welcome Dear Friends of Shenandoah Conservatory, Welcome to Virginia’s home for the performing arts! Founded in the late 1800s, Shenandoah Conservatory has become the region’s most expansive performing arts presenter, and a powerful center of arts training that attracts students from throughout the nation and globe. Each year, Shenandoah Conservatory provides our university campus and local region with hundreds of opportunities to witness an array of music, theatre and dance performances. Our 2017/18 guest artist series features venerable masters, as well as young rising stars. We’re especially pleased to welcome emerging talents Telegraph Quartet, recent winners of the prestigious Naumberg Chamber Music Award; the sensational young French pianist Lise de la Salle; vocal powerhouse Roomful of Teeth; and one of my personal favorite theatre companies, Bedlam, an exciting New York-based company, which has been praised by audiences and critics alike for its ability to breathe new life (and an astounding dose of energy) into history’s greatest dramas. We also welcome established masters such as pianist Jonathan Biss; and a lineup of artists who reflect the very heart and soul of the blues, jazz and gospel traditions of the Deep South— legendary New Orleans vocalist Irma Thomas, five-time Grammy Award winners The Blind Boys of Alabama and The Preservation Hall Legacy Quintet. This year, we are also pleased to host two extensive guest artist residencies—a 10-day residency with Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater, integrating the arts and healthcare; and a weeklong development residency with choreographer Ana Maria Alvarez, whose work uses social dance forms such as salsa, step and hip hop to address ideas of race, identity and community. Finally, we are pleased to introduce a range of highly acclaimed new junior faculty to our campus and community. On the performance side alone,
those include: the award-winning cellist Julian Schwarz, who joins us as assistant professor of cello after studies and teaching at Juilliard and a powerful performance presence nationally and internationally; the exceptional Canadian singer and voice teacher Stephanie Higgins, who will be teaching voice in our musical theatre and contemporary commercial music programs; Washington D.C.’s acclaimed jazz pianist, composer, and vocalist Mark G. Meadows, heralded most recently for his spellbinding performances in Signature Theatre’s Jelly’s Last Jam; and leading choral singer, and conductor of Harvard’s Glee Choir, Harris Ipock, who joins us as visiting choral artist and director of the Conservatory Choir. As we continue to welcome new talent to our faculty and student body, we are most appreciative to you for your ongoing support. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you soon!

CABARET SEPTEMBER 29 – OCTOBER 1 OHRSTROM-BRYANT THEATRE** $23
Music by John Kander Lyrics by Fred Ebb Based on a book written by Christopher Isherwood Directed and choreographed by Kevin Covert Music direction by Rick Edinger As the 1920s draw to a close and Germany yields to the Third Reich, a garish Master of Ceremonies coyly urges audiences of the Kit Kat Klub to “forget all their troubles.” However, behind the Emcee’s bawdy song and dance of the Cabaret, the dark and tumultuous realities of life in Nazi-controlled Berlin, begin to surface. Hailed by critics when it arrived on Broadway in 1966, Cabaret tells the story of Cliff, a young American writer, who falls for a cabaret singer, Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor. Revered for its bawdy yet intelligent wit and raucous nature, Cabaret is a dazzling story of following your heart even in the midst of chaos and decay.

by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen Directed by Kirsten Trump Culled from interviews, letters, transcripts, case files and the public record, The Exonerated tells the true stories of six wrongfully convicted survivors of death row in their own words. Performed without an intermission.

A cast of itinerant actors rehearse a doomed flop called Nothing's On, but the real story is what’s happening behind the scenes. Love affairs, slamming doors, cumbersome props, missed cues and offstage intrigue steal the show in this Tony Award-winning Broadway hit.

Barber’s A Hand of Bridge is a nine-minute opera that documents two unhappily married couples who, while playing a hand of bridge, confess their inner-most desires through ariettas that span a range of emotions. Menotti’s comic opera, The Telephone, captures the humor of a young man attempting to propose to his girlfriend, only to be repeatedly interrupted by her endless telephone conversations. Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins is an intriguing satirical ballet chanté (“sung ballet”) in nine scenes that follows a woman’s internal struggle with sin as she journeys across the United States. Sung in English with piano accompaniment Music direction by Karen Keating

LATE SEATING POLICY
Shenandoah Conservatory strives to promptly begin performances at the scheduled time. We recommend arriving approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of the performance to allow ample time to park, claim tickets and find seats. Out of respect to the audience and artists, patrons that arrive late to a performance will be asked by an usher to wait until an appropriate break in the performance to take their seats. All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket. Out of respect to our audience members, we encourage parents with young children to sit where they can easily exit the theatre or concert hall in case the child becomes disruptive. Ushers are available at the venue to assist with seating and any other needs.
