Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Welcome... To a new season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Hello and welcome to the Home of Football for the opening pre-season game of the 2018-19 campaign, with a warm greeting to our friends and neighbours from down the A61 - Martin Allen‘s Chesterfield FC.

The Spireites will be looking for a swift return to the Football League, having suffered relegation to the National League, and will be no doubt looking to their new manager to repeat his achievement with Barnet in 2014-15. Sheffield FC will also be looking to get off to a promising start under a new manager, as Gavin Smith takes the reins for the first time, having impressed as understudy to caretaker Chris Dolby at the end of last season. As you can see below, the lads have been preparing tough already - seemingly primed for a potential match up against the Colombian defence - and will be raring to go. Enjoy the game, and join us in the Coach and Horses afterwards for England versus Sweden, hopefully it will be a memorable afternoon.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

In S18 Today...

Chesterfield

ww.sheffieldfc.com

The exact origins of Chesterfield Football Club are a topic of some debate with evidence that a side existed as early as 1864 while the offi cial website ‘supports the widely held belief that the club was formed in 1866’. The side joined Division 2 of the Football League in 1899 and had some initial success, with a highest finish of 5th place in 1905, but subsequently struggled and failed to gain re-election to the league after finishing 19th of 20 sides in 1909. They competed in the Midland League for the next 6 seasons, winning the title at the first attempt, before World War I interrupted regular football. The club in its current incarnation dates from April 1919, when peace-time fixtures resumed with Chesterfield winning the Midland League for a second time in 1920 before becoming founder members of Division 3 North of the Football League in 1921.

Over the next 9 seasons Chesterfield finished in the top half of the table 7 times before winning the title in 1931 to gain promotion to Division 2. They were relegated just two years later but bounced back quickly, claiming the Division 3 North title once more in 1936, losing just 6 of 42 games. The Spireites also reached the 5th round of the FA Cup twice in the 1930s, only losing their 1937/38 tie against Tottenham after a replay. By 1939 they had risen to 6th place in Division 2 but the outbreak of World War II checked their progress just 2 games into the following season. When football resumed Chesterfield achieved their highest ever league finish, coming 4th in the second tier, just 8 points away from promotion to the top flight as they finished ahead of sides such as Newcastle, Tottenham and Sheffi eld Wednesday. Although they couldn’t quite match that success over the ensuing years they finished 6th in 1949 and reached the FA Cup 5th round once more in 1949/50, losing to Division One side Chelsea after a replay. In 1951 they were relegated back to Division 3 North which had become a national Division 3 by the time they were relegated a further step, to Division 4, ten years later. After that the side lived a yo-yo existence between the lower two divisions of the Football League structure. They were crowned Division 4 champions in 1970 and 1985, being relegated back to that level in 1983 and 1989. In 1995 they beat Bury at Wembley to gain promotion through the play-offs and nearly achieved an amazing return to the national stadium in 1997 as they reached the FA Cup Semi Final; it eventually took an unfairly disallowed Spireites’ goal and a replay before Premier League Middlesbrough finally ended their run. Relegation in 2000 was followed by promotion the following season, despite the club suffering a 9-point deduction for financial irregularities. After 6 seasons of struggle they were down once more in 2007 but went straight back up after winning the League 2 title four years later. This time they lasted just one year at the higher level, but they picked up a 4th title at Step 4 of the English football league structure in 2014, also reaching the final of the Football League Trophy, a competition they won 2 years earlier. In 2017 and 2018 they suffered consecutive relegations to fall out of the Football League and will compete this season in the National League, hoping for a quick return back from non-league football.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Chesterfield Football Club was founded in the 1860’s however the side folded in 1881 leaving its players to join other local sides, one of which, Chesterfield Spital, provide our first recorded opposition from the town. In December 1884 Daff Davy hit a hat-trick for Club who won 4-1 to reach the FA Cup third round, their best performance since being disqualified after refusing to play extra time against Nottingham Forest five seasons previously! Sadly Notts County ended the run the following month when hammering Sheffi eld 5-0 in Nottingham. A new incarnation of Chesterfield Football Club formed in 1884, going on to change their name to Chesterfield Town, with the first meeting a friendly in 1888, which Sheffi eld won 3-1.

History Corner

With Andy Dixon

The Derbyshire side turned professional in 1891 and it’s not surprising that the rest of the 19th century results, played in the Sheffi eld & District League, generally ended in their favour. This first of these was in September 1893 where Town won their home game 9-0! The season did see Club win the return at least, with a 2-0 success at home in January. In the next two seasons Town would win all 4 league meetings although clearly the games were not inspiring the public with the crowd for Chesterfield’s 2-0 home win in October 1895 attracting a less than impressive attendance of 12, which included 3 reporters! The next Chesterfield based opposition comes between the wars, with games in the record books against Chesterfield Corinthians and Chesterfield Ramblers, before games against Chesterfield ‘A’ in the Yorkshire League seasons of 1951 & 1952. In the first season both games ended with wins for the away sides, Club losing 1 -2 at home in January before ending the season by winning 4-1 at Saltergate, Roy Benson and Alan Smith both striking twice. The following season both sides had good campaigns in Division 2, finishing level on points: although it was Club who were promoted, taking 3rd place on goal difference, Chesterfield A had the best of their meetings as they won 3 -2 at home and left Sheffi eld with a share of the points despite 2 goals from Club’s Geoff Robinson. The sides wouldn’t meet again due to not being at the same level before Chesterfield withdrew their ‘A’ side in 1955. The last competitive game, which we are aware of, against any side from the town, is a 3-0 win away to Chesterfield Tube Works in the Preliminary Round of the Amateur Cup in September 1967. Goals on that day came from Michael Goodwin, Ernest Bidwell & Glyn Morris while keeper Chris Cooke ensured no slip-ups at the other end. Obviously with the professional status of Chesterfield FC games have not been regular occurrences but the move to Dronfield has brought a close proximity between the clubs and there have been several pre -season friendlies in recent seasons. August 2008 saw a Spireites side visit the Coach & Horses with a crowd just short of 700 witnessing a 1-1 draw against Chris Dolby’s side. Mick Goddard opened the scoring for Sheffi eld on 35 minutes but sadly the lead lasted a matter of minutes as Jordan Bowery equalised quickly, striking home from the edge of the area. The 17 year old Chesterfield keeper that day was Dan Whatsize who would go on to make 81 Sheffi eld appearances, including an unbroken run of 76, from 2010 to 2012! Also in the Spireites’ side was another future Clubbie in the shape of young winger Ben Algar. Ahead of the 2009/10 season Sheffi eld once more took the lead against their neighbours when a Matt Roney free kick was deflected past keeper Tommy Lee just past the quarter hour mark. A strong Spireites side hit back well though as Martin Gritton and Lloyd Kerry put them 2-1 up at half-time. After the break the pace dropped somewhat with chances few and far between, Scott Boden made it 3-1 to the visitors midway through the half, with neither side producing much else that threatened either keeper. In 2010 Sheffi eld got the better of a young Chesterfield XI, which included another player who would later wear Club colours, with Jack Waddle appearing as a second half substitute. Ash Burbeary was in the thick of the action early as he hit home a 20 yarder to give Sheffi eld the lead, missed a penalty and then put Club 2-0 up with another fine long range effort. Following a strange incident involving the FIRST MEETING – 06/12/1884 Chesterfield manager John Sheridan threatening to abandon the game following a coming together between Andrew FA Cup Round Two Gascoigne and one of his players, Greg Wright added another SHEFFIELD FC 4 for Club to see them 3-0 up at the break. Chesterfield Daff Davy (3), Edwin Barber fought back with 2 goals from Jordan Bowery but in the final minutes Brian Cusworth headed home to wrap up to the 4-2 Chesterfield Spital 1 win. William Booker A pre-season meeting took place in 2014 when Sheffi eld ran out as comfortable 2-0 winners over a young but hardworking Chesterfield side. A goal in each half from Jahmal Smith saw Club, including several trialists, home to victory. Last season a strong visiting side won 4-1 here when Ian Evatt, Kristian Dennis and Dion Donahue put Chesterfield in control; Club did pull a goal back but Ricky German, later to appear briefly in Sheffi eld colours, completed the scoring for a convincing victory.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Under New Management

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sheffield FC are keeping faith with the management team that ended the 201718 Evo-Stik League season on a high. Former player and assistant manager Gavin Smith was named as manager on Monday morning after helping caretaker boss Chris Dolby secure the club's status in the Northern Premier League over the final months of the Evo-Stik League South campaign following the departure of Mark Shaw in March. Smith enjoyed an illustrious playing career at Sheffield Wednesday, Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End and went on to ply his trade in Non-League at Gainsborough Trinity, Bradford Park Avenue, Worksop Town and Sheffield FC

before moving into coaching and management. After previously working alongside former manager Dolby as his number two between 2008 and 2010, Smith will be assisted by Russ Eagle who will also take charge of the club's U18s Sunday squad and talented midweek U19s. Former player and fans' favourite Kirk Jackson has also been recruited as first team coach. According to a statement from Sheffield FC secretary Bill Towning confirming the appointments, Jackson (right) is "relishing the challenge of keeping the team fit and raring to go" ahead of the 2018-19 EVO-STIK League East campaign. The trio will be supported by Dolby who has taken on the role of director of football and will also continue to head the successful Sheffield FC Foundation while working with local schools and colleges to promote the world's oldest football club. John Williams, already an advisor to Club for several years in his capacity as lead coach of Sheffield FC's Women’s Super League side and men’s academy squads, was also unveiled as the new head of player development at The Home of Football.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

New Signings

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sheffield FC First Team Manager Gavin Smith has been busy making additions to his squad ahead of the new season and we are very pleased to have secured the signatures of Anthony Mackie (right of picture) and Sam Wright (left) pictured being welcomed to Sheffield FC by the gaffer. Wide midfielder Anthony was at Barnsley Academy and gained plenty of experience at Evo-Stik league football in spells at Goole AFC and latterly at Ossett Town. Capable of scoring goals (he’s scored at least a couple against us!), Anthony can play a number of positions and has resisted other offers to make the move to The Club.

Central midfielder Sam also joins us from Ossett Town with good reviews from our scouts and we are looking forward to seeing him in the thick of the action next season breaking up opposition play and setting up chances for our own strikers. On these signings Gavin commented "Ants and Sam have got plenty of Evo-Stik experience and I feel they will add quality and strength to the current squad, I would like to welcome both players to The Club" Gavin then made another two exciting additions to the squad for the new season. Former Rotherham United, Boston United and Matlock Town striker Marc Newsham has agreed to join The Club 13 years after making appearances on loan whilst on professional terms with the Millers. Marc scored 110 goals in 209 appearances for Boston United before joining Evo-Stik Premier Division Matlock Town two seasons ago. Gavin Smith said that he was delighted that Marc had agreed to join us: “Marc is a striker with a real pedigree and a proven scorer. I’m sure he is going to be a real fans favourite here at Dronfield” Hugo Warhurst has also agreed to put pen to paper on a deal with Sheffield FC. The young goal-keeper impressed in his recent short spell on loan from Sheffield United having very quickly got used to the demands of Evo-Stik league football in another successful loan spell at Frickley Athletic. Gavin Smith said he was very pleased to have signed Hugo: “He’s got what it takes to go a lot further in the game and for a young lad has the confidence and presence that any team at this level needs in a ‘keeper.”

Walking Football

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sheffield FC's representatives starred in the first ever walking football international, as England played Italy at Brighton's Amex Stadium on Sunday 13 May for the Just International Cup.

The England Over 60's team won 3-0 with Sheffield FC's Roy Gladwell, Paul Leary and Peter Stacey in the squad. A superb hat trick from man-of- the match Sheffield FC captain Peter Stacey (pictured right) saw a comfortable win for the over 60’s despite an Italian missed penalty. Further international games are planned for later in the year in preparation for the European Championships in 2019 and the inaugural World Cup in 2020 The Sheffield FC over 60's walking football team continued their extended run of success by winning the prestigious Leidschendam International Walking Football Tournament in Holland on Friday 15 June. The sixteen team tournament featured teams from across Europe and Sheffield FC triumphed in the final with a fine 3-1 victory over hosts SEV Leidschendam. This comes after Sheffield Walking Football Club beat Matlock WFC 2-1 in the final of the Midlands Region of the TRA National Charity Cup in May to progress into the national finals. The team return to domestic action this week with the second round of the WFA National Cup where the opposition is Wakefield, Further rounds then lead to the tournament finals in late September. In a separate competition, the National Charity Cup, Sheffield are already through to the finals which are to be played in Romford, Essex over the August Bank Holiday weekend, and Sheffield WFC will be one of the tournament favourites.

Leipzig th Prepares

125 Celebration

ww.sheffieldfc.com

In two weeks the oldest football club in Saxony plays against the oldest football club in the world. For 125 years, the ball has been rolling at the SV Lipsia 93 Eutritzsch - a good reason to lure Sheffield FC, founded in 1857, to Leipzig for the anniversary. The traditional duel rises on July 21, 2018 in the sports complex ThaerstraĂ&#x;e. Young, fresh, dynamic and yet very old: The SV Lipsia 93 Eutritzsch was launched on February 1, 1893 and was one of the founding members of the German Football Association. In 2017, the football club from the north of Leipzig made the ascent to the Sachsenliga (Level Six), but at the end of the season had to drop back a gear in the national class.

Robert Fuchs, one of the team leaders of Lipsia, took it sportily: "It was a great adventure, but it will not come back so quickly." On the occasion of their 125th anniversary, the Eutritzscher are all the more looking forward to the big highlight, which will be held on July 21st against the English club Sheffi eld FC. The idea was there for some time, a duel against those founded on October 24, 1857 - and thus the oldest football club in the world. For two years, the Lipsia managers have been working hard to realize their dream. With the help of crowdfunding almost â‚Ź9,000 came together, which should cover especially the travel expenses of the English guests. So far, about 600 tickets for the game have gone over the counter, with 1,500 guests is expected on the big day. The Leipzig football club has already been diligently advertised all the way in distant Russia. Julius Nietzsche, sporting director of the Lipsia gentlemen, had personally set out to carry the message into the world at the World Cup. Well placed is half won: his fence flag struck millions of spectators during the match between England and Belgium (0: 1) in the Kaliningrad Stadium: Lipsia Eutritzsch.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

EARLY FOOTBALL Versions of football evolved in many early civilisations, example of these can be found in ancient China, Greece and Rome. In England the original games were played between villages in fields and streets. This ‘Mob Football’ involved hundreds of players and was little more than prolonged and violent street battles. During the 19th century a more refined version of the game grew in popularity within the public schools and universities, each playing to their own sets of rules. THE BIRTH OF SHEFFIELD FOOT BALL CLUB. During the 1850s the enthusiasm and influence of ex-public school and university students spread the popularity of the game around Sheffield. In the summer of 1857 William Prest and Nathaniel Creswick agreed that the game would be a splendid candidate for organised sport during the winter months. The pair wrote to the Public Schools for information, regarding their varying rules, with the aim of drawing up a set of laws embodying the best points from each. On October 24th, 1857, the world’s first football club was born in a greenhouse, at the home of Harry Chambers. Chambers went on to become one of the club’s greatest players, and Secretary, in a career that spanned over 40 years. Among the first rules drawn up were laws asserting that “no hacking or tripping up is fair under any circumstances”, “no player may be held or pulled over” and “it is not lawful to take the ball off the ground [using hands]”. Upon the formation of the Football Association in 1863, Sheffield Club’s insistence on these laws began the evolution into the game we recognise globally today. Heading, solid crossbars, corner kicks, free-kicks for fouls, throw-ins, a half-time change of ends and floodlit matches can all be traced to the innovators of Sheffield F.C.! EARLY YEARS Initially early matches, such as Married men v Unmarried, had to be played between Club members. Records also show games against local army sides. Following victory over the 58 th Army Regiment in 1860 a local report stated that, “most of the officers were adepts at the game, having, in their younger days, played in the public school matches, and the victory of the civilians was quite unexpected.” Following the birth of Hallam F.C., the world’s first inter-club game took place on Boxing Day in 1860. The match “was conducted with good temper and in a friendly spirit”, concluding in a 2-0 win for Sheffield. For several years all matches were played locally, against a rising number of new sides, before the first ‘out of town’ match was played in Nottinghamshire in 1865. In 1866 the first game limited to a length of 90 minutes was played at Battersea Park against London. The FA Cup was founded in 1871 and in its third season Sheffield became the first northern side to take part. They succeeded in reaching the quarter finals in this and two further seasons also, 1876 and 1878. 1872 saw the first international game, between England and Scotland in Glasgow, with Sheffield’s Charles Clegg playing for the England side. Clegg would later go on to be Chairman, and President, of the FA and receive a knighthood for his services to the game.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

From the 1880s onwards the rise of professionalism and Sheffield Club’s firm insistence of retaining their amateur status saw them overtaken and overshadowed by other sides in the area. During these years the very survival of the club owed much to the leadership of former players Harry Chambers and Harry Broughton Willey. After the death of the latter in 1933 the minutes stated that “Mr H.B. Willey for years had carried the Club on his back, administratively and financially, making up a yearly deficit from his own pocket.” It wasn’t all doom and gloom though! In fact Sheffield enjoyed possibly their greatest hour in 1904 when they won the Amateur Cup, beating Ealing 3-1 at Valley Parade, Bradford. YORKSHIRE LEAGUE 1949 brought admission to the Yorkshire League and a resurgence, which saw the side promoted to Division One in their third season and reach the League Cup final in 1953. In 1957 they celebrated their Centenary year and reached their first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup final in 1962. The 1950s also saw the emergence of the Club’s greatest legend with forward Geoff Robinson (above) scoring 232 goals over 216 appearances. After a period of yo-yoing between divisions the 1977 side were crowned Division Two Champions and reached that season’s FA Vase final at Wembley. They established themselves as a top division side in the Yorkshire League, lifting the League Cup in 1978, before joining the newly founded Northern Counties East League in 1982. NORTHERN COUNTIES LEAGUE The Division One title was won in both 1989 and 1991 and a first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup win came in 1994. In 2001 the club acquired a permanent ground, for the first time, when moving to its current home. After the turn of the century the side began to consistently challenge for promotion, winning both the League Cup and Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup on two occasions. The 2006/07 season ended with a 2 nd place finish and promotion to the Northern Premier League. NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE The side made an instant impact in reaching the 2008 play-off final, narrowly losing only on penalties. That first season also saw games against Inter Milan and Ajax at Bramall Lane, as part of the 150th birthday celebrations, and a few years later a win at Hallam’s Sandygate ground to mark the anniversary of the first inter-club match. Sheffield have twice more been involved in the season ending play-offs and lifted the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup on two further occasions also. Manager Mark Hume took over in May 2017, and hopes are high for 2017/18 of making good progress from last season’s disappointing 15th place finish. In addition the SFC Ladies’ team have now risen from the lowest rung of women’s football, to play alongside the elite of the game in the FA Women’s Super League. Sheffield Futsal Club were again amongst the country’s leading sides, the Under 19s won the League Cup and the Over 35s won the treble, whilst the newly formed Sheffield FC Veterans (with Jim Fern scoring, right) went to the San Siro Stadium in Milan to win the ACLI Invitational Trophy as the club continues to go from strength to strength in the grass roots game in its 160th season.
