WELCOME! Dear friends, There’s nothing like live music, theatre or dance. Live performances offer an escape from our regular lives — a time to relax or reflect, to feel joy, to be moved; to reconnect with familiar works of art or experience something completely new. Shenandoah Conservatory's unique community of artists include accomplished faculty, students who are eager to share their individual passions and internationally renowned guest artists who are pushing the limits of their creativity and craft. In addition to our lineup of music, theatre and dance by our phenomenal faculty and students, this year’s Performing Arts Live guest artist series (pg. 4–7) brings powerful stories of resilience, classical music created and performed by generations of Black and Latinx composers, celebratory fanfares, early-career dance artists, and the music of trailblazing women who changed the face of country music. World of the Piano (pg. 8–11) features vibrant and virtuosic piano repertoire by composers of European, Russian and African descent and Shenandoah New Music (pg. 22–23) delivers inventive and exciting music by living composers. This year, we also welcome new faculty who are already working to curate collaborative performances for our upcoming season. Richard W. Robbins joins us as the Director of Choral Activities and Emanuele Andrizzi takes the podium as the Symphony Orchestra's new Artistic Director and Conductor. Pianist Marika Bournaki, actor Aubrey Deeker Hernandez and scenic designer R. Eric Stone, also join our community of artists and educators. Shenandoah Conservatory’s 2023/24 season has much to discover. With so many performances to choose from, there is truly something for everyone. We are especially grateful to our Dean’s Circle, Concert Sponsors and Friends of the Conservatory whose enduring financial support makes this season possible. If you would like to join this generous community of arts patrons, you can learn more on page 32. Whether you're new to our community or a longstanding supporter, please know that we are delighted that you are joining us this season! I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming performance.
Jeffrey Marlatt Interim Dean & Professor of Music Shenandoah Conservatory

Tuesday, September 19 at 7:30PM Wednesday, September 20 at 7:30PM Glaize Studio Theatre Tickets $30 Following rave reviews at the 2022 Edinburgh International Festival, The Book of Life comes to the U.S. for an exclusive tour that will inspire and transform audiences. Powerfully written and performed by Rwandan writer and activist Odile Gakire “Kiki” Katese, The Book of Life is based on letters written by the survivors and perpetrators of Rwanda’s genocide — ordinary people, addressed to those who are gone. Through storytelling, hand-crafted projections and original live music by the internationally acclaimed Women Drummers of Rwanda, the production leads audiences through a remarkable journey of how to rebuild a deep understanding of life in the aftermath of incalculable loss. Hailed as “magnificent” by The Scotsman, The Book of Life ultimately offers hope — unlocking life after trauma and finding a humane way forward full of joy.
Inspired by the poetry of Langston Hughes and Julia Alvarez, Sphinx Virtuosi presents a program showcasing the beauty and tradition of excellence inherent in classical music created and performed by generations of Black and Latinx composers. Their rich program, which features many new works for the ensemble, seeks to uplift spirits through sharing the sounds that inspire them — transcending the boundaries of time, history and struggle. As the flagship performing entity of the Sphinx Organization, the eighteen-piece ensemble embodies the nonprofit organization’s social justice mission and dedication to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts and elevating our collective humanity. SERAPH BRASS
Winners of the American Prize in Chamber Music, Seraph Brass joins the Shenandoah Conservatory Wind Ensemble for a performance celebrating contemporary brass repertoire. Seraph Brass — a group hailed for its “fine playing” (Gramophone) and “staggeringly high caliber of performance” (Textura) — kicks off the concert with a set of performances from its signature repertoire, including the prelude to Edvard Grieg's Holberg Suite, op. 40. The Wind Ensemble follows with a variety of works including Michael Gandolfi's Vientos y Tangos and Imperial Fanfare, and a new work composed by this year's William Averitt Prize for Excellence in Composition Alex Corley ’24 (Bachelor of Music in Composition). Seraph Brass and the Wind Ensemble take the stage together for an arrangement of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass and the East Coast premiere of Jennifer Jolley's Dust, a concerto for brass quintet and wind ensemble. In a mass brass grand finale, students join faculty and guest artists for a rousing and celebratory fanfare.

Following an auspicious debut at the age of twelve with Beethoven’s Concerto No. 1 in C Major, op. 15 after only two years of study, the Johannesburg native captured first prizes in all the major South African competitions while still in his teens, toured his native country extensively and became a well-known radio and television personality.
