WINCHESTER, VIRGINIA CONSERVATORYPERFORMS.ORG

WELCOME TO THE 2019-20 SEASON Dear Friends, Welcome to Shenandoah Conservatory’s 2019/20 season! As a national center of excellence in performing arts training, and as the region’s most expansive arts presenter, we are proud to present a dynamic range of programs by our award-winning faculty and students, as well as world-class guest artists from across the globe. This year, we celebrate the spirit and work of collaboration; one of the core qualities that makes our comprehensive performing arts conservatory remarkable and unique. Our 2019/20 Conservatory Performs season highlights a wide array of artistic expression. Our premier guest artist series has something for everyone: “vibrant and stunning” world music by the all-female Zimbabwean five-piece Nobuntu; masterful performances by ensembles of worldwide acclaim, Berlin Philharmonic Piano Quartet and Ballet Hispánico; a rare and intimate evening of “extraordinary, jubilant theater music” with Broadway composer, lyricist and performer Jason Robert Brown; and exciting new creations by groundbreaking artists such as singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Leyla McCalla; award-winning genre-defying PUBLIQuartet; and Manual Cinema, an exciting, ambitious multidisciplinary art collective reshaping the performing arts experience. We also welcome a host of internationally acclaimed pianists, including two artists interpreting some of history’s greatest masterworks: Anne-Marie McDermott performing Bach's complete Goldberg Variations and our own John O’Conor, culminating the piano season with a momentous all-Beethoven program celebrating the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth. Beyond welcoming some of the world’s most highly acclaimed and creative artists to Shenandoah Conservatory as guests, we are pleased to welcome two of them into our full-time faculty: the awardwinning trombonist Matthew Niess (who has previously served on our part-time faculty) and the internationally renowned trumpeter Mary Elizabeth Bowden. Both bring with them the spirit of collaboration that is such a hallmark of our conservatory community. Speaking of exceptional collaborations and exciting news . . . you will not want to miss The Body, The Voice, The Instrument, an ambitious and unprecedented collaborative performance featuring the combined forces of our dance, instrumental and choral divisions. We are also charting new territory as the first higher education institution in the country to produce the

Broadway hit Something Rotten! Finally, we are again hosting our groundbreaking weeklong student project initiative, now under its newly-minted name ShenCoLAB. In late October, we will turn over the facilities to our students, who will work across disciplines on selfdirected, time-limited projects fueled by their own passion, drive and curiosity. The week culminates with a daylong festival featuring an exciting range of innovative and provocative performances, presentations, roundtable discussions and other special events. ShenCoLAB is the only such week of its magnitude and scope offered by a university arts school in the United States, and we encourage you to join us for what has quickly become one of the conservatory’s most treasured events. We’re so delighted that you are here, and I hope you’ll have the opportunity to attend many of the wonderful programs in the season ahead. Welcome! Sincerely,

Dr. Michael Stepniak Dean and Professor of Music Shenandoah Conservatory

Combining live theatre and music with handmade shadow puppetry, cinematic techniques and original musical compositions, Manual Cinema creates immersive visual stories for stage and screen. Trained a classical cellist, Leyla McCalla is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has always drawn inspiration from history, and the music and stories of her ancestors. As a member of the Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, she explored the realities of the African American experience, while inspiring a greater appreciation of the history and role of the African American string band genre. McCalla has now found her voice as solo artist, and with her third and most recent album, Capitalist Blues, she largely puts her cello aside to tackle some of the most complex and challenging social issues of our time.

Ballet Hispánico, America's leading Latino dance organization, has brought individuals and communities together to celebrate and explore Latino cultures through dance for nearly 50 years. The company is hailed for its technical precision and artistic virtuosity on the stage. Representing a multitude of nationalities, Ballet Hispánico reflects the everchanging face of our nation. The company brings innovative ways of experiencing and sharing a cultural dialogue to the stage with a unique program of contemporary works that explore the diversity of Latino cultures.

This venue has cocktail table seating. Doors open at 7PM for food and drink service. “Her voice is disarmingly natural, and her settings are elegantly succinct: often just the barest lattice of plucked strings (cello, guitar, banjo), with an occasional turn toward old-time swing or Haitian rhythms. Her magnificently transparent music holds tidings of family, memory, solitude and the inexorability of time: weighty thoughts handled with the lightest touch imaginable."

This engagement of Ballet Hispánico is made possible through the ArtsCONNECT program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Additional support provided by Marion Park Lewis Foundation.

“This dance company can wake up the neighborhood with a sudden, brassy shout or it can croon softly in your ear, whispering words of love.”

U.S. College and University Premiere! Shenandoah Conservatory presents the U.S. college and university premiere of Something Rotten!, the hilarious Broadway hit musical comedy about the musical comedy that started it all. Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play, but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s first musical. Amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self. With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, Something Rotten! is an uproarious dose of pure Broadway fun and an irresistible ode to musicals— those dazzling creations that entertain us, inspire us, and remind us that everything is better with an exclamation point! “the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years” — Time Out New York

Amid religious intolerance, political injustice and racial tension, the stirring Tony Award-winning Parade explores the endurance of love and hope against all odds. Daring, innovative and bold, the musical recounts the true story of Leo Frank, a Brooklyn-raised Jew living in Georgia, who is put on trial for the 1913 rape and murder of 13-year-old Mary Phagan, a factory worker under his employ. Already guilty in the eyes of everyone around him, a sensationalist publisher and a janitor's false testimony seal Leo's fate. His only defenders are a governor with a conscience and, eventually, his assimilated Southern wife who finds the strength and love to become his greatest champion.

“Something wicked this way comes…” One of Shakespeare’s most enduring tragedies, Macbeth follows the descent of a brave Scottish general who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become king. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself, but his path quickly descends to paranoia and misery.

Coward’s beloved classic Blithe Spirit was a smash hit of the London and Broadway stages, and continues to be one of the playwright’s most beloved works. Haunted by a host of spectres and showmen, the outlandish comic fantasy finds the fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine in the throes of chaos when he invites an eccentric medium and clairvoyant to his house in hopes of gathering material for his next book. The scheme backfires when, after a séance, Charles is haunted by the ghost of his annoying and temperamental first wife, who is determined to disrupt his new marriage.

1776 February 20–23 Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre Tickets $23 Book by Peter Stone Music and Lyrics by Sherman Edwards The seminal event in American history blazes to vivid life in this most unconventional of Broadway hits. It is the summer of 1776 and the nation is ready to declare independence...if only our founding fathers could put aside their pride, fears, uncertainties and petty disagreements and do the right thing for a fledgling nation. Fresh insights, contemporary issues and nontraditional casting breathe new life into the story of how our forefathers freed the country from the shackles of the British monarchy by signing the Declaration of Independence.

JOIN US! DEAN’S CIRCLE Many gifts to Shenandoah Conservatory are designated for specific programs or projects. While these gifts make a tremendous impact, they do not allow conservatory leadership to respond swiftly when presented with exciting new opportunities that require additional funding. Membership in the Dean’s Circle provides unrestricted critical funds that enable us to meet unanticipated needs and seize opportunities as they arise. This kind of flexibility is vitally important in building our national profile and shaping the ultimate direction of the conservatory. Since its beginning in 2016, the Dean’s Circle has funded 81 Student Development Grants, 46 Faculty Initiatives/Innovation Entrepreneurship Grants, and launched the highly acclaimed ShenCoLAB (originally known as Student Performance Week)! Join the Dean’s Circle with an annual gift of $1,000 or greater and you will enjoy access to exclusive events and special opportunities to interact with conservatory leadership, students, faculty and guest artists during the performance season. “Collaborating with other artists leads us to make creative decisions we wouldn’t make by ourselves.
