Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Welcome... To The Home of Football

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Hello, good evening and welcome to the Home of Football for the next fixture in the 2018/19 pre-season campaign, and especially to our visitors from Rotherham United.

It’s hard to believe that it is four days short of a decade since the Millers played here, so it is an extra special welcome to our guests, and a chance to say “thank you” for all the loan signings over the past few seasons. Last Thursday was a bit of an anti-climax to the World’s Oldest Derby, it was a game we never really turned up for, and in the end Hallam were worthy winners of the trophy. On Saturday we gained our first win, although it is never about the results at this time of the season and more about the performances, but with some pretty good showings from the Scholars who played bodes well for the future. Enjoy the game.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Rotherham United Football Club was formed in 1925, although their roots stretch much further back. Rotherham County began life in 1870, originally known as Thornhill, winning the Midland League for four consecutive seasons between 1912 and 1915. They lifted the Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup twice in the same period and were elected into the Football League following World War I. The history of Rotherham Town FC dated back to 1878, becoming founder members of the Midland League in 1889, a title they won in 1892 and 1893. They won Sheffield & Hallamshire Cups in 1889 & 1890 and were elected to the Football League in 1893 but struggled for 3 seasons before the club folded. A second incarnation of Rotherham Town appeared in 1905, via a name change from a club created 6 years earlier. This side won the Sheffi eld Association League in 1903 before joining the Midland League. Like the other Rotherham sides, they also managed to claim a pair of Sheffi eld & Hallamshire Cups, 1920 & 1925. Interestingly, the original Rotherham Town provided the first opposition for Liverpool FC in 1892 and both version of Town recorded 13-0 victories over Sheffi eld FC! In 1925 Town and County merged to create the modern-day club Rotherham United, taking over County’s place in the Football League. They played in Division 3 North through to the outbreak of World War II with little success. Following the resumption of the Football League United finished 2nd in the table on three consecutive occasions before winning the title and promotion in 1950/51. They played at the second tier of English football for 17 seasons, only missing promotion to the top flight on goal average in 1955, before relegation in 1968. In 1961 the side had also reached the final of the inaugural Football League Cup competition; they won the first leg of the final 2-0 but were defeated 3-0 by top flight Aston Villa in the return. In 1973 United were relegated to Division 4 but bounced back just 2 years later and in 1981 claimed the Division 3 title and another promotion. The up-and-down pattern continued for the rest of the 20th century: relegated in 1983 and 1988, winning immediate promotion the following year, back down to Division 4 in 1991 followed by bouncing straight back from the bottom step of the league again. Relegated in 1997, a year after they won the EFL Trophy at Wembley, they missed out in the play-offs 2 years later and would enter the 21st century playing Tier 4 football. That wasn’t to last for long and consecutive promotions meant they lined up for the 2001/02 campaign against opponents such as Manchester City, West Brom, Wolves and both local Sheffield rivals. If one set of supporters have become used to a roller coaster ride it is Rotherham’s though, and they haven’t been disappointed over the last 16 seasons. Relegation in 2005 was followed by a string of financial problems with a total of 37 points deducted from the team between the 2006/07 and ‘08/09 seasons, the period unsurprisingly ending with the side back down in the bottom division of the Football League. During this time, they lost their traditional Millmoor home and found themselves playing at Don Valley, a former ground for Sheffield FC of course, until moving to the impressive New York Stadium in 2012. The new home sparked an upturn in fortunes with consecutive promotions, via a quick drop and return to League 1 last season, meaning they will once again line up in the Championship this year.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

History Corner

With Andy Dixon

ww.sheffieldfc.com

We can find eleven previous fixtures against sides under the Rotherham United name, although there are many more meetings against the Rotherham Town and County sides which merged to form United.

As far back as November 1888 there are a pair of friendly wins against Rotherham Town, Club winning the first 5-4 at Clifton Lane in Rotherham and the return 3-1 at Bramall Lane a week later. Sheffield were a side struggling to keep pace with the growing power of professional football though and their winning run was ended the following season when Town won both meetings in the inaugural season of the Midland League. Later in the season Town would make it a treble with a 4 -0 win in the Wharncliffe Charity Cup Semi Final. Town’s dominance was confirmed in the following season when they beat Sheffi eld 13-0 in the FA Cup! The other 19th century clashes were against Town’s Reserves, interestingly playing a period under the name of Rotherham United over 30 years before the formation of today ’s side, with results fairly even. Town (a new incarnation) Reserves provided regular opposition in the early 19th century in various competitions, Club managing just 1 win and 3 draws in the 19 clashes we have listed to December 1905. The last of those was a second 13 -0 hammering, 15 years after the last! In March 1906 Club faced a side under the Rotherham County name for the first time, drawing 3 -3 with County Reserves in the Sheffield Association League, before losing the return 7-2 just 3 weeks later. In Sheffi eld’s defence they played the second match with just 9 players! Against both Town and County sides Club found results hard to come by and we don ’t have a single record of a victory against either, through to their merger in 1925. The story of football in the town was a complicated one and we also have recorded fixtures against teams called Rotherham Swifts, Rotherham Main, Rother Vale and Rotherham Amateurs. In 1925 Rotherham United were formed by a merger of the Town and County clubs and became the dominant side in the town. Rotherham Amateurs continued for a short period, the sides sharing 16 goals and a win apiece in two 1925 cup clashes before a pair of final meetings in the Sheffi eld Association League in 1926. The first meetings with sides under the United name were decisive wins for the new club with United Reserves beating Club 9-1 and then United ‘A’ going one better with a 10-1 victory. Shortly after though Sheffield did restore some pride in a league game against United’s ‘A’ team at their Clifton Lane Ground. Aided by a strong wind the home team took the lead two minutes from the start and added another before the break to lead comfortably at half -time. After the break the game turned though and, despite a third for their hosts, a pair of goals from Godfrey and another from Bentley ensured a share of the league points. After a break in fixtures for a few years either side of World War II there are a run of fixtures between Club and Rotherham United ‘A’ in Division 1 of the Yorkshire League during the 1950s. It also marked an upturn in terms of results for Sheffi eld who won 3 and drew 3 of the 6 results we have recorded from the 8 games which took place. There were certainly some entertaining matches too – not least a 4-4 draw in 1953 and a 5-3 win for Club 2 years later. Sheffi eld’s record goal-scorer Geoff Robinson netted 5 in those clashes and seemed to enjoy the meeting, scoring 9 in the 6 results we have. In fact, the only time he didn’t beat the United keeper was in a 1-1 draw at Abbeydale Road just before Christmas 1956 when they match was abandoned early due to heavy fog! At the end of the 1956/57 season United withdrew their ‘A’ team from the Yorkshire League and it would be over half a century before there was a game (that we know of at least) between the clubs. The next, and last until today, meeting between the sides came as part of a tough pre -season schedule in 2008, when Rotherham visited the Coach & Horses almost exactly 10 years ago, fielding a strong mix of reserve and youth players. After both FIRST MEETING – keepers had made good saves Sheffi eld took the lead on 8 minutes, as Woolley crossed for Vill Powell to stab goalwards, the 10/11/1888 ball was blocked but broke to Matt Roney who had the easiest of Friendly tasks to tap home from ten yards. Midway through the half Rotherham pulled level, with a nice cross from the right being met Rotherham Town 4 by Alex Rhodes, who steered into the corner of the net. The SHEFFIELD FC 5 stalemate was short-lived though, as five minutes before half-time a Steve Woolley corner beat everyone except Gary Townsend who LAST MEETING – rose to flick the ball home with a glancing header. It was second half of few chances, with the best effort coming when United’s 21/07/2008 Tom Cahill hit the post with a long-range shot. Later that season Friendly striker Cahill would join Ilkeston on loan and return to haunt Club with a brace against them in a League Cup game; although never SHEFFIELD FC 2 finding the back of the net in 8 senior Rotherham appearances Matt Roney, Gary Townsend Cahill has had a prolific career at a lower level, scoring over 100 Rotherham United 1 goals and he now plays in Australia, since moving down under in 2011. Sheffield FC 0 Hallam 2 Pre-Season Friendly Thursday 12/07/18 Attendance: 145 Hallam FC finally regained the Alan Cooper Memorial Trophy last Thursday, as two first half goals proved too much for a lacklustre Sheffield FC side, with the Countrymen running out deserved winners. It was a quiet opening, with the first chance of note falling to Leon Osborne, who saw his first effort

blocked before sending the rebound over the bar. Hallam’s keeper Archie Sneath had to be at his best, getting behind a fierce piledriver, making a fine stop to deny Sheffield. The visitors took the lead on 19 minutes, as Mitchell Dunne got behind the Sheffield defence, only to be hauled down by keeper Jamie Ingham, with Dunne picking himself up to slam the penalty home. Dunne made it 2-0 om 33 minutes, after being set free on the right the winger caught the

ball in his stride, lofting the volley over the top of Ingham and into the far top corner from the tightest of angles. Sheffield had a big shout for a penalty waved away by the referee in the second half, but other than that, Club looked fairly impotent going into the final third. Hallam coasted through to the final whistle with no major alarms, with a solid midfield performance and were able to hold on to lift the trophy for the first time since 2015, to the applause of both sets of fans.

Penistone Church 1 Sheffield FC 2 Pre-Season Friendly Saturday 14/07/18 Attendance: 115 Sheffield won their first game of the 2018/19 pre-season campaign on Saturday, as they ran out 2-1 winners on another scorching hot summer’s day, beating Northern Counties East side Penistone Church. On a rock-hard pitch, Club started the brightest, as Zeph Thomas went close twice – the first with a free-kick, the second reacting quick, only to stab the ball wide.

Penistone for their part gave an excellent account of themselves, and new signing Connor Glavin was far from shy on his debut, going close twice after trying his luck from distance. The deadlock was broken on 36 minutes, as Andrew Gascoigne – returning from a serious bout of salmonella – drove a shot from 25 yards that dipped into the bottom corner. The hosts pressed for the rest of the first half, with Jamie Ingham forced into a reflex save to stop Julian Lawrence deflected an effort into his own net, whilst two more efforts from the home side went either side of the post.

In the second half Penistone hit the bar with a great move on the right, with a second shot going not too far moments later in the fallout from the same attack. With 15 minutes remaining Church grabbed a deserved equaliser, a bursting break down the right wing caught Sheffield out of shape, with the cross being tapped in by the veteran Andy Ring. Club snatched victory in the 82nd minute, as youngsters Ehsan Mohammed and James Hastings teed up the ball for Leon Osborne, who picked his spot to curl the ball into the bottom corner.

Sheffield FC: Ingham, Turner, Eagle, Wright, Kay, Lawrence, Mackie, Gascoigne, Newsham, Thomas, Gregory. Subs: Downes, Mohammed, Yates, Osborne, Hastings, Purkiss, White, Hutchinson, Chapell.

Around the Club

Scholars

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sheffield FC’s collaboration with Maltby Academy Sixth Form has produced another starlet in the making, as Alfie Eagle made his first start for the Club First Team in the pre-season win against Penistone Church. The 16-year-old started in the left back position for the World’s First, and showed he wasn’t over-awed with some confident touches and overlaps, that gave him a standing ovation as he was replaced late in the game. Alfie has just completed year one of the SFC/Maltby Academy Scholarship Programme, which is still recruiting for the new year for new applicants.

Also adding to the success of the Sheffield FC Scholarships, but from a Meadowhead point of view, James Hastings , Ehsan Mohammed and Louis Hutchinson all made appearances in the second half for Club and gave very solid performances with Ehsan (in action right) and James involved in the build up to the winning goal. We are still holding Open Trials for Year 11 students (under 16’s age group) EVERY Tuesday at Maltby Academy between 4:00pm and 6:00pm. There is no appointment needed, just arrive in time to register your interest. VENUE: Maltby Academy, Braithwell Road, Maltby, Rotherham, S66 8AB DATE: EVERY Tuesday TIME: 4.00-6.00pm ESSENTIALS: Suitable Clothing, Shin pads, Water bottle. Contact Chris Dolby on 07967172718 or chris@sheffieldfc.com for more details.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Around The Club In Other News

Last Sunday Sheffield FC hosted a friendly between the Borussia Dortmund UK Fan Club and the BVB Legends team to raise money for the Bluebell Wood Charity. On Thursday at half time between Club and Hallam FC, Sheffield FC's Head of Operations Paul O'Brien was able to hand over a cheque for £167 to Bluebell Wood, with even more money collected on Thursday evening. We'd like to thank all who contributed to the worthy cause. _______________________________ Season Tickets for the 2018-19 Evo-Stik East Division season are on sale today from the Sheffield FC Club Shop, with prices held over from last season.

Adult tickets are £110 once again, with Concessions retailing at £55, giving outstanding value for money for the dedicated Sheffield FC supporter. Make sure you get yours, TODAY. _______________________________ Following a meeting of the directors, the Club has taken the very difficult decision to withdraw from The FA Women’s Championship (formerly FA WSL2). The financial commitments necessary to compete at this level are proving now too onerous. Sheffield FC has been a pioneer of women’s football in Sheffield over the past 15 years, and has competed with honour, pride and considerable success against clubs with much greater resources. Sheffield FC will continue to participate in girls’ and women’s football. The structure of the women’s game at elite level is moving towards a full-time operation which is not no longer consistent with where Sheffield FC is positioned as a club.

Club Ladies are expected to take their place in the Third Tier of Women’s football, the National League, with confirmation expected shortly.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

EARLY FOOTBALL Versions of football evolved in many early civilisations, example of these can be found in ancient China, Greece and Rome. In England the original games were played between villages in fields and streets. This ‘Mob Football’ involved hundreds of players and was little more than prolonged and violent street battles. During the 19th century a more refined version of the game grew in popularity within the public schools and universities, each playing to their own sets of rules. THE BIRTH OF SHEFFIELD FOOT BALL CLUB. During the 1850s the enthusiasm and influence of ex-public school and university students spread the popularity of the game around Sheffield. In the summer of 1857 William Prest and Nathaniel Creswick agreed that the game would be a splendid candidate for organised sport during the winter months. The pair wrote to the Public Schools for information, regarding their varying rules, with the aim of drawing up a set of laws embodying the best points from each. On October 24th, 1857, the world’s first football club was born in a greenhouse, at the home of Harry Chambers. Chambers went on to become one of the club’s greatest players, and Secretary, in a career that spanned over 40 years. Among the first rules drawn up were laws asserting that “no hacking or tripping up is fair under any circumstances”, “no player may be held or pulled over” and “it is not lawful to take the ball off the ground [using hands]”. Upon the formation of the Football Association in 1863, Sheffield Club’s insistence on these laws began the evolution into the game we recognise globally today. Heading, solid crossbars, corner kicks, free-kicks for fouls, throw-ins, a half-time change of ends and floodlit matches can all be traced to the innovators of Sheffield F.C.! EARLY YEARS Initially early matches, such as Married men v Unmarried, had to be played between Club members. Records also show games against local army sides. Following victory over the 58 th Army Regiment in 1860 a local report stated that, “most of the officers were adepts at the game, having, in their younger days, played in the public school matches, and the victory of the civilians was quite unexpected.” Following the birth of Hallam F.C., the world’s first inter-club game took place on Boxing Day in 1860. The match “was conducted with good temper and in a friendly spirit”, concluding in a 2-0 win for Sheffield. For several years all matches were played locally, against a rising number of new sides, before the first ‘out of town’ match was played in Nottinghamshire in 1865. In 1866 the first game limited to a length of 90 minutes was played at Battersea Park against London. The FA Cup was founded in 1871 and in its third season Sheffield became the first northern side to take part. They succeeded in reaching the quarter finals in this and two further seasons also, 1876 and 1878. 1872 saw the first international game, between England and Scotland in Glasgow, with Sheffield’s Charles Clegg playing for the England side. Clegg would later go on to be Chairman, and President, of the FA and receive a knighthood for his services to the game.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

From the 1880s onwards the rise of professionalism and Sheffield Club’s firm insistence of retaining their amateur status saw them overtaken and overshadowed by other sides in the area. During these years the very survival of the club owed much to the leadership of former players Harry Chambers and Harry Broughton Willey. After the death of the latter in 1933 the minutes stated that “Mr H.B. Willey for years had carried the Club on his back, administratively and financially, making up a yearly deficit from his own pocket.” It wasn’t all doom and gloom though! In fact Sheffield enjoyed possibly their greatest hour in 1904 when they won the Amateur Cup, beating Ealing 3-1 at Valley Parade, Bradford. YORKSHIRE LEAGUE 1949 brought admission to the Yorkshire League and a resurgence, which saw the side promoted to Division One in their third season and reach the League Cup final in 1953. In 1957 they celebrated their Centenary year and reached their first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup final in 1962. The 1950s also saw the emergence of the Club’s greatest legend with forward Geoff Robinson (above) scoring 232 goals over 216 appearances. After a period of yo-yoing between divisions the 1977 side were crowned Division Two Champions and reached that season’s FA Vase final at Wembley. They established themselves as a top division side in the Yorkshire League, lifting the League Cup in 1978, before joining the newly founded Northern Counties East League in 1982. NORTHERN COUNTIES LEAGUE The Division One title was won in both 1989 and 1991 and a first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup win came in 1994. In 2001 the club acquired a permanent ground, for the first time, when moving to its current home. After the turn of the century the side began to consistently challenge for promotion, winning both the League Cup and Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup on two occasions. The 2006/07 season ended with a 2 nd place finish and promotion to the Northern Premier League. NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE The side made an instant impact in reaching the 2008 play-off final, narrowly losing only on penalties. That first season also saw games against Inter Milan and Ajax at Bramall Lane, as part of the 150th birthday celebrations, and a few years later a win at Hallam’s Sandygate ground to mark the anniversary of the first inter-club match. Sheffield have twice more been involved in the season ending play-offs and lifted the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup on two further occasions also. Manager Mark Hume took over in May 2017, and hopes are high for 2017/18 of making good progress from last season’s disappointing 15th place finish. In addition the SFC Ladies’ team have now risen from the lowest rung of women’s football, to play alongside the elite of the game in the FA Women’s Super League. Sheffield Futsal Club were again amongst the country’s leading sides, the Under 19s won the League Cup and the Over 35s won the treble, whilst the newly formed Sheffield FC Veterans (with Jim Fern scoring, right) went to the San Siro Stadium in Milan to win the ACLI Invitational Trophy as the club continues to go from strength to strength in the grass roots game in its 160th season.
