Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Welcome... To The Home of Football

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Hello, good afternoon and welcome to the Home of Football for the home fixture of the 2018/19 EvoStik campaign, and especially to our visitors from Pontefract Collieries. We are looking forward to the game this weekend, and we know we will have to work hard as a team to get anything out of the game. We know Pontefract are a strong organised team and they have had a great start to the season. At the moment we are missing chances and making silly mistakes which we are getting punished for, and that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. We hope you get behind the team, and we’ll be doing our utmost to get that first win under our belts. Enjoy the game

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Pontefract is known to have had a football club as far back as the 1890s when a side, presumably composed mainly of soldiers, competed in the West Yorkshire League as Pontefract Garrison. There was also a Pontefract Borough club which played in the Yorkshire League in the 1928/29 season, finishing bottom of the 16 sides. By 1935, a club called Tanshelf Gems were playing at Ackworth Road in the town, later being known as Pontefract United. United ruled the roost in local football before the war before being joined by a Pontefract Collieries side, who by the late 1950s had gained slight bragging rights over their town rivals, both playing in the West Yorkshire League. In 1960 the old Collieries club became extinct, only for the name to return a couple of years later when United merged with a local youth side and adopted the name for themselves.

In S18 Today... Pontefract Collieries

The new club quickly gained in stature and found considerable success in the West Yorkshire League, before joining the Yorkshire League in 1979. The side won Division 3 of the Yorkshire League in 1982 and joined the newly formed Northern Counties East League the following season. They were immediately promoted from Division 2 North and then won Division 1 North in the following campaign. They played in the NCEL Premier Division in 14 of the next 15 seasons, with a highest finish of 7th in 1989. After being relegated in 1999 they mostly struggled in the lower reaches of Division 1 over the next decade before improving to finish 5th in each season between 2010 and 2013. After a slight dip they began a see-saw period with promotion in 2015, relegation the following year and promotion again in 2017. Back in the top flight of the NCEL last season they not only stabilised but won the league, losing just 6 times as they amassed an impressive 102 points and knocked in an incredible 134 goals in their 42 games to finish ahead of Pickering Town and AFC Mansfield. They also had a best ever run in the FA Vase competition, having never progressed beyond Round 2 before, by beating Main Road, Winsford United, Litherland REMYCA, Hall Road Rangers and Worksop to reach the 4th Round. There they came up against an 1874 Northwich side, who would go on to reach the Semi Finals, who proved too strong for them. Their NCEL title win sealed promotion to the Northern Premier League for the first time where they have so far made a positive start. Two goals from Eli Hey and a third from Connor Smythe gave them a comfortable 3-0 victor over Lincoln United on the first day of the Division 1 East season. They followed that up with a 1-0 success away to last season’s NCEL rivals Pickering Town, Spencer Clarke grabbing the only goal of the game in the 88th minute. Despite two more goals from Hey they dipped out of the FA Cup away to Dunston UTS, after leading twice, in the Preliminary Round last weekend. On bank holiday Monday they welcomed early pacesetter Stamford to the Harratt Nissan Stadium and took a lead into the half time break, courtesy of a Michael Dunn goal. After the interval the visitors proved too strong for them though with 2 goals seeing Stamford make it 3 wins from 3. Sitting 7th in the table The Colls will want to get their challenge for a third straight promotion back on track with a good result here this afternoon.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

It has been nearly 18 years since the sides met each other after a record of 20 games between the clubs in the preceding 20 years. In total the results have very much favoured Sheffield, who have won 12 of the game with just 4 successes for The Colls. The first meeting took place the season after Pontefact had joined the Yorkshire League, with today ’s opponents playing in Division 3 and Club in the top flight. Drawn together in the 1st Round of the League Cup the visitors made light work of the gap in levels between the sides as they came to Sheffield and won 2-1 to progress to the next round. Upon the formation of the Northern Counties East League Pontefract raced into the Premier Division and it would be several years before Sheffi eld joined them to play a first league game. That came in September 1989 with a 0-0 draw between the sides in Sheffield. In late January Club won the return by a 3-1 scoreline and the following month set the tone of the next several meetings by winning 6 -0 at home in a League Cup game. Due to ground issues Club were relegated from the Premier Division but did meet Pontefract in the FA Vase, winning a Preliminary Round tie 3-0 in October. After romping to the NCEL Division 1 title the sides resumed their league encounters over the next several season with Sheffield initially continuing their success when the clubs met on the pitch. Rob Spotswood and Phil Stafford scored the goals for Club as they won 2-1 in Pontefract in October 1991 and the strikers were both on the scoresheet again in the return, this time joined by Nigel Bailer and Mark Walshaw to help pick up a comprehensive 4-0 win as Sheffield ended the season 10 league places higher. Both sides won the away game in the following season, Sheffield winning the first 3-2 before The Colls broke their losing habit by winning 2-0 in the return. They repeated their success in Sheffi eld in later September 1993 by winning 3-2 and the return game was tied after both sides found the net once in the 90 minutes. Early in the 1994/95 season the 1-1 score was repeated as Collieries extended their unbeaten run in the games to 4 meetings although Sheffi eld returned to winning ways in fine style by winning 4-2 in February. Pontefract ended that season with just 3 wins from their 38 games and were unsurprisingly relegated from the Premier Division, as Club finished only 2 places higher in 18th. The sides found themselves in the NCEL top flight over the next 3 season, before Pontefract were once more relegated, this time for a longer period in which Sheffield clinched promotion to the Northern Premier League. Simon Mourne and Roger McKenzie were the goal scorers for Sheffield in their 2-2 draw in Pontefract in November 1996 and the return saw a much more one-sided affair as Tim Butterfield and Scott Exton both found the next twice for Club in a 6-0 victory. 1997/98 witnessed home wins for both sides, Collieries winning 2-1 in October and Sheffield 3-1, David Lloyd scoring twice, in the return game. The following season for the final league clashes, until today, between the sides. Paul Nasim scored the only goal of the game for Sheffield to take a 1-0 win FIRST MEETING – away from home before a more convincing 4-1 victory in the January return; Jamie Creaghan, Richard Shipstone, 01/11/1980 Mark Smith and Roger McKenzie scoring our Yorkshire League Cup Rnd 1 goals. There was one more meeting between the clubs SHEFFIELD FC 1 however, just past the turn of the century in September Pontefract Collieries 2 2000 when they were drawn together in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Vase. On that occasion strikes from Richard Davenport and Darren Vine settled the tie in Club’s favour although sadly our run was LAST MEETING – ended, despite another goal from Davenport, by 23/09/2000 Newcastle Benfield Saints in the next round. FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Rnd All in all our previous meetings have been pretty SHEFFIELD FC 2 successful for Sheffield and hopefully we can get our Pontefract Collieries 0 season up and running today with another positive result against today’s opposition.

Hyde United 5 Sheffield FC 1 FA Cup Preliminary Round Saturday 25/08/18 Attendance: 381

Club exited the FA Cup at the first hurdle for the third time in four seasons, writes Stuart James, as they suffered a harshly heavy defeat at the hands of Evo-Stik Premier League outfit Hyde United. The hosts ran out 5-1 winners, with substitute Karl Jones grabbing the perfect hat-trick, however the score line doesn't reflect the performance of the Sheffield outfit. Both sides started positively, with Hyde having the first chances of the game, as Tom Pratt had an effort deflected for a corner and Chib Chilaka having a shot trickle onto the post. The first goal of the game came on 14 minutes; Pratt caused mayhem on the right hand side putting the ball into the mix, and with Club only managing to half clear the ball, Chilaka hit the ball on the turn to squeeze the ball through the mĂŞlĂŠe and into the corner of the net. Sheffield responded positively, with Jamie Yates dictating play in the middle, and teeing up a chance for Waide Fairhurst that was volleyed over the bar. The youngsters Ehsan Mohammed and James Hastings were impressing against their illustrious opponents, with Mohammed particularly lively on the ball, and curling an effort just over the bar James Gregory also went close for the away side, as a mix-up in the Hyde defence was nearly punished, and keeper Peter Crook having to be alert to snuff out the danger. From the restart Sheffield looked the more likely to change the scoreboard, with Hastings turning provider by scooping the ball through to Gregory, with the end product not far off the mark.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Fairhurst went close not long after, a break down the right by Mohammed saw the ball played in to the middle, and following a step-over from Dunne, the keeper had to be at his best at the feet of the Sheffield striker. Sheffield were starting to dominate proceedings, with Dunne heading just over the bar, and pressing at every opportunity. That though was soon to change dramatically, as Kyle Harrison found a gap in the heart of the defence, slipping the ball to it to Karl Jones who dribbled it round the keeper and into the empty net to make it 2-0. The game was over as a contest ten from time, with Luke Porritt blocking a clearance with what looked like handball, Jones took advantage and squaring to Pete Boyle who tapped it in. The salt was well and truly rubbed into sore wounds on 88 minutes, with Pratt chipping the ball into a weary looking Sheffield defence, and Jones heading home. It was five on the stroke of 90 minutes, again it was Pratt who was the provider by playing into the mix, Club could only half-clear once again, with Jones completing his hat-trick with a cool finish. Sheffield got a well deserved consolation goal, as they continued to push forward to the death, and Marc Newsham driving the ball home at the back post to complete the scoring. Unlike the earlier two games of the season, it was a result that was more than harsh on a very lively Sheffield outfit, and one that could have gone either way in the first 70 minutes. As it was, Club exit the FA Cup once again, with Hyde United progressing where they’ll meet Evo-Stik West side Colne FC in the First Qualifying Round.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Stocksbridge PS 3 Sheffield FC 2 The Evo-Stik East Division Monday 27/08/18 Attendance: 238

Sheffield’s losing start to the season continued through to the Bank Holiday derby fixture at Bracken Moor, writes Stuart James, as Club disappointingly lost 3-2 to local rivals Stocksbridge Park Steels. It was a frantic first 15 minutes on a blustery day in the northern hills, and it was Steels who drew first blood on just 4 minutes. When James Hastings tripped Ben Rhodes in the box. Up stepped ex-Clubbie Scott Ruthven, drilling the spot kick into the opposite corner to the one Ross Durrant chose. Durrant had to be at his best to stop it being two moments later, Tom Charlesworth chipping a ball into the box, with the keeper bravely saving at the feet of Luke Mangham. Sheffield started to come into the game, Mitch Dunne bringing a long ball down on the edge of the box, and curling his shot on the turn just over.

James Gregory was at his liveliest best moments later, bursting through the defence to cross a ball, Dunne stepped over the ball to allow Waide Fairhurst the shot - with the post coming to the home side’s rescue. It was another Gregory burst that led to the equaliser on 15 minutes, with the winger brought down in a dangerous area, and skipper Jamie Yates placing the free-kick just inside Jordan Greaves’ post. The game more or less ground to a half after that point, with neither side causing much interest until the 42nd minute when Steels’ were awarded a free-kick on the right, the ball put into the mix with another ex-Sheffield player Aaron Moxam capitalising on the lack of a clearance to hook home from close range. It took two minutes after the restart for Stocksbridge to grab the decisive goal, once again Mangham was the player causing the trouble for the visitors, driving a shot which Durrant couldn’t hold and Moxam once again on the spot Stocksbridge Park Steels: Greaves, to slam home the rebound. Club looked a shadow of the side that had shown so well 48 hours earlier at Hyde United, and could have suffered a similar scoreline, if not for some wasteful finishing - with Lewis Witham hitting the post, and Rory Coleman and Mangham being denied by the ever-busy Durrant. The score was given a closer than expected look in injury time, as Greaves was harshly judged to have tripped Dunne in the box - Dunne dispatched the penalty with ease, but it was too little and far too late for the World’s First.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

League Review

With Steve Whitney

ww.sheffieldfc.com

We are only three matches into the new Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One East season, writes Steve Whitney, but there are only two teams with a 100 per cent record.

Stamford AFC and Frickley Athletic are the two teams to have won their opening three matches, both winning 2-1 away from home on Bank Holiday Monday. The Daniels made their first visit to promoted and previously unbeaten Pontefract Collieries and, despite falling behind to a 39th minute Michael Dunn goal, won with goals from Rob Morgan on 51 minutes and Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson with 10 minutes to go. At Cleethorpes Town, a crowd of 442 saw Josh Batty give the home side the lead and Frickley battled back to win it with goals in the final 9 minutes from Jacob Hazel and Gavin Allott. Cleethorpes are one of five teams still looking for an opening win in 2018/19. Sheffield FC, promoted Pickering Town, Loughborough Dynamo, whose game was off due to Carlton Town's FA Cup involvement, and Spalding United are the others yet to taste victory. Pickering lost 2-0 at fellow newcomers Marske United, whose Andy May after 19 minutes and Glen Butterworth 5 minutes after half-time were on target. Spalding drew 1-1 at neighbours Wisbech Town where 337 saw Gary King's 3rd minute opener for the Tulips cancelled out by a Danny Setchell penalty after 35 minutes. Gresley FC are off the mark with a 3-2 win at Christchurch Meadow against Belper Town. The Nailers will be kicking themselves, however, as they led 2-0 through Craig Nelthorpe after 20 minutes and Nathan Curtis 5 minutes later. Martin Smyth's penalty 9 minutes after the break reduced the arrears and then Kieran O'Connell equalised on 71 minutes, with Dexter Morris-Clarke winning it for the Moatmen in time added on at the end. Newcomers AFC Mansfield lost for the first time – 4-1 at home to Lincoln United, whose Scott Matthews and Tom Garrick in the first half and Kevin Hemagou and a Mark Dudley own goal in the second proved too much for the hosts, whose Lynton Karkach replied 10 minutes from the end. Another new side, Morpeth Town (right), earned a good 3-0 win at Tadcaster Albion, thanks to Sean Taylor and Julian Petrache goals in the opening half and Ben Sayer shortly after half-time. It finished 2-2 in the Yorkshire derby between Brighouse Town and Ossett United, whose Aiden Chippendale gave them a 27th minute lead. Marley Grant levelled right on half-time and a James Knowles own goal had the home side ahead on 62 minutes, but George Grayson equalised with 12 minutes to go. Integro Cup 2018/19 Draw

The Northern Premier League’s second season proudly supporting The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation kicked off on Friday with the draw for the first round of the 2018-19 Integro League Challenge Cup campaign.

The EVO-STIK League’s showpiece cup competition will see all 62 clubs who went into the hat supporting the charity with adverts and promotional flyers around their grounds and in the matchday programmes of all ties until next April's final. Founded by the family and friends of the late Shaw Lane defender to raise funds in his name to stop others dying of undetected heart conditions following his tragic death in 2016 after collapsing on the pitch during an Integro League Challenge Cup clash at Brighouse Town, the fundraising foundation has already raised more than £50,000 with the help of the supporters across Non-League and the EVO-STIK League’s generous fans and clubs. Like 2018 Integro League Challenge Cup winners Atherton Collieries, and losing finalists Coalville Town, this season's winners and runners-up will once again collect £2000 and £1000 in prize money respectively. Losing quarter-finalists will collect £250 while the losing semifinalists will bank £500 each as sponsors Integro continue their long-running support for the cup competition. Extra-time will not played over the course of the 2018-19 competition if the scores are level in any ties after 90 minutes with the results decided on penalties.

Linden Club Clee Road Grimsby North East Lincolnshire DN32 8QL Telephone: 01472 693601 th Tuesday 11 September 2018 (KO 7:45)

By Car Take M180 towards Cleethorpes and Grimsby, continuing onto A180, as far as Lockhill roundabout (signposted A16 Grimsby Town Centre) turning right onto A16 past the Burger King. Follow A16 as far as A46 crossroads, signposted Cleethorpes (A1098) at junction just before lights, turning left onto Weelsby Road. Continue along here, past first roundabout, the ground is set back on the left hand side, with parking on the field area.

From Home of Football : 1 hour 40 mins - From Sheffield Centre: 1 hour 30 mins

By Public Transport Nearest Station: Cleethorpes 1m. Bus 4 from Sea Road (alongside station), every 60 minutes, alight at Clee Crescent, 9 minutes walk along Weelsby Road. Ground on right hand side.

What to Expect Brand new ground which is functional - two prefab stands (one on halfway and one behind the near goal) and a prefab terrace at the far end. Hot food and drink is served from a separate area in the clubhouse, where the gents toilet has an amusing mural to gaze at while stood there. Plenty of parking on site, mostly on the large field next to the main car park. Sheffield FC v Pontefract Collieries The Evo-Stik East 01.09.18

Awaydays Frickley Athletic

Westfield Lane, South Elmsall, Pontefract, West Yorkshire, WF9 2EQ Telephone: 01977 642 460 nd Saturday 22 September 2018 (KO 3:00)

By Car The best way is to approach this from the M18 and A1 - taking junction 38. From the A1 turn off onto the A638, towards Wakefield. At the second roundabout turn left onto the B6474 towards South Elmsall. Turn left at the traffic lights and then turn right at the T-junction to stay on the B6474. Go over the railway line and turn right at the bottom of the road and then immediately left up Westfield Lane. The ground is signposted on the left after about ½ mile. Get there early and there is parking available pretty close to the ground, leave it too late (or if the big numbers turn up) then I'm afraid it is street parking around the warren of roads around Westfield Lane.

From Home of Football : 1 hour

-

From Sheffield Centre: 50 mins *

By Public Transport Nearest Station: South Elmsall ½m. Up Station Approach and Station Road, right into Barnsley Road, left into Westfield Lane, and entrance to ground is on left; ground is beyond cricket ground. (The first football ground you come to is not the one; continue past Oxford Street).

What to Expect This is what you might call a "traditional" nonleague ground - none of your new builds here! Despite its lived in look, it is one of my favourites. The ground is dominated by the elevated main stand and the iconic slag heap opposite! There are plenty of good viewing points, with covered standing along the far touchline, behind both goals are areas of uncovered terracing. All mod-cons are catered for here - there is a nice little clubhouse that opens before and after the game, a decent club shop for all you souvenir hunters, and food available from the snack bar which opens thirty minutes before the game. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Chaplain’s Corner

Loud and Proud What a summer we had, the World Cup seems a long time ago, but there we were full of hope and expectation that we might see England lift the trophy but let’s be honest a semi-final was a great outcome for such a young team. We can look forward to the Euro’s and future competitions with a renewed hope and pride in our national team.

I was pleased on many fronts to see that our players and staff equipped themselves well and was impressed to see that even the national anthem was sung with passion mostly, so well done Mr Southgate and the whole squad and backroom staff. On the pitch as well, we saw attacking football played at pace and cool heads under pressure for the penalty shootout, something we have struggled with in past tournaments. And then Croatia, a country with only 4 million people, reaching a World Cup final at England’s expense. We visited Croatia a few weeks ago for a holiday and I have to say there wasn’t that much fuss about the football outcome, but what a country and such amazingly proud people. Bear in mind that only 20 years ago they were dealing with a homeland war, which had a massive and significant impact on the Balkan region. Pride is a strange thing, it can be helpful and galvanise a nation toward a common goal and it can also affect us in less positive ways, we have all heard the saying ‘pride comes before a fall’. It can be something that causes to have a foolish and irrational sense of our own personal value, it can also refer to a humble and content feeling and is a product of praise, independent self-reflection, and fulfilment. Having pride and being proud is a good thing if it is done with humility and not arrogance, so we can be proud of this club and its place in football history, lets be loud and proud today, come on boys! Enjoy the game. Cheers Chaplain Chris Sheffield FC v Pontefract Collieries The Evo-Stik East 01.09.18

Sheffield FC Over 60's walking football team turned on the style to win the TRA National Charity Cup Finals held in Romford on Sunday 26 August. Having been crowned Midlands champions, Club travelled to Romford to play against all the other regional champions. The omens looked good from the outset with Club winning all their five group games. The final against Norwich City saw Club turn in a top drawer performance to triumph 4-1. Club have a brilliant record of winning 17 out of the last 20 regional, national and international competitions they have entered during the last two years, with the only setbacks being where they have lost on penalty shoot outs in the finals.

Sheffield FC 2 Middlesbrough 3 FA Women’s National League North Sunday 26/08/18 Attendance: 65

A wet and soggy afternoon in Sheffield saw last season’s Northern Premier Division third placed side Middlesbrough make a return to the Home of Football Stadium for the first time in seven years. But it was the hosts who opened the scoring after just three minutes when Lisa Giampalma punished an error in the Middlesbrough defence, intercepting a wayward clearance and the forward’s quick-thinking from 25 yards out sent the defence scrambling back fruitlessly as she sent the ball into the empty net and the perfect start for Sheffield. Middlesbrough were not to be deterred though and hit back just five minutes later when Emma Foster rose above a static Sheffield defence and powered home a solid header from a ‘Boro corner. An even half developed with both teams enjoying good spells of possession and threatening the goal on occasion. Sheffield’s Jess Heald and Ellie White provided good chances for Holly Housley to convert, but the ‘Boro defence stood firm. White was to be involved again on 35 minutes, turning her defender and unleashing a venomous left-footed strike beyond the keeper and inside the back post to give Sheffield the lead once more. After the restart, Sheffield looked to pick up where they left off, this time an ever present Molly Johnson looking to trouble the ‘Boro goal but to no avail. Five minutes in and Middlesbrough found their feet in the half earning a free-kick in a dangerous area. Becky Bass received the wide pass before sending a cross-come-shot into the box, catching goalkeeper Hobson out before finding its way under the crossbar and into the back the net for 2-2. Giampalma nearly established the lead once more, again profiting from an error at the back, but her first time shot was unable to test the keeper, keeping the scores level.

And minutes later with the game opening up, it was Middlesbrough’s turn to attack and they made no mistake as a flicked on long ball forward released Emily Scarr who drove on and slotted Sheffield FC: Hobson, Housley, home under the body of Hobson. White, Hawcroft, Giampalma, As the game wore on, Sheffield continued to search out an equaliser but to no avail. Molly Johnson stuck a long range effort to test ‘Boro’s stopper, Laura Wareham, who got finger tips to the shot to claw it out of the goalmouth and round the post for a corner. From the resulting set piece, M Johnson’s delivery found the head of Megan Tinsley, but again Wareham produced a superb save before a scramble on the line fell in Middlesbrough’s favour to preserve the visitor’s winning score line.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Gav’s Legends Paul Smith

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sheffield FC Manager and a Club Legend in his own right, Gavin Smith, has been catching up with some other legends of previous seasons - this week we have the deadball king , Paul Smith...

Gav - What teams did you play for before Sheff Club? Smudge - Burnley, Sheffield Wednesday, Hartlepool, Kidderminster, Alfreton Gav - How many appearances did you make for Sheff Club, and how many goals did you score? Smudge - Haven't a clue! Gav - What manager/managers did you play under and what was your relationship like with them? Smudge - Mac and Wal - Got on with both well except when they decided to play wing backs! Gav - What is your most memorable game playing for Sheff Club, and what is the most memorable of your career? Smudge - Too many to mention, with Club the first season I played there was great in general, after 15 years as a pro I drop down and end up meeting Pelé, playing against Inter Milan and being involved in the 150 year celebration was an honour. Playing at Anfield in the FA Cup 3rd Round for Burnley, the game had kicked off and I was still watching the KOP sing "You never walk alone", played against Ronaldinho when he was at Gremio, Play off Final in 1994… I could go on but it will bore you all !!! Gav - What was the best goal you scored for Sheff Club? (tell us about it please) Smudge - In the play-off final, free-kick 25 yards out, Cops wanted it but he had no chance, bent it round the wall to the keepers left hand corner to bring us back to 1-1. Gav - Who was the Best player you played with while at the club and why? Smudge - That's a hard one, as some of the players, in my opinion should have been a lot higher with the ability they had, Karl Colley, Tom Jones...great centre back pairing, Gav Smith scoring god knows how many goals from right back, Daz Winters, Asa Ingall, Vill Powell, Matt Outram I could go on, great ability...and of course Matt Roney...player/model/ entrepreneur...….yes I sat on the fence! Gav - What were the best and worst grounds you played at during your career and why? Smudge - Best - Wembley, Highbury, Anfield - obvious reasons… Worst - Leek Town - heaviest pitch ever and don't think I ever won there. Gav - Do you ever come down to watch the Sheff Club or follow their results? Smudge - I follow the results and take interest, but can’t get down at weekends, but I must try as I have good memories of the place and really enjoyed my time there! Gav - Do you have any lasting memories of the Sheff Club supporters? Smudge - The fans were always good with me, first season they were shouting "Senderos”… there was also a local element for me as one or two were from where I was born in the north east... never got any pies thrown at me or boos unlike Hillsborough so cant complain! Gav - Are there any funny moments, dressing room banter, training ground incidents that you remember from your time with the club? Smudge - The dressing room banter was typical of a football club, Steve Hawes (wouldn't or couldn’t shut him up) Gav Smith (one liners) Chris Dolby and Gav Townsend sing along on the coach on the way back...everyone in their own way added to the environment!! My first real experience of non league was away to Warrington on a Bank Holiday and we stopped at the services as we were early, one of the players ( wont name names) had been out all weekend drinking decided to have a McDonalds Meal and milk shake for his pre-match meal and still played well. Gav - Where did you go when you left Sheff Club, what have you done since? Smudge - When I left I went to Quorn for a while, Hucknall then moved back to the North West where I play now for the Vintage Clarets (Burnley FC over 35's) Gav - Who had the best/ worst banter in the changing room? (and why) Smudge - Best, Steve Hawes (Was just a funny lad with some great stories). Worst - Matt Roney - Always big time and name dropping.....only joking Roons!!!

128 years ago On this date in 1890 Club played at Bramall Lane against a young upstart side by the name of Sheffield United! It was a fifth meeting between the sides, United having won 3 with 1 drawn previously. The professional side showed that they were now a dominant force against the amateurs with a crushing 9-0 victory at Bramall Lane. September 1st: Sheffi eld United – 9, SHEFFIELD FC – 0

In This Week With Andy Dixon

50 years ago Sheffi eld has begun the season with a couple of positive results and continued their successful start in this week in 1968. Classy on the ball, and dangerous from the dead-ball. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

EARLY FOOTBALL Versions of football evolved in many early civilisations, example of these can be found in ancient China, Greece and Rome. In England the original games were played between villages in fields and streets. This ‘Mob Football’ involved hundreds of players and was little more than prolonged and violent street battles. During the 19th century a more refined version of the game grew in popularity within the public schools and universities, each playing to their own sets of rules. THE BIRTH OF SHEFFIELD FOOT BALL CLUB. During the 1850s the enthusiasm and influence of ex-public school and university students spread the popularity of the game around Sheffield. In the summer of 1857 William Prest and Nathaniel Creswick agreed that the game would be a splendid candidate for organised sport during the winter months. The pair wrote to the Public Schools for information, regarding their varying rules, with the aim of drawing up a set of laws embodying the best points from each. On October 24th, 1857, the world’s first football club was born in a greenhouse, at the home of Harry Chambers. Chambers went on to become one of the club’s greatest players, and Secretary, in a career that spanned over 40 years. Among the first rules drawn up were laws asserting that “no hacking or tripping up is fair under any circumstances”, “no player may be held or pulled over” and “it is not lawful to take the ball off the ground [using hands]”. Upon the formation of the Football Association in 1863, Sheffield Club’s insistence on these laws began the evolution into the game we recognise globally today. Heading, solid crossbars, corner kicks, free-kicks for fouls, throw-ins, a half-time change of ends and floodlit matches can all be traced to the innovators of Sheffield F.C.! EARLY YEARS Initially early matches, such as Married men v Unmarried, had to be played between Club members. Records also show games against local army sides. Following victory over the 58 th Army Regiment in 1860 a local report stated that, “most of the officers were adepts at the game, having, in their younger days, played in the public school matches, and the victory of the civilians was quite unexpected.” Following the birth of Hallam F.C., the world’s first inter-club game took place on Boxing Day in 1860. The match “was conducted with good temper and in a friendly spirit”, concluding in a 2-0 win for Sheffield. For several years all matches were played locally, against a rising number of new sides, before the first ‘out of town’ match was played in Nottinghamshire in 1865. In 1866 the first game limited to a length of 90 minutes was played at Battersea Park against London. The FA Cup was founded in 1871 and in its third season Sheffield became the first northern side to take part. They succeeded in reaching the quarter finals in this and two further seasons also, 1876 and 1878. 1872 saw the first international game, between England and Scotland in Glasgow, with Sheffield’s Charles Clegg playing for the England side. Clegg would later go on to be Chairman, and President, of the FA and receive a knighthood for his services to the game.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

From the 1880s onwards the rise of professionalism and Sheffield Club’s firm insistence of retaining their amateur status saw them overtaken and overshadowed by other sides in the area. During these years the very survival of the club owed much to the leadership of former players Harry Chambers and Harry Broughton Willey. After the death of the latter in 1933 the minutes stated that “Mr H.B. Willey for years had carried the Club on his back, administratively and financially, making up a yearly deficit from his own pocket.” It wasn’t all doom and gloom though! In fact Sheffield enjoyed possibly their greatest hour in 1904 when they won the Amateur Cup, beating Ealing 3-1 at Valley Parade, Bradford. YORKSHIRE LEAGUE 1949 brought admission to the Yorkshire League and a resurgence, which saw the side promoted to Division One in their third season and reach the League Cup final in 1953. In 1957 they celebrated their Centenary year and reached their first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup final in 1962. The 1950s also saw the emergence of the Club’s greatest legend with forward Geoff Robinson (above) scoring 232 goals over 216 appearances. After a period of yo-yoing between divisions the 1977 side were crowned Division Two Champions and reached that season’s FA Vase final at Wembley. They established themselves as a top division side in the Yorkshire League, lifting the League Cup in 1978, before joining the newly founded Northern Counties East League in 1982. NORTHERN COUNTIES LEAGUE The Division One title was won in both 1989 and 1991 and a first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup win came in 1994. In 2001 the club acquired a permanent ground, for the first time, when moving to its current home. After the turn of the century the side began to consistently challenge for promotion, winning both the League Cup and Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup on two occasions. The 2006/07 season ended with a 2 nd place finish and promotion to the Northern Premier League. NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE The side made an instant impact in reaching the 2008 play-off final, narrowly losing only on penalties. That first season also saw games against Inter Milan and Ajax at Bramall Lane, as part of the 150th birthday celebrations, and a few years later a win at Hallam’s Sandygate ground to mark the anniversary of the first inter-club match. Sheffield have twice more been involved in the season ending play-offs and lifted the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup on two further occasions also. Manager Mark Hume took over in May 2017, and hopes are high for 2017/18 of making good progress from last season’s disappointing 15th place finish. In addition the SFC Ladies’ team have now risen from the lowest rung of women’s football, to play alongside the elite of the game in the FA Women’s Super League. Sheffield Futsal Club were again amongst the country’s leading sides, the Under 19s won the League Cup and the Over 35s won the treble, whilst the newly formed Sheffield FC Veterans (with Jim Fern scoring, right) went to the San Siro Stadium in Milan to win the ACLI Invitational Trophy as the club continues to go from strength to strength in the grass roots game in its 160th season.
