MEMBERSHIP News

Dear Members, It’s hard to believe Labor Day is upon us and the summer long festivities and vacations are coming to an end. With that being said, things certainly are not coming to an end at the Club. As you will see in this newsletter we have plenty of programming to keep you active throughout the remainder of the year! So as always, make your reservations early so that you’re sure not to miss out!! Along with the great events scheduled we’ve been able to complete a lot of the Clubhouse renovations. If you haven’t had an opportunity to get out to the Club in the past several weeks, be sure to, it’s an exciting time! One major addition to the Club is the new Fitness Room! To help enhance your fitness needs we have partnered with Mac James of Future of Fitness. Mac and his staff will perform an initial assessment for interested Members and tailor workout programs that fit your individual needs. In addition, they are putting together regular classes that will be held at the Club for you to participate in. We have also re-furnished the dining rooms with all new chairs, re-carpeted the Ladies Locker Room, Golf Shop and Downstairs Foyer, painted the exterior and interior of the Clubhouse, renovated the Main Foyer and have added new artwork, photographs and furnishings throughout the Club. At the pool we have added new chase lounges and chairs and on the Golf Course we just completed installing 20,000 square feet of fescue sod to several green surrounds. As I said, it’s an exciting time and in speaking with the Membership, it’s great to see and hear everyone joining us in our enthusiasm in making the Club a more welcoming environment for your family, friends and business associates to enjoy. You have also probably seen many new Member faces around the Club. With your help and the help of the entire Woodmore staff, we have been fortunate to add close to one hundred new Members to our Woodmore family this year and we are adding new Members every day. As you know this is essential in maintaining the health of the Club and continuing our aggressive Capital Improvement programs. There are some great benefits to referring new Members to the Club so if you have a friend, colleague or family member you think would be a good fit for Membership, please contact Jane Whittington at jwhittington@ccwoodmore.com or via phone at 301.249.6100. As always I want to thank you for your continued support of the Club and our efforts to elevate your Member and guest experience. It is through your feedback both positive and negative that we will continue to grow and move forward. Sincerely, Jon Patrick General Manager

If I can be of any assistance to you regarding your membership, please don’t hesitate to call me 301 249-8589. Or feel free to stop by and say hello any time Tuesday – Saturday 8:30 – 5:30. Hope you are having a terrific summer! Best Regards, Jane Whittington, Director of Membership

THOUGHT FROM THE PRO Release the club! Don’t forget what happens after you make contact! If you’re holding the face open after contact, you can bet the ball will go to the right either as a push or a push-slice. To further rid the slice from your game make sure that you release the club which requires the turn of the body, extension of the arms and roll of the wrists. You’ll soon see that how you think about your shot and how the body performs actually can have an effect on helping you make better swings and hit more consistent shots! Respectfully Submitted, John Kauzlarich Club Professional

TENNIS News

The Tennis Beat

by John Fears, Director of Tennis USPTA

Salutations Members. Well, all good happenings regrettably come to an end. September is the last month of the 2013 tennis season. But there is still time to enjoy our recurring programs, i.e., men’s and women’s doubles on Tuesday evenings, mixed doubles on Thursday evenings, and the Saturday clinics. Below is a list of tennis activities that may be of interest to members and their guests. September 7-8, 2013, The Mid-Eastern Tennis Association (META) will have a USTA-sanctioned tournament at Woodmore. This tourney is accessible to all players who possess a USTA membership. On September 9, 2013, we are honored to host, again, the PEPCO Tennis and Golf Outing. On behalf of the Club’s management, staff, and members we express our appreciation for this opportunity. On September 20, 2013, we will host the Mount Jezreel Tennis and Golf Outing. This is our first opportunity to host this event. We, the tennis staff, will do our best to ensure that they want to come back again and again.

On September 21, 2013, Woodmore’s Members and Guests Autumn Round Robin Tennis Party will be held. This party is a thankful recognition of your support for our efforts. It will be held from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The rain date is Sunday, September 22, 2013 from 3:00-5:00 pm. There will be games and prizes. Juniors are welcome. Finally, on September 23, 2013, the Mid-Atlantic Senior Clay Court Championship, a USTA event, ‘Age before Youth, Wisdom before Knowledge.’ This event will feature players who are 70 years old or older. In the 2012 season, the oldest participants in this tourney were in their 90s. They say that tennis is a lifetime sport. Be a spectator of this event and you will see for yourself the meaning of those words. If you have any questions or inquiries, please call the tennis center at 301.390.0937 or sent an email to jfears5979@aol.com . If you wish to have access to the courts, please sign in at the tennis center bulletin board or call our Membership Concierge at 301.249.6100. On behalf of the tennis center staff, we thank you for your support. Note: After the season is officially over (October 1, 2013), it has been a tradition to leave the nets up on courts #1 and #2 until the end of November. This custom will continue.

Tennis Tip:

Hit a Scissor Kick Overhead Once the lob is up, turn sideways so that your dominant leg, i.e., right leg for right-handed players, is behind you, raise your racquet and point your non-racquet hand at the incoming ball. As you move backward take a drop step or balance step with your left leg, and then another drop step as you prepare to jump. If the ball is deeper in the court, take another crossover step or make adjustments with shuffle steps. When you jump, your momentum will be headed backward. The jump should be a boost to your swing and provide energy as you accelerate toward the ball. Finally, as you swing, your right leg springs up and your left leg kicks forward. This will counter-balance your backward momentum and allow you to make solid contact before you land on your left leg, ready to move in for another shot. (Tip given by Joey Rive, co-author of Tennis Skills and Drills.)

GREEN News

Greetings from the Green Department! I hope that everyone has had a great summer both on and off of the golf course. For the most part, the weather was very kind to us this year and the golf course has held up very well throughout July and August. With that said, I would like to remind everyone that the golf course will be closed September 10th-12th so that the staff can perform several important cultural practices. Besides completing our regularly scheduled greens aerification, we will also be aggressively verticutting the fairways, as well as performing core aerification in the rough. In the past, we would traditionally complete one of these tasks and move on to the next as play and tournaments schedules allowed, resulting what amounted to between a month to a month and half of the golf course having some sort of disturbance. If the weather cooperates with us during this closure, we will be able to complete all of these tasks in just one week, which will result in better, more consistent conditions for the membership throughout the fall golf season. Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience as we complete these important practices.

FITNESS ROOM The Country Club at Woodmore is proud to announce a partnership with the area’s top boot camp and training facility, Future of Fitness. The Future of Fitness staff will be holding training sessions and golf-inspired classes at our brand new, gym facility. Mac James, the owner of Future of Fitness, is a member of our Country Club and an avid golfer. He has been in the personal training business for over 15 years. He has had the opportunity to work with numerous NFL, NBA, and collegiate athletes (including several rising, talented golfers). His passion for golf has inspired him to develop a golf-specific strength training program. He is also a certified Fascial Stretch Therapist and has a masseuse on staff to help improve flexibility and recovery. Future of Fitness is also one of the only training facilities in the area with a TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) certified trainer. In September, Future of Fitness will welcome you to our new fitness center with free golf fitness assessments. These assessments will use 5 key exercises to check your flexibility, strength, and range of motion. You will also get a body fat analysis and circumference measurements. All of this will help the Future of Fitness staff to develop a personalized, guided program to help you reach your goals. These assessments will be available by appointment, so schedule yours today!
