Well here we are in September... school is back in session, for most of us our vacations are over, and for the Club maintenance and enhancements have been implemented over the traditional summer shutdown.
It looks absolutely wonderful and I encourage you to take a look and consider hosting an event here.
Commodore Birkenstock traveling down the East Coast on their new boat - Seaquell!
Over the summer break some stayed home and others scattered to far-flung destinations. For Trisha and I, we spent six weeks moving our new boat named “Seaquell” some 1,425 miles down the ICW from Baltimore to St Petersburg. Since we had made the trip to Baltimore and back to St Petersburg 17 years ago this particular trip was truly a sequel return to cruising for us.
Some other nice improvements made during annual maintenance shutdown include: PAG: • Final completion of A/C system • Deep cleaning throughout the building • New telephone system Downtown: • New Ceiling tiles in all of the upstairs banquet rooms • Redesign of the Pastry Shop • New ceiling speakers in the Ladies Card Room • Painting of Tiki Bar floors • Redesign of the Waterfront/Tiki Bar kitchen/pantry • Completion of Downtown Docks repair – end of August • Deep cleaning throughout the building • A/C completion in Commodore Room • New telephone system The Maintenance and Housekeeping Staff have been busy and we thank them for their efforts, accomplishments and their hard work over the summer to keep the Club looking so great!

We are glad to announce that the Notice of Race for the 2018 Race to Cuba has been posted on our SPYC website. We already have 15 boats that have registered and we’re very happy to see that there are many repeat sailors from last year. Please take a moment to review the page for details on this amazing race which we feel so fortunate to have running again. The Race will launch on Monday, February 26, 2018. While many of you were away enjoying some vacation time this summer, the Club underwent some exciting improvements – the biggest being the renovation of the banquet rooms on the 2nd floor. The carpet has been completely replaced, hardwood base 2

No boat? Then consider a “road trip”! One of the “perks” being a member of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club includes your membership with the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs, which makes you eligible to visit other FCYC Yacht Clubs all over the state of Florida. A good Club you may never visit by boat, yet in an area worth a visit by car -- The Lake Beresford Yacht Club. In 1944 The Lake Beresford Yacht Club was founded to promote the safety and enjoyment of all boat usage, improvement of fishing, protection of fish and wildlife and promotion of various social affairs desired by members. LBYC is located on the scenic shore of Lake Beresford, and connects directly to the St. Johns River. Just north of Orlando, it is surrounded by one of the most historic areas of Florida’s early history; where Steamboats traveled down on the St. Johns River, including a visit by President Grant. LBYC is just one of the many FCYC Yacht Club’s which can easily be reached by taking a scenic day trip by car “on a tank full”. SPYC Saltwater Anglers Activity Heats Up With The Temperature! Wow, lots of fishing adventures were had recently by the SPYC Saltwater Anglers (SWA)! Several member sponsored offshore trips led to some great times and plentiful catches. With the Red Snapper season extended to weekends through Labor Day, there is lots of incentive to get out and bend a rod. And talking about rod benders! Bill Mann latched onto several Goliath Groupers on an offshore wreck and couldn’t get them off the bottom. Undaunted, Bill persevered and finally landed his first Goliath. Nice Catch!

Riders Club Beat the heat and join our Riders on some local morning rides.
If you haven’t joined our Riders Club yet, look at what you’ve been missing! No motorcycle necessary, join us for a meeting and share some stories of your own rides or suggest some great routes or destinations for upcoming adventures. It’s been a busy year with our Riders traveling all over the globe. We love sharing our adventures and are always open for a new ride destination, or a great restaurant recommendation. In July we rode to the Dog House in Ruskin, and to quote one happy rider with a full belly….. “It was great! I’m talking BBQ Brisket with melted Pepper Jack Cheese, Jalapeno’s, all on Garlic Toasted Bread. Yum! Yum!”
This over-nighter found us in Steinhatchee where we enjoyed some fishing.
We ride to car shows, museums, restaurants, and sometimes wherever a winding road takes us. We meet the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Downtown Club at 6:00pm, with our next meeting scheduled for September 19th. The Riders Club next big adventure is to The Rattler in North Carolina with possibly a stay at Deals Gap during the month of September. Our own Riders Club President will be leading this ride. The Rattler has all of those twists and turns that we bikers love! Contact any member to join in the fun!

Hi everyone! The Golf Group’s last outing before the summer break was on May 23rd at Isla Del Sol. We had three groups of women and four groups of men. Coming in first place for the women were Susan Arsenault, Nydia Weinstock and Isabel Schoenberg with a score of 7 over par. Fred Alberg, Jay Marshall, John Arsenault and Buddy Gelman won first with a par performance. Numerous exciting summer plans trumped golf so the group took June and July off. We (and guests) got together at Top Golf on August 1st. It was great fun seeing everyone again! Our regular meetings reconvene on September 5th from 6-7PM (social time 5:30) and our next outing will be to the Vinoy Golf Club on Tuesday, September 26th. The course was recently renovated so you won’t want to miss this golf event! The Board for the Golf Group was expanded on August 8th in order to better support our activities and planning. Susan and John Arsenault continue to co-chair the Board. Continuing and new members include: Myra McShane, Jack Howard, Ron Hersch, Larry Heinkel, and Theresa Matthews. If you like golf, please consider joining the Golf Group. We only play once a month so it won’t likely interfere with your other golf activities. All games are scrambles and we have a fun time. If interested, please contact John and Susan Arsenault at SueatCP@aol.com.

Club Meeting and “Cruise-In” Unfortunately Mother Nature was not on our side and only one adventurous, but very beautiful Mustang Mach 1, fought the rain to attend. Once inside, the club meeting had a fantastic turn out of about 40 members. The complimentary Drink and Slider Bar made up for the gloomy weather! Bill Waters II went over the history of the club and frame work in place to make sure the club continues for many years to come. Rick Brooks gave us an update on the VMC 2017 car show and talked about the volunteers that are still needed. We have a few sponsors already, but a few more are needed to pull this all together. Club Updates: It’s that time of year for a new Board to step in and take the club to the next level. For the next 2017-2018 term we are excited to announce 2 new folks: Stephanie Mucciano as Chairman and Stewart Ahman as Vice-Chair. Past Chairman Bill Waters II will maintain an advisory role and help as needed with both the car show and club activities. Bill was very excited to have these two great club members step into leadership roles. Their passion for the club and drive to bring people together will certainly continue the success that this club has had so far. If you are not a member, would like to be, or want to help out with the VMC Car Show, please send us an email to SPYC. VMC@gmail.com - No car ownership is required.
Spicy Mah Jongg winners: Patsy Warmack (High Score & High Points in One Day (tie), Barbara Catalioto (Most Wall Games), Roslyn Beckoff (Fewest Deductions), Angela Kowalik (3rd Highest Score), not pictured Eva Hefner (2nd Highest Score & High Points in One Day (tie)
