Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season
ww.sheffieldfc.com
Hello, good evening and welcome to the Home of Football for the first home To The Home of Football fixture of the 2018/19 Evo-Stik campaign, and especially to our visitors from Tadcaster Albion.
Welcome...
We had a dreadful start to our season on Saturday, not just in the result, but in the performance. It was a very lacklustre start, and we only started to play once we had conceded the first goal, but still couldn’t get back into the game. Less said the better about the second half, poor defending gave them an easy second, and then Gazza let both himself and the team down by needlessly letting frustration get the better of him and get sent off. Two more goals rubbed salt into the wounds, we only had ourselves to blame yet again, and the score probably did us justice. Sorry to all the people who made that long journey, we know we have some work to do, and that starts with tonight’s game against Tadcaster. They also made a losing start to their season, so they will be in the same boat as us, and will no doubt give us a difficult evening on the pitch. Enjoy the game.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season
ww.sheffieldfc.com
John Smith’s Football Club, so named due to the location of their ground behind the John Smith’s brewery, was formed in 1892. They were competing in the York Football League by the first decade of the 20th century and were promoted to the top flight in 1910. After the club struggled in the early years of the 1920s they changed their name to Tadcaster Albion for the 1923/24 season and were promptly promoted to the top flight of the York League once again. In the 1930s there was a Tadcaster Albion AND a John Smith’s FC (the latter winning promotion as champions in 1933) playing at the same ground and in the same league! With the event of World War II the clubs merged and kept the Tadcaster Albion name, along with their Brewers nickname. The united club proved a strong force and they won the York League in 1948, also finishing as runners-up in 1954. They remained at this level through to joining the Yorkshire League for the 1973/74 campaign.
In S18 Today... Tadcaster Albion
After a season so settle in the new competition they were promoted from Division 3 in 1975 and by 1977/78 were preparing for a first season in the top flight. 1977/78 was to prove the peak of their Yorkshire League years, finishing 9th in Division 1 and negotiating several rounds of the FA Vase to reach the 5th Round. Consecutive relegations followed and 7 years after leaving the 3rd tier of the league they were back, finishing 11th in the table, matching the final position of their ‘73/74 debut season. The Brewers improved, finishing 5th, in the next season before the Yorkshire and Midlands Leagues formed to form the Northern Counties East League. They missed out on promotion from NCEL Division 2 North by a single place in 1983 before being shuffl ed around division as the structure of the league changed in its early years. They landed in Division 3 (the 4th tier) for 1985/86 and were promoted, despite finishing in the bottom half of the table, to Division 2 where they played for 5 seasons. In 1991 Albion were moved to NCEL Division 1, after Division 2 was disbanded, and they remained there through the decades either side of the turn of the century. 2009/10 saw a real turning point in the fortunes of the club though and the season ended with Tadcaster top of NCEL Division 1, losing just 4 games as they pipped Brighouse Town to the title by a single point. Over the next 5 seasons they were pushing at the right end of the Premier Division table, finishing no lower than 8th, and also finding time to win the NCEL President’s Cup in 2011, produce a best ever FA Cup run in 2012/13 and reach the FA Vase Quarter Finals in 2014/15. After some close calls in previous years the 2015/16 campaign was to take Tadcaster to their highest level of competition as they smashed in well over 100 goals and totalled nearly 100 point to pip Handsworth Parramore to the NCEL Premier title. After a lowly finish in their first NPL season they reached the Play-Off Semi Finals last time around, only narrowly losing to eventual winners Bamber Bridge. They will certainly be hoping to challenge at the right end of the table again in this season’s Division 1 East although they started disappointingly, like ourselves, losing 2-0 at home to Carlton on Saturday.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season
History Corner With Andy Dixon was a geographical one.
ww.sheffieldfc.com
Despite being in the same league structure for a total of 36 seasons, prior to this year, the sides have only found themselves in the same division 5 times. This has generally been due to Sheffield playing at a higher level although there is one example where the Brewers were a league above and a few, including the last 2, seasons where the separation
Tadcaster had played in the York Football League prior to joining the Yorkshire League in 1973/74. Albion were placed in Division 3 alongside Sheffield, who were lining up for a 4th season in the third tier. Club had made a mixed start to the season, with an opening day win followed by a draw and 2 defeats, when they met Tadcaster in September. The match was settled by a single goal in favour of Sheffield who failed to follow up this positive result as they didn’t record a win in their next 4 games. By the time of the return in February neither side was challenging at the right end of the table and, despite Sheffield scoring 7 in their previous game, it was Albion who gained revenge for their defeat earlier in the season with a 2-1 win, forward Bob Sharpe with Club’s goal. The defeat seemed to spark a reaction from Sheffield who won 5 of their last 7 games to move up the table and finish 10th, one place above Tadcaster who finished on the same number of points. With hindsight we know that the season represented a low point for Club in the Yorkshire League and was followed by generally forward progress afterwards so perhaps something about that defeat at Tadcaster was genuinely a key turning point in our fortunes?! The following season’s records are one of the several big holes in our archives from the 1970s and early ‘80s so sadly we don’t have a record of the games between the clubs, beyond knowing the match in Sheffield was scheduled for April! What we do know is that Sheffield carried their late season improvement, on as they rose to 5th in the table, but that it was an even better season for Tadcaster. Today ’s visitors lost just 4 games as they finished 3rd and sealed promotion to the 2nd tier, the one season to date that has seen Albion playing at a higher level than Club. As the Brewers finished 7th in Division 2 in 1975/76 Sheffield were matching their promotion achievement to move up and join them. Sadly Sheffield’s 1976/77 Division 2 title winning season is another huge hole in the archives, so we don’t know the result of the meetings. We can probably guess that they would have been keenly contested though with Tadcaster ending the campaign 2nd in the table and both clubs being promoted to the top flight of the Yorkshire League, separated by just 3 points. From the season we do have a record of Club’s run to the FA Vase Final and it all began at the start of October when they were drawn at home to Tadcaster in Round 1. Despite the close battle that was to follow in the league there was nothing close about the result in their cup meeting with Sheffield progressing to the next round by a 4-1 score-line. Both clubs would spend the next 2 seasons in Division 1 of the Yorkshire League. In the first of those Sheffield finished 2 places higher in the final table although Tadcaster were victorious on home turf when they won the October clash between the sides 2-1. Sadly, this is the last meeting we have recorded so the result of the return is not known. In 1978/79 Club finished 5 places higher in the table as Albion were relegated to Division 2 at the end of the campaign. It is hard to estimate what the results of the games they played would have been as the margin in the final table is somewhat misleading – in the end Sheffield picked up just 3 more points, scoring less goals along the way with both clubs having the same number of wins. Perhaps we’re safest assuming the last meeting between the FIRST MEETING – sides was a draw?! After their relegation Tadcaster would go down again, meaning they spent the last 3 seasons of the Yorkshire League below Club, who maintained their place in the top flight. Albion were initially a level below Sheffield in the NCEL and when they did find themselves both in Division 1 in 1984 Club were in the Southern section with the Brewers in the Northern. Following this Tadcaster were at a lower level for the 22 years to Sheffield’s promotion to the NPL, with another 9 seasons passing before Albion also left the NCEL. For the last 2 years the North/South divide has kept the clubs apart but after the re-structure to East/West this year we find the rivalry renewed at last – exactly 40 seasons after the last season they were in the same division!

Marske United 4 Sheffield FC 0 The Evo-Stik East Division Saturday 18/08/18 Attendance: 295
Sheffield FC fell to a disappointing opening day defeat, writes Stuart James, as newly promoted Northern League Champions Marske United ran out comfortable 4-0 winners at the GER Stadium. Marske were the ones to start brightest, and should really have opened the scoring on 11 minutes, following a cross from Owens that really should have been buried by Carling. Liddle also tried his luck for the hosts, driving from the edge of the area, only to be denied by Turton in the Sheffield goal. Club had their chances to break the deadlock, as Turner’s long ball was picked up on the run by Dunne, unfortunately the Sheffield man could get a clean enough shot. Newsham had a chance seconds later, following a chest down by Gascoigne, the shot just off target. On 28 minutes the hosts managed to get on the scoresheet, Eagle was harshly penalised in a dangerous position for a foul on Gott, with GOTT curling the free-kick into the corner of the net with Turton flat-footed. Moments after the hosts had a chance to double the lead, as Liddle saw his shot deflected just wide of the mark. Sheffield eventually broke from their slumber, with Gregory heading on a solo run that ended with the winger shooting into the side netting. Rowbotham struck the post for Marske, before the visitors had the best chance of the half after Mackie’s run set up Dunne, with keeper Dean saving bravely at his feet. The early exchanges in the second period saw Butterworth shooting straight at the keeper, whilst Dunne did likewise from distance at the other end, with the keeper making easy work of the effort. The second came ten minutes after the restart, as Martin floated a free-kick from the right, with OWENS getting front to bury the easiest of headers. Club’s afternoon was made all the more difficult a minute later, as skipper Gascoigne was shown a straight red for abusive language, making the last 30 minutes an uphill struggle. Turner had to come to the rescue to deny Gott, after the midfielder had rounded the keeper with the goal Marske United: Dean, May, at his mercy. Rowbotham, Butterworth, Carling, Sheffield rattled the bar with a Dunne free-kick, and saw an effort cleared off the line after an Osborne run, but the goal wasn’t forthcoming. Ten minutes from time it was 3-0, as Martin’s cross was poorly defended, MAY getting on the end to head home. On 83 minutes it was 4-0, Sheffield seemingly out on their feet, allowing OWENS to take his time to toe-poke home. In injury time Club had a chance of a consolation, with Dunne once again going close, striking the foot of the post after hitting on the turn.

Chaplain’s Corner
Here to serve This is my second season as the club chaplain and I am looking forward to another season serving the club and like all of us with high expectations on the pitch. I know that Gav and the boys have been working hard in pre-season, so let’s get behind them from the start, as well as all the other squads that make up this historic club.
I am very privileged to be the chaplain and am available for anyone who would like to have a chat about anything that is important to them. The role of the chaplain is to provide confidential pastoral and spiritual support to anyone at the club, of any faith, or none. The chaplain recognises that people are all different from each other and have individual needs and circumstances, but at times need support and a listening ear. It may be that you just want to chat something through with an independent view? I am available to listen, discuss and help you through life's circumstances and simply put: A listening ear - so that you can talk with freedom and in confidence
An encouraging word - to help lift your spirits, if you are not feeling at your best Understanding - to provide support to help you reflect on your situation Support - practically and emotionally, as appropriate Prayer - if you wish, just ask I will be at most home games and at other times during the weekly life of the Club. You don't have to have a problem to have a chat. Please say hello and get to know me, I am here to help everyone. Contact Chris

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season
Gav’s Legends Ben Leonard
ww.sheffieldfc.com
Sheffield FC Manager and a Club Legend in his own right, Gavin Smith, has been catching up with some other legends of previous seasons this week we have midfield maestro Ben Leonard...
Gav - What teams did you play for before Sheff Club? Lenny - Bury, Tamworth, Buxton and Sheff Gav - How many appearances did you make for Sheff Club, and how many goals did you score? Lenny - About 60/70 appearances, and 4 or 5 goals Gav - What manager/managers did you play under and what was your relationship like with them? Lenny - Dolbs / Gav. Very good - I would often irritate them on the pitch but get boozed with them off it Gav - What is your most memorable game playing for Sheff Club, and what is the most memorable of your career? Lenny - Memorable game was Stocky away in senior cup quarter final, 3-0 down and won 4-3 I think, or Sheff United preseason elbowing Morgs after 5 minutes, or being captain at home to some Italian side once ha-ha! Gav - What was the best goal you scored for Sheff Club? (tell us about it please) Lenny - Think it was away at Leek Town, Dolbs had dropped me couple of weeks before for no reason whatsoever after playing brilliantly, brought me back in away at Leek, I think cow head crossed it, I did what I do and mullered the centre half and headed in the top bin, ran away and gave Dolbs the thumbs up, might even have kissed the badge too. Got dropped for next game ha-ha! Gav - Who was the Best player you played with while at the club and why? Lenny - Jord Eagers - top mate and made me look brilliant because he couldn’t head, tackle or work hard off the ball. I carried the piano he played it - at times. Gav - What were the best and worst grounds you played at during your career and why? Lenny - Hillsborough - massive owl says it all!! Worst - Bramall Lane Gav - Do you ever come down to watch the Sheff Club or follow their results? Lenny - Been a few times, and yes I love it. I follow them on Twitter and see what they’re doing every week, I still know a few players so keep in touch. Gav - Do you have any lasting memories of the Sheff Club supporters? Lenny - Great supporters followed the lads everywhere, even buying beers in the Coach after the games. Big Matt Pindar loved getting involved with the lads. Gav - Are there any funny moments, dressing room banter, training ground incidents that you remember from your time with the club? Lenny - Wakka’s dad chucking a bin on top of an opposition goal keeper. Slim the Physio running on to treat Loz Gaughan who was knocked out on his debut away at Cammell Laird and instead of putting him in recovery position he put him in the star fish on his back ha-ha! Raising twenty six quid for lads kitty by eating a daddy long legs in dressing room before a game. Strolling in at 6am in Hong Kong on the morning of a quarter final against Chengdu Blades after being told not to go out, eating breakfast wearing a shower cap playing in goal and beating them 2-0 ha-ha!! Gav - Where did you go when you left Sheff Club, what have you done since? Lenny - Stocky, Frickley, Belper and Assistant Principal of Chobham Academy in London Gav - Who had the best/ worst banter in the changing room? (and why) Lenny - Worst banter Greg Wright - didn’t have any. Best probably me (haha) or Gazza!

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season
ww.sheffieldfc.com
69 years ago The football season tended not to start so early until after the wars, and generally for some time after, and there are very few records before this date – a game against the newly formed Sheffield United on August 2nd in 1889. The first game we have in the archive which was played over the last 7 days doesn’t come until 1949 when Club lost 1-4 away to Bentley Colliery in Division 2 of the Yorkshire League. The season didn’t start well as Sheffield lost their next match 5-1 and wouldn’t win until the end of October. August 20th: Bentley Colliery – 4, SHEFFIELD FC – 1 65 years ago The season opener in 1953 was a trip to play Skegness Town, which ended in defeat despite a hat trick scored by Club’s all-time record scorer Geoff Robinson. The match, which took place on this date, certainly didn’t inspire the season either as the side would be relegated from Division 1 of the Yorkshire League. August 21st: Skegness Town – 5, SHEFFIELD FC – 3 (Geoff Robinson-3) 50 years ago At last we have something positive to recall with Club starting their Division 2 campaign with a home win over Brodsworth Miners Welfare in 1968. The 2 sides would both finish the season in midtable. August 17th: SHEFFIELD FC – 2 (Ernest Moore-2), Brodsworth Miners Welfare – 1 45 years ago Another positive opener against Brodsworth Miners Welfare came 5 years later, in what was to be a poor season for both sides in Division 3 of the Yorkshire League. The game was a cracker though with the home side coming out on top by the odd goal in 5. August 18th: SHEFFIELD FC – 3 (Steve Hardisty-2, Paul Froggatt), Brodsworth Miners Welfare – 2 40 years ago The previous 3 seasons has seen Club promoted twice, reach the FA Vase Final and win the Yorkshire League Cup and they were on their way to a strong Division 1 season. They began with a solid draw at home to Bentley Victoria Welfare. August 19th: SHEFFIELD FC – 0, Bentley VW – 0 10 years ago Following the previous season’s run to the NPL Division 1 South Play-off Final hopes were high of another good challenge at the right end of the table as the 2008/09 campaign began. Those hopes seemed well founded with a win in a high-scoring, end to end battle at Gresley being followed by another point added at home to Carlton Town. The strike duo of Vill Powell and Scott Partridge certainly hit the ground running with 3 goals apiece in the opening week. August 16th: Gresley – 2, SHEFFIELD FC – 5 (Vill Powell-2, Scott Partridge-2, Asa Ingall) August 19th: SHEFFIELD FC – 2 (Vill Powell, Scott Partridge), Carlton Town – 2 5 years ago It was a mixed start in 2013 with a defeat and victory to kick off the new season in this week. A man of the match display from Ben Turner and an Andrew Gascoigne goal weren’t enough to prevent defeat away to Leek Town but the side bounced back in fine style 3 days later to hammer Lincoln United here. August 17th: Leek Town – 2, SHEFFIELD FC – 1 (Andrew Gascoigne) August 20th: SHEFFIELD FC – 4 (Andrew Gascoigne, Mark Fereday, Joel Purkiss, Steve Woolley), Lincoln United – 0 1 year ago Last season Club had already lost at Carlton Town, going down 3-0 on the opening day, and the uninspiring run continued in this week with just a point picked up at home in the league and an early FA Cup exit against NPL Division 1 North side Ossett Town. The winless run would extend over the first 7 matches, with just a single victory to our name through to the end of September. August 15th: SHEFFIELD FC – 2 (Andrew Gascoigne-2), Loughborough Dynamo – 2 August 19th: SHEFFIELD FC – 0, Ossett Town – 2

Sheffield FC The Players - 2018/19
Jamie Ingham – Goalkeeper Son of the late great NPL Legend Gary Ingham, 19-year-old Jamie is the first product of Sheffield’s Scholarship Partnership with Maltby Academy, breaking into the first team after impressing with the Under 19s and Under 21s over the past few seasons.
Joshua Turton – Goalkeeper Josh was highly sought-after before signing with Sheffield FC. The young goalkeeper enjoyed a fantastic campaign in 2017/18, furthering his development with Teversal Football Club, also impressing in pre-season trials. Alfie Eagle – Defender 17-year-old Alfie committed to Sheffield FC in August, having been picked out as one for the future by Rotherham United manager Paul Warne, and given a two-week trial with the Millers. A product of SFC’s Under 18s and 19s teams. James Kay – Defender James is a 29-year-old left back who joined the club for his second spell in June 2018 having played for Maltby Main, Goole AFC and Frickley Athletic after leaving the club in 2013. He was originally a trainee at Sheffield Wednesday. Julian Lawrence – Defender 25-year-old central defender joined Sheffield at the end of October, having played for Frickley Athletic, Worksop Town, Stocksbridge Park Steels, Hallam FC and Goole. Very vocal at the back and not shy at attacking either. Damian Magee – Defender Experienced and extremely reliable centre back who has had spells with Glapwell, Rainworth Miners Welfare Staveley Miners Welfare, Grantham Town and Clipstone amongst others. Ben Turner – Defender Chesterfield-born defender who returns to the World’s First after leaving in 2014 after previously being involved with Matlock Town, Goole and Belper Town. Highly dependable at right-back, comfortable at both defending and on the overlap. Daryl Winter – Defender Daz returned to Sheffield FC‘s First Team after a seven year gap, jumping at the opportunity to come out of retirement to help Club avoid relegation, with his typical brand of no-nonsense football and ferocious leadership. Adam Chapman – Midfield Experienced midfielder Chapman joined Club in November 2017. The former Sheffield United youngster had previously played at Oxford United, Newport County and Mansfield Town where he amassed over 150 Football League appearances. Moved to Gainsborough Trinity in 2015, before starting 2017 at Boston United. Also represented Northern Ireland at Under 21 level. Andrew Gascoigne – Midfielder Gazza returns to the World’s First after a period away with Goole AFC, Harrogate Town and Shaw Lane. Started with Sheffield Reserves and Under 19s before making his memorable breakthrough to the First Team.
James Gregory – Midfield “Jinky” is an exciting wide-man with a blistering turn of pace, returned for another spell having spent time in USA in 2013, and made his impact with some outstanding performances in the following two seasons and earning the accolade of Player of the Season in 2014-15.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season
ww.sheffieldfc.com
James Hastings – Midfield “Hasto” is yet another who has developed through the Sheffield FC Foundation Scholarship programmes, as well as performing in the WVH North Midlands League last season. Classy on the ball, and dangerous from the dead-ball. Anthony Mackie – Midfield Anthony was at Barnsley Academy and gained plenty of experience at Evo-Stik league football in spells at Goole AFC and latterly at Ossett Town. Capable of scoring goals, Anthony can play several positions and has resisted other offers to make the move to The Club. Ehsan Mohammed – Midfield Ehsan is an 18-year-old attacking midfielder who has shown he is no slouch when it comes to mixing it at first team level, having shown himself to be a star in last season's Under 18s and 19s sides. Matt Roney – Midfield The on-field Mr Sheffield FC if ever there is one, having served the World’s First Football Club in nearly 500 appearances, since joining Club as a fresh-faced youngster from local rivals Hallam FC. Still able to turn a game and has been known to chip in with the odd goal now and again.
Sam Wright – Midfield Central midfielder Sam also joined us from Ossett Town, and we are looking forward to seeing him in the thick of the action next season breaking up opposition play and setting up chances for our own strikers. Jamie Yates – Midfield Jamie is a lively, tricky winger whose former clubs include Rotherham United, Boston United, Gainsborough Trinity and Matlock Town. Jamie can play on either wing and worked his way through the Rotherham United youth setup before playing 34 league games for the club. Michell Dunne – Forward Signed in close season from Hallam FC, having impressed in the annual World’s Oldest Derby match for the Blues, Mitch is a goal-scoring predator who can strike from anywhere around the area. Still young, and destined for a big future. Waide Fairhurst – Forward Fairhurst is a well-travelled energetic, creative forward, who is just as effective with either foot and he is a versatile attacker, capable of playing anywhere along the front line, as a striker, supporting forward, or even as a winger. Marc Newsham – Forward Former Rotherham United, Boston United and Matlock Town striker returns to The Club 13 years after making appearances on loan whilst on professional terms with the Millers. Marc scored 110 goals in 209 appearances for Boston United before joining Evo-Stik Premier Division Matlock Town two seasons ago. Leon Osborne – Forward Well travelled forward who started his career at Bradford City, before moving on to Southport, Harrogate Town, Stalybridge Celtic, Buxton, Goole, Frickley Athletic, Matlock Town, Rainworth Miners Welfare, Farsley Celtic, Long Eaton United, Bradford Park Avenue, Brighouse Town, Hyde United and Scarborough Athletic.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season
ww.sheffieldfc.com
EARLY FOOTBALL Versions of football evolved in many early civilisations, example of these can be found in ancient China, Greece and Rome. In England the original games were played between villages in fields and streets. This ‘Mob Football’ involved hundreds of players and was little more than prolonged and violent street battles. During the 19th century a more refined version of the game grew in popularity within the public schools and universities, each playing to their own sets of rules. THE BIRTH OF SHEFFIELD FOOT BALL CLUB. During the 1850s the enthusiasm and influence of ex-public school and university students spread the popularity of the game around Sheffield. In the summer of 1857 William Prest and Nathaniel Creswick agreed that the game would be a splendid candidate for organised sport during the winter months. The pair wrote to the Public Schools for information, regarding their varying rules, with the aim of drawing up a set of laws embodying the best points from each. On October 24th, 1857, the world’s first football club was born in a greenhouse, at the home of Harry Chambers. Chambers went on to become one of the club’s greatest players, and Secretary, in a career that spanned over 40 years. Among the first rules drawn up were laws asserting that “no hacking or tripping up is fair under any circumstances”, “no player may be held or pulled over” and “it is not lawful to take the ball off the ground [using hands]”. Upon the formation of the Football Association in 1863, Sheffield Club’s insistence on these laws began the evolution into the game we recognise globally today. Heading, solid crossbars, corner kicks, free-kicks for fouls, throw-ins, a half-time change of ends and floodlit matches can all be traced to the innovators of Sheffield F.C.! EARLY YEARS Initially early matches, such as Married men v Unmarried, had to be played between Club members. Records also show games against local army sides. Following victory over the 58 th Army Regiment in 1860 a local report stated that, “most of the officers were adepts at the game, having, in their younger days, played in the public school matches, and the victory of the civilians was quite unexpected.” Following the birth of Hallam F.C., the world’s first inter-club game took place on Boxing Day in 1860. The match “was conducted with good temper and in a friendly spirit”, concluding in a 2-0 win for Sheffield. For several years all matches were played locally, against a rising number of new sides, before the first ‘out of town’ match was played in Nottinghamshire in 1865. In 1866 the first game limited to a length of 90 minutes was played at Battersea Park against London. The FA Cup was founded in 1871 and in its third season Sheffield became the first northern side to take part. They succeeded in reaching the quarter finals in this and two further seasons also, 1876 and 1878. 1872 saw the first international game, between England and Scotland in Glasgow, with Sheffield’s Charles Clegg playing for the England side. Clegg would later go on to be Chairman, and President, of the FA and receive a knighthood for his services to the game.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season
ww.sheffieldfc.com
From the 1880s onwards the rise of professionalism and Sheffield Club’s firm insistence of retaining their amateur status saw them overtaken and overshadowed by other sides in the area. During these years the very survival of the club owed much to the leadership of former players Harry Chambers and Harry Broughton Willey. After the death of the latter in 1933 the minutes stated that “Mr H.B. Willey for years had carried the Club on his back, administratively and financially, making up a yearly deficit from his own pocket.” It wasn’t all doom and gloom though! In fact Sheffield enjoyed possibly their greatest hour in 1904 when they won the Amateur Cup, beating Ealing 3-1 at Valley Parade, Bradford. YORKSHIRE LEAGUE 1949 brought admission to the Yorkshire League and a resurgence, which saw the side promoted to Division One in their third season and reach the League Cup final in 1953. In 1957 they celebrated their Centenary year and reached their first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup final in 1962. The 1950s also saw the emergence of the Club’s greatest legend with forward Geoff Robinson (above) scoring 232 goals over 216 appearances. After a period of yo-yoing between divisions the 1977 side were crowned Division Two Champions and reached that season’s FA Vase final at Wembley. They established themselves as a top division side in the Yorkshire League, lifting the League Cup in 1978, before joining the newly founded Northern Counties East League in 1982. NORTHERN COUNTIES LEAGUE The Division One title was won in both 1989 and 1991 and a first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup win came in 1994. In 2001 the club acquired a permanent ground, for the first time, when moving to its current home. After the turn of the century the side began to consistently challenge for promotion, winning both the League Cup and Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup on two occasions. The 2006/07 season ended with a 2 nd place finish and promotion to the Northern Premier League. NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE The side made an instant impact in reaching the 2008 play-off final, narrowly losing only on penalties. That first season also saw games against Inter Milan and Ajax at Bramall Lane, as part of the 150th birthday celebrations, and a few years later a win at Hallam’s Sandygate ground to mark the anniversary of the first inter-club match. Sheffield have twice more been involved in the season ending play-offs and lifted the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup on two further occasions also. Manager Mark Hume took over in May 2017, and hopes are high for 2017/18 of making good progress from last season’s disappointing 15th place finish. In addition the SFC Ladies’ team have now risen from the lowest rung of women’s football, to play alongside the elite of the game in the FA Women’s Super League. Sheffield Futsal Club were again amongst the country’s leading sides, the Under 19s won the League Cup and the Over 35s won the treble, whilst the newly formed Sheffield FC Veterans (with Jim Fern scoring, right) went to the San Siro Stadium in Milan to win the ACLI Invitational Trophy as the club continues to go from strength to strength in the grass roots game in its 160th season.
