Poe Award for Best Novel, making Lori the first woman to receive an Edgar Award for both Best First Novel and Best Novel, and she is the third person to have done so.

Here's Tom Whiteman showing off his form at breaking the clay Pidgeon.

Not all of the clays simulate birds flying. If you look closely at the mound of dirt, you can see a 'rabbit' which is rolled along the ground to simulate a hunting scenario. This one runs up that hill and jumps high.

There is another venue that has a Five Stand. Five shooters line up where there are ten machines that throw clays out in all directions and angles. Shooters have a chart telling them what to expect, but it is very challenging.

Wing Shooters is open to all SPYC men who are interested in shooting shotguns. Many of our members are ex-hunters or experienced clay shooters. Others had never tried it before and now enjoy our shoots every Friday. Get in touch with our president, Tom Hatton, if you ever want to give it a try. October 2017 Smooth Sailing 11

This summer was quiet for the Broad Reachers. Many of our members were traveling the world, sailing in Europe, cruising the Caribbean, and visiting family in other states. We have a very busy FWSA season ahead of us. The Broad Reachers will have their first Interclub in November. In January, we will be hosting the FWSA General meeting at the Pass-a-Grille Club and then, we are Co-Chairing the 2018 Rainbow Regatta with the T.I. Tackers next spring!! The program season has begun and many of our snowbird members have returned or will shortly. The 2017 – 2018 LBC Directory is now available and was first distributed at the September 18th meeting. We had a great summer but are excited about the programs planned for the coming months. Joy Hyland, our program chairwoman, has lined up a great season. September started us off with a bang! Joan Petitti and her cast presented two, one act comedies. (Photos will be printed in the November issue of Smooth Sailing.) The October program will surely be a blast with a cupcake decorating contest led by Chef Tim. There will be prizes so please plan to attend – bring a friend to join in the fun. November is Diva Month with a fashion show by Chico’s. See the latest in cruise wear and holiday attire! And speaking of holidays, the holiday luncheon will be extra special this year. A “Toys for Tots” event is planned with entertainment provided by talented local pianist Lito Cortez. The second half of the season will be just as great. For January we have Re-gift Bingo, February the Human Trafficking of Women and Children, and Floral Design by Redman Steele in March. The annual installation of officers will be unique this year with a program presented by Lance Peterson of the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum, and last but not least we have our Derby Day races. Joy sure knows how-to engage stimulating entertainment!

June 26th, 2017 ~ The Amateur Radio Club met at the Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse and were happy to entertain Glenn and Eddie Tuttle, former SPYC members. Glenn is the past Commodore of the Waterway Radio and Cruising Club and they were cruising up here from Punta Gorda. Nets were held all through the summer, Monday evenings at 5.30pm, and grateful thanks in particular to Frank Mann, Bob Potter, and Jack Satterfield for being Net Controllers. The October meeting will be held at Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse on Monday, October 16th with everyone meeting around 5:00pm – many ARC members usually stay for dinner afterwards.

For our Mah Jongg lovers, our annual tournament will be held February 5, 2018. Start practicing now – we have cash prizes! It isn’t too late to learn to play – contact Barbara Casey for details – barbarahap@aol.com.

Seeing Florida By Water …

We traveled to Bradenton Yacht Club in August for a great weekend of boating and comradery. Bradenton has a new chef who boasted several new dishes we had to try … and we were not disappointed! Kent Larson, Marcia New, Kent’s niece and her guest, Ed and Isabel Hanna, Richard and Judi Phagan, Elwyn and Carol Segrest, and Heber and Barbara Weller all gathered to enjoy the prime rib and other really great food as the club prepared for its annual shut down. That weekend we also visited Woody’s River Roo Pub in Ellenton by dinghy for lunch. The food was good, the service was good and the docking was easy. Couldn’t ask for a better boat trip!

UPCOMING EVENTS … YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS! October … in addition to the 8th Annual Great Dinghy Poker Run on October 7th … we have a Day Trippers trip to O’Maddy’s in Gulfport on Sunday, October 15th for lunch we will meet at noon. There are public boat slips by the casino -first come-first served. Please call or e-mail to let me know if you can attend. Predicted Logging: SPYC has been selected by NACA to host the 2018 North American Invitational which is scheduled for October 2018. This is a historical and prestigious event in which clubs from across the country compete. We are looking for volunteers to assist. More information on this to be announced, but we are very pleased to have been chosen to host this prestigious event.

Power Boat Riders Club Competition

Beat the heat and join our Riders on some local morning rides.

October finds our Riders traveling far and wide.  From Iceland to Canada, New York, New Hampshire, and even Pennsylvania to North Carolina…several of our Riders are logging some heavy miles on their favorite bikes.  One Rider even slayed the Dragon! We are looking forward to Ray and Charlotte returning to Florida in early October, however they did share some photos of their recent rides in New Hampshire, and Norm sent us a photo from a hiking trail near Montreal.  Our Riders will have some great stories to share at our next meeting on October 17th.  Come and join us at the Downtown Club Norm and Vicki hiking a trail at 6:00pm. outside of Montreal

Please check our Club website under Power Boat Competition for more information on these events or call me. Hope to see YOU on the water … Barbara Weller, Chair, Power Boat Competition, barbara.weller221@yahoo.com, 941-356-1680. Ray at Smith Bridge in New Hampshire
