Note From the GM

Greetings Winchester Members, On behalf of the staff and myself, welcome to the 2017 season at WCC! I arrived here from Richmond at the end of February, and these first few months have been quite an adventure, with a great deal of focus on reenergizing our teams and laying the foundation for a new/fresh beginning. I’d like to quickly share some guiding principles that we will be relying on as we head into this new chapter:

Down at the bubble, our tennis program has undergone significant change and is now under the leadership of our new Tennis Director, Jamie Morgan. I want to recognize both Emil Vassilev and Kyra Fox for their hard work and long hours keeping things afloat during this transition period, and couldn’t be more excited for Jamie and Emil to continue the tradition of fantastic tennis coaching and camaraderie.

1) The only way the Club will grow is through having members be enthusiastic about its future as a private club dedicated to benefiting their family’s health and lifestyle.

We also have lots of exciting events and changes in the clubhouse. It’s no secret that the restaurant usage declined when the food minimum was removed last year (this may be reinstated at some point, but with all beverage spending being allowed to count towards the minimum), but decline of service and quality in general have created significant opportunities for improvement. Michele and Chef Michael are working through a long list of these, and while progress takes time there are significant improvements being made. Sunday Brunches are back with great attendance; a wine club is forming with monthly dinners; and weekly specials are drawing increasingly larger crowds.

2) The Club must provide member/guest experiences that are relevant to our members (and future members’) lives as they exist today. 3) Having paid an initiation and dues, members should receive good value with other purchases made at the Club. 4) A wonderful member experience begins with a wonderful employee experience and happy team members who are excited to come to work each day. 5) Communication about what is happening at the Club must be regular, clear and transparent. As we look around the property, our golf course is looking extremely healthy as we head into the summer months. George and his team are going to keep the greens rolling fast and true, with well-manicured tee boxes and fairways and playable rough. Weather is always a controlling factor, but I am very pleased with where the course is today and feel confident that course condition will meet or exceed expectations with a nearly 20% cost savings over prior years. Andy and Trent have things running as steady and smooth as ever at the golf shop and practice range. Andy’s leadership and organization has been invaluable. Our ladies groups are growing and new junior programs expanding.

4

Complimentary Kids Club is now in full gear. Led by Kyra Fox, Kids Club will be available for members’ children to enjoy while their parents have fun in other parts of the club… whether for date night, a round of golf, or a game of tennis and a swim. This is not babysitting, but a place at the club for kids to call their own and want to come to. There’s even a game room next door for early teens to play some pool or just hang out. This is your club. We want you to be proud of it and have it feel like a genuine extension of your home for your family and friends. Our hope to reestablish the club as a vibrant and integral part of Winchester’s next 100 years. Thank you for wanting to play your part. We’ve only just begun. See you at the club!

Martin, General Manager

Greetings, WCC Members! What a fun three months it has been! The family that exists within the club’s membership is awesome, and makes it genuinely exciting to sell the club. I’m happy to have the opportunity to grow the membership and thank you for your support through my first few months. Those who have taken my yoga class, thank you for sharing you practice with me! For those who have yet to This year, the club has grown in membership by 40, and that is all in just the past three months! Golf There is a great deal of positive activity within the WCC Golf Operation as we reach the mid-point of 2017. Leading the charge is the PGA Junior League Golf Team. The WCC Junior Team has been working hard to prepare for the scheduled matches to be played in June and July. The “travel team” boasts 16 juniors ranging in age from 7 to 13. These juniors embody the WCC Junior Golf motto “The Next Generation Playing Through”. WCC ladies are competing once again in the Mason Dixon League. The WCC Mason Dixon Team won the League in 2015 and the team is looking to repeat the feat in 2017. Many of our lady golfers are also participating in the Tri-County League. This is the first year WCC has participated in this league. In total, the 2 leagues offer 15 opportunities for WCC ladies to play in events. There are golf groups looking for members to join them in the fun of playing the WCC course. The Ladies 18-Hole group plays on Tuesday mornings. The Tigers 9-Hole ladies group plays on Wednesdays mornings. The Senior Men’s Group plays on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, while the 9-Hole Twilight group plays on Wednesday evenings providing a great opportunity for those looking to get out on the course after work. If you are interested in joining up with any of these groups please do not hesitate to contact me. The WCC Golf Committee has been working hard to make the golf calendar of events and activities the best it can be by offering a wide variety or tournaments and programs for WCC members. New to the golf calendar are 4 “Open” events. There will be a Senior “Open” on Thursday, June 22nd. The “Open” Pairs Tournament will be held on Saturday, July 1st. The “Open” Mixed Pairs Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 26th and the “Open” 4-Player Team Tournament will be held on Sunday, August 27th. I hope to see you at the club soon.
