NEW FLAG OFFICERS & TREASURER 2014-2015
l-r: Rear Commodore Bob Birkenstock, Commodore Harvey Ford, Vice Commodore Richard Winning and Treasurer Joe Klingel
IN THIS ISSUE: 2014-2015 Officers • SPYC Places 4th in Power Boat Competition • Thanksgiving Commodore’s Ball Weekend • Special Events • Weekly Specials
I want to congratulate Joe Klingel on his election as Treasurer and welcome him to the engine room. He and I, along with Vice Commodore Richard Winning and Rear Commodore Bob Birkenstock, plan to row as hard as we can for the next 12 months so as to hand off an even better Club to our successors. Also, much thanks to last year’s Board and Executive Committee and all committee members for their continued volunteerism.
COMMODORE’S LOG
G
reetings from the table next to you or the slip next to you or in the lobby or the garage or on the water. The Commodore and all Commodores are just like other members enjoying the Club, except that my special job as a member this year will be to gather the best of your ideas and to be a full time booster for our Club. And I am confident that those are not mutually exclusive efforts. So each month I will write about what you and your Club have done and what you are planning to do with your Club. Please let me know, so that I and the rest of the Club can either join you or cheer you on. With that said, I already know of a few things that our Past Commodore Matt Bryant has done and is doing. Over the course of approximately 16 years on the Executive Committee, the Board and Flag (by my count over 500 meetings), hundreds of standing committee meetings, Fleet Captain, Entertainment, Finance, House & Grounds, countless welcome and award ceremonies, dunkings, multiple Robert Bruce speeches, construction projects, management changes, chef changes, counselling with members and staff, and on and on, Matt has masterfully conducted the hard labor of Club leadership, all while preserving the dignity and mission of the Club. Such dignity and advancement of our mission has to start at the top and, while watching from my good sideline seats, I can tell you that Matt has furthered that mission from the top. More will be said at the Commodore’s Ball, but please congratulate and thank Matt (and Laura) on his leadership when you see him. 2

Someone recently asked me about my platform for the year and I told them it was plywood. Of course I missed the point, but maybe I didn’t. The members have platforms and maybe the Board does too, but I don’t have one. I would consider it a good year if I got to race my boat plenty with Kathleen and my kids, hung out on the Main Dock with that fun group, sustained the existing monthly contribution to our reserves of approximately $85,000, continued to avoid a food minimum charge (as is incurred at 16 of 19 Florida clubs recently polled), continued to avoid any debt charges (as is incurred at a majority of those same clubs), added another 118 new members as we did last year, continued to drastically reduce the food and beverage subsidy (thanks to the sharp eye of our new General Manager), relaxed by the Tiki Bar (thanks to Misty), had dinner at Pass-a-Grille (entertained by Vanessa McCambridge, our multi-talented PAG manager), visited several clubs in other parts of the world via our reciprocity, watched the Grand Prix and fireworks from our decks, gassed-up my fishing boat and got bait at Snell Isle at a discounted price, parked under cover for free on Beach Drive, had dinner at 1909 and walked to a movie, built a gingerbread house, shopped for Christmas at the Salties Bazaar, ate a $6 hamburger with a bunch of fun, loud people, got free hors d’oeuvres in the lounge…the hits go on and on…you just have to look for them. I encourage you all to not wait for an invitation to take advantage of what the Club offers, go get it! Yes, we pay dues, but the next time you want to park on Beach Drive for free, please appreciate your Club, the next time you need an event at a beautiful location in downtown St. Pete, please appreciate your Club, and the next time you feel like going sailing and you don’t have (or want) a boat, call our Sailing Center, and with no insurance cost, bottom jobs or maintenance, you can simply go sailing. Please enjoy your Club and please be a booster. I do and I am. -Harvey Ford

We wrapped up with the shortest race of the season. The fast boats were on a five leg windward/leeward course and the Cruisers had a shorter course with a gybe. The forecast 1:30pm had been dismal. Based on the latest predictions and simple observations the race committee decided it was a go. Then our radar indicated some of that forecast weather could be y coming. We shortened at the second leg. And as we returned repared sh Salads, to shore the threatened weather came in with strong gusts and h Entrees, lots of lightning. We were glad to be in just in time. Power Boat Competition: SPYC places 4th in NAI competition!
T
he 2014 NAI SPYC team, composed of Fay Baynard, Robert and Sharon Van Landingham and Wayne Dewey, traveled to San Diego, California in early September to represent our club in the 2014 Annual North American Invitational (NAI) predicted log contest held on September 8th event pits the Wayne Dewey, Fay Baynard, Sharon VanLandingham, Robert VanLandingham “Best of the Best” Predicted Log Racers against each other and can be considered the “America’s Cup” of Log Racing. A challenging contest; this event incorporates both the “new” and “old” school methods of log racing. Fay Baynard and her team finished 4th of competition which included 4 previous NAI winners! Calling all power and sail boaters ... we are looking for a few competitive-natured boaters who can challenge themselves as to how well they know their boat! The Power Boat Competition committee is looking to work with and encourage ALL members including actives, intermediates and juniors to become involved in competitive boating. If you would like to become involved in helping to shape the competitive boating opportunities at our club ... I’d love to speak with you! Please call Phyllis at 727-822-3873 for more information. See you on the water ... Barbara Weller, Power Boat Competition Chair

The 2015 Parking Decals will be mailed towards the end of November. Please be sure to keep a lookout for them.
After receiving the decals in the mail – • Parking Decals are to be placed on the back side of the rear view mirror. • In the event that you are in need of an additional decal: • A max of 3 decals total per membership is allowed with proper documentation. • Vehicle registrations or insurance cards in the member’s name for EACH vehicle owned must be presented in order to receive an additional decal. • If a member has more than 3 cars, and is driving a car without a decal, your membership card will be accepted. • Should you purchase a new vehicle: please remove the decal from your former car and place it on your new vehicle • In the event that the decal is damaged in the process, decal in and exchange for a new one. 6 6 please return the old - November 2014
Our goal is to assure available parking for our members and, unfortunately, in the past there have been some liberties taken with the decals. It has been our policy to accommodate all members, regardless of the number vehicles, but due to increased usage of the garage, we must limit the number of decals issued. We feel this is a fair procedure and is in the best interest of the Club as a whole. Decals are no longer handled through the Membership Office. With the proper paperwork, an additional decal may be obtained through Maria DeBord – 727-892-6886 or spyc-payables@tampabay.rr.com

Cruising Fleet
by Angela Kowalik, Fleet Captain
Welcome Aboard …
I
n October, we had a “passing of the flag” and transitioned Fleet Captain from Barbara Weller to me, Angela Kowalik. I’m excited to take on this responsibility, working with our Fleet Committee, for Cruising Fleet activities. Barbara is not far away, she is still part of the Fleet Committee and also the Power Boat Competition Chair, so we will still be working together often to enhance the Fleet and boating experiences at SPYC! Our last cruise in September was to Sarasota Yacht Club. Although the weather didn’t seem that cooperative, we had a great turnout. Those making the trip by boat were: Port Directors Barbara & Heber Weller on Clifton, Richard & Judy Phagan on Inertia, Roy & Jeannie Chapman on Blue Eyes, Nancy & John Dunn on Nan Sea, Biff & Stephany Judd on Barefootin’, Angela & Brian Kowalik on Marquesa, Mark & Cynthia Carron on Seaduction, Max & Laura Fulmer on Chaos, and Bert & Susan Rachel on Water Solutions. On Friday night, we had docktails and dinner at SYC joined by Iron-Dinghy-ers Ed & Isabel Hanna and Pete & Sandy Privertia. Saturday was a walking “poker run” around St. Armands Circle with prizes for “best hand” (tie: Fulmer & Dunn), and “worst hand” (Chapman). Later back at the docks, we held a Docktail Quest (an adult Easter Egg Hunt of sorts that turned into a grab bag and trade fest due to the weather, and thus was renamed). Afterwards that evening, several of us enjoyed dinner back in St. Armand’s in a restaurant that opened to the stars! Sunday morning, the club provided mini scones and coffee on the porch overlooking the marina. It was an enjoyable weekend. Looking ahead, our cruise in January will be to our own docks downtown. Sign-up for this cruise will be at the November Luncheon. We may also have sign-up for our February cruise at this time as well. As we have done with all our cruises, sign-up opens first at the Monthly Meeting for those in attendance, and with the Sailing Secretary and on the website after that time.
Barbara Weller, Angela Kowalik
Our activities for the remainder of 2014 include • Blessing of the Fleet – Sunday, November 9, during Commodore’s Ball Weekend • Cruising Fleet Luncheon – Thursday, November 13 at noon. Our speaker Dave Soderlund will present “Around Cape Horn” • Annual Awards Holiday Dinner & Party – Saturday, December 13 Please call our Sailing Secretary Phyllis to sign-up for our activities, cruise and/or luncheon reservations at 727-822-3873 or email her at sailingsecretary@spyc. org. I look forward to serving as SPYC Fleet Captain, and hope to see you on the water…

here was a great turnout for the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook in September. Forty players were ready to test their skills on this prestigious course. However, the Golf Gods were not with us this day as the skies opened after only a few holes were played, and play was suspended. The Pro was very gracious and gave everyone a voucher to come back later in the year. Another miscue happened in September, when our monthly speaker cancelled at the last minute. Greg Fisher was kind enough to step up and entertain us with a variety of games to play on the golf course. All games involve betting, of course. The October meeting tested our putting skills. Greg Fisher provided the putting mat and had everyone competing to make two putts from various distances. Chuck Abro was the big winner, making 2 putts from the full distance of the mat.

ur ARC members use HF SSB radio because it has a lot of benefits over other means of communication. For sailors over 20 miles offshore where cell phones and VHF radio won’t work, it provides added safety, current weather, and two way communications with many other sailors on land and at sea. This can be a huge benefit if you have medical or technical problems on board. Plus, it is always nice to talk with a community of sailors about their travels and experiences. Think the Regata del Sol al Sol. We have a web page to support the Regata. Go to the link at the bottom, then click on the top left tab. For those who wish to follow you as you sail, instead of having a blog, anyone can read status messages left by you (sailors) with amateur radios http://14300.net/logger/position-reports.php or even listen to you live on the web! The Amateur Radio Club has a ham shack at SPYC where we talk to sailors and others on HF. In the next few months some of the meetings will be at the ham shack in the Parkview room. Come by and get a chance to socialize in person or on the air with others.
SPYC ARC socializes on-the-air every Monday on our VHF Net at 17:30 on 147.030 MHz where people join us locally or from around the world on Echolink. Let’s all stay in contact from wherever we are in the world and have fun with Amateur Radio. ‘73s. https://sites.google.com/site/spycamateurradioclub/ 11 November 2014 11 - November 2014

embers of the Wing Shooters Society gathered on Friday morning September 12th, at the Sarasota Gun Club for another informal weekly fellowship shoot. A lot of clay targets were busted along with many myths about the shotgunning prowess of the gathered club members. The Friday shoot was followed by a Saturday morning, September 13th, fun shoot organized by the Sarasota Gun Club. This 100-target competition shoot was open to the public, and the SPYC was well represented in the action. The targets were fast, and the action was faster, but our Field Marshals, PC Sandy “Shotgun” Schoenberg, Bob “Rabbit” Birkenstock and John “Pull” Hanner led the competing SPYC marksmen

in a blazing demonstration of the latent gunning skills that has become our trademark. Following the competition, The Sarasota Gun Club served a delicious barbecue lunch, and everyone came away with great memories and sore shoulders. The Wing Shooters Society is an association of St. Petersburg Yacht Club Members interested in participating in shotgun clay target shooting sports and/or game bird wing shooting sports. Currently, the group is about 25 members and growing. Membership is open to SPYC members with an interest in honing their shotgun skills with a like-minded group of guys.
