SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH

COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 11 – There comes the Commodore down the home stretch, but will he make it? Only Vice Commodore Richard Winning knows for sure and he is definitely a betting man. I tell people that I am a plow horse and not a race horse, so please chose-up your teams accordingly. A little over a month from now, we will have a new Commodore and I will fade to gray on the iconic great wall of photos. All hats, many beards, a few pipes, a cigar, some stoic, some dazed, several scared, all relieved, a few smirking, a bit starched, many scruffy, only one skirt, mostly dignified, but all 100%, unequivocally, forever, loving and devoted members of the SPYC. Please continue to support your Club with all the uplift and fun you can whenever you set foot in this great Club. We just hosted a potential young members’ social on Aug 27th choreographed by Chris Bergstrom and Amy Spencer and a craft beer event the very next day. I heard that some of them (not Chris) just stayed on the premises overnight. Hey, that Tiki Bar is a comfortable spot. My favorite project this year is probably the hallway burgee extravaganza. To those retentive folks out there, like me, worried about nicked up walls and shabby paint, Rear Commodore Bob Birkenstock and his H & G Committee have loaded this on their backs and produced a huge improvement to the Club. There is room for more burgees over time and they are more properly displayed. All identifiers have been retained and logged and appropriate labeling will happen in the future. Please be patient with the wall space as appropriate items are professionally and aesthetically reinstalled. Thank you to Barbara Watson for her efforts as Club Historian. Nothing is permanent and many pieces already sit in storage that have not been displayed in a long time. Please keep an eye on your Commodore Room as we establish a comfortable lounge area in the south portion. We have never had such a tranquil venue where, all day and any day, you can escape people, noise and music and read a book, have coffee, chat or quietly take a phone call. Now it is not intended for naps, but just writing all this down makes me think. Please send your congratulations to long-time employee Phyllis Eades, our indispensable sailing secretary, who is retiring. Phyllis has orchestrated hundreds of regattas over the years and her loyalty and hard work are ingrained in virtually all of our boating events at the Club over the past 26 years. One of our members deserves a mention…Stew Ahman. He and his wife, Mary (at the behest of and inspired by Board Member George Pennington), have almost single handedly (well, she

held his other hand, OK), resurrected the Race Committee reputation of our Club. They have recruited new Club members to get involved in Race Committee and they have inspired longtime members to reengage …resulting in 25 new volunteers. They are on track to certify 6 new Principal Race Officers (PRO) in the near future. This effort is exactly the trend I hoped we would see as we try to reproduce the grand SPYC race committee credentials of past members like Ted Tolson, Pat Seidenspinner and many others. And, by the way, this is a serious group. While meeting with them last month, I did reach for my drink rather quickly and someone at the table raised a white flag with a blue cross. After withdrawing and walking around the end of the table, I was allowed to re-start my cocktail. These folks are all business. So your new Club year starts in a few months and you will see elsewhere in this Smooth Sailing a column on the new Budget. It does include a 3% dues increase following last year’s unprecedented 0% increase. This is the second lowest increase in the past 20 years and reflects the strong fiscal leadership of your Board. 100% of initiation fees go into our reserves, as they should, so that all Members, new and old, can feel that they are building a foundation and not just covering current expenses. Our reserves continue to be funded at about $70,000 per month as we cover such items as new HVAC, Commodore Room renovation, burgee display, Snell Isle landscape, boat lifts, PAG improvements and on and on. Please remember that we are constantly building for the future and not just trying to cover current operations. Our predecessors (many of you are among them) wisely planned and it has put us in the enviable financial position that we are in today. Please come to your Annual Meeting on Oct 13 and the Commodore’s Ball on November 14. We will be accepting reservations for the Commodore’s Ball at the Annual Meeting and the best tables will be going fast. Don’t be left sitting at the children’s table, although it is usually closer to the desserts. Prepare yourself for the grandeur of 19th century ocean travel! See you at the next mark,

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. 2

PINEAPPLE BURGEE MEM

The Pineapple has been a universal symbol of hospitality and welcome for many centuries all over the world. At the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, one of the ways we recognize new members is to place a Pineapple Burgee upon their dining table. Should you pass by a table with a Pineapple Burgee, please take a minute to introduce yourself and give them a warm welcome to the Club.

Cruising Fleet News

IN T HE

Welcome back

from the Summer, and get ready for great boating weather. Over the summer, the cruising fleet was at our own docks downtown for the 4th of July celebration; a great weekend coordinated by Port Directors Bob and Andrea Merriman. Friday night, Marlene Beemer and Paul Davedere hosted us for high-rise “condotails”. Saturday, Bob and Andrea cooked up a scrumptious breakfast on the dock and later that evening served ice cream during the fireworks. Fellow cruisers Ken and Corrine St. Jean crossed Okeechobee aboard Phantom cruising for 2.5 months along the east coast and keys including Savannah, St. Augustine, New Smyrna Beach & Key Largo! I hope all of you will join me at the retirement reception for our Sailing Secretary Phyllis Eades. Phyllis has played an important role to support our Cruising Fleet for many years and we will miss her! Meanwhile, our Fleet Committee worked hard planning a great schedule for 2015-2016; available for download on the SPYC website for your planning convenience. UPCOMING EVENTS: Cruising Fleet Dinner Meeting – Thursday, Sep 10 September cruise to Little Harbor – Sep 18-20 October cruise to Long Boat Key Moorings – October 16-18 November Blessing of the Fleet – Nov 15 December Lighting of the Docks – Dec 5 Join us for our next Fleet Dinner Meeting on Thursday, September 10 at 5:30pm. Our guest speaker is Peter James, retired captain in the British Royal Navy, who will emphasize the importance of commanding our boats, captain requirements, and safety along with a few anecdotes for the occasion. We will also begin sign-up for our October cruise to Long Boat Key Moorings and November Blessing of the Fleet at that time. Monthly Luncheons with Informative & Entertaining Programs By Eva Hefner, President, eva12023@tampabay.rr.com

See Dr. Ann Weaver’s presentation on the 299 wild bottlenose dolphins that reside in the area of John’s Pass, part of the Intracoastal Waterway. Dr. Weaver knows these dolphins on a “first name” basis and will share the amazing habits of this special pod and how she came to live her hypnotic lifestyle completely immersed in the company of these intelligent and powerful creatures.

The Wing Shooters Society continued our community support activities in June by sponsoring Sarasota Firefighter Robin Brightbill. He represented Florida and the Sarasota County Fire Department in the Police and Firefighters World Games in Fairfax, Va. from June 26th Through July 5th. The Wing Shooters Society is very proud of our Police and Firefighters and will continue to use opportunities like this to show our support.

Etiquette, Strategies, Rules, Tips, etc. A question has come up about “Can I call myself dead?” As best as can be interpreted from the National Mah Jongg League, you are not supposed to call yourself dead. You are supposed to play defensively until someone else calls you dead (and this is the wisest course, strategically speaking). If you happen to blurt out that you are dead, you aren’t officially dead yet (you haven’t been called dead, so you cannot stop playing) - you must continue playing until somebody calls you dead. http://www.sloperama.com/mjfaq/mjfaq19.html#aa

Amateur Radio Club

by Dick Mordaunt, AB1NI

This summer our members participated in several ham radio special events. Every year in June the ARRL Field Day takes place. Many US amateur radio operators take their radios into the field to test their portable operations. This prepares operators for emergency conditions. Frank, KJ4ZHY; Jack, W4GRJ; Margie, KJ4JSH; and Chris, KJ4IFR were at Ft Desoto this year for the annual Field Day.

G lf Gr up By Nancy Strite

Early morning June storms forced us to postpone our scheduled monthly golf outing, but we were lucky to rearrange it for the following week. Cove Cay Golf Club was very accommodating to the group and we were just about finished, when thunder and lightning chased us off the course. Prizes were still awarded based on the number of holes played. 1st Place went to Emmett Coe, Dick Vazzano, Gina Bowden-Pierce and Karen Lieberman; 2nd, Isabel Schoenberg, David Evans, Chuck Abro. Close to Pin winners were David Evans, Tom Pierce, Dick Vazzano, and Emmett Coe. Everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch in the clubhouse.

Another special event was the 18th annual International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend in August. Over 500 Lighthouses & Lightships from around the world participated in the event such as the Nantucket Lightship. There were a few faux lighthouses such as the Tierra Verde Lighthouse in St Pete! Special events are fun opportunities for everyone in our club to participate. But more importantly, these events make everyone comfortable in operating SSB HF radios, provide good practice and testing equipment for when they might be needed in our sailing adventures or emergencies. Amateur radio operators are an important link to the Miami Hurricane Center when the center is activated.

In July we had our “Chipping into the Pool” contest. David Evans and Myra McShane were winners. Thanks go to SPYC’s one and only Horace Hewlett who served as our “Ball Retriever” in the pool. THANK YOU, HORACE!

If you have questions about the SSB HF radios for your boat or want to join the fun of ham radio, contact us, or join us when we meet face-to-face every third Tuesday at 6pm. We also socialize on-theair every Monday on our VHF Net at 17:30 on 147.030 MHz where people join us locally or from around the world on Echolink. Let’s all stay in contact from wherever we are in the world and have fun with Amateur Radio. ‘73s. https://sites.google.com/site/spycamateurradioclub/ Horace

Our July event was attended by 22 golfers when again the rain brought play to a halt after 9 holes. The water logged players had a nice lunch and received rain checks. Prizes were still awarded: 1st place, David Bertauski, Bob Weingartner, Myra McShane and Susan Arsenault: 2nd, Rene Echevarria, David Evans, Greg Fisher and Jim McGourin.

On June 20th the Broad Reachers held their “End of the Year Party” in the social room at 400 Beach Drive. The event was hosted by Gretchen Tenbrock-Wolfe and Barbara Deininger. The girls did a wonderful job creating beautiful table decorations and a fun atmosphere. We all brought a dish to share and Captain Joanne Simmons supplied us with some delicious London Broil from Mazzaros. We had about 40 in attendance, including husbands. Several of our new Broad Reachers discovered that not only do we sail, but we have a lot of fun, too. This summer has the Broad Reachers taking a vacation from sailing, some are off on trips to Europe, traveling around the country, camping, and just taking it easy. The PAG Prams have been busy with several weeks of Junior sailing in a “Learn to Sail” program. We are looking forward to getting back on the water and are planning a picnic sail out to Shell Island in the coming weeks.

OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS:

Our Annual Meeting and election of Officers will be held the first Saturday in October. This coming year, Captain will be shared by Anne O’Dell (fall/winter) and Nancy Strite (spring/summer), Secretary will be Julia Sorbo, and Treasurer, Carol Hansen. We look forward to the Commodore Lucas Cup in November, our annual Turkey Race, the Captain’s Race, and our annual Christmas Chinese Auction. The Broad Reachers are actively searching for Saturday sailors who would like to come out and learn how to sail a Pram. We have lots of fun and would love to have you join us. of the best Laser Radial sailors from across the USA competed at the US Sailing Youth Championships hosted by Roger Williams University in Bristol Rhode Island. SPYC’s Nic Baird sailed a strong event, and in a spectacular battle in the final two races, was able to overcome a 14-point deficit and win the event. Nic’s victory not only crowned him the US Youth Radial National Champion, he will also represent the USA this coming December at the International Sailing Federation Youth World Championships in Malaysia! Also competing in the Laser Radial at the Youth Champs were Liam McCarthy, Ty Baird, Hannah Steadman and Emily Wright. The brother team of Josh and Kyle Dochoda also competed sailing in the International 420 division. At the Open Laser National Championships, SPYC’s Blaire McCarthy successfully won the Laser 4.7 division with a score-line of 8 first places in 9 races. In the Laser Radial division, Nic Baird once again proved to be a powerhouse finishing in 2nd place overall in the 130 boat fleet. Liam McCarthy also sailed a strong event in the Gold Fleet, while Emily Wright, sailed on a severely sprained ankle to finish 2nd overall in the silver fleet followed closely by Hannah Steadman. SPYC was also well represented at the US Sailing Girls Single-handed National Championship for the Leiter Cup hosted by the Rochester Yacht Club. Hannah Steadman was our top performer finishing in 4th overall and was closely followed by Emily Wright in 8th and Blaire McCarthy in 9th. SPYC had 9 sailors in attendance at the 2015 USODA Opti National Championships hosted by the Pensacola Yacht Club. Anika Boicheff was our top performer finishing in 70th place overall in the 320 boat fleet. Anika was also awarded the friendship trophy for her friendly attitude towards her teammates and competitors throughout the event. With her finish, Anika also qualified to compete at the 2016 USODA Team Trials Regatta next April in San Francisco. Also qualifying were Ethan Danielson and Bella Shakespeare. We also had Emma Shakespeare, Colin Lawther and Dorothy Mendelblatt competing in the RWB division and Trent Boicheff and Ava Shakespeare in the Green fleet. 14

We would like to extend a heartfelt Congratulation to Patrick Woods, who won the title of “Employee of the Month” for July. Patrick has been a member of the Yacht Club Staff since November 2012. Although his primary job at the club is as a Banquet Server, Patrick has many titles under his belt; Security Guard, Cocktail Server, Bartender to name a few. Because he is always willing to lend a hand anywhere in the club, he is known by many as friendly and outgoing. He exemplifies teamwork, helping out whoever may need a hand.

Congratulations Patrick, keep up the spectacular job!!!

STAFF ENJOYING LUNCH OVER SHUTDOWN

Thanks to all our hard working employees for their continued efforts during shutdown at keeping this club clean & beautiful!

Efforts by your Board of Directors, Flag Officers, and our management team continue to result in tangible financial improvements as well as “member experience” improvements. To that end, renovations to the Commodore Room may now be completed creating a new and enjoyable dining experience and a separate relaxed lounge and sitting area. This project will incorporate some of the changes and improvements that you suggested in last year’s Club Survey. Other improvements include upgrades to the Tiki Hut & pool area, replacement of the HVAC system at the Main Clubhouse, refurbishment of chairs in Grille 1909, higher level security systems at the Main Clubhouse, Snell Isle, Sailing Center & Pass-a-Grille, and new sails for the fleet of Ideal 18 sailboats, to name a few. Please refer to page 25 of the July/August issue of Smooth Sailing to review all of the 2014/2015 Capital Projects that are completed or are currently underway. As we continue to look to the future, we have been diligently working on an update to our Strategic Plan so that our Club will remain financially stable. With all of these improvements, the Club remains free of debt. In concert with continuous scrutiny and potential reduction of the Club’s operating costs, in June, the Board approved the 2016 Budget, which included a 3% increase in dues. Last year’s zero increase felt good but is not sustainable. Over 90 % of this additional revenue will help us meet our ongoing and future maintenance and improvement of our facilities, programs, and quality of service. The balance will be allocated to ordinary fixed expenses such as increases in insurance premiums, property taxes, utilities and other business related expenditures. As previously reported, this 3% increase marks the second lowest dues increase in the past 20 years. We are aware that any increase hurts, but we feel that keeping it to that modest increase is a “win” as we continue to improve the Club and it services. It is helpful to note that 100% of all initiation fees collected are being placed into our various Capital Reserves for future capital improvements and replacements. Much of the credit for this new Budget goes to your Club Treasurer Joe Klingel and his Finance Committee. The actual details of the new Budget and your Capital Reserves are available for your review in the Chief Financial Officer’s office and I encourage you to inquire if you are interested. We are fortunate, in our opinion, to have such a great Club and for it to still be relatively affordable compared to other private clubs. The higher mission of this Club relates to yachting and social gatherings and it is a bonus to us all that we are able to enjoy it and all of its amenities at a reasonable cost. All of this is a result of the commitment and support of all of our members to make our Club a special place to enjoy camaraderie and friendship. I am grateful for your continued dedication for the betterment of our Club. Sincerely,

TH E CL

COMPETITION COMMITTEE

Members of the Cocktail Class Wooden Boat Racing Association in Virginia brought some boats to our club in March of this year to demonstrate the fun to be had in these great little boats by both adults and kids! Many of you stopped by and took rides. Many also expressed interest in getting more information and perhaps building one. In response to this interest, the Power Boat Competition committee will hold an open session on September 13, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the Quarterdeck Room to provide more information and to assess interest in forming a group in this area.

I hope you can join us! - Barbara Weller,
