Welcome... To The Home of Football

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Hello, good evening and welcome to the Home of Football for the World’s Oldest Derby 2018 edition, and a special greeting to our oldest friends, rivals and little brother the legendary Hallam FC

Once again we are challenging for the Alan Cooper Memorial Barstool Trophy, with Sheffield hoping to “three-peat”, having snatched it on penalties back in 2016, and winning 4-1 in a tougher game than the score suggests last July. All those who attended on Saturday saw a brave enough display from Club against a team that must rank among the favourites for the Vanarama National League title, with the 5-1 scoreline not really doing the home side justice, in what were very hot and challenging conditions. So, whether you are a Clubbie and Countryman or someone on the fence, we hope you all enjoy tonight’s game, and hope that we can all stay friends for another year… best mates for 158 years and counting!

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Right, let’s get the facts that surely everyone here knows out of the way first – Hallam FC are the second oldest football club in the world with their first game against Sheffield FC, on Boxing Day 1860, being the oldest inter-club fixture and their Sandygate home the oldest football ground! Hallam Cricket Club was formed in 1804 and flourished for over half a century before John Shaw led the formation of an associated football club. Shaw would later play for Sheffield Club in the first ever inter-city club game, against Nottinghamshire in 1865, and also in the first match against London the following year. The latter was played under the ‘London Rules’ and he also captained the Sheffield FA against their London counterparts for the first interassociation game in 1871. The Sheffield FA had been formed to organise a cup competition in 1867, with the resultant Youdan Cup seeing Hallam write their name into the history books once more as the winners of the world’s first cup competition. The rise of the professional game saw Hallam slip from the limelight somewhat but they retained their popularity locally and reached the Sheffi eld & Hallamshire Senior Cup Final in 1904. Over 2,000 witnessed an Amateur Cup win at Sandygate in 1925 and they lifted their first Senior Cup in 1951 before they joined the Yorkshire League in 1952. After five Division 2 seasons they were promoted to the top flight where, with the exception of one relegation which saw them win Division 2 to bounce straight back, they remained until the formation of the NCEL in 1982 with a highest finish of 3rd in 1976. That Division 2 title represented their best ever league campaign as they lost just 2 of 36 games, scoring 132 goals in the process. During the Yorkshire League years they also won a further three Senior Cup trophies, including a 1-0 replay victory over Sheffi eld in 1962: the oldest club rivalry was only settled in “the last minute of extra time when Hanwell raced upfield and crashed the ball in. ” Hallam reached the Premier Division of the NCEL in 1987 but could only stay there for three seasons before relegation back to Division 1. Four seasons later they were back however and would remain in the Premier until 2010, also winning the League Cup in 2004. This period also saw the longest run of regular league derbies between the world’s two oldest sides; over the next thirteen seasons Hallam generally held the upper hand as they won 13 of the 26 games with another 6 drawn. In 2008 they finished 6th in the NCEL Premier but then saw their league positions begin to decline each season. They reached a 6th Sheffi eld & Hallamshire Senior Cup Final in 2010, which was their 150th anniversary season, fittingly meeting Sheffield in the final at Hillsborough where they went down 2-4 in an exciting game. Unfortunately the anniversary Boxing Day game between the sides was cancelled due to snow; the sides eventually met in May when a good crowd watched Club lift the Alan Cooper Memorial Trophy with two late goals. By the time of that game Hallam had already been relegated to Division 1 of the NCEL, where they currently reside. In 2014 they finished 20th in Division 1 but have improved well from that low to reach the play-offs in 2 of the last 3 years, only narrowly missing out on making it 3 out of 3 last season.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Of all the histories against clubs that I have to write this season this is certainly the one that provides the most material to work with! In total we have a record of nearly 100 results between the sides but with several more games having evaded our investigations so far I suspect they have played well over 100 fixtures against each other. The summary of what we do know makes happy reading for today ’s visitors who hold the upper hand with 12 more wins in the records we have. Of course it famously began back on Boxing Day in 1860, on the day that inter -club football was born, as the two oldest clubs played at Sandygate, the oldest football ground in the world! The game was played, until darkness fell, with 16 players on each side; Sheffield emerging as 2-0 winners with a side containing Club founders Nathaniel Creswick and William Prest. The same season saw two further games with Sheffield repeating their 2-0 success in February snow as David Sellars became the first known goal -scorer for the club. A big crowd the following month saw a first Hallam success, at Sheffield ’s East Bank Road ground, the visiting side feeling the benefit of having 18 players to Club’s 15 to claim a 3-0 victory. Hallam won the next two fixtures, the latter on rouges after no goals had been scored in the game, although Sheffield maintained their 100% Sandygate record, also winning on rouges, in 1862. In December 1862, the clubs contested the first football match played at Bramall Lane, with neither side able to register a goal or rouge after three hours’ hard play! Up to World War I we know of only three more games, a friendly win for Club in 1893 with victory for Hallam and a drawn game, both in the Sheffield Association League in 1905. There were still connections between the sides; Hallam founder John Charles Shaw, and other players who had faced Sheffield in those early games, such as Thomas & Frederick Vickers, playing for Club regularly. Shaw in fact played in Club colours for over 20 years and was in the Sheffield side which played the first out of city games against both Nottinghamshire and London. Between the wars was a trio of wins for Hallam, in 1923 & ’24, before our first record of a Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup tie where, despite Henry Moseley netting for Club, goals from Thompson and a pair from Wolstenholme saw the Countrymen continue their run of successes. An Amateur Cup tie, and at last a game in Sheffield’s favour with a 4-2 Sandygate win, took place in November 1949 before a 5 year break after which the sides found themselves together in Division 2 of the Yorkshire League. In the 1954/55 season the sides drew one game whilst Sheffield twice won by a 3-1 score-line at Sandygate, including early FA Cup progress, and made their way to a promotion which meant a small gap before the clubs would meet again. Club then had the edge in terms of results and positions for three seasons although Hallam enjoyed the cup occasions, claiming big 5-2 wins in both the FA & Amateur Cups during the period. 1959/60 ended in relegation for Hallam but it was to see a turnaround in fortunes as they swapped places and Sheffield would spend all but one of the next 16 seasons in a lower division. 1962 did see a first Sheffi eld & Hallamshire Cup Final meeting with Division 1 side Hallam taking the lead, through Morgan, but a late goal from Jeff Fowler forced a replay for the Division 2 team two days later. The rematch once again went to extra time before Hanwell crashed the ball in to clinch the second of Hallam ’s four wins in the competition. Hallam won an Amateur Cup game in October 1966 and Sheffield were two levels below, in Division 3, when they lost 0-2 at home in a 1973 League Cup tie but a pair of promotions in the next three seasons finally saw the sides back in the same league. From 1977 to 1982 we know of 4 Yorkshire League wins for Hallam and 5 draws between the sides; in addition Hallam won through a Senior Cup tie in 1982, after a replay, with the only challenge to their dominance being a League Cup success for Club in November 1979. The sides were evenly matched in the table though with no more than 3 league places between them before the creation of the Northern Counties East League in 1983, when both sides joined the NCEL Division 1 South. They would be together in the NCEL for 25 seasons, spending 19 at the same level, and although Sheffield had a slight upper hand in terms of league positions Hallam had the better of their meetings on the pitch. Two wins apiece, and a pair of drawn games, marked the early years before Sheffield repeated their victory in that famous first game with goals from Rob Spotswood and John Sheppard sealing a 2 -1 win on the 125th anniversary in 1985, also winning a pre-season friendly the following year. The end of the 1980s and start of the 90s ended with both sides being ‘relegated’ from the Premier Division in a re-shaped league and responding by finishing 1st and 2nd the following year as they battled to climb back. Club dropped just 8 points that season, 3 of them in a 0-2 loss at Sandygate, to take the one available promotion spot – rubbing salt into the wounds of their fiercest rivals with a 6-3 win in a Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup game in December. It took them 3 more seasons but Hallam got back to the top flight and began a 13 season NCEL Premier battle.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Initially both sides struggled, with Hallam’s 7th place finish the best effort in the next 4 seasons, during which during which they won six of the eight matches between the clubs. Sheffield ’s 2-0 win at home in September ’97 was answered with a 1-5 thumping at Sandygate in December! While Sheffield generally improved over the next four seasons Hallam were pushing for promotion and their dominance in the oldest derby continued with four more wins and just one defeat in the period. This marked a turning point in the fates however as Club would improve season on season before their eventual promotion in 2007, whilst the Countrymen struggled in the bottom half of the table. Still, the games between the two remained evenly matched as the relative league positions bore little relevance when it came to derby day with see-saw results. Club won a President’s Cup tie in February 2003 by a 5-1 score, with a Jon Pickess hat-trick, before Hallam gained revenge less than two months later, winning 4-0 at Sandygate. Both sides won their home games the following year, Sheffi eld also suffering a League Cup exit in between, before a goal-filled pair of games in 2005 when Club won 5-1 and 5-3 with Rob Ward helping himself to 4 goals in those. On the 145th anniversary of the oldest derby Hallam tore up the form book with a Tom Franklin goal settling the game in their favour but Sheffield were a side on the rise and won the return comfortably. Finally Sheffield were to seal promotion to the NPL in 2007 but not before another set of mixed results with a Vill Powell goal rescuing a draw at the Coach & Horses, Hallam dumping Club out of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup and Powell on the score-sheet again in a 3-1 win in the Boxing Day fixture. Since the separation in leagues the sides have met several times in cup and friendly games, with Hallam of course now sitting two levels below in the pyramid. Club prepared for their debut NPL season with a friendly away to Hallam, which was settled in the hosts’ favour on penalties. A 2008 pre-season friendly ended with a big 5-1 victory for Sheffield, goals from Steve Woolley, Vill Powell, Mick Goddard(2) and Asa Ingall). The sides met for the second time in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup Final in 2010 and Club gained revenge for that 1962 defeat in an exciting game which they won 4-2 at Hillsborough to lift the trophy for the 5th occasion. At the start of the following season Hallam picked up a 1-0 win at the Coach & Horses in the Heritage Football Tournament, which was eventually won by Cray Wanderers in a penalty shootout against Club. Sheffield won the 150th anniversary celebration of the world’s oldest derby match in 2011, fighting back for a 2-1 victory, and also the next meeting, which came in October 2012 in the first round of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup, with a narrow 3-2 success following a very even battle. Club triumphed 4-2 in July 2013 friendly with goals from Ben Algar, Andrew Gascoigne, Mark Fereday and ex Hallam forward Aaron Moxam for Club whilst Ben Pond and Ryan Ruddiforth, another to play for both of the world’s oldest two sides, replied for the visitors. There was also a February meeting later in the season, with both sides looking to maintain fitness during a spell of abandoned games due to the bad weather, on the 3G pitch at Hillsborough College: this time Hallam reversed the 4-2 score-line in their favour for a comfortable win. The Countrymen extended their run to three wins after winning in both of the next pre -season clashes. Here in 2014 Liam Osbourne put them 2-0 ahead and although Sheffield were given some hope late on, thanks to an 84th minute own goal, Grant Allott made it 3-1 to the visitors. The following season the World’s Oldest Derby returned to the World’s Oldest Football Ground, Sandygate. Both sides showed bright early signs, man of the match Jacques Joblon impressing for Sheffield, but couldn’t make a breakthrough. Former Clubbie Jack Hargreaves eventually put Hallam ahead on 70 minutes but John Lufudu equalised shortly after. FIRST MEETING – 26/12/1860 The tie was finally settled 6-5 on penalties and the First Ever Inter-Club Game game ended with a win for the hosts. Here last season it also took penalties before Sheffield could take the Hallam and Stumperlowe 0 Alan Cooper Barstool Trophy away from Hallam. After SHEFFIELD FC 2 the game had ended 1-1, Ash Longstaff cancelling out a Tom Roebuck strike, a series of perfectly taken LAST MEETING – 30/07/2017 penalties saw the shootout reach 6-6 before a save Alan Cooper Trophy from Chris Butt settled the tie in Club’s favour. Hopefully one day soon we will see the return of regular fixtures between the sides but in the meantime you can be assured that whenever the two oldest clubs take to the pitch we are always treated to highly competitive games. The rivalry, anticipation and excitement of the clashes remains as high as it did when the very first match took place over 156 years ago.

Club in Action

Sheffield FC 1 Chesterfield 5 Pre-Season Friendly Saturday 07/07/18 Attendance: 418 Sheffield FC kicked off their pre-season campaign with a difficult match against a very strong Chesterfield side, with Martin Allen's Spireites running out expectedly comfortable winners, coasting to a 5-1 victory. On a baking hot day in Dronfield, Sheffield started the game as worthy opponents against the Vanarama National League side, and more than held their own in the first 15 minutes.

Eventually Chesterfield broke the deadlock, as on 17 minutes Zavon Hines chipped the ball into the middle, with Charlie Carter lashing home from the middle of the box. The hosts went close a couple of times, with Danny Deakin just firing wide, whilst Matt Roney forced a save from Shwan Jalal, which the Blue returned with interest - breaking up field to force a fine save from Jamie Ingham in the Sheffield goal, with Curtis Weston firing home the rebound. It took a matter of moments into the second half for the visitors to extend their lead, with Gozie Ugwu tapping in from close range to make it 3-0. Chesterfield could have increased their lead if not for some cute defending from the home side, as the referee ruled out two goals due to offside flags, with Club holding a solid line. A fourth came on 76 minutes as Luke Rawson burst down the left wing, sending in the perfect ball, with Joe Rowley whipping home without Sheffield FC: Ingham, Mackie, Roney, breaking stride from just inside the area. Five minutes later the impressive youngster Rawson caused more mayhem down the left, squaring the ball across the face of the goal, giving Rowley the easiest of tap-ins from close range. Sheffield grabbed a consolation goal five minutes from time, as Waide Fairhurst took advantage of a high offside line and a mix-up in the Chesterfield midfield, to race clear and slot the ball under Joe Anyon.

FA Draws

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sheffield FC and Hallam FC have learned their first competitive fixtures this week, with the draw of the early rounds of the FA Cup, FA Trophy and FA Vase, and all will see Gavin Smith's and Scott Bates’ boys face very tough opposition from across the Pennines. In the FA Cup, Hallam have a difficult home Extra Preliminary Round tie when they host North West Counties League - and Evo-Stik West Division newcomers - Runcorn Linnets at Sandygate on Saturday 11 August. Club join the draw at the Preliminary Round stage and have been drawn away to Hyde United - recently promoted to the Evo-Stik Premier after finishing third in the Evo-Stik North - with the fixture scheduled for Saturday 25 August at Ewen Fields.

Should Hallam be successful against Runcorn, it is more local opposition in the pipeline, with a tie at home to either Maltby Main or Athersley Recreation on the horizon. In the FA Vase the Countrymen are catapulted directly into the Second Qualifying Round, where they will face an awkward away trip to either Congleton Town or Bootle, with the tie scheduled for Saturday 15 September. The FA Trophy won't be played until Saturday 29 September, however the draw has been made and has thrown out a Sheffield FC home fixture against Prescot Cables - who finished two places behind Hyde and missed out on promotion via the play-offs - with the winners given a home tie on Saturday 13 October against Kendal Town. Last, and most certainly not least, in the FA Youth Cup, Russ Eagle’s Sheffield FC youngsters have been handed a fairly local tie, with a First Qualifying Round match-up away to AFC Emley at the Welfare ground week commencing Monday 17 September.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Around the Club

Disability Squad

ww.sheffieldfc.com

The Adult Disability have finished the season in 3rd place in the Championship League of the South Yorkshire Ability Counts League. In our debut season in the adult league, this is considered a great success, missing out on second place and promotion. It comes alongside the achievements of getting through to the last 4 of the Regional Finals of the FA People’s Cup earlier this year. We look forward to next season with the experience of playing against a different level of opposition in our debut season. The adult team has been growing over the year and we will have 2 teams entered into the South Yorkshire Ability Counts League next season.

We now move onto numerous tournaments in the summer and recently attended the Reds vs Blues charity day at Hillsborough Arena in support of the Royal British Legion and Hillsborough cadets. A number of games were played throughout the day with a number of celebrities in attendance. Our younger Adult Team members played against the Hillsborough cadets, coming out 9-2 winners. An enjoyable experience and game time. The club are grateful for the opportunity to show our support for such worthy causes. All at Sheffield FC are really proud of the achievements from all the guys, all of whom have contributed to the successes of this first season.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Around The Club

Three Lions Brownie

ww.sheffieldfc.com

With all the feelgood vibe and the buzz of the largely unexpected success of the England international side that has taken the World Cup - and the nation - by storm, it would be remiss to let this World’s Oldest Derby issue of the Red and Black Review pass without a mention to a young man who pulled on the red and black shirt of Sheffield FC AND the blue and white of Hallam FC last season - young Alex Brown, The 19-year-old defender at the World's First Football Club made his debut coming on for the Three Lions against Ireland in Dublin last month and was congratulated by Paul Fairclough after forcing his way into the England C manager's thinking at the Whitehall Stadium.

Already on standby for the match against the FAI's semi-professional side in an U23s squad dominated by National League players, the teenager was reported to have given a "good account of himself" as a 55th minute substitute despite the hosts running out 4-2 winners. His highlights included forcing a good save from the Irish keeper and a Club spokesman said: "Congratulations Brownie from all at the world's first and here's to many more appearances in the Three Lions shirt! "Our officials were delighted to receive very positive comments from FA reps about Alex afterwards and we're very proud of him and his achievement representing both Sheffield FC and the Northern Premier League."

A student at Sheffield Hallam University studying sport and exercise science, the teenager and former Hallam starlet signed on at The Home of Football in October 2017. He told the club's website: "It was a great experience for me to test myself against players in higher divisions with more experience. It was a huge honour to make my England C debut and to represent my country, both for me personally and the club for getting the recognition it deserves. I can only thank everyone at Sheffi eld FC for giving me the opportunity and to play games to achieve this."

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

EARLY FOOTBALL Versions of football evolved in many early civilisations, example of these can be found in ancient China, Greece and Rome. In England the original games were played between villages in fields and streets. This ‘Mob Football’ involved hundreds of players and was little more than prolonged and violent street battles. During the 19th century a more refined version of the game grew in popularity within the public schools and universities, each playing to their own sets of rules. THE BIRTH OF SHEFFIELD FOOT BALL CLUB. During the 1850s the enthusiasm and influence of ex-public school and university students spread the popularity of the game around Sheffield. In the summer of 1857 William Prest and Nathaniel Creswick agreed that the game would be a splendid candidate for organised sport during the winter months. The pair wrote to the Public Schools for information, regarding their varying rules, with the aim of drawing up a set of laws embodying the best points from each. On October 24th, 1857, the world’s first football club was born in a greenhouse, at the home of Harry Chambers. Chambers went on to become one of the club’s greatest players, and Secretary, in a career that spanned over 40 years. Among the first rules drawn up were laws asserting that “no hacking or tripping up is fair under any circumstances”, “no player may be held or pulled over” and “it is not lawful to take the ball off the ground [using hands]”. Upon the formation of the Football Association in 1863, Sheffield Club’s insistence on these laws began the evolution into the game we recognise globally today. Heading, solid crossbars, corner kicks, free-kicks for fouls, throw-ins, a half-time change of ends and floodlit matches can all be traced to the innovators of Sheffield F.C.! EARLY YEARS Initially early matches, such as Married men v Unmarried, had to be played between Club members. Records also show games against local army sides. Following victory over the 58 th Army Regiment in 1860 a local report stated that, “most of the officers were adepts at the game, having, in their younger days, played in the public school matches, and the victory of the civilians was quite unexpected.” Following the birth of Hallam F.C., the world’s first inter-club game took place on Boxing Day in 1860. The match “was conducted with good temper and in a friendly spirit”, concluding in a 2-0 win for Sheffield. For several years all matches were played locally, against a rising number of new sides, before the first ‘out of town’ match was played in Nottinghamshire in 1865. In 1866 the first game limited to a length of 90 minutes was played at Battersea Park against London. The FA Cup was founded in 1871 and in its third season Sheffield became the first northern side to take part. They succeeded in reaching the quarter finals in this and two further seasons also, 1876 and 1878. 1872 saw the first international game, between England and Scotland in Glasgow, with Sheffield’s Charles Clegg playing for the England side. Clegg would later go on to be Chairman, and President, of the FA and receive a knighthood for his services to the game.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

From the 1880s onwards the rise of professionalism and Sheffield Club’s firm insistence of retaining their amateur status saw them overtaken and overshadowed by other sides in the area. During these years the very survival of the club owed much to the leadership of former players Harry Chambers and Harry Broughton Willey. After the death of the latter in 1933 the minutes stated that “Mr H.B. Willey for years had carried the Club on his back, administratively and financially, making up a yearly deficit from his own pocket.” It wasn’t all doom and gloom though! In fact Sheffield enjoyed possibly their greatest hour in 1904 when they won the Amateur Cup, beating Ealing 3-1 at Valley Parade, Bradford. YORKSHIRE LEAGUE 1949 brought admission to the Yorkshire League and a resurgence, which saw the side promoted to Division One in their third season and reach the League Cup final in 1953. In 1957 they celebrated their Centenary year and reached their first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup final in 1962. The 1950s also saw the emergence of the Club’s greatest legend with forward Geoff Robinson (above) scoring 232 goals over 216 appearances. After a period of yo-yoing between divisions the 1977 side were crowned Division Two Champions and reached that season’s FA Vase final at Wembley. They established themselves as a top division side in the Yorkshire League, lifting the League Cup in 1978, before joining the newly founded Northern Counties East League in 1982. NORTHERN COUNTIES LEAGUE The Division One title was won in both 1989 and 1991 and a first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup win came in 1994. In 2001 the club acquired a permanent ground, for the first time, when moving to its current home. After the turn of the century the side began to consistently challenge for promotion, winning both the League Cup and Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup on two occasions. The 2006/07 season ended with a 2 nd place finish and promotion to the Northern Premier League. NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE The side made an instant impact in reaching the 2008 play-off final, narrowly losing only on penalties. That first season also saw games against Inter Milan and Ajax at Bramall Lane, as part of the 150th birthday celebrations, and a few years later a win at Hallam’s Sandygate ground to mark the anniversary of the first inter-club match. Sheffield have twice more been involved in the season ending play-offs and lifted the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup on two further occasions also. Manager Mark Hume took over in May 2017, and hopes are high for 2017/18 of making good progress from last season’s disappointing 15th place finish. In addition the SFC Ladies’ team have now risen from the lowest rung of women’s football, to play alongside the elite of the game in the FA Women’s Super League. Sheffield Futsal Club were again amongst the country’s leading sides, the Under 19s won the League Cup and the Over 35s won the treble, whilst the newly formed Sheffield FC Veterans (with Jim Fern scoring, right) went to the San Siro Stadium in Milan to win the ACLI Invitational Trophy as the club continues to go from strength to strength in the grass roots game in its 160th season.
