GENERAL MANAGER

News

Greetings Woodmore Members; As the 2017 golf season is slowly coming to a close, and the Holiday season is just around the corner, we turn our focus to “Thanks and Giving”. For the last newsletter, of the year, I would simply like to sincerely express my gratitude and appreciation, to all our members, whom supported and helped guide me through the transition to General Manager. It has been an exciting year and I’ve had the amazing opportunity to learn a great deal, at our Club. For the entire month of November, each Department Director, has been tasked with creating a “Friendsgiving” opportunity. For example; our Director of Membership, Greg Rotzell is offering an additional referral incentive for our membership. If you refer a friend, and they join before Thanksgiving, your Thanksgiving Dinner is on us!! Director of Golf, Brandon Meadows, will be offering a “Friendsgiving” weekday guest rate for the rest of November. It’s simply our way of saying “Thank you” for all that you have and continue to do, to support CCW. Look for these and other forms of appreciation to come your way, throughout November. Starting on Friday, December 1st we turn our focus to families who need assistance this holiday season. Our annual Toys for Tots Drive will begin and we appreciate your support. An unwrapped toy can be donated in the Toys for Tots box, located in the Lobby. I would also like to thank those who have already, so kindly, responded to the Employee Holiday Fund letter. These funds allow us, to show our Club’s staff, our appreciation for their hard work, dedication and efforts throughout the year. Also, I hope you have marked your calendars for our Member Holiday Celebration. Friday, December 22nd we plan to close out the holiday season with a bang! Live Music, DJ for Dancing, Food Stations Galore and Libations flowing. Since our last newsletter, we have also welcomed a new team member, that I’m very excited for everyone to meet. Shonda Carter, joins us as our new Director of Food and Beverage. Many have asked where Chef Ray Chen has gone? Chef Ray is now working alongside CCW’s former GM, Allen Self, as Executive Chef, at one of our newest Concert Golf Properties, Indian Spring, in Boynton Beach, Florida. As winter temperatures, begin to plunge, I hope that you take advantage of visiting Indian Spring and/or our other Concert Golf Properties. Finally, I would like to remind our membership, that the Clubhouse will be closed January 1st reopening Wednesday, January 25th. We look forward to seeing everyone at the “Welcome Back Member Reception” on Friday, January 26th. Wishing everyone a wonderful Holiday Season and a safe and Happy New Year. See you at the Club! Mary

MEMBERSHIP News

NEW MEMBERS Let’s give a warm welcome to our new members:

From the Director of Membership Hello All, This has been a whirlwind first year for me, but it has been awesome to see the growth at Woodmore. We have tried out a lot of new events and finished or started a few different projects around the club and course. We are primed to make the end of this year fantastic and roll that momentum into 2018. I know I have met just about every member throughout the year. If for some reason I have not, please feel free to come up and introduce yourself, and I will do the same. Our Ambassador Program has been rolling along. The participation we have had this year has been greater than ever before. Don’t forget, if you have a friend or colleague that has expressed interest in joining Woodmore please reach out to me and let me know. We will make sure to take care of them. We also have a few members that are fighting for the chance at complimentary dues for all of 2018. Not only that, but the winner also receives a five-day trip down to Amelia Island. Check out the flyers below for more information. I want there to be an open line of communication between myself and every member. If anyone ever has an idea about an event or opportunity please come talk to me and we can brainstorm. Thank you for making this a wonderful year. Cheers! It will be a busy month for us and we look forward to seeing all of you throughout it and even when we push through the cold days that are ahead of us. choice! It will be a busy month for us and we look forward to seeing all of you throughout it and even when we push through the cold days that are ahead of us. With our own events, we will also be hosting some great events such as the USGA Amateur 4-Ball Qualifying on Monday, October 16. With that being said, we will have a few other events that will affect normal play however, we will do whatever we can to secure you tee times at our nearby, reciprocal clubs at your convenience. As we close October and move into November, the temperatures will continue to fall and that also goes for the leaves that will rain down from the trees of Woodmore. With colder temperatures around the club, gear up so you can continue to take advantage of this beautiful piece of property. This will be the time when we start putting our covers on our carts as well as your own, personal covers so that you can enjoy a toasty round when you are not out swinging. When we get into the middle of November, we will also host our Annual Turkey Shoot Tournament for all of you diehard players! In addition, we will be running some tremendous sales around the holiday as well as a Black Friday Sale for you to take advantage of.

Greetings from the Grounds Department! As fall quickly approaches and Men’s Invitational complete. We are transitioning from our summer routine of maintaining the golf course and starting to perform many different important cultural practices before the growing season comes to an end.

extremely important to attack the plant before they are established. Therefore, we will be applying pre-emergent herbicides in the spring on all surfaces when the timing is correct. Throughout the year we will be spot spraying and pulling any weeds that break through.

This entire year thus far has been challenging for the grounds team. We have made improvements over the past couple of months to return back to the conditions that all members expect. Over the past couple of weeks and throughout the winter months we will be revaluating the entire grounds operation. The objective is to adjust programs and cultural practices to provide a better product for next year. There was a visit from Jason Adams from Blue Hills Country Club another Concert golf partners Superintendent and Regional Agronomist. Jason provided our team with great insight on various new programs and procedures that we planned implement going into next year.

We will be beginning our fall fairway aerification starting the week of October 30th. This year, we will be poking holes (not pulling plugs out of the ground) and dethatching the fairways over the course for a couple of weeks. This involves using a machine to rip the dead layer of turf out of the fairways and blowing the debris into the rough. This is a cleaner process than core aerification and we will only do one fairway at a time to affect playability as little as possible.

Just a few of the topics we evaluate were weed control, greens performance and overall turf health. There will be a couple different cultural practices performed starting this fall. We will be aggressive aerifying and incorporating more sand into the profile to provide a firmer surface and allowing water to drain. The increased sand will better protect the crown of the plant and provide a smoother playing surface. And we will aerify as deep as 10 inches to provide a channel for the water to drain. During the aggressive aerification in the spring we will be inter-seeding a new variety of bentgrass on the greens. This will be a process that could take a couple of years to convert fully. The new strains of bentgrass provide a better tolerance of the harsh summer months in the mid-Atlantic region. Also, we have built a program to directly attack goose grass and various other weeds before they mature and it affect conditions. It’s

8

We will continue to seed thin areas in our intermediate and primary roughs over the next month. There are a number of reasons that these areas are thin coming out of the summer: cart traffic, heat stress, insects and disease are just a few. Where we do have thin areas in the turf, we use it as an opportunity to seed some of the newest and most durable varieties of grass into them. Over time, doing this will help turn our weaker areas in to some of our strongest. We definitely saw a large improvement in our roughs this year as compared to last as a result of this seeding and will continue moving forward with this program. In addition, this fall we will be improving the overall sight lines of the course from tee to green. This will provide a cleaner more defined look leading into next year. Also, we will be starting to focus on what changes we can make to the course to present a better product for next year. Please come out and enjoy the golf course soon‌winter will be here before you know it!
