Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Welcome... Manager’s Notes

ww.sheffieldfc.com

On behalf of everyone at Sheffi eld FC, I’d like to welcome you to this afternoon’s FA Women’s National League match against our visitors, Bradford City WFC. It’s good to be able to welcome back a club whom we have had a long-standing relationship with, so we hope that all the staff, players and supporters of Bradford enjoy their day here. After the disappointment of exiting the League Cup last Sunday, it’s important we focus and pull that bit closer together – regardless of results, it’s vital to keep working hard and moving forward.

This week, that focus is Bradford City and how we can be the best that we possibly can to earn three points. Bradford are in a similar position to ourselves in the league, so I fully expect them to travel to us looking for maximum points. They have a pretty big squad and some good young players who I ’ve either had the pleasure of working with or come up against previously, so I ’m interested to see how they all work together under the guidance of new manager Mark Brier. What we do know is they’ll be organised and honest in their approach. The Bradford teams of the past have always had an edge about them, and we expect the same this time round. Add to that the fearless youthfulness they have in the forward areas, and we know it’ll be a tough game this afternoon. As for ourselves, we will try to ask questions of them – we have some quality in the ranks and it’s only a matter of time before it clicks together for the group. We’ve shown ourselves to be adaptable and smart, and have not backed down regardless of how tough things get, traits that will set us in good stead as we grow throughout the season. Competition is high and everyone knows they have to be at their best if they ’re going to represent Sheffi eld FC at a senior level, regardless of age, experience or reputation. Putting points on the board at this stage of the season is important, and we’ll be doing everything in our power to ensure the three points stay in Sheffi eld this afternoon – and we hope, as supporters of Sheffi eld FC, you will do your bit in getting behind the team. Thanks again for your support.

In S18 Today... Bradford City Ladies

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Founded in 1988 under the auspices of Bradford City's Football in the Community scheme and linking up with local youth centres already involved in training girls, the club became founder members of the Yorkshire and Humberside WFL the following year, winning promotion from Division Two in their first season. After success at local level, the club won promotion into the FA Women's Premier League Northern Division in 1995/96, and earned a second successive promotion in 1996/97, into the then top level of women's football in England, the FA WPL National Division.

In 1997/98, Bradford just managed to avoid relegation by finishing in eighth place, but reached the semi–final of the FA Women's Premier League Cup, losing on penalties to eventual winners Arsenal after a 2–2 draw, and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Women’s Cup. However, Bradford was to drop out of the National Division the following season 1998/99, and suffered a further relegation in 1999/00 into the Northern Combination Women's Football League. Following a further relegation, fortunes began to improve as the Club won the County Cup in 2005/06, and were crowned champions of the North East Regional WFL Premier Division in 2006/07, the same season they also finished runners up in the League Cup. City then began another growth period, seeing league title success at reserve team level in the West Riding County WFL in 2007/08 and the following season. Their Girls U16s team was also flourishing at this time, whilst the first team continued to ply their trade in the Northern Combination WFL. In 2010/11, City were semi-finalists in the very competitive West Riding County Cup, and went one better the following season as momentum gathered, leading up to the Club gaining promotion back to the FA Women's Premier League for the start of the 2013/2014 season thanks to a third place finish behind champions South Durham & Cestria (who were accepted into the FA WSL), and second placed Chorley who declined promotion. An excellent third place finish in 2013/14 was followed up by two more top five finishes, with City finishing in eighth spot over the past two seasons. The Bantams won the West Riding County Cup for four successive seasons before missing out in the final last season to Guiseley Vixens. The last league meeting back in November 2014 was a classic encounter with Sheffield FC taking an early lead through Jodie Michalska and Becky Lee, but Bradford fighting back thanks to a superb 35-yard free-kick from Charlotte Stuart. Suzanne Davies’ goal early in the second half seemed to have settled things, but a Molly Sharpe strike 15 minutes before the end made for a classic nail-biting finish. Photos courtesy of Paul Linton

Stoke City 3 Sheffield FC 0 FA Women’s National League Cup Community Drive, Smallthorne Sunday, 2nd September 2018 Three second half goals were enough to put Northern Premier Division table toppers, Stoke City, into the next round of the FA Women’s National League Cup at the expense of Sheffield FC with two goals from Hannah Keryakoplis either side of Cassie Hyde’s strike. The game started in a flurry with Stoke looking to continue on their rich vein of form, having picked up two wins from their previous two games. The hosts made their intentions clear early doors, feeding the strikers at any opportunity and continually asking questions of the Sheffield defence.

Keryakoplis went close with a ball sent over the back line, but the striker couldn’t guide the bounce goal wards. Strike partner, Ashleigh Hayes, was next to knock at the door when a misplaced back pass allowed the forward the opportunity, but Club keeper Lauren Santoro stood firm to keep the scores level. Millee Clarke almost caught the Stoke defence unawares when her cross almost looped in at the back post, but the Stoke keeper, Stacey Wright, had other ideas and managed to prevent a Club lead with a good save.

As the half wore on chances, were limited in spite of Stoke’s best intentions to feed their front two, and the teams went into the break on equal terms. After the break, it was Sheffield who started the brighter, moving the ball well and finding space to play. Immediately from the restart, Millee Clarke was in behind with just City’s keeper to beat, but her attempted lob drifted inches wide of the onrushing keeper.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

In spite of the bright start, Sheffield were not able to capitalise, and 10 minutes in, it was Stoke who would strike first. Faye McCoy profited from a defensive error and powered an effort goalward with Santoro saving onto the post, but unfortunately for Club, Hannah Keryakoplis was unopposed and on hand to volley home from ten yards and 1-0 to Stoke.

With the goal behind them, the momentum was well and truly with the hosts, and it was not long before one became two. A corner quickly turned into a goal mouth scramble and centre half Cassie Hyde was on hand at the front post to poke home for 2-0. The game would be put to bed with just over 15 minutes remaining when a Stoke counter-attack would see Keryakoplis fed goalwards where she was able to wrong foot both the Sheffield centre half and keeper and slot home inside the near post. Sheffield didn’t roll over and battled hard to the end, still looking to salvage something from the game. Jade Butcher had a golden opportunity with five minutes to go, climbing highest to get on the end of a Molly Johnson corner delivery, but the header was too close to Wright who made a strong save to preserve her team’s clean sheet. Kyle O’Reilly, Sheffield’s manager, provided his thoughts after the match: “Overall, we can’t have too many grumbles at the score line today. We knew exactly what to expect from Stoke, but we started sloppily and could have been a couple of goals down early on. Thankfully, we weathered the storm and got in at half-time on level terms.” “Second half, we started well, seemed much more relaxed on the ball and, as a result, found ourselves playing higher up the pitch. At times, we put some good stuff together, but not consistently enough to really ask many questions of our opponents. In the end, Stoke’s persistence paid off and they rightfully move into the next round, and we wish them well in that.” Photos courtesy of Paula Johnson

FA Women’s National League Cup Determining Round Review Week 1 Review

All 72 FA Women’s National League clubs were in action last Sunday in the Determining Round of the League Cup. There was mixed success for the Northern Premier Division clubs with Bradford City, Middlesbrough and Sheffield all exiting at the hands of other Northern Premier teams, whilst Doncaster Rovers Belles slipped out to Northern Division One side, Chorley. Blackburn Rovers 3-3 Liverpool Feds (Rovers won 5-4 on penalties) The current holders, Blackburn Rovers, were on the verge of going out of this season’s League Cup at the first hurdle against Liverpool Feds, but two goals in the final 13 minutes of the first 90 minutes by former Sheffield FC striker Beth Donoghue, pushed the game into extra time for ten-man Rovers who’d seen Natasha Fenton sent off just past the hour mark. No goals were added, so a penalty shoot-out followed with Rovers emerging as winners 5-4. Doncaster Rovers Belles 2-2 Chorley (Chorley won 4-3 on penalties) Things could hardly have been tighter in this tie which went right to the wire. Belles’ returning captain Izzy Whittle out her side level twice, her second goal in the dying seconds of the 90 minutes to force extra time. But her good fortune was to eventually run out, as she was one of two Belles’ players to miss penalties in the shoot-out which saw Northern Division One side Chorley record a famous victory.

Hull City 2-1 Bradford City A scrappy affair, largely due to the referee, ended 2-1 to the hosts who progressed thanks to a second half winner by Becky Beech. The hosts went ahead midway through the first half when Hope Knight was brought down in the box by a Bradford defender, the Hull forward dusting herself off to dispatch the penalty past Jasmine Lacey in the visitor’s goal. But Bradford drew level just before half-time when a through ball split the Tigresses defence and Keegan Lambert (pictured) made no mistake to slot the ball into the back of the net. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Hull started the second half well and restored their lead after 15 minutes when Knight’s cross picked out Beech in the centre of the box and the experienced striker buried it to give City Ladies a 2-1 lead, and ultimately the win. Huddersfield Town 3-0 Middlesbrough The third all-Northern Premier Division tie saw hosts Huddersfield Town continue their fine start to the season with a 3-0 win over Middlesbrough. A tight first half saw the deadlock broke by Britanny Sanderson after just 12 minutes, and that’s how things remained until player of the match Sarah Danby pretty much tied things up on 70 minutes. The Terriers made absolutely sure two minutes from time when Sanderson bagged her second of the game. Morecambe 0-5 Sunderland It took just five minutes for Sunderland to open the scoring against lower ranked opponents Morecambe as Emily Hutchinson converted Danielle Brown’s cross. It was generally one-way traffic from that point on as Keira Ramshaw (pictured) scored a fine individual goal to make it 2-0 before the break.

Sunderland exploited gaps in the Morecambe defence throughout the second half which could have rendered much more than the three goals it did: Bridget Galloway, Louise Griffiths and Georgia Gibson adding the goals for a fine Sunderland win. Elsewhere, Fylde were the biggest winners of the round, thumping Burton Albion 9-0 to advance to the next stage, the win including a hat-trick by new striker Nikki Berko. There was also a hat-trick for Nottingham Forest’s Katie Middleton as they eased past The New Saints 3 -0, and Guiseley Vixens enjoyed their first win of the season beating Chester-LeStreet 4-2 at Nethermoor. All the Determining Round losers, which includes Sheffield FC, go into the hat for the Plate competition, the first round (yet to be drawn) of which will be held on Sunday 23 September. ww.sheffieldfc.com

FAThis Women’s National League Weekend’s Fixtures After a week-end of League Cup fixtures, it’s back to the bread and butter of the Northern Premier Division this Sunday with the following fixtures taking place.

Match of The Week Derby County v Nottingham Forest The Midlands rivals have both had excellent unbeaten starts to the 2018/19 season, in both league and Cup, but surely something has to give in this first meeting of the sides this season. Much has changed at Derby County. Financial support from the men’s club, a new head coach in Sam Griffiths , and plenty of new signings has turned Derby from a mid-table side into one that can and should challenge this season. Although unbeaten in three matches, they have yet to face a side firing on all cylinders, and today’s derby game should test their mettle. After a difficult season last year, Nottingham Forest have started really well this season with a win against Bradford City and an excellent point against Fylde a fortnight ago (pictured). Forest have a large squad, and have progressed a number of young players from their RTC into the squad this season, one of whom (Katie Middleton), bagged a hat-trick at the weekend against TNS in the Cup. With the game to be staged at Pride Park, extra spice will be added to what should be a classic FA WNL game this afternoon . Prediction: The Rams should win but, heck, it’s a derby!!

Sheffield FC 5 Pontefract Collieries 3 Evo-Stik East Division Home of Football, Dronfield Saturday, 1st September 2018 Sheffield FC grabbed their first win of the season, as they ran out 5-3 winners in an entertainment packed thriller against Pontefract Collieries. Sheffield took the lead on 17 minutes, as James Gregory burst down the left to cross a deep ball, with Marc Newsham (pictured) diving to head home. On 23 minutes it was 2-0, again Gregory making the work on the left, finding Mitchell Dunne in the middle who sidefooted home.

Two minutes later Colls pulled one back, a penalty awarded for a trip in the box, Eli Hey driving home. On 36 minutes Ponte levelled, Cody Cromack crossing, and Jack Greenhough looping a header over the keeper. It took less than a minute after the restart for Club to get back in front, Charlie Wakefield crossing from the left, with Jamie Yates heading in. Pontefract levelled once again on 65 minutes, Conner Smythe sending a freekick in, and Jake Picton flicking a header into the net. The lead swung to the home side yet again, after Jamie Williams wrested James Gregory to the ground, Andrew Gascoigne (pictured) dispatching a beauty of a free-kick to the top corner. Club wrapped things up three minutes from time, Dunne setting up a simple tap-in for Newsham, with Vaughan Redford being shown a red card for an altercation after the goal. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Sheffield FC Ladies Sheffield FC Ladies was formed in 2003 when previous team Norton Ladies affiliated with the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC. The Club started life in Division 1 East of the Yorkshire & Humberside Regional WFL, the bottom level of the women’s pyramid of football at the time, which became the North East Regional WFL in 2005/06. Having finished third, then runners up for two successive seasons, Sheffield finally won their first league title in 2007/08, and within the space of two more seasons, were promoted into the Northern Combination WFL, which they won at the first attempt in 2010/11. Sheffield’s debut season at FA Women’s Premier League level could hardly have gone much better as Sheffield finished the year as Northern Division runners up behind eventual champions Manchester City. The team picked up silverware for the third season running, courtesy of a very first win in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup. Sheffield went one better in the league in 2012/13 as they lifted the FA WPL Northern Division title for the very first time, losing just one league match in total and finishing nine points clear of Nottingham Forest. They also repeated their success in the S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, beating Rotherham United 6-0 in the final. With promotion to the FA Women’s Super League not possible, Sheffield were forced to defend their FA WPL Northern Division crown in 2013/14, which they managed to do with five matches to go, ultimately finishing 15 points clear of runners up Preston North End. They added a third successive S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, but the highlight of the season was winning the FA Women’s Premier League Cup by beating Cardiff City 6-2 in the final, crowning off an historic treble trophy winning season.

History 2003-2018 In 2014/15, the first team missed out on a second successive FA WPL Cup losing on penalties in the final to Charlton Athletic after a 0-0 draw, but the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup was won for a fourth year running. The Club enjoyed a best ever run in the FA Women’s Cup by reaching the Fifth Round. Sheffield FC won a third successive FA WPL Northern Division title, to secure a place in a first ever Championship Play Off Final in which an injury time winner saw Sheffield beat Portsmouth to become the first club to gain promotion on merit to the top flight of the game: the FA Women’s Super League. Under new first team manager Zoe Johnson, Sheffield secured a respectable fifth place finish in their debut FA WSL season and reached the quarter-finals of the Continental Tyres. The development team finished as runners up in both the FA WSL Northern Division and the League Cup, losing 2-1 in extra time to Arsenal. The 2017 Spring Series was less of a success for Sheffield as they finished one place off the bottom in ninth, and were unlucky to go out of the FA Women’s Cup at the fourth round stage to a controversial penalty in a 1-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers Belles. But the team kick started again for the 2017/18 season having change back to a winter season, with Sheffield once again finishing top half in fifth place, beating their previous points total. With the FA’s continued agenda to drive the financial burden of clubs competing at Tier 2 up and up, Sheffield were forced to make the incredibly difficult decision to withdraw from the newly constituted FA Women’s Championship before the 2018/19 season, and thus begin this season in the new FA Women’s National League
