A BUTTERFLY TO REMEMBER A Memorial Tribute to Lost Loved Ones Hosted by AseraCare Hospice
By Chellee Unruh
L
osing a loved one will be one of the most difficult things people experience in their lifetime. Everyone experiences loss in their own unique and personal way, reacting differently and often out of character from their normal behavior. Even though reactions to loss may be different, the one thing everyone has in common is the need for support from those around them to help them move through the grief journey.
A Butterfly to Remember SERTOMA PARK SHELTER June 12, 5:30pm
Remembering loved ones is so important; this is why AseraCare Hospice hosts their annual A Butterfly to Remember event. “After adopting the butterfly as a symbol of hope and transition, we began hosting this event as a way to recognize and help families of patients with their grieving process,” shares Sarah Sachen, Area Sales Director for AseraCare Hospice. “A Butterfly to Remember offers an opportunity for friends, family, and community to join us in learning about former patients and honoring their legacy with the release of butterflies.” Soothing live music welcomes guests as they arrive and register for their butterflies. Food and kids activities are provided leading up to the ceremony that consists of the uniformed men and women of the color guard saluting our veterans. Following a presentation of colors is a series of guest speakers.

HERITAGE IN THE HEART OF SIOUX FALLS Nostalgic Park to Offer Special Summer Classes and Events By Jennifer Dumke | Photos courtesy of Nordland Heritage Foundation
L
ocated in the midst of modern day architecture and busy streets, a unique park on the Augustana Campus lies quietly waiting for the flux of summer visitors and tourists. Appropriately named the Augustana Heritage Park, its origins began as a small plot of land established in the 1970s. However, what it features is much older. Consisting of four historic buildings dating back to the 1880s: the Beaver Creek Church, Berdahl/Rolvaag House, Eggers Country School and the Rolvaag Writing Cabin. Each one of these treasured structures is filled with period furnishings and offers a real-life experience of early settlement. Over the years, the park had already established a following and was used for family reunions, weddings and a variety of gatherings. To ensure its legacy, the Nordland Heritage Foundation was founded and is dedicated to the preservation and sharing of the Heritage Park historic buildings. But new this year, plans are underway to expand from its Sunday afternoon hours to being open 5 days a week, to accommodate more tours and classes on early cultural language as well as monthly public lectures. David Hilderbrand, Executive Director of the Nordland Heritage Foundation, explains how now more than ever there is a need for this type of education and awareness. “This park offers historical significance to the community by highlighting the experiences of the Norwegian immigrants when they settled the Dakotas. Many people are losing connection to their heritage. It’s not uncommon for grandchildren to lose sight of the struggles faced by early settlers,” adds Hilderbrand. From Norwegian language camps for children and adults to expanded, family-friendly hours with guided tours, the Augustana Heritage Park is hoping to be a destination spot for the community.

LOVE ON THE RUN Best Races to do as a Couple By: Chellee Unruh
W
hile running or participating in an obstacle course together may not seem like the most romantic way to connect with your partner, an increasing number of experts agree that couples who exercise together not only shed the pounds that are often linked to a committed relationship, but it can also help strengthen the relationship, improve intimacy and may lead to running down the altar. You could run together on the beautiful trails around Sioux Falls, but why not kick it up a notch and ignite your competitive spirit by participating in in these four local and regional races? TOUGH MUDDER, TWIN CITIES – JULY 14 & 15, 2018 The Tough Mudder Race in the twin cities has three race options. You can compete in the Tough Mudder, a collaborative teamwork challenge that will turn the run with your partner into a team sport. You and your partner will overcome ten epic obstacles over a threemile distance. The perfect blend of fun, fitness and competition. If

you and your partner are already at a certain fitness level and want to step up the intensity, go for the Tough Mudder Half, which is five miles of mud and 13 obstacles designed to test your ability to work together and your strength. You will have so much fun you will forget that you are working on your body and your relationship! If you really want to jump out of your comfort zone and go to the extreme you can do the Tough Mudder Full. This 10-mile run with 20+ obstacles is designed to push you and your partner. Test your limits and discover if your relationship has staying power. If you can get through this, chances are you will cope better with other obstacles life throws your way because you have learned to support each other by overcoming adversity as a team. SPARTAN MINNEAPOLIS SPRINT, WELCH, MN - JUNE 9, 2018 This Spartan race is similar to the Tough Mudder but might be a better fit for the couples that enjoy being in nature. This race is located in a scenic destination with towering trees and rolling hills. They pack about 20-23 obstacles in 3-5 miles. This is another great
beginner to intermediate level race. The bonus at this race is you and your partner can enjoy an ice-cold brew at the end – provided by the race – to toast your victory. They also include fun mementos like a medal, t-shirt and a free professional photo. XTERRA IRON CREEK TRIATHLON, SPEARFISH, SD – AUGUST 25, 2018 This is ideal for the couples that want a little more variety with less resistance. This race would be great for working on your endurance and emotional support of one another. It also adds more variety in the competition with a blend of swimming, biking and running. As a relay team you will participate in a 1000m swim, 20K mountain bike ride and an 8K run. It’s a great way to take in all of the beauty that the Black Hills have to offer. If you are looking for something more local that will still challenge you but definitely bring out the inner child in both of you, try out the Insane Inflatable 5K. This will be a 3-mile run with obstacles along the way including a 70-foot structure that requires you to jump over or through massive size balls to get to the other side. You will also encounter the Wall, which is 20 feet high and 80 feet long designed to burn your leg muscles. Another fun one is the Crash Course where you dodge and push your way through hanging obstacles. After you have finished the race together you can keep the love fest going by enjoying the midway. The midway offers, drinks food and entertainment. The perfect way to end your fitness and relationship challenge. Use these races to take your love on the run. Go the distance as a couple to challenge both your physical and emotional strength. You will find that you feel more connected with each other having shared these experiences and that you can accomplish more when you work together in life and in fitness. n

FORESIGHT By Natalie Slieter
“If I could be of any service in saving souls in any part of the globe, I would willingly do all in my power.” - Venerable Nano Nagle
“The Presentation Sisters first saw the diversity vision in Sioux Falls, better than many of us, partly because of their direct work with the people in Mexico and Central America. When the Sisters see a need, they act upon it in a mission, prayer- filled way. Their vision has helped many companies today plan and better understand the diverse cultures that make up our community.” - Jim Woster, founder and board President of the Stockyards Ag Experience
L
ooking back on Nano Nagle’s life, it is apparent that she had foresight; she cared for uneducated children and the sick, hoping to make the future better for others. She dreamed of the sisters going forth into the world to help others. While she was unable to do this in her lifetime, the foundation she established in Ireland allowed the Presentation Sisters to plant themselves across the world to keep her dream alive. Nano’s ministry was established in Cork. In her heart, she desired to serve beyond Ireland. With a deep love and trust of her God, she carried the hope that her sisters would fulfill this call. Much of this realization came through Nano’s prayer time, which was a priority for her when she wasn’t teaching the children or caring for the sick. She would sit in St. Finbarr’s Church to pray and wait to hear God’s voice. “She was listening to what God was calling her to do. She was listening to the Spirit, being attentive to what the
needs were, and then finding a way,” Sister Vicky Larson said. Nano heard God and responded. Then took one step at a time and planted one school at a time. The way wasn’t revealed to her all at once, but slowly over time. Sister Vicky is a member of the Aberdeen Presentation Sisters. She said that the Presentation Sisters also take time for prayer and do what they call communal discernment so they can have foresight. The sisters will gather in small groups and discuss a need or an injustice to consider. She said it is a slow and methodical process. They quiet themselves internally to listen to one another and focus on getting the head and heart connected to make wise decisions. “The head part is the logic; what’s the injustice that I notice and what steps can I take? But it’s really the heart piece that gives it energy,” Sister Vicky explained.
Sister Vicky encourages readers and the city of Sioux Falls to have foresight by focusing on what will make things better for the children. To realize our dreams, it’s important to nurture our hearts and our spirits, and listen to what the Holy Spirit is trying to tell you. Sister Vicky says to take a few minutes each day to embrace the quiet to listen. You can do this while praying or going for a walk. It’s also necessary to discuss with others what injustices you see and what you can do together to work on them.

NUDE MAKEUP Say ‘no’ to no makeup. Say ‘yes’ to the no make-up look.
Story, hair and makeup by Chantelle Duncan, Licensed Cosmetologist Photo by Margaret Pennock
T
rends have come and gone, but let’s face it, we have a serious love and loyalty to nude makeup. Follow these simple steps to capture this timeless look: FACE AND FOUNDATION Lightly exfoliate skin, and make sure your foundation matches your skin tone exactly. Foundation can be as light as a BB cream or a tinted moisturizer. You can also add foundation to a lightweight lotion to get a natural coverage. PUTTING ON YOUR BROWS This should follow your natural brow pattern. Using clear mascara as a brush to hold your brows in place, apply a very small amount of eyebrow shadow that matches your natural brow color.

EYESHADOW MAKES OR BREAKS THE NUDE LOOK Eyeshadow is the messiah of makeup. Picking an eyeshadow that shows off those sparkling eyes is crucial to this look. Picking an eyeshadow that is a shade lighter for your lid, and a natural shade darker than your skin down will create the minimal makeup effect. LIPS SHOULD LOCK THE COLOR IN AND SEAL THE DEAL

This can be as simple as a tinted lip balm, or a pale pink matte that will make the look a little bolder. Make sure you are not using a nude color that washes you out or causes you to look pale. You can avoid that makeup dilemma by adding pinks and light browns. LIGHT BRONZER AND BLUSH IS A MUST

Dusting on a very light stroke of bronzer along with small amount of blush and highlighter will illuminate your natural glow. READY, SET, SPRAY Wondering how your makeup can stay fresh? Setting spray sets your makeup and makes sure oils do not cause your makeup to move or spread. Nude makeup is always in style. This look is great for an all-day event outside, a movie date, and you can even add this natural look to your workday beauty regimen. n

s l r Gi SUN JUST WANNA HAVE
Things have changed in the world of fun in the sun These days women are enjoying time on the boat and at the beach protecting their precious faces and bodies with professional sunscreens. Gone are the reckless days of sun seeking to build a deep tan. As a culture, we have educated ourselves enough to know chronic sun exposure to UVA and UVB rays is the number one cause of premature aging. It is the direct cause of loose, discolored, thick, tough skin. As medical skin therapists, our #1 anti-aging recommendation at Okoboji Skin Care is the daily use of sunscreen.
Not all sunscreens are created equal! We are often asked the question: What’s a good sunscreen to use? The answer: A mineral based sunscreen which will block UVA & UVB rays without the use of chemicals. Look to the “Drug Facts” on the packaging and read under the heading of ACTIVE INGREDIENTS. You want to see the words ZINC OXIDE or TITANIUM DIOXIDE. Also, companies should list a percentage of that mineral, look for 3% - 5% or higher. This is a responsible sunscreen, and one which protects from UVA and UVB deeper and longer than a chemical based sunscreen. At Okoboji Skin Care, we carry many different mineral based sunscreens. One of our favorite lines, COOLA, is 70% certified organic and contains other fabulous skin loving ingredients like, coconut oil, orange water, avocado oil, vitamins A, B, E & F, plus the prized Kukui nut oil — which is high in omega 3’s. Being as no chemicals are used, COOLA sunscreens are excellent for use full body, including the face & sensitive skin. Shop Online: okobojiskincare.com/coola
Did you know it is easy to safely look golden in the summer? Welcome to the world of self tanners. A high quality self tanner is easy to apply, not at all messy, and lasts for days! Not only does the COOLA company offer amazing options for sunscreens, but they also have a line of high quality organic self tanners which produce a perfect golden tan. Their tanning products are safe, effective, and actually healthy for the skin! Our personal favorites: COOLA DRY SPRAY OIL FOR THE BODY and COOLA ANTI AGING SERUM — for the face, neck and chest area. We have an extensive offering of self tanners in addition to the COOLA products at Okoboji Skin Care, so we can easily match a tanner perfect for you. Here’s an extra tip from us as professional makeup artists: Avoid natural tanning before a professional makeup application. While the sun

not only ages the skin, it also adds thickness and changes the texture of the skin, creating a less than ideal canvas for makeup. Further more, tanned skin doesn’t show off colors as well as untanned skin. Still looking for a tan in those photos? With our expansive line of bronzers, we can airbrush you into a warm tropical glow in minutes. One of our all time favorites is JANE IREDALE’S MOONGLOW BRONZER — a true Jennifer Lopez glow. Hopefully we have convinced you it is safe to take in those wonderful summer rays when using a professional sunscreen, and easy to keep your golden glow all summer long by applying a quality self tanner! I
t’s summer and a girl just wants to have fun, right? With such wonderful options, you can’t go wrong.
Florals in summer are but a necessity. The “in-the-know” fashion designers bestow a full array of big and bright allover prints. Have fun, be comfortable, elegant and just plain gorgeous. Icecream, cupcakes and cookies? Express your “sweet” side and choose a color palette made up of pastel pinks, blues and lilacs add in a tangy sherbet orange and even some yellows. These fashion treats are good enough to eat. Stripes, zips, mesh panels and waterproof fabrics will bring your look to life. All in the name of fun! Denim never goes out, so this season try doubling up and going for a headto-toe look or combine with pastels or brights…if you dare! Have fun, be adventurous; make a splash yet be sophisticated and elegant. That’s what summer fashions are all about.

Live Each Moment with Confidence Treatment Safely Reduces Underarm Sweat
Cheryle Brandt PA-C
Excessive underarm sweat can quickly turn the thrill of a special occasion, first date or work presentation into an embarrassing moment. With varying levels of success, past treatment options for axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating) included topical agents, oral medication, Botox and surgery. “All those options are suboptimal,” says Dr. Sarah Sarbacker at Dakota Dermatology, 4950 S. Minnesota Ave.
Kathrine Jibben PA-C
Dr. Sarbacker says, “We are very excited to continue to offer the latest technology, miraDry™, to our community. Our clinic started using miraDry™ in late 2015. To date we have treated 200 patients with very satisfying results.” The procedure uses noninvasive heat technology from a handheld device to deliver precisely controlled electromagnetic energy beneath the underarm skin to the sweat glands. Sarbacker, who underwent the procedure herself says the treatment is basically painless.
Rachel Rydell PA-C
“For me personally, it has been life-changing,” she says. “I rarely use antiperspirant. My clothes don’t get stained and the sweat, odor and hair are dramatically reduced.”
Local anesthesia, administered via a tumescent technique used in cosmetic procedures such as liposuction, is all that is needed before starting the treatment. Patients usually experience no discomfort during the procedure and there is no downtime afterward. Common side effects include underarm swelling, redness, and tenderness lasting a day to a few weeks.

While sweating is an essential body function for temperature control, the underarms house less than 2 percent of the body’s sweat glands, so the technique does not affect the body’s ability to cool itself. miraDry™ destroys both types of glands and is clinically proven to reduce underarm sweat and odor by 82%. Additionally miraDry™ is proven to reduce underarm hair growth. A FIT PICNIC By Ashley Sornsin
P
icnics are a great way to kick off summer and welcome the warmer weather. A traditional summer picnic menu doesn’t necessarily include the healthiest items. Fortunately, there are plenty of foods that fit the bill, but you might have to venture outside of the traditional picnic basket.
Food is fuel and being given only one body, it is of utmost importance to take good care it. Ultimately, what you eat has a direct impact on your health, so it is important to make wise, healthy choices. When I say food is fuel, think of treating your body like a sports car and give it only the best, premium fuel or in our case, food! When you properly fuel your body with healthy and natural foods, you will be rewarded with a body that performs well and feels good from the inside out. To the right is a list of “fit” picnic essentials. Local grocery stores carry fresh, healthy and delicious products that will also help keep you on track with your health and fitness goals. All of the items listed taste great and will not only fuel you, but will also sustain you. Grab a blanket and fill your basket with fit picnic essentials. Next, gather your family, friends and pick one of the incredible area parks to enjoy your fit picnic! Make sure to include some physical activity to make this a complete (and fun) event. Whether it’s riding bike to the park, bringing a Frisbee or simply playing on the playground, work up an appetite before feasting on your delicious and healthy picnic!

SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2018
Fit summer picnic essentials menu: 1. Main Course – Sandwiches Use organic deli meat (or go for all veggies!) served with Ezekiel bread. Top with as many veggies as possible and get creative! If you want to skip the bread altogether, try using romaine lettuce and roll it up into a wrap. Try using mustard (dijon has great flavor) instead of mayo. 2. Sides – Veggies & Chips with Hummus Grab extra veggies that are pre-cut so they’re good finger food. Cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, mini cucumbers, radishes are all great choices and easy to dip. Chips can definitely make it into your fit picnic basket, just look at the ingredients. You want to see a short list of ingredients, so there should only be be vegetables and a little oil and salt. The products should be as natural as possible. Hummus will be a great dip for your veggies and chips instead of using ranch.
Hummus is ground chickpeas, so again, you’re getting nutritional benefits by adding in delicious sides. 3. Dessert – Fruit Easy to eat and smaller pieces of fruit are great as dessert! Choose whatever fruit is in season, venturing outside of the typical produce you may purchase. Trying something new really makes it a treat! 4. Drinks – Water & Kombucha (or Sparkling Water) Make sure you bring lots of water, but also grab some other unique finds, like Kombucha or sparkling water. Kombucha is packed full of probiotics and live enzymes that will keep your taste buds and body happy (this is important for gut health). If that’s too intense for your taste buds, try sparkling water that’s naturally flavored – no artificial flavors, no sugar and no calories. n

THINGS YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT FARMERS MARKETS
Story & photos courtesy of South Dakota Soybean Council
F
armers market season is in full swing. That means at least once a week, fresh, in-season food and local farmers are just a few minutes away. With more than 40 farmers markets in South Dakota and several in Sioux Falls alone, let’s find out more about this tradition that goes back hundreds of years. Cody Carper is a 20-year farmers market veteran who also grows corn and soybeans, and raises cattle with his parents in Rutland, South Dakota. He started out growing produce in high school to make money and has stuck with it ever since. We caught up with Cody, who was in the middle of loading sweet corn, to explore what it’s like growing food for the market and what you might not know about farmers markets in South Dakota. 1. Farmers markets are a great place to connect with local farmers and talk with them about food. Have questions about how food is grown and raised? Head to a local farmers market to find out what farmers do and why they’re passionate about it.

SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2018
2. Some farmers grow more than just the produce they offer every week. In addition to growing for the market, Cody grows corn and soybeans on a large scale. He says many visitors to the farmers market have questions about how that affects his food at the market. “People have a misconception that a bigger scale farm might be worse,” said Cody. “I put just as much care into farming my acres of corn and soybeans as I do my vegetables. All the other crop farmers I know do too.” 3. Presentation is everything. “July through September, we are at farmers markets seven days a week,” said Cody. “Every morning, we go to a farmers market. We wash, bunch, box and bag everything. The preparation takes a lot of work. We spend a lot of time making sure everything is presented just right.” 4. Farmers markets are the best place to find in-season foods. Look for fresh asparagus, broccoli, beets, carrots,
lettuce, potatoes, radishes, raspberries, rhubarb and spinach this time of year with more produce available throughout the season. 5. Getting food from farm to market is a full-time job. Once farmers get to the market, it’s like a mini vacation. “We pick every day, all day,” said Cody. “So time at the farmers market? That’s the relaxing time. You can sit back and visit with fellow vendors and shoppers, and see the results of all your hard work.” 6. There are more than 8,600 farmers markets in the United States and 42 in South Dakota so find a local farmers market and pick up some fresh local food. There are several options in the Sioux Falls area, including the Falls Park Farmers Market. Want to learn more about South Dakota farmers and how they grow food? BUILDING A MONEY RELATIONSHIP How to Pick the Right Financial Planner By Chellee Unruh
W
omen are often classified as the relationship builder. They build relationships with their family, friends and co-workers. With such superior skills in relationship building why do so many women find building a relationship with money so difficult? More than a third of American women have stepped in to the role as the family breadwinner, however many women step to the side on important money matters like investing and planning for retirement. Women of today can’t be classified as passive when they are taking control of the board room, breaking through glass ceilings and have more earning potential than ever before. Women are even surpassing men in earning college degrees. When it comes
52

to daily finances women often control the purse strings by being the sole bill payer and shopper for the household. Despite all of that, when it comes to building wealth, security and creating long term financial plans women lag behind men. Experts identified four main reasons for why women shy away from money matters. Women tend to feel insecure about the topic of money. Women are prone to focus on penny pinching rather than putting those pennies to work building wealth. They tend to rely on others for financial knowledge and are not the best at converting abstract figures into tangible goals. This partly explains why even women with high net worth are more likely to invest too conservatively and have poorly diversified portfolios. “This is why
building financial awareness and knowledge is a critical success factor for women,” shared Megan Howard, Financial Advisor with Baird Private Wealth Management. Even though women are earning more than ever they still earn less than men over their lifetime and tend to receive less in their retirement benefits than men. Women tend to live longer than men thus facing greater costs in high-expense areas such as healthcare. So how do women flip the money management script? First, recognize it is okay to not have all the answers when it comes to money management. The solution is as simple as getting educated and going to a reliable source for that education. Megan and her partner and mother Mary Howard have been helping women overcome financial barriers for more than 30 years. “We help women build confidence around money and investing. We help them identify their unique financial strengths and insights, leveraging them to be more comfortable to take control of their finances,” says Megan. Their team specializes in working with women because as women they understand the challenges women and families face. This dynamic mother-daughter team provides a holistic, balanced approach to money management. Because of their specialized skills they can help women see beyond the sale rack to a well-planned financial future. What’s unfortunate is that too many women wait until a major life event like death or divorce to spur action and take charge of their finances.
Mary saw this growing, unfortunate need for women and earned her Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA™®) certification in 2014. Mary is also a Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA®) and a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC®), giving her well-rounded expertise in financial planning and investing for women and families. Megan is currently studying for her Certified Financial Planner (CFP) credential to add another layer of value to the clients they help. “Many bright, outgoing, faith-based women have come to us lacking the knowledge and confidence to comfortably manage their own financial affairs. Many of these women often have supportive and encouraging husbands and loved ones. We realized they needed more than wealth management advice, so we developed an encouraging and fun environment where they could learn about planning and investing and gain the confidence to make smart financial decisions. As a result, they have become more engaged, informed and excited about their future,” says Megan. Becoming financially savvy can be more than just making more money and watching your bank account balance rise. Megan and Mary advise women to view money as another tool in their tool box to help them take care of themselves and their family. Megan & Mary help women create financial peace of mind, allowing the clients to focus on sharing their gifts in their work, families and community. By building a healthy relationship with money, women can start living the life they want to live and not be afraid. n

BECOME A BOSS LADY Seeking Expert Advice Can Help Deliver New Business Success in a Competitive Market By Margaret Pennock
T
here’s nothing more exhilarating than thinking about becoming your own boss. In Sioux Falls, with a thriving economy, seemingly easy e-commerce options and various pop-up market places, it seems like the time to go all in. However, the statistics for start-ups are sobering. According to Bloomberg, 8 out of 10 entrepreneurs who start businesses fail within the first 18 months. Not exactly inspiring data to consider. For Loft Advisors Senior Vice President of Personal Banking Rocky Rehfeldt, there are several positives for entrepreneurial individuals in the area, especially women. “Sioux Falls and the surrounding towns are great communities with strong economic engines that allow new businesses to succeed. We have a lot of successful women-owned businesses already and I believe that inspires other women to move forward with their own aspirations. The shift to smaller boutique shops that emphasize a personal touch, along with a general increase in service-related businesses have also influenced the growth in new businesses owned by women.” However, he feels there are critical steps in starting a successful business, which hinge on creating a team and business plan that will prepare you for the unexpected. He shares, “All entrepreneurs can plan for what happens when the weather is 70 degrees and sunny but it is very important to think through scenarios of what can derail the initial success. I think this is done through forming a team you can trust which includes a CPA, an attorney and a banker. I also think it is critical to find a mentor or someone that you can go to and bounce ideas off.”
54
SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2018
Having a realistic time frame to develop the business and to plan for that is another crucial point. “I commonly see people with expectations to be profitable within the first 60 to 90 days, which in most cases is unrealistic. A typical timeframe would be to plan for 6 to 9 months of negative profitability prior to breakeven, but that will vary depending on the industry. One common theme that often falls through the cracks with business owners is that profitability is often assumed to be the same as positive cash flow. However, they are quite different and often when a business starts to gain bottom-line results, the cash flow requirements increase due to the need for more inventory, higher accounts receivable, or more equipment needs that cause additional financial strains.” And when it comes right down to it, having personal relationships is incredibly important. “I think the key is to gain as much knowledge as possible via available resources, which may include attending Chamber events, volunteering for non-profit organizations, attending relevant conferences, and listening to podcasts or motivational speakers. Personally, I think everyone gains knowledge differently so each person’s path will be unique. But I believe we have a great community that supports business owners and new entrepreneurs should utilize these resources and build up a network of people they
can access for advice. Reaching out to people they admire and people who can provide them with valuable data and insights is key.” Find free entrepreneurial resources at the U.S. Small Business Administration’s website www.sba.gov or visit the South Dakota District Office at 2329 N Career Ave, Suite 105 in Sioux Falls. “Women entrepreneurs have many strengths including perceptiveness, communication, and creativity that they combine with their business drive and this makes them well rounded, strong business owners. I do think it is important to continue to celebrate the successful women in business to continue to inspire other future entrepreneurs to go out and chase their dreams.” –R ocky Rehfeldt, Loft Advisors Senior Vice President of Personal Banking

HOME ON THE CHANGE A Remodeled Beauty Boasts Transitional Style By Jennifer Dumke Photos by Margaret Pennock
A
touch of modern class meets traditional elegance; this one-time Tuscan styled ranch home today boasts clean lines and fine detailing to match the busy lives of its homeowners. Selected for its lush location and open layout, it was the vision of experienced interior designer, Julie Hanssen, that made this house a place to truly call home. Along with her talented team of designers, this owner of Evolve Interior Design got busy with the transformation. Starting with the open entry, soffits and arches were removed to reveal a clean, open space while the walls were given a fresh coat of crisp taupe paint. To make the most of their remodeling overhaul, Hanssen was careful to repurpose what materials she could to make the most impact. With a contemporary metal pendant light fixture and clean lines, the existing entry door and sidelights were given a second life. Leading into the formal dining room, the space is saturated with natural sunlight. For a more modern yet traditional feel, a driftwood stained dining room table is softened by upholstered side chairs. Existing maple floors extend throughout are sectioned off with area rugs for added dimension. With a love of art, oversized canvas paintings using mixed metal finishes grace the walls and give a “lived-in museum feel. Hanssen also points out that existing trim was also incorporated into the transitional design to offer additional opportunities to remodel other areas. The formal room is finished off with a spiral wrought iron and glass light fixture and oversized modern accessories in muted tones.

French doors lead to the main floor office which has undergone an extensive transformation. To make better use of the space, custom-built cabinets have been installed while casual room dÊcor has replaced the formal office furniture to allow for a multi-functional, shared family space. The walk-in bay window provides a plethora of natural sunlight which is controlled by simple roller shades. An arched doorway leads to the openconcept kitchen. To incorporate the kitchen cabinets into the new, sleek transitional design, the darker hues are lightened with a tumbled tile backsplash and gleaming granite countertops. Small details, such as adding stainless steel hardware, are enough to perfectly blend all the elements. Dual islands are perfect for busy family life and entertaining. For a fun twist on design, Hanssen opted to reface the island cabinets in a chic, metallic finish to contrast with the granite countertops. For additional seating, an expansive curved island with dual tiered granite countertops is the ideal segway to the open great room. The great room is an area that ranks high on the favorites list of interior designer Hanssen. The open concept layout has been transformed into a sleek, bright space. Using the existing stacked stone fireplace as the central focal point, the large back wall was smoothed out and finished off with floating shelves for artwork and accent pieces. Dark cabinets were given a metallic paint finish while the once large mantle was traded out for a simple, metallic wood shelf. To provide additional light and detailing, an oversized wrought iron pendant dangles above while soft, upholstered leather furniture in neutral tones gives a relaxing feel. For entertaining and casual dining, the great room and kitchen flow into a space that remains bright an open thanks to ample windows overlooking a backyard oasis. Anchoring the space is a round, distressed wood dining table that’s illuminated by a globe-like wrought iron pendant light

Fully remodeled and given a fresh coat of neutral paint, the master bedroom reflects clean lines and cool shades. A smooth, tray ceiling is simply adorned with a dangling circular wrought iron light fixture. Meanwhile, a low pile wool carpet softens and blends with the metallic bedding fabrics. Leading into the master bath, Hanssen could repurpose nearly every element of the existing space. By simply swapping out accent pieces and lighting, the space is immediately transformed. Winding stairs, large windows and octagon wrought iron pendant light fixture lead to the fully remodeled lower level. Like a blank canvas, Hanssen and her team got to work fully transforming the large area into fully functional rooms that fit family living. What once was a wet bar has been converted into a full kitchen complete with custom cabinets from Showplace Kitchen and Bath, stainless steel appliances and a large center island. To tie into the transitional design of the main level, birdcage style pendant lights add flair while sleek white countertops keep this lower level living space bright and open. Hanssen also adds that the decision to include a full dining room table was important when planning the function of the space. Additional considerations, such as the distressed whitewashed sliding doors on tracks, lead to an entertainment area complete with a framedout golf simulator and pool table. The addition of a small countertop peninsula with quartz countertops divides the space and provides added seating. Completing the lower level is a casual living area that is filled with soft upholstered furniture and ample natural sunlight. To add a bright and sleek feel, the fireplace wall was smoothed out and covered with elongated creamy white tile set at a horizontal angle to blend with the sliding doors and adjacent walls. A true stunner, this major transformation now features a bright, contemporary living space that not only reflects personal style but accommodates daily living. And after months of extensive remodeling, it’s taken the power of visionary designers and forwardthinking homeowners to transform this once Tuscanstyle gem into a contemporary classic. But in the end, the product is a custom home that truly reflects daily living meets exquisite design. n

ANTLER JEWELRY RACK Story and photos by Emily Olson

eclutter your jewelry box and bring those beautiful necklaces, bracelets and watches on full display with an antler jewelry rack. Antlers are the perfect way to add trendy, rustic decor that can also function as hooks to showcase your jewelry, creating beautiful wall art. If you are in a hunting family, you more than likely have a rack that is not quite trophyworthy and perfect for upscaling. Bucks actually shed their antlers each year, so you can “hunt” for sheds too. Shedding usually begins in this region in January for the larger, more mature deer and in February for average deer. With the antler decorating craze, you can also find many realistic artificial options at craft stores. Before mounting the rack, determine if you would like to alter its original appearance. Natural antlers can be very dark. Brighten them up with a good scrubbing or by soaking for 24 hours in heavily concentrated bleach water. Using a whitewash of paint is another easy way to give them an even brighter look. Determine how you are going to mount.

For the most basic mount, the antler can be attached directly to the wall. I chose a scrap 1 x 6 pine board for mounting, giving flexibility for moving the mount and to give it a more substantial look. Allow the antler to rest against the surface to find the natural contact points and drill a hole to accommodate the size of screw. I also chose to drill a second time with a larger drill bit ¼ inch deep so that I could add a decorative tack to cover the screw head. This your personal preference. Natural leather cord would also be an attractive option to wrap around the area where the screw is attached if you want it to be hidden. Pre-drill a small hole in your mounting board (or into the stud) before attaching the antler. If using a separate mounting board like this one pictured here, simple 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips are a sturdy, no-damage option. The strips are rated with poundage, so use a size and quantity appropriate for your antler rack’s intended purpose. n

MAKING FAMILY FITNESS A PRIORITY Summer Options for Staying Active By Sanford Health | Photo courtesy of Sanford Health
I
t can be increasingly hard to get the whole family moving – especially together – but the Sanford Wellness Center’s two locations offer a range of options to keep families active all summer long. MAKING WELLNESS A PRIORITY According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, only one in three adults receive the recommended amount of physical activity each week and only one in three children are physically active every day. Every family member is healthier with even just 30 minutes of activity included in his or her day.

“When families invest in fitness it draws them closer to each other,” explains Brandy Sivesind, director of the Sanford Wellness Center. “They enjoy fitness together and then when these kids grow up they feel that fitness isn’t a chore, because it’s how they were raised.” One of the main obstacles to family fitness is often time. “There are so many different things going on – you have to run one child one place, another child a different place, you have to make dinner, you have to do homework – so sometimes wellness gets put on hold,” Sivesind says. “And that’s why you want to try to schedule time to do your fitness with your kids, so they learn that it’s important.”
FITNESS MADE FUN At the Sanford Wellness Center location just off of Ellis Road, there’s a lot to keep kids active and entertained. The center pool has a lifeguard on duty and features zero-depth entry and slide. Kids and parents alike will appreciate the warmer water temperature as well.
gym class, so it’s super fun for kiddos,” explains Sivesind. “There are additional junior fitness classes for kids at both locations and once a child is 12 years old they workout on the floor. If kids have a membership they can also get free swim classes and attend all other fitness classes as well.” CONVENIENT FAMILY OPTIONS
The rest of the more than 70,000 square-foot facility is devoted to even more fitness amenities for the family to play and practice on. Basketball courts for shooting hoops or playing volleyball, a track for walking or running, and racquetball courts.
Drop & Shop night is another popular Wellness Center program. Hosted at both facilities once or twice a week, parents can check in their kids at the center and then leave the facility for a few kid-free hours to go to dinner or run errands. The service is affordable and fun for the kids.
An extensive renovation was just completed at the 49th and Oxbow location, which included the addition of a massive indoor playground. Fourteen feet high and 22 feet wide, the playground has multiple slides, tunnels and climbing areas with plenty of room for play.
Other programs include craft nights and splash nights – when members can float in inner tubes while watching the featured movie.

THE DIGITAL AGE AND HEARING LOSS How Emerging Technology and Stylish Hearing Aids are Reducing Stigma By Jennifer Dumke
J
ust take a short walk and you’ll likely notice the popularity of pedestrians wearing headsets, Bluetooth devices, wireless earbuds and other ways to connect to mobile devices or music. In fact, most of the general population has become accustomed to either wearing in-ear devices or seeing them frequent the streets and shopping malls. So, what’s the big deal about wearing a hearing aid? That question is getting asked more and more often making it easier for those who struggle with hearing loss to cope with the adjustment of wearing a hearing aid.
72
SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2018
Bob Froke, MA, CCC-A is a licensed audiologist at Midwest Ear, Nose and Throat and has worked with patients for over three decades and sees first-hand the advancements made in hearing aid technology. “With the onset of the digital revolution, not only are we seeing improvements in communication and home technology but hearing aids have also come a long way.” Having personally worn a hearing aid for over 4 years, Froke goes on to say how integrating with technology to stream music and connect with mobile devices significantly reduces the stigma for those needing hearing aids. “In general, society has become acclimated to using and relying on external devices.” And it’s only the beginning. Hearing aid manufacturers are just like any other form of technology; consistently trying to increase efficiency while providing a sleek, stylish device. Once known for being bulky, noticeable and often needing frequent adjustments and
maintenance, today’s aids are smaller, trendier and require less work. But it’s not just about looks. These modern-age hearing aids come loaded with additional benefits such as apps that translate speech into text within seconds. Other companies tap into using laser light pulses that convert light into sound. Although these types of technology come at a price tag, even basic devices have become more streamlined and efficient while accommodating any budget. “These improvements are having a significant impact on those who struggle with hearing loss. They have become more widely accepted and the advances in technology offer so many life-changing improvements,” says Froke. Because in the end, it’s about offering a way to live life to the fullest. “This newfound acceptance and reduced stigma enables the millions who suffer from hearing loss to lead an improved quality of life rather than suffer in silence.” n
YES, YOU CAN SEE PREDIABETES AS A GIFT By Jarett C. Bies, Avera Health
Can a health problem actually be considered a blessing?
Y
es, according to Mary Lobb Oyos, RN, MS, who serves as a Diabetes Program Manager at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center. “Prediabetes is the check-engine light on the dashboard of life,” she said.
A diagnosis of prediabetes gives you the opportunity to do something about it, before it causes long-term, permanent and costly damage. “It’s among the biggest issues in population health, with almost 220,000 people facing it in South Dakota alone. That’s 35 percent of the state’s population,” said Sue Johannsen, PA, GNP, an Avera Medical Group nurse practitioner who works with many patients facing prediabetes. “When you find out you have it, it’s an opportunity – a warning, too – but a chance to take control, improve your overall health and reverse the condition.”
74
SiouxFallsWoman.net | June/July 2018
Prediabetes is among America’s most widespread health problems; it is the precursor to type 2 diabetes. In both its forms, diabetes is a disease that affects how our bodies deal with the glucose (sugar) in food. The hormone insulin helps our blood cells process glucose into energy. People with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes do not make enough insulin, and their cells don’t use the insulin correctly. When prediabetes is untreated, it can become type 2 diabetes. That condition brings risks of blindness, kidney disease, heart attack, stroke, nerve pain and permanent damage as well as amputation due to tissue damage, most commonly in the foot. “The diagnosis can be a wake-up call to get you on the right track with healthy lifestyle habits. It’s not like high blood pressure where the only choice may be medication,” said Oyos. “Sometimes a provider is hesitant to use a label. You might hear them say ‘Your blood sugar is a little high’ instead of prediabetes. But we need to be clear with people: this is a health concern.”
Often, prediabetes can be reversed with simple lifestyle changes focused on diet, activity and weight loss, said Oyos. Johannsen agrees with her colleague. “As a provider, I can put patients in touch with a dietitian or we can discuss how diabetes affected their parents, if it’s part of their family history,” said Johannsen. “We can start that conversation, and almost as important, continue it during follow-up appointments.” Prediabetes education events are another great way to take the “gift” of the diagnosis and start down a new path. n

WORLD CLASS PHARMACY CARE “I like that we can make items to serve specific needs of patients. My favorite thing is when a child turns one and the parents come in and say ‘Thank you, without you, my child would not be here today.’ It brings a tear to my eye every time but that is what we do.” –Cheri Kraemer, RPh and Owner, Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic
Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic Provides Exceptional Customized Pharmaceutical Care In a world of one-size fits all, registered pharmacist Cheri Kraemer has drawn a line in the sand by providing pharmaceutical care that is tailored for every patient she works for. With more than 30 years of experience, she owns and operates Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic in Sioux Falls, a recognized world class compounding pharmacy. A compounding pharmacy, Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic is considerably different than a retail pharmacy. “Compounding is going back to the grass roots of pharmacy practice. We make customized preparations from scratch using bulk chemicals from an FDA approved chemical wholesaler. We buy the finest quality of micronized chemicals and bases. We have over 14,000 formulas available and we work with every practice of medicine.” Cheri continues, “Nothing should be made on the counter. We have always used powder containment hoods for all compounding practices to protect the product itself from cross contamination as well as the staff making it. If a pharmacy is not making your compound prescription in a powder containment hood, buyer beware.” Having the ability to work directly with the prescribing physician as well as the patient has been paramount for Cheri. “We work to solve medication problems for patients. get the individualized medication they need. Sometimes capsules and suspensions work great, other times patients need a topical transdermal that is rubbed on the skin to avoid upsetting the stomach. We work to create whatever the physician orders and provide it in the best possible way for the patient.” Although Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic works with every practice of medicine, it specializes in hormone replacement therapy consulting for men and women, pain management consulting (including an alternative to opioids), post surgical inflammatory pain, nutritional consulting and even pet supplements. To make managing medication easy, Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic has a mobile app available for Apple and Android smart phones that allows patients to order refills, gives dosing reminders and notifications when prescriptions are ready as well as notifications of monthly discounts and specials. In addition, prescriptions can either be picked up in the clinic or mailed for the patient’s convenience. rowing up with a father in construction and a mother who was a small business entrepreneur, it’s no wonder Kari Karst has not only taken a path few women follow but has blazed a trail of her own. Kari’s parents, Merlin & Barbara Davis, raised her and her sister Jill to work hard, treasure family and treat others with respect and dignity. All qualities that Kari has transitioned into her everyday life and personal mantra as she leads her company BX Civil & Construction in Dell Rapids, SD. Kari shares, “My dad influenced my career path in a major way. He definitely encouraged his two daughters to be smart and pursue an education and career path that was ‘non-traditional’ so that we could always stand on our own two feet.” Also crediting her mother for teaching her how to strike a healthy work-life balance, Kari is thankful for having her guidance. “My mother owned a jewelry and gift shop in Dell Rapids while I was growing up. She inadvertently taught me the art of balancing work and family. I don’t think she actually thought about it that way, but she demonstrated it in her actions. My sister and I were never deprived of her love and dedication.” A graduate of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology with a degree in Civil Engineering she struck out at just 22 years old driving cross country to her first job working for Ingersoll-Rand Company in Charlotte, North Carolina. After two years, she was transferred across the country to a new position in Los Angeles. It was there that she met her husband Rob who was, ironically, also from South Dakota. “His first cousin Mick was my best friend in college and we had stayed in touch, but back then it was with letters,” she laughs. “Mick had moved to California and Rob had just graduated from a linesman program in South Dakota and

thought he’d have more opportunities out there. That’s our story. We were just two kids from South Dakota who met and got married in California.”
for others to attain success for themselves just like they did. “We want them to experience working for somebody else first. We believe it’s essential they learn to succeed somewhere else first.”
In 1992, Kari and Rob were presented with an opportunity they couldn’t refuse. “My dad and his boss, Richard “Dick” Sweetman, had discussed the possibilities for selling me Buskerud Construction which was a subsidiary of Sweetman Construction at that time. It was a small subcontracting company that was facing increased competitive pressure from women and minority owned businesses and they thought I could do well with it. The company was well run and known for doing good work.” She continues, “Rob and I were both involved in our careers in California and loved what we did. But when we considered the opportunity to move back to South Dakota and own our own business and raise our future family near our own families, we decided that it was a great time to take the risk.”
Under Kari’s leadership, BX Civil and Construction has five times the workforce and about ten times the revenue than it did when she acquired it. “As with anyone in a leadership role, my leadership has evolved as I have learned the business and developed my own strengths. In reality, it has always been about relying on and developing other leaders around me. In the early years, there was a lot of relying on and learning from people who had been working in Buskerud Construction for years before I took ownership. I owe a debt of gratitude to them.”
Twenty-seven years later, Kari and Rob are still happily married with two sons, 24 year-old Colin and Adam who is 21, both of which are following in their parents footsteps in construction management. And while most families would expect their children to step directly into the family business, Kari and Rob believe that their boys need to have the experience of working
After nearly thirty years in the industry, Kari has chosen to now use her expertise and considerable leadership skills to foster growth in the leaders she chooses to surround herself with. “My most important role is creating and supporting leaders who are creating and supporting other leaders. To do this, I spend a lot of time with my team individually and as a group. I have become very intentional about that. I plan and schedule time for team meetings and one-on-one time with each of my direct reports. That is my number one priority.” She continues, “I am learning to delegate as many details as I can so that I can spend more

and not less time with people. It was initially hard to let go because we are programmed to ‘do’ something. But the more I delegate and spend time on jobs and with our team, the more they take on and we get so much more done together.” With no intentions of slowing down anytime in the near future, Kari has become involved with several community leadership roles including serving on Southeast Tech’s Foundation Board to help guide technical education as well as serving on the Associated General Contractors of America Diversity and Inclusion Council. “As a company, we have even taken our Vision, Values & Mission one step further and defined our ‘Why?’ It is building people, building projects, building futures. The people on our team are really proud of what we do. We work hard to be leaders and our first responsibility as leaders is to build other leaders. If we do that well, we get to build amazing projects that our families and communities can be proud of. In doing all of that we literally are building futures for everyone.” A personal goal to share her love for her industry, Kari is also passionate about engaging and encouraging not only women to experience it, but to anyone who strives to find a rewarding career. “There are a lot of really cool things in the highway construction business. It starts out as just concrete and dirt but in the end it’s a beautiful bridge with a beautiful railing and lighting. There’s a lot of creativity that goes on behind the work, and my people are really proud of that. You get great satisfaction from seeing something finished and tangible that you had a hand in from the beginning. That’s why we love it in our industry.” And while Kari is very intentional and serious about her work, it’s also important for her to balance it with her family life. On her off-time that she admittedly makes herself take, she enjoys golfing, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, playing card games and going to good movies. She shares, “Generally, I have been blessed. I believe you should always focus on the positive and don’t let others determine your future. Everyone, female, male, ethnic etc., faces challenges. Work hard. Surround yourself with positive people. Reach out to others. Don’t be afraid to live your dream!” n

COUNSELOR REACHES RURAL AREAS WITH SERVICES By Natalie Slieter | Photo by Maggie Sweets Photography
M
oore Counseling Services is housed off the main lobby of Sunnycrest United Methodist Church. When you walk in to the tiny office, there’s a collection of eclectic furniture. A filled bookcase covers half a wall and there are even some toys. There are file cabinets near the door and a desk in the opposite corner. Despite its small office size, Moore Counseling Services is making a big impact in Sioux Falls and across South Dakota. Stephanie Moore, LPC is a licensed professional counselor and the owner of Moore Counseling Services. She has been practicing for six years, starting as a behavioral health counselor in a variety of settings and organizations in Madison, SD while counseling a few individuals on the side, to get a taste for private practice. But about a year ago, her husband was offered the position of pastor at Sunnycrest United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls. Stephanie contemplated turning all her attention to beginning her own full-time counseling services, but wasn’t sure how she would get started once in Sioux Falls. However, Sunnycrest offered her an office in the church to begin her practice.
From there, her clients grew from Sunnycrest members to individuals across Sioux Falls. Then the phone calls from small town churches began rolling in, asking Stephanie to come speak with church members who were hurting. She now visits Plankinton, White Lake, Stickney, and Madison on a weekly basis. She also provides online services for those she is unable to meet with in person weekly.
Dr Munsinger and our experienced, caring staff are here to ensure your comfort and to provide you with the highest level of care. It’s our top priority.
“I have a passion for providing accessible services to people in rural areas because they don’t have them,” Stephanie explained.
We offer dental care for the entire family including checkups, laser dentistry and cosmetic dentistry.
Stephanie will provide faith-based counseling if requested, but does not claim to be a Christian counselor. She wants to counsel her clients in the way they need it and if that includes their faith, she is more than happy to do that. Currently, Moore Counseling Services consists of Stephanie, who is the owner and full-time counselor, and Aimee Paul, part-time administrative assistant. Stephanie hopes to hire two more parttime counselors in the near future so the practice can grow its reach across South Dakota and take some of the pressure off clergy in small towns, who aren’t always trained to provide the mental health counseling many need.
New patients are always welcome!

“I’m not going to stop when the demand reaches my breaking point, where I can’t handle this many clients. To fill the unmet mental health needs, I will provide more professionals so all people will have access to services desperately needed,” Stephanie said. Stephanie also leads a divorce group that meets weekly. She saw the need for this after reading multiple requests online for a group assisting those affected by divorce. She hopes to continue expanding what Moore Counseling Services can offer so people find healing, joy, and peace. “We need to let our community tell us how we can be helpful and then we find a way to do that for them,” Stephanie said. n

VONNA MARCUS Mosaic Tile Murals Motivate Local Artist to Share the Power of Art By Virginia Olson | Photo by Maggie Sweets Photography
F
or Vonna Marcus art has massive power to move people and bring them together.
For the past six years the Sioux Falls artist has spearheaded several major public art tile projects in the Tucson area with some ‘elbow grease’ and lots of area volunteers. The biggest was completed two years ago. A 40-foot tile mural showcased the active lifestyles of seniors relaxing – sunbathing, golfing, biking gardening – at the RV co-op where she and her husband Tim live six months of the year. The hands-on project took two winters to complete and involved 90 helpers from the Wagons West Adult Travel Trailer Association community.

On a smaller scale she fashioned tiles to go around a light pole this past winter. “The light pole included a black and white checkerboard design with large geometric flowers and white 3-D flowers in the center of each. It turned out beautifully,” she says. Now Vonna has her eyes on Sioux Falls and the possibilities of mosaic tile public art projects. Interestingly, Vonna is somewhat of a newbie when it comes to creating mosaic tiles. Though she always enjoyed do-it-yourself projects and felt she has some artistic flair, it was Vonna’s sister who introduced her to the Southwestern style genre.

“Doodling and drawing have always been part of my personality. I dabbled in water color, some wood projects, sewing and reveled in stained glass, but it was my sister Sue who introduced me to handmade tiles,” says Vonna. “I have been making them for six years and feel it will be a lasting venture.” Vonna’s initial projects, at first, were small. Using tiles she created her street number and a Little Free Library at her home. These projects were more than fun, making Vonna think about space. “We built a studio in our home which I quickly filled with inspirational pieces and my own art. I need a lot of natural light and a good Pandora station. Having friends stop in for conversation soon became part of having my own art space. I even went so far as to start my own business, the Tilery.” Now inspired more than ever, Vonna wants to teach people about the art form and also find a way for mosaic tile to be part of future public art projects in Sioux Falls. Because public art reaches people in their everyday environments, she sees every bridge as a canvas. “When my husband Tim and I ride our bikes, I eye the ugly cement bridge piers along the Sioux Falls bike path. They could be beautified with ceramic tile,” she says. “It would be public art with purpose and connected to its natural surroundings.” She also feels art has deeper meaning and uses it as a vehicle for joy, spontaneity and healing. “I currently am making thumb print pebble stones for Sanford. These stones are given to patients before surgery and used for self-calming and meditation.” Vonna is launching her mosaic building workshops this summer out of her studio. “Tile communities are more familiar in the Southwest than in South Dakota. The art medium is connective. People just need to discover it.” n
