TOGETHER IS BETTER Dear Friends, Welcome to Shenandoah Conservatory, where we—together with you—are building a community of creative and curious thinkers, passionate artists and engaged audiences. As an academic center of training devoted to exceptional artistry, and as the region’s most expansive arts presenter, Shenandoah Conservatory presents a dynamic range of music, theatre and dance by our own award-winning faculty and students, as well as world-class guest artists from across the globe. This year, we highlight the powerful role that collaboration plays in our work—the magic that happens when creative minds, ambitious students and curious audiences come together to explore new perspectives, tackle complicated human and social issues or breathe new life into traditional art forms. Our 2018/19 Conservatory Performs season highlights a vast range of artistic expression— insightful and passionate artists, ranging from established masters to emerging artists who bring a fresh perspective. We’re especially pleased to welcome a dynamic range of artists committed to creative collaborations, such as LA-based CONTRA-TIEMPO Urban Latin Dance Theater, which blends Salsa, Afro-Cuban, hip-hop and contemporary dance and theatre to create powerful, provocative and socially astute works; Christina and Michelle Naughton, two sisters who have captivated audiences throughout the globe with their expert duo piano performances; The Westerlies, a cutting-edge brass quartet that blends jazz, roots and chamber music influences; and award-winning blues and soul singer Martha Redbone, whose newly commissioned musical theatre work tells a uniquely American tale that has been lost until now. We also welcome established masters such as Silkroad, an ensemble founded by the legendary Yo-Yo Ma in order to explore a rich tapestry of musical traditions from around the world; celebrated Russian-American pianist and conductor Ignat Solzhenitsyn; and Abbey Theatre of Dublin, who will take up residency in Brewbaker’s Restaurant Back Room Pub for a weeklong run of their critically-acclaimed work Two Pints. This year, in addition to our guest artists, Shenandoah Conservatory welcomes many exceptional new faculty to our campus and community. Among the new faculty are: Matthew Oltman, who joins us as our new Conservatory Choir Director after serving as music director for the Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer; former Lucinda Childs Dance Company member Matt Pardo as Assistant Professor of Modern Dance; soprano Fotina Naumenko as Assistant Professor of Voice; Director of Acting and Associate Professor of Theatre, Scott Hudson;

and Visiting Music Director Patrick Brady, a Broadway veteran revered for his role as musical director, conductor and vocal arranger for the Tony Award-winning Broadway smash, The Producers. Perhaps one of the most exciting and groundbreaking initiatives this year will not come from our guest artists and faculty, but from our students themselves. In late November, we turn over our programming and facilities to our talented and ambitious students for a week of unbridled exploration, collaboration and creativity. In consultation with faculty and Visiting Teaching Fellow and Artist-in-Residence Daniel Bernard Roumain, students will work across disciplines on self-directed, time-limited projects fueled by their own passion, drive and curiosity. The week culminates Saturday, December 1, with a Festival of Arts, Ideas and Exploration, and you are invited to join us for this thrilling and unprecedented occasion (see page 28 to learn more). As we launch this season, we are reminded of how important collaboration is. As both artists and educators, our work cannot happen in a vacuum. And so, we are eternally grateful to you—our patrons and donors—for your curiosity, passion and commitment. Together, we are better. Sincerely,

Dr. Michael Stepniak Dean and Professor of Music Shenandoah Conservatory

PERFORMING ARTS LIVE BOLD, AMBITIOUS, LIVE PERFORMANCES BY AWARD-WINNING MASTERS AND INNOVATORS OF MUSIC, THEATRE AND DANCE. COURTNEY REILLY, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

CONTRA-TIEMPO URBAN LATIN DANCE THEATER

THE WESTERLIES

CONTR A-TIEMPO Urban Latin Dance Theater creates an invigorating blend of physically intense and socially astute performances rooted in Salsa and Afro-Cuban, and drawing from Hip-Hop, urban and contemporary dance-theatre. With their newest work joyUS justUS, the Los Angeles-based company takes on joy as the ultimate expression of resistance. Whenever humans have survived immense hardship and injustice, prevailing with their humanity intact, the presence of joy—the knowingness and celebration of our true beauty and power—has always been at the root. Embodied through technically rigorous social dance forms that were born out of these experiences, joyUS justUS explores personal truths about the power of hope, faith and family. With stunning and powerful choreography by Ana María Alvarez, vibrant music by East LA band Las Cafeteras and sound by d. Sabela Grimes, joyUS justUS radiates joy, power and connectedness.

A self-described “accidental brass quartet” (because of their unique two trumpet/two trombone configuration), The Westerlies have been hailed by NPR’s Fresh Air as “skilled interpreters” and “adept improvisers.” The ensemble explores jazz, roots and chamber music influences to create the rarest of hybrids: music that is both “folk-like and composerly, lovely and intellectually rigorous” (NPR Music). Equally at home in prestigious concert halls, major music festivals and intimate listening rooms, The Westerlies navigate a wide array of venues with the precision of a string quartet, the audacity of a rock band and the charm of a family sing-along. ABBEY THEATRE TWO PINTS

MARTHA REDBONE BONE HILL: THE CONCERT

The Abbey Theatre, renowned as the national theatre of Ireland, takes over the Back Room Pub at Brewbaker’s Restaurant. Pull up a bar stool, order a pint and prepare yourself for an exclusive and intimate theatrical experience.

Revered blues and soul singer Martha Redbone performs a concert version of Bone Hill, a new musical theatre work inspired by the artist’s family lineage in the Appalachian Mountains. Featuring a cast of eight actors/musicians, the story follows Redbone’s return to her homeland on Black Mountain—and the coal mines of Harlan County, Kentucky—where her family has dwelled for centuries.

Two Irish gents meet at the pub. They discuss their fathers, politics, prostates, pop culture and the afterlife. What unfolds is a witty and provocative evening of theatre that has sold out pub performances across Ireland, and has been hailed by The Sunday Independent as “achingly, breathtakingly funny.” Written by awardwinning Irish novelist, dramatist and screenwriter Roddy Doyle, Two Pints brilliantly blends the intelligence and existential insights of Samuel Beckett with the humor and charm of a barstool philosopher. Two Pints contains mature language. Contact the Box Office for more details. BREWBAKER’S RESTAURANT BACK ROOM PUB

Spanning the lives of four generations of women in a Cherokee family, Redbone travels back in time to her own childhood, and into the memories and tales of her ancestors, to tell the story of one family’s connection to the land—the simplicity and sacredness of that connection and the ruptures that threatened to extinguish it. Written and performed by the multiaward-winning Redbone, the performance powerfully blends the folk and country sounds of the Appalachian Mountains with the gospel music traditions of Redbone’s African American father and the Cherokee/ Choctaw spirit of the artist’s mother. Along the way, this dramatic musical reveals a thought-provoking uniquely American story, and one that has yet to be told by history. ARMSTRONG CONCERT HALL

URINETOWN MUSIC BY MARK HOLLMANN BOOK BY GREG KOTIS LYRICS BY MARK HALLMANN AND GREG QUOTES

Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown is a fun and provocative satirical musical comedy. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a twenty-year drought, has led to a governmentenforced ban on private toilets. When a malevolent company decides to profit by charging admission to its citizens for one of humanity’s most basic needs, a hero emerges to lead an unlikely revolution. Winner of three Tony Awards, Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and even musical theatre itself ! WE ARE PUSSY RIOT WRITTEN BY BARBARA HAMMOND

In February 2012, five young women walked into a church in the center of Moscow and offered up a punk prayer to the Mother of God—“Virgin Mary, Chase Putin Away!” The young activists, who called themselves Pussy Riot, played and shouted for exactly forty-eight seconds before being dragged out of the church by security guards and sent home. That night they uploaded a video of their performance to YouTube and within hours became enemies of both Church and State. The young women were arrested, tried and sent to labor camps for hooliganism and inciting religious hatred. Unlike dissidents from Soviet times, however, the Western media machine took hold of the story and turned Pussy Riot into the greatest performance artists of Russian history. This is their story. THE THREE MUSKETEERS WRITTEN BY KIT WILDER BASED ON THE 1844 NOVEL BY ALEXANDRE DUMAS

When the unlikely group joins together to defend the honor of the French Queen and save the country from war, they become entangled in a world of political intrigue, scandalous liaisons and murderous espionage. Packed with adventure, The Three Musketeers is a timeless classic about friendship, courage, honor and unwavering love. OHRSTROM-BRYANT THEATRE November 16–18 TICKETS $23

NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT MUSIC BY GEORGE GERSHWIN LYRICS BY IRA GERSHWIN BOOK BY JOE DIPIETRO

Set in the 1920s, Nice Work If You Can Get It is the story of charming and wealthy playboy Jimmy Winter, who meets rough female bootlegger Billie Bendix the weekend of his wedding. Jimmy, who has been married three (or is it four?) times before, is preparing to marry Eileen Evergreen, a self-obsessed modern dancer. Thinking Jimmy and Eileen will be out of town, Billie and her gang hide cases of alcohol in the basement of Jimmy’s Long Island mansion. But when Jimmy, his wife-to-be and her prohibitionist family show up at the mansion for the wedding, Billie and her cohorts pose as servants, resulting in hijinks galore. With music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin, Nice Work If You Can Get It is a romantic screwball comedy sure to delight audiences. OHRSTROM-BRYANT THEATRE February 22–24 TICKETS $23

Featuring six diverse but equally hysterical one-act comedies, David Ives’ All in the Timing is a witty, romantic, absurd and existentially-minded evening of theatre.

THEATRE UP CLOSE

BONNIE & CLYDE MUSIC BY FRANK WILDHORN LYRICS BY DON BLACK BOOK BY IVAN MENCHELL

At the height of the Great Depression, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow went from two small-town nobodies to America’s most renowned folk heroes . . . and Texas law enforcement’s worst nightmare. Fearless, shameless and alluring, the Tony-nominated Bonnie & Clyde, from the legendary Frank Wildhorn ( Jekyll & Hyde, Civil War, Dracula) is the electrifying story of love, adventure and crime that captured the attention of an entire country. When Bonnie and Clyde meet, their mutual cravings for excitement and fame immediately set them on a mission to chase their dreams. Their bold and reckless behavior turns the young lovers’ thrilling adventure into a downward spiral, putting themselves and their loved ones in trouble with the law. Forced to stay on the run, the lovers resort to robbery and murder to survive. As the infamous duo’s fame grows bigger, their inevitable end draws nearer. Bonnie & Clyde is a thrilling musical with a score combining blues, gospel and rockabilly music. This performance is part of Theatre Up Close, an intimate series that utilizes minimal production elements in order to highlight the textual and conceptual elements of a play through engaging acting and directing technique. GLAIZE STUDIO THEATRE April 12–14 TICKETS $15

The world according to David Ives is a very odd place, and his plays constitute a virtual stress test of the English language—and of the audience’s capacity for disorientation and delight. Ives’s characters plunge into black holes called “Philadelphias,” where the simplest desires are hilariously thwarted. Chimps named Milton, Swift and Kafka are locked in a room and made to re-create Hamlet. And a con man peddles courses in a dubious language in which “hello” translates as “velcro” and “fraud” comes out as “freud.” GLAIZE STUDIO THEATRE March 29–31 TICKETS $15

MUSIC DIRECTION BY JAN WAGNER

Set on Shenandoah Conservatory’s main proscenium stage and directed each year by a different distinguished guest artist, Main Stage Opera provides audiences with the full opera experience! The classic romantic comedy Così fan tutte follows two sisters whose devotion to their beloved fiancés is cynically put to the test by their own lovers with help from the conniving Alfonso and mischievous Despina. Mozart’s radiant score, performed by the Shenandoah Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, is cleverly juxtaposed with one of the most bittersweet stories of deceit, fidelity and love.
