PERFORMING ARTS LIVE

Unparalleled guest artist performances and engagement by internationally acclaimed masters and innovators of music, theatre and dance. Courtney Reilly, Artistic Director

SIERRA HULL

Friday, September 27 at 7:30PM

Armstrong Concert Hall

Tickets $32

In her first twenty-five years alone, singer/ songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Sierra Hull hit more milestones than many musicians accomplish in a lifetime. After making her Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of ten, the Tennessee-bred virtuoso mandolinist played Carnegie Hall at age twelve, then landed a deal with Rounder Records a year later. Today, Hull — a two-time Grammy-nominated artist and six-time recipient of IBMA's Mandolin Player of the Year — has graced the country's most iconic stages, including the East Room of the White House. Her collaborations with legendary musicians are endless, from Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton and Béla Fleck to the Indigo Girls, Garth Brooks and Gillian Welch. Through these collaborations, she has earned praise as a true master of her instrument, but also honed a unique sound that has placed her in a genre-defying category of acoustic music's most inventive artists.

Their commitment to a holistic process in which all of the artists participate in the composition, choreography and handcrafting of the costumes and drums, imbues SJT with a singularity of mind and spirit. Through this unique artistic process, harmony is achieved and the music rings with unity and clarity.

Anton Chekhov's The Seagull (1896) is a rueful domestic comedy that explores the intricate lives and loves of a theatrical family. Her son, Konstantin, a troubled experimental playwright, is deeply in love with Nina, a mercurial and naive young actress. Nina’s affections, however, lead her to run off with Arkadina's lover, Trigorin. Two years later, they all reunite at the lakeside estate where their stories began, culminating in a tragic and ironic ending. Under the direction of Scott Hudson, this production comes to life with music performed by members of the Conservatory Choir (Richard W. Robbins, director).

Delight in the rich, dynamic melodies of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide Suite, which brings to life the beloved operetta in a blend of classical and popular styles. Be among the first to witness a groundbreaking new wind ensemble setting of Jessie Montgomery’s Coincident Dances, which captures the frenetic energy and multicultural aural palette of a short walk through a New York City neighborhood. Known for her innovative compositions that weave together diverse musical traditions, Montgomery's work is a fusion of several different sound-worlds: English consort, samba, mbira dance music from Ghana, swing and techno.

JOIN US IN CELEBRATING SHENANDOAH’S

150TH ANNIVERSARY!

Since its founding in 1875, Shenandoah has been a home for artistic performance, touching lives with beauty and creativity. With the conservatory developing into one of the country's leading centers for arts training and with a cherished haven and center of performance, we look forward to the next century and a half. As we approach our sesquicentennial in 2025, we are thrilled to share a significant achievement.

Wilbur Dove ’59 and his wife Clare have given Shenandoah a truly remarkable gift – $20 million – to celebrate our 150th birthday in 2025. This visionary donation supports the plans for a new arts building that complements our celebrated professional theatre spaces. It will be a sanctuary where our budding musicians and dancers, as well as distinguished guest artists, can dream and create; and where our university and the broader community can come together to revel in performances that enchant and inspire.

We are deeply grateful to the Doves for their incredible support. Their hope is that this gift will inspire others to give in honor of our special milestone.

Patrons like you make Shenandoah what it is today. Your support helps us nurture talented artists and graduates who go on to make a difference in their communities. With your help, Shenandoah’s future is brighter than ever.

Please join us in celebrating this special anniversary, and let’s make the next 150 years even more amazing together!
