WELCOME!

Dear friends,

On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, welcome to Shenandoah Conservatory’s 2022/23 season! More than ever, we are grateful to share great art with our community. Whether on our stages, around town or in our local public schools, our students, faculty and artists have enjoyed reconnecting with you this past year and look forward to the exciting season ahead.

Our 2022/23 season celebrates the innovative and resilient spirit of the arts with a season of music, theatre and dance performances by our courageous students, award-winning faculty and internationally acclaimed guest artists. This year we’re also thrilled to introduce CONTEMPO Ensemble, a contemporary music group directed by Rod Vester (Director of Contemporary Music) and featuring student vocalists and instrumentalists from a wide variety of musical backgrounds (read more on page 25). And we welcome many new faculty to our community — among these, the guitarist Colin Davin and flutist Julietta Curenton, who will both present recitals this season (see page 30 for details).

The Grammy Award-winning, Charleston, South Carolina-based quintet Ranky Tanky draws inspiration from the rich and resilient culture of the Gullah, who have lived in the Sea Islands and coastal plains of the Southeastern United States for centuries, preserving many of their Central and West African roots.

Ranky Tanky, a Gullah phrase for "get funky," combines the stories, rhythms, shouts and beats of the Gullah with jazz and gospel traditions to create a wholly unique style of American music that has been described as “soulful honey to the ears” (NPR) and earned the ensemble several #1 spots on Billboard and Jazz charts. The band kicks off Shenandoah Conservatory’s 2022/23 season with an unforgettable opening concert featuring playful songs, soulful vocals and funky beats that celebrate the enduring spirit of the Gullah, while forging a new path for American music.

Aizuri Quartet has established a unique position within today’s musical landscape, infusing their music-making with infectious energy, joy and warmth — cultivating curiosity in listeners and inviting audiences into the concert experience through their innovative programming, and the depth and fire of their performances.

With a penchant for fusing classical and contemporary forms, Aizuri has been praised by The Washington Post for “astounding” and “captivating” performances. In 2022, they opened for the indie rock band Wilco, where over a span of five nights and with crowds totalling more than 15,000, they performed repertoire by living composers to ovations and critical acclaim. Other 2022 triumphs include a major concerto debut with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, a fellowship with WQXR’s Artist Propulsion Lab and a prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award. These recent accolades follow a Grand Prize at the 2018 M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition; along with a debut album, Blueprinting, that was released to critical acclaim, nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award and named one of NPR Music’s Best Classical Albums of 2018.

Hailed by the New Yorker as the “most respected” and “most brilliant” hip-hop choreographer in America, Rennie Harris creates personal and distinctive works, telling stories — through dance, music and spoken word — that are as riveting and honest as hip-hop itself. With a career spanning three decades, Harris’s internationally acclaimed company Puremovement embodies the rich tradition of street dance and hiphop culture, while simultaneously advancing an energetic new voice and vocabulary for dance.

Rennie Harris Puremovement has toured around the world, performing for the Queen of England and serving as a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department. Harris — who has been honored with prestigious awards including the Alvin Ailey Black Choreographers Award, the Doris Duke Arts Award and Dance Magazine’s Legend Award — is a true legend of dance. In the company’s first visit to the region, audiences will experience Harris’s legacy through Nuttin’ But a Word, an evening-length work that pushes the boundaries of street dance vocabulary and challenges audiences to view hip-hop through a different lens.

Chris Brubeck (bass/trombone) and Dan Brubeck (drums) have been making music together their entire lives — performing alongside their father, jazz great Dave Brubeck, and with their own critically acclaimed quartet. Together with guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb, the Brubeck Brothers Quartet has a rare collective synergy that has catapulted them beyond your typical jazz band. Their live performances reveal an inherent ability to explore and play unique and rare time signatures while artfully integrating the influences of funk, blues and world music.

Since graduating from Shenandoah Conservatory in 2016, Alexander Bernstein has forged an impressive career as a young artist who expertly traverses the worlds of classical and new music. His love of new music has led him to study and premier works by contemporary composers, such as Berio, Ligeti, Ives and Cage; and in 2015, he recorded a solo CD of works by the Irish composer Ryan Molloy. His solo recitals have been received to great acclaim in the United States, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Romania. Bernstein has fiercely performed in many competitions, winning second prize and the RTE Lyric FM Special Prize at the 2015 Dublin International Piano Competition, third prize in the 2015 Verona International Piano Competition, third prize in the 2015 Gian Battista Viotti International Piano Competition and first prize in the 2011 Irish Freemasons Young Musician of the Year Competition.

Acclaimed by the Baltimore Sun as “one of the biggest pianistic talents to have emerged in this country in the last 25 years,” pianist Terrence Wilson is an active recitalist who has toured around the world. In Europe, he has given recitals at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, the Louvre in Paris, and countless other major venues. In the United States, he has given recitals at Lincoln Center in New York City (both Alice Tully Hall and Avery Fisher Hall); the Ravinia Festival in Chicago; the Caramoor Festival in Katonah, New York and more. Wilson has received numerous awards and prizes, including the SONY ES Award for Musical Excellence, an Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Juilliard Petschek Award.

Observe the guest artists as they work with Shenandoah Conservatory piano students. Masterclasses are typically held on the Monday following most World of the Piano performances from 10AM to noon in Armstrong Concert Hall. Limited seating is open to the public for quiet observation. Inspired by Federico Fellini's Nights of Cabiria, Sweet Charity explores the turbulent love life of Charity Hope Valentine, a hopelessly romantic but comically unfortunate dance hall hostess in New York City. With a tuneful, groovy, mid-1960s score by Cy Coleman, sparkling lyrics by Dorothy Fields and a hilarious book by Neil Simon, Sweet Charity captures all the energy, humor and heartbreak of life in the big city for an unlucky but irrepressible optimist.

Set in an intimate black box studio and directed by our Director of Opera Ella Marchment, Opera Up Close features small ensembles, but big ideas. Hydrogen Jukebox (1990) is a compelling and provocative chamber opera featuring music by Philip Glass and the words of iconic beat poet Allen Ginsberg. Named for and inspired by Ginsberg’s 1955 poem Howl , Hydrogen Jukebox is a melodrama that creates a portrait of the sensory overload and upheaval of America from the 1950s through the 1980s — covering the end of World War II through the thick of the Cold War. Through a special collaboration with the Dance Division, and accompanied by a live chamber ensemble, this production powerfully explores the difficult, often ugly, growing pains of our country.

SHENANDOAH CONSERVATORY ARTS ACADEMY

Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy (SCAA) provides studies in a variety of music, theatre and dance for students of all ages and abilities. Offerings provide pre-professional training, cultural enrichment and educational enhancement through a range of private lessons, group classes and ensemble studies.

FREE COMMUNITY CONCERTS

Enjoy free community concerts featuring Shenandoah's premier faculty and student artists in the following ongoing series:

Live at Lunch, produced in partnership with Valley Health, presents free lunchtime concerts in the Winchester Medical Center North Tower Lobby during the academic year.

Sunday Art in the Park by Reston Town Center Association and Reston Community Center on Sunday evenings throughout the summer.

Visit the Shenandoah Conservatory Box Office located in the Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre lobby: 620 Millwood Avenue, Winchester, VA 22601.

BOX OFFICE HOURS

Regular Hours: Mon–Fri 12PM–5PM

Summer Hours (Memorial Day–early August): Tue–Sat 12PM–5PM

The Box Office is also open two hours prior to all performances at the specified venue.

LATE SEATING POLICY

Shenandoah Conservatory strives to promptly begin performances at the scheduled time. We recommend arriving approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of the performance to allow ample time to park, claim tickets and find seats.

Out of respect to the audience and artists, patrons who arrive late to a performance will be asked by an usher to wait until an appropriate break in the performance to take their seats. Some performances may not have a break in which a “no late seating” policy will be in effect.

Due to the intimate nature of the venues, there is no late seating permitted for performances in Glaize Studio Theatre and Shingleton Dance Space.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

Shenandoah Conservatory performances and special events will only be canceled for inclement weather in extreme cases. Please note that Shenandoah Conservatory performances do not always follow the same closing procedures as Shenandoah University. Inclement weather announcements are communicated via conservatoryperforms.org, email, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

ACCESSIBILITY

All facilities are handicap accessible. Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre is equipped with Listen EVERYWHERE technology for hearing assistance. Accommodations for disabilities may be arranged by contacting the Box Office at least three days prior to the performance.

DISCOUNTS

Discounts are available for civil servants (including military, teachers, first responders and healthcare workers), senior citizens (ages 62 and up), students, groups and Shenandoah University faculty and staff for most performances. Please see the Box Office for specific details.

TICKET EXCHANGES/REFUNDS

Exchanges may be made up to 24 hours before the date of the performance during normal business hours. Tickets must be exchanged for performances within the same season and are based on availability. An additional fee of $4 per ticket is levied on exchanges of all single tickets. Subscribers may exchange at no additional cost. Patrons who exchange for performances at a higher rate or originally purchased tickets with a promo code are responsible for the difference in price. Once exchanges are complete, patrons should discard voided ticket(s). All sales are final; no refunds.

GROUPS

Group reservations and discounts can be secured for parties of 10 or more. Reservations may be modified up to two weeks prior to the date of the scheduled performance. Call or visit the Box Office for more details.

CHILDREN

Parents are the best judges of what is most appropriate for their children. However, due to the length of performances, we recommend that children attending an event be at least five years old. All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket.

Out of respect for the artists and audience members, we encourage parents with children to sit where they can easily exit the venue in case their child becomes disruptive. As a courtesy to others, parents or guardians may be asked to remove children creating a disturbance during performances. Ushers are available at the venue to assist with seating and any other needs.

PARKING

Parking is always free for Shenandoah Conservatory performances. Parking lots are adjacent to each venue.
