SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH
COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 01 – Welcome to a new year! As the watch changes and I write my first column, I want to give my sincere thanks to the Commodorable Kathleen Ford for lending us our now Past Commodore Harvey Ford. Paddling furiously, Harvey as I know has spent many countless hours over the past four years, especially this last one doing a yeoman’s job, not only at the club but in making sure that this club has held its place as a premier Yacht Club; in not only the sailing / yachting world but as a pillar to this community. I can speak not only for myself but also Vice Commodore Birkenstock and Rear Commodore Klingel in saying “Thank You” Harvey for keeping us on a tight course, it has been a true pleasure working together! I know you and the Commodorable have put together a great evening for us at this year’s Commodore Ball on the 14th. Here’s wishing that you and Kathleen enjoy your new boat, days sailing with calm seas and being that booster member of this great club. As with the change of watch, I would like to welcome our returning board members Jim Henderson and George Pennington, our Intermediate board member Jeff Locker, as well as your new Treasurer Jim Byrne and Secretary Jackie O’Brien who I look forward to working with in the coming months. The Executive Committee has a few new faces and great ideas in steering this club on its future course. One of our many committees, the Regatta General, has filled the calendar with some great regattas (after all we are the Sailing Capital) along with continuing to work to bring back the Havana Cup, which last took place in 1959. It is these groups that are the brawn behind the Commodore and Board in pulling it all together. As a club we are always looking for new members, ideas and advice and we hope you as members will help us attain these goals.
The Legacy… Oh, I have been asked what my legacy will be and I have replied if you have great food, service and a fun time then my legacy has been accomplished. Marc Reydams, Chef Joseph and all of the staff both here and Pass-a-Grille have done a fabulous job this past year with all the events, regattas, etc.… in providing quality and class along with containing costs (a $271,000 improvement in net income for the year) and providing us a club we can all be proud of. My hat is off to all of you! Past Commodores, you all have put in tireless hours over the years in upholding the warm traditions of this club, and I look forward to leaning on you for your advice in the upcoming months. In closing, as we enter into our busy season and New Year don’t forget to stop by the Salty Sisters Christmas Boutique for a little Christmas shopping. Relax and have a cocktail and a great meal at the Main Clubhouse or Passa-Grille, visit the Tiki Bar or our new Commodores room and lounge (what a great menu the chef has in store for us). Enjoy a day of sailing at the Sailing Center or kayaking at Snell Isle. Plan to attend one of the many club events held throughout the year. And lastly don’t forget our renowned Junior Sailing program, which has produced some of the finest and most highly competitive sailors in the world. Get your kids involved. My father Past Commodore Winning had a great expression “It ain’t easy having fun.” So heed the advice and have fun!
Richard B. Winning Commodore

Welcome Aboard!!!
Well, as they say…Once you have fallen into the water, you’re not scared of water any more. With my first year as Fleet Captain under my cap, and we begin this new SPYC year yet close out the calendar year, I’m ready to unwind, rewind and repeat! So here’s what’s goin’ on with the Cruising Fleet: Ahoy Mates! In September, twelve boaters cruised to Little Harbor (9/18-9/20) for the weekend. It so happened to be international “Talk Like a Pirate” day that weekend, so who better to arrange the activities than Port Directors and Chief Pirates Richard and Judi Phagan aboard Phantasy, planning a great weekend for all of us. Also joining by vessel were other pirateers: Brian & Angela Kowalik on Marquesa Les & Nancy Bauer on Bella Vita Heber & Barbara Weller on Clifton Ken & Andrea Beil on Hatta Dream Steve & Marie Proctor Reel Crazy Allen & Pam Thomas on Satisfaction Biff & Stephanie Judd on BareFootin’ Ken & Corrine St. Jean on Phantom Elwyn & Carol Segrest on Fish E Business Steve & Dian Ravenel on Moondancer Joe & Ginny Sadler on SLO-GIN (Sat only)
Why not join us for our next Fleet Luncheon Meeting on Thursday, November 12 at noon. Being our last program this year, we’ll learn about the history of SPYC featuring guest speaker Barbara Watson, an avid sailor and our own SPYC Historian. We will continue sign-up for our January cruise to Gulfport, and begin sign-up for our February cruise to our own SPYC downtown docks at that time. Also, I hope all of you will join us for our annual Blessing of the Fleet on Sunday, November 15. Our Club Chaplain P/C Bruce Watters will provide the blessing, accompanied by our incoming Flag Officers and Fleet Captain (yours truly). Be a part of this historic tradition! For Monthly Meeting reservations, contact the Catering Office at 727-892-6887 or 6882 or spyccatering@tampabay.rr.com. For inquiries about the Cruising Fleet, or to sign-up for our activities or cruises, contact Member.Services@spyc.org, or Fleet.Captain@spyc.org, or use the SPYC website. I look forward to serving again as SPYC Fleet Captain, and hope to see you on the water… - Angela Kowalik, Fleet Captain
On Friday, Les & Nancy Bauer hosted all of us for docktails aboard Bella Vita (this ain’t yer ordinary poop deck), where we began our swaggering pirateness, no shoes – peg legs okay! Later we walked the plank and boarded golf carts to pillage around the resort before journeying for grub at the Sunset Grill. Joining us on Saturday by iron dinghy were Tim & Dianne Connolly, and Bob & Andrea Merriman. That morning, several of us took a field trip, via carpool, to the family business of Elwyn & Carol Segrest, Segrest Farms. Elwyn and Carol provided us an insightful tour and educated us about how they grew this business from a childhood fascination to a worldwide enterprise in supplying wholesale ornamental fish and other tropical & aquatic specimens. It was just amazing! After the tour, we had lunch at a local Cuban restaurant before returning to our vessels for a wee nap or refresher. That evening we raided another ship for fresh supplies and other things, fended off by Steve & Dian Ravenel hosting docktails aboard Moondancer, where we filled our bellies with anything we could get our hooks into while telling stories of the day or the past. Ayyy mateys, thank you all for coming for another great Cruising Fleet weekend. See you again in two fortnights! REMAINING 2015 EVENTS for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy: • Cruising Fleet Luncheon – Thursday, Nov 12, 2015 at noon • November Blessing of the Fleet – Sunday Nov 15 • Cruising Fleet tables at the Commodore’s Ball (Sat Nov 14) and Jazz Brunch (Nov 15) • Lighting of the Yachts – Saturday Dec 5 • December Annual Holiday & Awards Dinner – Friday Dec 11 6

You will not want to miss our Patchington Fashion Show, featuring our Ladies Beach Club Models who will wear the latest resort and holiday fashions. We had a great start to our 2015-2016 season with Dr. Ann Weaver, “The Dolphin Lady,” as our guest speaker at our September meeting and luncheon.
As the summer heat subsides, we have been having larger turnouts for our weekly shoots. The wet weather during September flooded most of our regular shooting venues and we had to revert to some other locations like FishHawk Ranch and Ancient Oaks. On Friday October 2nd, we had a good shoot at FishHawk Ranch and after the shoot tested the Golden Margaritas at the new Bass Pro Shop. Our regular monthly meeting on October 8th was brief this month so most of the members attending could take part in the Ducks Unlimited annual banquet which was held the same night upstairs in the SPYC Ballroom. The Wing Shooters sponsored two tables at the Banquet and we all had a great time while supporting this worthwhile conservation organization. This month we welcome a new Wing Shooter, Wayne Andrews, and remind everyone that our membership is always open to SPYC members. Just ask any WSS member or contact Jack Cartier at 727-235-2726. The September outing at Waterlefe G.C. was enjoyed by 19 loyal golfers. The round was completed just as the rains came down. Winning team was Larry Heinkel, Fred Alberg and Matt Frye. Second place was the team of Isabel Schoenberg, Karen Lieberman, Joe Hartman and David Bertauski. Close to pin winners were David Evans, Bob Weingartner, Dawn Eckhart and David Bertauski. As always, the 19th hole brought good food and great camaraderie, and possibly a few good stories about “great shots” of the day.
During our next meeting at SPYC Downtown on November 17th, we will help more members setup their laptops for remote HF operation. Everyone should be able to enjoy HF radio from the comforts of their home. Every SPYC member is welcome to join us. We may soon move most of our meetings to PAG on Mondays at Net time. Net time is when we socialize on-the-air every Monday on our VHF Net at 17:30 on 147.030 MHz, where people join us locally or from around the world on Echolink. Let’s all stay in contact from wherever we are in the world and have fun with Amateur Radio. ‘73s. https://sites.google.com/site/spycamateurradioclub/

The speaker for our October meeting was Patrick Walsh, giving insight on “Golf and Where It’s Going”. Patrick was our guest speaker in 2007. He is now General Manager at River Wilderness C.C. in Parrish; one of our favorite venues. Patrick’s talk was about how golf courses have to change to meet the demands of a younger clientele with varying needs, time constraints, family commitments and money issues, plus catering to older members who cannot play to the level they used to. The group thoroughly enjoyed his perspective on these issues.

Sixteen members had a most informative discussion ADS-B Flyingon Club Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast. At our last monthly meeting Russell Savela CFII, our speaker, disclosed the FAA rules and how to equip our trusty steeds before the bewitching hour on December 31, 2019. He said Uncle Sam had set this drop dead date to comply, but gifted us with free weather and traffic in the cockpit. It’s all good! We will be discussing more about this in the future as NDB’s and VOR’s get the boot. Russ will give us more information as it is released. On September 15th Payton Yon, Max Fulmer and I flew in his Cirrus to River Ranch, about 80 nautical miles on a heading of 87°, almost due east of St. Petersburg SPG. There we were graciously greeted and escorted throughout the vast acreage dotted with buildings, where we are planning a 2 to 3 day fly- in. It’s about a two-hour drive by iron dinghy. River Ranch is a resort where you can golf, swim, shoot, skeet and trap, horseback ride, and even take in a rodeo every Saturday night. We are planning to have this event in March 2016 so come to our next meeting November 8 for more details. At that meeting we will be conducting the Annual Election of officers, so this is your time to get involved and help make this Flying Club one of the best!
Weather around River Ranch
Max Fulmer at River Ranch getting another piece of pie
On our way back the flight took 40 minutes, a little longer than we expected, as weather challenged Payton’s Cirrus; so he skillfully contacted McDill tower and was granted direct SPG over the deck level, at 100 feet hitting 200 knots. We beat the storm!! See you on November 8th.

November 18: “History of the Vinoy” featuring our own Shirley Barbel Don’t miss the fascinating 90-year story of the Vinoy! Even if you are a native of St. Pete or if you have taken the History Tour in the past, you may be surprised at what you did not know about a hidden vault, a red light, the ballroom floor, the tower, the strange “tea,” a ghost, and much more! Shirley has been a history docent at the Vinoy for more than 17 years. She also facilitates our Book Group and is a docent with the MFA. Come see her in action – she’s a real pro! Regatta Room: Social time – 5:00 PM Meeting and Program: 5:30 PM Our September and October program meetings were very informative and useful. Junior Activities Conditions on Saturday were beautiful, with 8-10 knots from the SW. The RC was able to get in 3 races before a summer storm ended racing for the day. Unfortunately on Sunday the weather gods did not cooperate and racing was canceled at 10:30 due to storms. Harrison Molesky put together a consistent regatta to take home first place overall followed by Mason Sullivan in second and Peyton Weaver in third. Competing for SPYC were Zachary Jennings in 11th, Ava Shakespeare in 12th, Taylor Brown in 16th, Karrington Hansen in 24th and Lily Berget in 28th. Also on the water for SPYC and sailing in their first regatta ever were Adam and Reid Mendelblatt, Sidney Jones, Summer Gilroy, Rosie Simpson, Jackson Jones, Henry Icely and Sofia Fuller.

Over the weekend of September 12-13, SPYC hosted the annual Bruce Watters Green Fleet Regatta. This is a particularly special regatta, as it is solely for sailors competing in the Opti Green Fleet and is the first regatta ever for many of its competitors. This year’s event hosted 47 sailors from much of the Florida west coast.

The following weekend SPYC hosted the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association single-handed championships, which also served as the qualifier for the High School single-handed national championships. SPYC was well represented with Hannah Steadman finishing 4th overall followed closely by Josh Dochoda in 5th. Also competing for were Blaire McCarthy, Nevin Avila, Kyle Dochoda, Emily Wright and Grant Boicheff. SPYC was well represented at the first High School South Points Regatta of the year. The program had 34 sailors in attendance representing Shorecrest Prep, St Pete High, Lakewood High and Compass Rose Academy. Heather Kerns traveled to the USODA Southeast Championships hosted at Camp Seagull in North Carolina. In a competitive 89 boat fleet, Heather sailed consistently and finished 7th overall and also took home the prize for top girl. Todd Fedyszyn Youth Sailing Director

Fall Bay Race 2015
AND THE LEUKEMIA CUP KICK OFF PARTY
October 10, 2015 Janet Walker, Chair
The St Petersburg Yacht Club was proud to host the annual Fall Bay Race, which this year included the Kickoff Party for the Leukemia Cup Regatta 2016. Thirty boats participated in this fun oneday regatta on two separate courses: a windward/leeward course and a distance course for cruising boats, which raced around government marks in Tampa Bay. After a short shower, it was a picture perfect racing day with sunshine and light consistent breezes. Following the patio barbeque, we were treated to an inspiring historical sailing presentation by Gary Jobson, who, as well as being a notable sailing icon, is the national chair for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. SPYC Commodore Harvey Ford received from Jobson the deed of gift for a gorgeous silver cup, the Ted Irwin Memorial Leukemia Cup, which will become the perpetual trophy for the Leukemia Cup Regatta. This trophy was generously donated by Ted Irwin’s family.
The kickoff party included beer and a silent auction. All race results are on yachtscoring.com. Ford and Jobson presented the three SPYC perpetual trophies: The George Dewar Perpetual Trophy for the overall spinnaker winner went to Wicked Witch, skippered by Joe Blouin; the Bruce Watters Perpetual Trophy for first place non-spinnaker was awarded to skipper Hall Palmer on One Up; and the Hammill–Jones Cruising Trophy was awarded to Ron Kinney and Olanda Manzano, sailing their boat, Mi Sueño. Congratulations to all!! This regatta could not take place without an excellent race committee, headed by PRO Gina Bowden-Pierce, George and Beth Pennington, Diana Sowers and Selga Sakss on Baby Doll Too; Bill Ballard, Shirley Rigo and Tom Pierce on Osprey; Bob Johnson, Stew Ahman and Jerry Harris on Coast Pilot; Gloria Davis, Nancy Dunn and Pete Privitera on Kokomo; and Tommy Wheatley and Janet Walker, plus the SPSC staff and SPYC staff.

LTJG Jay “Trip” Fernandes - The USCGC HEALY, America’s premier high latitude Arctic research vessel/ ice breaker, reached a historic milestone by being the first American surface ship to reach the North Pole unaccompanied. Jopie Helsen, member of the St, Petersburg Yacht Club since 1967, and owner of the Sailor’s Wharf in St. Petersburg, FL, was awarded the “2015 Member of the Year by SWFMIA” (Southwest Florida Marine Industries Association) at their recent annual dinner. Many people have great ideas and good intentions, but few have the focus and drive it takes to carry through. Fortunately for the Marine Industry, Jopie Helsen is one of those few. His success as a worldclass racing sailor, a boat manufacturer, and since 1978, owner of St. Petersburg’s The Sailor’s Wharf Yacht Yard is well known. Jopie’s leadership and energy has been the catalyst in the growth of the Southwest Florida Marine Industries Association in the Tampa Bay area. He has worked tirelessly to educate business and government leaders on the economic impact of recreational boating, the need for responsible management of Southwest Florida’s magnificent waterfront, and the importance of promoting the boating lifestyle to residents and visitors. Husband, Father, Business Owner, Marine Industry Veteran, and Friend. Thanks Jopie for all you do.
Congratulations Jopie Helsen on this extraordinary “Life Accomplishment!” 18
