CARTOGRAPHY Thursday, September 23 at 7:30PM Friday, September 24 at 7:30PM Glaize Studio Theatre Tickets $28 Cartography is a contemporary theatrical work that explores the commonalities of migration, using both concrete and metaphorical maps to illustrate the migration of families from around the world. Created by acclaimed author and illustrator Christopher Myers and director Kaneza Schaal — and inspired by the artists’ work with refugee youth — the play charts the harrowing journeys of several young refugees searching for asylum. “A wonder of theater-making, Cartography is a production full of cracking storytelling” (DC Metro Theatre Arts), brought to vivid life with riveting design, innovative technology and fresh staging that powerfully conveys the interior and exterior lives of the young refugees whose journeys we follow. Through the inventive use of cell phones, audiences are invited to chart their own migration — considering the journeys they and their neighbors have taken, and the stories that have yet to be told. “honest and authentic ... I, for one, did not want to miss one syllable of the powerful words each [actor] masterfully spoke.” — DC Metro Theatre Arts

by Steven Dietz
Music, book and story by Steve Martin Music, lyrics and story by Edie Brickell
“I want your fear. For your fear, like a current, rushes through your body. Your fear makes your heart pound, it renders your veins rich and full. Your fear hemorrhages deliciously within you.” Steven Dietz’s engrossing stage adaptation of Dracula restores the suspense and seduction of Bram Stoker's classic novel. As Count Dracula begins to exert his will upon the residents of London, they try to piece together the clues of his appearances in a valiant attempt to save themselves from a hideous fate. Rich with both humor and horror, this play paints a wickedly theatrical picture of Stoker’s famous vampire.
Inspired by a true story and featuring the Tony-nominated score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Broadway’s Bright Star tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40s. When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past — and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives. With beautiful melodies and powerfully moving characters, the story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion. An uplifting theatrical journey that holds you tightly in its grasp, Bright Star is as refreshingly genuine as it is daringly hopeful.

The American tribal love rock musical Hair celebrates the sixties counterculture in all its barefoot, long-haired, bell-bottomed, beaded and fringed glory. To an infectiously energetic rock beat, the show wows audiences with songs like "Aquarius," "Good Morning, Starshine," "Hair," "I Got Life" and "Let the Sun Shine." Exploring ideas of identity, community, global responsibility and peace, Hair remains as relevant as ever in examining what it means to be a young person in a changing world.
A CHORUS LINE February 24–27 Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre Tickets $23 Conceived and originally directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett Book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante Music by Marvin Hamlisch Lyrics by Edward Kleban A Chorus Line is a stunning concept musical capturing the spirit and tension of a Broadway chorus audition. Exploring the inner lives and bittersweet ambitions of professional Broadway performers, the show features one powerhouse number after another. Memorable musical numbers include "What I Did for Love, "One," "I Can Do That," "At the Ballet," "The Music and the Mirror," and "I Hope I Get It." A brilliantly complex fusion of song, dance and compellingly authentic drama, A Chorus Line was instantly recognized as a classic.
Nora is the perfect wife and mother. She is dutiful, beautiful and everything is always in its right place. But when a secret from her past comes back to haunt her, her life rapidly unravels. Over the course of three days, Nora must fight to protect herself and her family or risk losing everything. Henrik Ibsen's brutal portrayal of womanhood caused outrage when it was first performed in 1879. This bold new version by Stef Smith reframes the drama in three different time periods. The fight for women's suffrage, the Swinging Sixties and the modern day intertwine in this urgent, poetic play that asks how far have we really come in the past hundred years?
ACTING INCUBATOR PROJECT April 21–24 Glaize Studio Theatre Tickets $15 New this year, the Acting Incubator Project is an actor-focused initiative that offers students the opportunity to work with new material, guest artists and/or innovative ideas and techniques that prepare them for today's rapidly changing industry. Audiences can expect adventurous and thought-provoking theatre that explores contemporary issues or uses a contemporary lens to shed new light on enduring stories and themes. Visit conservatoryperforms.org for updates on this year's project.

The Bergamot Quartet is fueled by a passion for exploring and advocating for the music of living composers. Founded in Baltimore in 2016, Bergamot Quartet strongly believes in the creation of art and amplification of voices during this cultural watershed moment. In a program exploring different cultures and techniques, the ensemble presents an irreverent, breathless crash-course through modern manifestations of consonant tonality.
EDGE Ensemble roars back to life, rocking the Bright Box with a varied tour of rhythmic and percussive new music ranging from virtuosic solos to an electronica-channeling chamber orchestra, and featuring the winning work of the 2021 William Averitt Prize for Excellence in Composition by Samuel Bradshaw ’22. This venue has cocktail table seating. Doors open at 7PM for food and drink service.

Join us in this holiday tradition with Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night, and parade through the Old Town Winchester Walking Mall with boom boxes and mobile devices as new-music carolers!
New York City-based new music chamber group loadbang is building a new kind of music for a mixed ensemble of trumpet, trombone, bass clarinet and baritone voice. Since their founding in 2008, they have been praised as “exhilarating” (Baltimore Sun), “cultivated” (The New Yorker) and “inventive” (The New York Times) and hailed as a “formidable new-music force” by TimeOutNY. Creating “a sonic world unlike any other” (The Boston Musical Intelligencer), their unique lung-powered instrumentation has provoked diverse responses from composers, resulting in a repertoire comprising an inclusive picture of composition today.
Tickets $12
HOW TO PARTICIPATE: Unsilent Night is the result of many individuals simultaneously playing Kline's tracks on CD, mp3, or mobile devices— creating a roving swarm of music throughout the city streets. Bring a mobile device with portable speakers or boom box. We will provide CDs. Visit unsilentnight.com to learn more and download the mobile app or tracks in advance.
Wrap yourself in new textures of music in an evening of fascinating aural soundscapes from around the world, all surrounding the world premiere of a new chamber work setting international love poetry by Shenandoah Conservatory's own Jonathan Newman, written for and featuring voice faculty member and soprano Fotina Naumenko. YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE! FOR STUDENTS “ The grant I received from the conservatory is truly what brought my ShenCoLAB project to life. I am very grateful for what the conservatory was able to provide for me and that my vision could come to life!”
Friends of the Conservatory donations underwrite projects unique to a specific division within Shenandoah Conservatory. These gifts provide additional funding to support our performance series, conduct industry leader masterclasses, host distinguished artists in residency and explore new works. SCHOLARSHIPS & PLANNED GIVING Scholarship aid is an increasingly essential part of our ability to recruit and retain talented students committed to careers in the performing arts. Scholarships allow students to pursue their degrees with fewer financial barriers to their creative success.
