Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season
Welcome... To The Home of Football
ww.sheffieldfc.com
It was great to open our account last Saturday, as expected it was a difficult game, so we are all delighted
to get that first win of the season.
I thought the lads played brilliantly, especially after the pressure of expectation beforehand, and the commitment from the boys really was different class. We are still not happy with two of the goals we conceded, both were due to sloppy defensive mistakes, and it is a problem we still need to iron out as soon possible. The positives obviously came at the other end, we created so many chances, and scored five great goals. With the strike force we have we always look like we are capable of scoring goals, we need to carry with that, then all we need to contemplate is how to stop them at the other end. Sounds easy doesn’t it? Today we are up against Marske, the team who beat us on the opening day of the season, and seeing as they have gone and kicked on at the top it’s going to be another tricky afternoon.
Enjoy the entertainment Gav

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season
ww.sheffieldfc.com
Marske United were formed by members of Marske Cricket Club in 1956, initially playing in the Cleveland League and later the South Bank League. In 1976 they stepped up to the Teesside League, which they won in both the 1980/81, also lifting the North Riding County Cup, and 1984/85 seasons, after the latter of those moving up to the Wearside League. In their first season in the new league they finished 7th, and once again won the North Riding County Cup, and were generally well placed in the top half of the table for the next several years. They finished as runners-up in both 1994 and 1995, denied the title only by a 3-point deduction in the first of those and with success in both the North Riding Senior and Wearside League Cups in the latter. They finally went one step further in the following season to be crowned as Wearside League champions, this time with the help of a points deduction for their closest rivals, also retaining the League Cup. After one further season, again finishing as runners-up, they were promoted to Division 2 of the Northern League.
In S18 Today...
Marske United
Immediate promotion followed, finishing 3rd in Division 2, and after a year to settle at the higher level United ended the next 3 seasons in the top 4. During the period they also reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Vase before results tailed away for a while and they spent 7 seasons back in Division 2 before returning to the top flight of the league, again reaching the last 8 of the Vase in 2009. Promoted back to Division 1 in 2011 they struggled for a while but a League Cup win and a run to the final Qualifying Round of the FA Cup in 2013/14 marked the start of a successful period. In 2015 they won the Northern League, were runners-up the following year and last season won the title for a second time, losing just 4 games and earning promotion to the NPL, and negotiated 8 rounds to reach the Semi Finals of the FA Vase. After losing 2-0 at home to Northern League rivals Stockton Town they fought back strongly to win the second leg away from home but fell just short and went out 3-2 on aggregate. Playing at the highest level in their history this season began in fine style, for them if not for us, by beating Sheffi eld 4-0 on the opening day. After an even opening period Craig Gott opened the scoring and after the break they took control with further strikes from Jamie Owens, with 2, and Andrew May. Frickley provided sterner opposition in their next game but a 1-2 reverse away to many people’s title favourites, and another goal for Gott, showed that they have quickly acclimatised to the new league. A 1-0 FA Cup exit away to Morpeth Town, another side to have stepped up to the NPL from the Northern League and started well, doesn’t appear to have knocked their confidence as they have bounced back with league victories over Pickering Town and at Spalding, winning both 2-0, since. In those games Gott, Owen & May have all hit the back of the net again and they arrive here today 2nd in the table, having conceded less than anyone else in the division and looking well set to make a serious push for a second consecutive promotion at this early stage of the season.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season
History Corner With Andy Dixon
ww.sheffieldfc.com
Another one of those tricky history columns when trying to find previous games between the sides in our archives and finding just the one. Particularly given that it came just 3 weeks ago so it’s not diffi cult for anyone to remember just what happened – in brief, we lost 4-0!
Sheffi eld do have a long history of travelling to the northeast to play fixtures though, dating back to 1885. Easter tours were a regular feature of Club ’s season for much of the last decade and a half of the 19th century, originally seeing a trip towards the seaside destinations on the North Sea coastline. In 1885 Club sent a side to play 3 games in 4 days, beating Redcar 3 -1, losing to Middlesbrough and then drawing 2-2 against Sunderland. It seemed to capture the imagination of the locals with a crowd of around 2,000 at Middlesbrough and good turnouts reported for the other fixtures also. The feeling doesn ’t seem to have been reciprocated in Sheffi eld however, with a visit from Redcar at the start of the following season attracting an attendance described as “but small”, with Club winning 3-0. The following year another series of games were played over Easter and proved even more successful than before, this time providing a hat-trick of victories for Sheffi eld as they beat Redcar, Darlington and Sunderland, roughly 3,000 in attendance for the latter of those. A further game also took place against Sunderland later in 1886, which Club lost 2-1. Club certainly took the tours seriously with a strong squad travelling, including strikers George Aizlewood and Daff Davy, who netted 5 between them in the games, and other legendary names such as William Beardshaw and brothers Harry & Thomas Willey. The 1887 tour was expanded to take in 4 matches in just 5 days. A good crowd watched Club draw 1 -1 at Redcar on Good Friday before losing at Middlesbrough the following day. Middlesbrough were rewarded for fielding their strongest side with the visitors reported as playing “loosely in the first half”! After the break however the report states that “they gave a good exhibition of the combination and passing game, and reminded some of the older devotees of football on the ground of the palmy days of the Sheffi eld club”! After a rest-day Sheffi eld came back refreshed and won 2-1 at Sunderland, a reported crowd of about 7,000 watching the fixture, and ended the tour by beating Darlington 4-1. Easter certainly seemed to bring out the best in Aizlewood who helped himself to more goals on his travels, including a double in the win at Darlington where he beat their keeper Arthur Wharton, later to become the world’s first black professional footballer! The next year’s schedule was even more hectic, this time 5 games in just 6 days with visits to Redcar, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Darlington and Scarborough. The first, played in front of a small turnout at a rainy Redcar Racecourse, saw the home side start both halves strongly before going down 4-0 against a stronger Sheffi eld side. The following day the ‘Blades’, as Club, and in fact most Sheffi eld sides, were known as by many at that time, lost 1-0 on a soggy pitch at Linthorpe Road in Middlesbrough. After the Easter Sunday rest day hopes were high of a repeat of the previous year’s victory against Sunderland but this time the home side, cheered on by a crowd of roughly 10,000, won with some ease by a 4-0 score. There were large crowds watching for the final two games also as Club lost 2 -1 at Darlington, Arthur Wharton once again in goals for the home side, before a good win for Sheffi eld at Scarborough, despite some understandably tired legs! At the start of the 1888/89 season Club were knocked out of the FA Cup by a side from Middlesbrough, despite winning the first game! After Club won 3-2 in Sheffi eld South Bank protested that “the field of play was not properly fenced, and that the spectators interfered with the play ”! A replay was ordered, and the game went to extra time before a tiring visiting side crumbled late on to lose 4 -0. There were two more Easter tours to the area, in 1889 and 1890. In the first of those years Sheffi eld began with a narrow defeat away to Stockton and then a 3-3 draw at Middlesbrough, in front of another good crowd. The public in Sunderland once again turned out in big numbers for the Easter Monday clash between the clubs, where they saw their side come out victorious by 2 goals to 1. Sheffield finished the tour with two victories in the following 2 days as they beat Darlington 3-0 and then Aizlewood was once again on the scoresheet in their 2-1 success against a Scarborough & District side. The final northeast tour, in 1890, was a reduced one although clearly still of interest to many with the crowd which witnessed a 1-1 draw at Stockton, on Good Friday, described as “immense”. The following day Sheffi eld won 3-1 against Whitby and then ended the tour by beating Darlington 4-2 on Easter Monday, fittingly George Aizlewood grabbing a hat-trick in that win. Easter tours continued for Sheffi eld, but they now tended to travel down south, playing against sides such as Gloucestershire, Somerset, Swindon and Hastings & St. Leonards. There have been plenty of other games against sides from the northeast region since though and most recently league fixtures against Scarborough Athletic in 2013/14 and NPL League Cup clashes with both Boro and Whitby.

Sheffield FC 5 Pontefract Colls 3 Evo-Stik East Division Saturday 01/09/18 Attendance: 283
Sheffield FC grabbed their first win of the season, writes Stuart James, as they ran out 5-3 winners in an entertainment packed thriller against Pontefract Collieries. Marc Newsham led the way with two goals for Club, whilst Mitch Dunne, Andrew Gascoigne and Jamie Yates added to the tally, with Eli Hey, Jack Greenough and Jamie Picton replying for the visitors. It was a lively start to the game that set the pace for the next ninety minutes, with the visitors testing the Sheffield defence early on, and Ross Durrant having to be alert to tip an Andrew Gascoigne header over to avoid an owngoal. At the other end Charlie Wakefield caused issues, whilst Mitch Dunne was a problem with his pace, and went close with a shot that was driven inches wide. Sheffield took the lead on 17 minutes, as James Gregory burst down the left to cross a deep ball, with Marc Newsham diving to head home. On 23 minutes it was 2-0, again Gregory making the work on the left, finding Mitchell Dunne in the middle who side-footed home. Two minutes later Colls pulled one back, a penalty awarded for a trip in the box, Eli Hey driving home. Club pressed to regain the two goal advantage, Newsham again going close, with both Dunne and Gregory adding to the visitors’ worries. On 36 minutes Ponte levelled, Cody Cromack crossing into the mix, and Jack Greenhough jumping highest to loop a header over the keeper. The lead could and probably should have swung the visitors’ way, as first they hit the bar, and moments after Hey missed a sitter from five yards out.

It took less than a minute after the restart for Club to get back in front, Charlie Wakefield crossing from the left, with Jamie Yates heading in. Club could have extended their lead, as Gregory once again tormented the defence, with Newsham blasting an effort over the bar. Pontefract levelled once again on 65 minutes, Conner Smythe sending a freekick in, and Jake Picton flicking a header into the net. The lead swung to the home side yet again, after Jamie Williams wrestled James Gregory to the ground, Andrew Gascoigne dispatching a beauty of a free-kick to the top corner. The chances kept coming at both ends, and it seemed that there would be at least another goal in the contest, with the next goal deciding the result. As it turned out it was Club that wrapped things up three minutes from time, Dunne doing the hard work on the right hand side, setting up a simple tapin for Newsham to the delight of the home fans. Sadly things were soured unnecessarily as there was an altercation in the middle of the park, which saw Vaughan Redford shown a red card for being the instigator, followed immediately by a scuffle between the benches that saw one from each coaching staff shown a red card also. There was still time for Andrew Gascoigne to go close, meaning Sheffield were able to cruise to the full time whistle without issues, and deservedly get the first win of the season under their belt.

Sheffield FC 2 Sheffield United 11 Matt Roney Testimonial Tuesday 04/09/18 Attendance: “A sizeable muster” It was a packed out Home of Football that saw Sheffield FC’s record appearance holder Matt Roney honoured for his service to The World’s First Football Club, as Chris Wilder brought a strong Sheffield United side to S18, keeping a promise made to the lifelong Blades’ supporter.
There were many who headed to Dronfield with the promise of a first appearance after long term injury of Paul Coutts, and they weren’t to be disappointed, as he played 60 minutes along with the likes of Billy Sharp, Mark Duffy and new loanee Marvin Johnson. United raced into a 5-1 half time lead, as Johnson scored with his virtual first touch as a Blades’ player, with Jordan Doherty making it 2-0 as he headed in Johnson's cross. Club pulled one back when Simon Moore made a hash of punching a corner and James Gregory turned in, The third came when Doherty put a cross in that was turned in by James Kay for an own goal. Duffy scored a smart goal to make it 4-1 and then Sharp set him up with a run though and unselfish lay off for a tap in goal for Duffy to make it 5-1. After the break United made it six through David McGoldrick, and after guest keeper Matt Duke made two or three stunning saves, before Matt Duke, Derek Geary, Rob Kozluk and Michael Brown came on, making guest appearances against the Blades before Callam Hallam scored a well-taken goal to make it 7-1.
Wednesdayite Michael Vaughan came on for Club, to boos from the United faithful, before Hallam scored another goal and then three more quick goals at point blank range from McGoldrick saw him complete his hat trick and then his fourth and make it 11-1. Vaughan played pantomime villain to the full in the last minute, falling dramatically in the box from a challenge from Richard Stearman, on came man of the moment Roney to send ex-Clubbie Jake Eastwood the wrong way to finish 11-2. "It's been brilliant," Roney said. "I just want to thank everyone who has been a part of it and also everyone connected with Sheffield United for agreeing to come and putting the side out that they did."

League Review

Stamford AFC and Ossett United remain unbeaten in Evo-Stik League East – but neither of them were able to win on Saturday, writes Steve Whitney.
With Steve Whitney Stamford dropped their first points in an
amazing 4-4 draw at the Zeeco Stadium against win-less Cleethorpes Town. Stamford took an early sixth minute lead through Jordan Cooke, only for Jonathan Oglesby to level on 23 minutes. Three minutes later, Joe Burgess restored the Daniels lead and an own goal from Mark Gray five minutes later gave them a 3-1 cushion at the break. Lewis Collins reduced the arrears on 66 minutes, only for Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson to restore Stamford`s two-goal cushion three minutes later. Oglesby`s second made it 3-4 on 74 minutes and Stamford`s Rob Morgan was sent-off for two yellows in quick succession in the 83rd minute. Three minutes later, Scott Vernon equalised from the penalty spot and Cleethorpes held on, despite also going down to ten-men in stoppage time when sub Oli Donald was sent-off. Newly-merged Ossett United shared a 3-3 draw at Ingfield against Belper Town. Nathan Curtis gave the Nailers a 15th minute lead that Corey Gregory cancelled out within three minutes. Danny South had the visitors back in front against one of his former clubs on 33 minutes and it didn't look good for United when Rikki Paylor added Belper's fourth five minutes before the break. But Tom Corner on 63 minutes and then a stoppage time Jack Vann equaliser salvaged a point and kept Ossett unbeaten. Frickley Athletic suffered their first defeat, 3-2 at Westfield Lane against new boys AFC Mansfield. It was some comeback from the visitors after trailing to goals from Jacob Hazel after seven minutes and Jack Burton after 14 minutes. Lynton Karkach bagged a brace for Mansfield in the 49th and 65th minutes, with Brad Wells winning it four minutes later. Loughborough Dynamo recorded their first win of the new season. Dynamo beat Pickering Town 4-2 at home – the Pikes' fourth successive defeat. The hosts led 3-0 at the break with goals from Josh Riley, a Karl Demidh penalty and another on 43 minutes. The Pikes responded with two goals in a minute just after the break from Billy Logan and a Ryan Blott spot-kick, but a fourth in the fourth minute of stoppage time from Jordan Wilson made sure for Dynamo. Two other new Evo-Stik League sides met with Morpeth Town hammering Wisbech Town 5-2 in the north-east. The Fenmen led through Layton Maddison`s 18th minute effort before a Nick Jackson own goal cancelled their advantage out right on the stroke of half-time. But five minutes after the break, Tom Potter put Morpeth ahead. Then Julian Petrache, Stephen Forster and Liam Henderson stretched their advantage to 5-1 by the 84th minute, rendering Danny Setchell's 87th minute reply as just a consolation. Morpeth's former Ebac Northern League rivals Marske United won 2-0 at Wisbech`s neighbours Spalding United, thanks to Craig Gott after 10 minutes and Damien Stevens on 67 minutes. There was a back-to-back win for Gresley FC, 2-1 at The Moat against Tadcaster Albion, thanks to a brace of penalties converted by Martyn Smyth in the 42nd and 85th minutes – Taddy replying through Chris Howarth three minutes into stoppage time. There was a second win too for Brighouse Town, 2-1 at Carlton Town, courtesy of a Kieran Walker own goal in the first half and a late Gabriel Johnson effort nine minutes from time after Ben Hutchinson had equalised five minutes after the opener. Lincoln United's third win came 2-1 at Ashby Avenue against Stocksbridge Park Steels, with Kevin Hemagou after just two minutes and a Paul Grimes spot-kick six minutes from time outgunning Liam McFadyen's reply five minutes into the second half.

By Car Take M180 towards Cleethorpes and Grimsby, continuing onto A180, as far as Lockhill roundabout (signposted A16 Grimsby Town Centre) turning right onto A16 past the Burger King. Follow A16 as far as A46 crossroads, signposted Cleethorpes (A1098) at junction just before lights, turning left onto Weelsby Road. Continue along here, past first roundabout, the ground is set back on the left hand side, with parking on the field area.
From Home of Football : 1 hour 40 mins - From Sheffield Centre: 1 hour 30 mins
By Public Transport Nearest Station: Cleethorpes 1m. Bus 4 from Sea Road (alongside station), every 60 minutes, alight at Clee Crescent, 9 minutes walk along Weelsby Road. Ground on right hand side.
What to Expect Brand new ground which is functional - two prefab stands (one on halfway and one behind the near goal) and a prefab terrace at the far end. Hot food and drink is served from a separate area in the clubhouse, where the gents toilet has an amusing mural to gaze at while stood there. Plenty of parking on site, mostly on the large field next to the main car park.

Awaydays Frickley Athletic
Westfield Lane, South Elmsall, Pontefract, West Yorkshire, WF9 2EQ Telephone: 01977 642 460 nd Saturday 22 September 2018 (KO 3:00)
By Car The best way is to approach this from the M18 and A1 - taking junction 38. From the A1 turn off onto the A638, towards Wakefield. At the second roundabout turn left onto the B6474 towards South Elmsall. Turn left at the traffic lights and then turn right at the T-junction to stay on the B6474. Go over the railway line and turn right at the bottom of the road and then immediately left up Westfield Lane. The ground is signposted on the left after about ½ mile. Get there early and there is parking available pretty close to the ground, leave it too late (or if the big numbers turn up) then I'm afraid it is street parking around the warren of roads around Westfield Lane.
From Home of Football : 1 hour
-
From Sheffield Centre: 50 mins *
By Public Transport Nearest Station: South Elmsall ½m. Up Station Approach and Station Road, right into Barnsley Road, left into Westfield Lane, and entrance to ground is on left; ground is beyond cricket ground. (The first football ground you come to is not the one; continue past Oxford Street).
What to Expect This is what you might call a "traditional" nonleague ground - none of your new builds here! Despite its lived in look, it is one of my favourites. The ground is dominated by the elevated main stand and the iconic slag heap opposite! There are plenty of good viewing points, with covered standing along the far touchline, behind both goals are areas of uncovered terracing. All mod-cons are catered for here - there is a nice little clubhouse that opens before and after the game, a decent club shop for all you souvenir hunters, and food available from the snack bar which opens thirty minutes before the game.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season
Chaplain’s Corner Pick Yourself Up
ww.sheffieldfc.com
During our journey through life we experience many things and, sadly, no one is immune to difficult times and having to work through disappointments along the way. The encouraging thing about disappointments are that we must have had hopes and expectations for us to feel disappointed, or let down Perhaps some of us are dealing with disappointment right now, following the start to our season, I certainly watched the disappointment on the players faces on Tuesday night as they left the pitch.
Maybe you’ve been let down, something has occurred which was out of your control or something has not worked out the way you wanted or hoped for. The last thing you want to hear is a simple platitude like ‘don’t worry it will all be ok’ or ‘pull yourself together’ which, if I’m honest, always makes me bite my bottom lip and just be gracious in my response. I know they have been trying to help, but I would much prefer them not to have said anything and just offered a listening ear and a supporting look. Fortunately, it’s not all gloom and doom because our disappointments will have come about because we had high hopes and expectations. I would want to encourage you to still to hope and have high expectations rather than lower them. Yes, if your expectations are low you probably will have less disappointments and what you do experience won’t be as crushing; if you are hopeless your hope can’t be crushed. But do we really want to live a life without hope? I want to still be hoping and expecting things to work out through the hard work I put in, support of friends and loved ones and my faith. I know I would not be happier if my expectation of everything in my life was that it would go pear shaped all the time and be negative. I have high hopes for this season and remain positive that the results will come good for us! I love what Michael J Fox said: “There’s always failure, and there’s always disappointment, and there’s always loss. But the secret is learning from the loss and realising that none of those holes are vacuums”. Today, I’m choosing to pick myself up, dust myself down and begin to walk forwards again; I hope you can do the same? Enjoy the game. Chaplain Chris

Around The Club
From India With Love
ww.sheffieldfc.com
Sheffield FC had an unexpected visitor last Saturday, as a young gentleman representing the Oldest Club in India Mohan Bogan - dropped in to S18 to see The World’s First take on Pontefract Collieries at the Home of Football.
Sarthak Mondal, a Sports Business Management Student at Sheffield Hallam - and also joint manager at Sharrow United - originally from Kolkata, is a lifelong supporter of Mohan Bogan and took the opportunity to take part in a ceremonial shirt swap between the two clubs. Club Chairman Richard Tims, who visited in 2010, also recorded a video message to the President of the Calcutta cub, inviting them to join the Club of Pioneers.

Man of The Match
While Sarthak was with us at the game, we thought we’d put him to good use and have him present the Thornbridge Brewery Man-of-the-Match award. Several were in contention for the award, however in the end it went to two goal striking hero Marc Newsham, who proved to be a worthy and popular winner. Newie is pictured receiving the award from Sarthak, with assistance from our “Mr Chairman Junior” Freddie Tims. Congratulations Marc, and many thanks once again to Sarthak Mondal for being a great sport and a great ambassador to both Mohan Bogan and Sharrow United Football Clubs.

Stoke City 3 Sheffield FC 0 FA Women’s National League Cup Sunday 02/09/18
Three second half goals were enough to put Northern Premier Division table toppers, Stoke City, into the next round of the FA Women’s National League Cup at the expense of Sheffield FC with two goals from Hannah Keryakoplis either side of Cassie Hyde’s strike. The game started in a flurry with Stoke looking to continue on their rich vein of form, having picked up two wins from their previous two games. The hosts made their intentions clear early doors, feeding the strikers at any opportunity and continually asking questions of the Sheffield defence. Keryakoplis went close with a ball sent over the back line, but the striker couldn’t guide the bounce goal wards. Strike partner, Ashleigh Hayes, was next to knock at the door when a misplaced back pass allowed the forward the opportunity, but Club keeper Lauren Santoro stood firm to keep the scores level. Millee Clarke almost caught the Stoke defence unawares when her cross almost looped in at the back post, but the Stoke keeper, Stacey Wright, had other ideas and managed to prevent a Club lead with a good save. As the half wore on chances, were limited in spite of Stoke’s best intentions to feed their front two, and the teams went into the break on equal terms. After the break, it was Sheffield who started the brighter, moving the ball well and finding space to play. Immediately from the restart, Millee Clarke was in behind with just City’s keeper to beat, but her attempted lob drifted inches wide of the onrushing keeper. In spite of the bright start, Sheffield were not able to capitalise, and 10 minutes in, it was Stoke who would strike first. Faye McCoy profited from a defensive error and powered an effort goalward with Santoro saving onto the post, but unfortunately for Club, Hannah Keryakoplis was unopposed and on hand to volley home from ten yards and 1-0 to Stoke. With the goal behind them, the momentum was well and truly with the hosts, and it was not long before one became two. A corner quickly turned into a goal mouth scramble and centre half Cassie Hyde was on hand at the front post to poke home for 2-0. Stoke City: Wright, Bowyer, The game would be put to bed with just over 15 minutes remaining when a Stoke counter-attack would see Keryakoplis fed goalwards where she was able to wrong foot both the Sheffield centre half and keeper and slot home inside the near post. Sheffield didn’t roll over and battled hard to the end, still looking to salvage something from the game. Jade Butcher had a golden opportunity with five minutes to go, climbing highest to get on the end of a Molly Johnson corner delivery, but the header was too close to Wright who made a strong save to preserve her team’s clean sheet.

James Hastings – Midfield “Hasto” is yet another who has developed through the Sheffield FC Foundation Scholarship programmes, as well as performing in the WVH North Midlands League last season. Classy on the ball, and dangerous from the dead-ball. Anthony Mackie – Midfield Anthony was at Barnsley Academy and gained plenty of experience at Evo-Stik league football in spells at Goole AFC and latterly at Ossett Town. Capable of scoring goals, Anthony can play several positions and has resisted other offers to make the move to The Club. Matt Roney – Midfield The on-field Mr Sheffield FC if ever there is one, having served the World’s First Football Club in nearly 500 appearances, since joining Club as a fresh-faced youngster from local rivals Hallam FC. Still able to turn a game and has been known to chip in with the odd goal now and again.
Sam Wright – Midfield Central midfielder Sam also joined us from Ossett Town, and we are looking forward to seeing him in the thick of the action next season breaking up opposition play and setting up chances for our own strikers. Jamie Yates – Midfield Jamie is a lively, tricky winger whose former clubs include Rotherham United, Boston United, Gainsborough Trinity and Matlock Town. Jamie can play on either wing and worked his way through the Rotherham United youth setup before playing 34 league games for the club. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

EARLY FOOTBALL Versions of football evolved in many early civilisations, example of these can be found in ancient China, Greece and Rome. In England the original games were played between villages in fields and streets. This ‘Mob Football’ involved hundreds of players and was little more than prolonged and violent street battles. During the 19th century a more refined version of the game grew in popularity within the public schools and universities, each playing to their own sets of rules. THE BIRTH OF SHEFFIELD FOOT BALL CLUB. During the 1850s the enthusiasm and influence of ex-public school and university students spread the popularity of the game around Sheffield. In the summer of 1857 William Prest and Nathaniel Creswick agreed that the game would be a splendid candidate for organised sport during the winter months. The pair wrote to the Public Schools for information, regarding their varying rules, with the aim of drawing up a set of laws embodying the best points from each. On October 24th, 1857, the world’s first football club was born in a greenhouse, at the home of Harry Chambers. Chambers went on to become one of the club’s greatest players, and Secretary, in a career that spanned over 40 years. Among the first rules drawn up were laws asserting that “no hacking or tripping up is fair under any circumstances”, “no player may be held or pulled over” and “it is not lawful to take the ball off the ground [using hands]”. Upon the formation of the Football Association in 1863, Sheffield Club’s insistence on these laws began the evolution into the game we recognise globally today. Heading, solid crossbars, corner kicks, free-kicks for fouls, throw-ins, a half-time change of ends and floodlit matches can all be traced to the innovators of Sheffield F.C.! EARLY YEARS Initially early matches, such as Married men v Unmarried, had to be played between Club members. Records also show games against local army sides. Following victory over the 58 th Army Regiment in 1860 a local report stated that, “most of the officers were adepts at the game, having, in their younger days, played in the public school matches, and the victory of the civilians was quite unexpected.” Following the birth of Hallam F.C., the world’s first inter-club game took place on Boxing Day in 1860. The match “was conducted with good temper and in a friendly spirit”, concluding in a 2-0 win for Sheffield. For several years all matches were played locally, against a rising number of new sides, before the first ‘out of town’ match was played in Nottinghamshire in 1865. In 1866 the first game limited to a length of 90 minutes was played at Battersea Park against London. The FA Cup was founded in 1871 and in its third season Sheffield became the first northern side to take part. They succeeded in reaching the quarter finals in this and two further seasons also, 1876 and 1878. 1872 saw the first international game, between England and Scotland in Glasgow, with Sheffield’s Charles Clegg playing for the England side. Clegg would later go on to be Chairman, and President, of the FA and receive a knighthood for his services to the game.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

From the 1880s onwards the rise of professionalism and Sheffield Club’s firm insistence of retaining their amateur status saw them overtaken and overshadowed by other sides in the area. During these years the very survival of the club owed much to the leadership of former players Harry Chambers and Harry Broughton Willey. After the death of the latter in 1933 the minutes stated that “Mr H.B. Willey for years had carried the Club on his back, administratively and financially, making up a yearly deficit from his own pocket.” It wasn’t all doom and gloom though! In fact Sheffield enjoyed possibly their greatest hour in 1904 when they won the Amateur Cup, beating Ealing 3-1 at Valley Parade, Bradford. YORKSHIRE LEAGUE 1949 brought admission to the Yorkshire League and a resurgence, which saw the side promoted to Division One in their third season and reach the League Cup final in 1953. In 1957 they celebrated their Centenary year and reached their first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup final in 1962. The 1950s also saw the emergence of the Club’s greatest legend with forward Geoff Robinson (above) scoring 232 goals over 216 appearances. After a period of yo-yoing between divisions the 1977 side were crowned Division Two Champions and reached that season’s FA Vase final at Wembley. They established themselves as a top division side in the Yorkshire League, lifting the League Cup in 1978, before joining the newly founded Northern Counties East League in 1982. NORTHERN COUNTIES LEAGUE The Division One title was won in both 1989 and 1991 and a first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup win came in 1994. In 2001 the club acquired a permanent ground, for the first time, when moving to its current home. After the turn of the century the side began to consistently challenge for promotion, winning both the League Cup and Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup on two occasions. The 2006/07 season ended with a 2 nd place finish and promotion to the Northern Premier League. NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE The side made an instant impact in reaching the 2008 play-off final, narrowly losing only on penalties. That first season also saw games against Inter Milan and Ajax at Bramall Lane, as part of the 150th birthday celebrations, and a few years later a win at Hallam’s Sandygate ground to mark the anniversary of the first inter-club match. Sheffield have twice more been involved in the season ending play-offs and lifted the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup on two further occasions also. Manager Gavin Smith took over in May 2018, and hopes are high for 2018/19 of making good progress from last season’s disappointing 17th place finish. In addition the SFC Ladies’ team have now risen from the lowest rung of women’s football, to play alongside the elite of the game in the FA Women’s National League. Sheffield Futsal Club were again amongst the country’s leading sides, the Under 19s won the League Cup and the newly formed Sheffield FC Veterans (with Jim Fern scoring, right) went to the San Siro Stadium in Milan to win the ACLI Invitational Trophy as the club continues to go from strength to strength in the grass roots game in its 161st season.
