Maritime competence creates values The Norwegian maritime industry cluster is responsible for almost 20 percent of Norwegian export of goods and services. Accordingly it is Norway’s second largest export sector only surpassed by Norwegian petroleum exports. The maritime industry was responsible for a 160 bn NOK (about 19 bn euro) value creation and employed 105 000 people in 2012, according to a recent study conducted by the research company Menon Economics. The maritime industry is global by nature, and Norwegian maritime companies are present in a great number of countries around the world. Trade has been – and still is – crucial to Norway s welfare. It is one of the strongest engines of economic growth. Therefore the Norwegian Government seeks to promote free trade. Competition is an excellent source of feedback from the market, and crucial for developing new solutions and business strategies. Markets, such as Brazil, Korea, Japan, Russia and of course China, are of great importance for the Norwegian maritime cluster. Korea, China and Japan are the world’s largest shipbuilding countries. However, the Norwegian shipbuilding industry is among the most prominent builders of sophisticated and specialized offshore ships for the global market. At the same time Norwegian maritime equipment and service providers cater for shipyards and shipowners in all segments – worldwide. The Norwegian maritime industry aims to be world leading in provision of environmetnal friendly solutions. Competition in the global markets gives an edge to further improvement and specialization, utilizing advanced technology aimed at increasing environmental performance and operational efficiency.

By Mrs. Monica Mæland, Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry.
This however, requires equal terms of competition. This is why the Norwegian government advocates open market access as well as global safety, environmental and security standards for ships and maritime equipment through the International Maritime Organization. I believe that key factors for the success in Norwegian maritime industries are high level of skills and expertise, international value chains, cooperation with customers and a willingness to try new solutions. One of the Government’s priorities is to strengthen the competitiveness of Norwegian companies. We will stimulate maritime competitiveness through RD&I- programmes, better education, better infrastructure, a more efficient public sector and reducing red tape.
The Norwegian maritime industry has never been afraid to venture beyond known horizons, and this has been our primary strength. For generations we have adapted to new markets and learned to utilise new technology, setting new milestones in international shipping. I am impressed by the ambitions to improve safety and protect the environment. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries was established January 1st 2014. We are now responsible for designating both

The year for building PSVs – New orders with focus on specialized units
The Subsea/IMR Vessel Lewek Inspector entered into a long term charter to EMAS AMC on delivery from Havyard Ship Technology in November.
Offshore Service Vessels Norwegian shipbuilding industry is today first and foremost associated with building Service Vessels for the offshore industry. Judging from the number of vessels delivered from Norwegian yards the OSV sector kept up the momentum of previous years. SKIPSREVYEN has presented 35 newbuildings this year, which is one more than in 2012. The peak years were 2008 and 2009 when more than 50 such ships were built and/or outfitted at Norwegian yards. The count comprises Platform Supply Vessels, Anchor handlers, specialized vessels for Construction and Subsea works, Seismic ships and other vessels with special features. In 2013 the majority was made up of Platform Supply Vessels, about 20 in number, and seven units were of the Subsea/Construction type. Value-wise the average ship price was not that impressive impacted by the many PSVs. (It is a different 8

story for the newbuildings contracted during 2013 – see below). There is no change when it comes to which shipyards are building the OSVs. The Vard yards feature strongly with a total of 15 units. Next in line is Ulstein and Kleven with 5 new ships each. 2013 was the year when the foreign Owner percentage for this sector increased; to 23% vs. 14% in 2012, – and between 17% and 11% the preceding three years. Perhaps one should add that three ships, equivalent to 8.5% of the total OSVs, were contracted by STX’ shipowning company STX Pan Ocean and were sold prior to delivery from yard to Tidewater Inc. As was widely reported, STX Pan Ocean suffered serious losses in 2013, which was probably the cause for reselling these newbuildings. Other sectors Norwegian yards delivered 4 Fishing Vessels in 2013, which is unchanged from the year

before. At that time there were indications to the effect that the number should increase somewhat this year. And in fact the total number of new vessels built for Norwegian Owners did increase, but as many as 11 of them were built abroad; 6 in Turkey, 4 in Denmark and 1 in Spain. This trend must be disturbing to witness for the domestic yards. One Well boat and one Fish fodder vessel were built in Norway this year. The work boats are getting bigger in size and better equipped. In 2013 SKIPSREVYEN presented 31 units of this type, which is down from preceding years’ 37 respectively 52. The salmon price reached new “highs” this year, and increased earnings for the fish farming companies can lead to further contracting of work boats for 2014 deliveries. Such developments have been experienced before. We have counted 5 new car-/passenger ferries, which is four more than in 2012. One of these is the new Cruise ferry for Fjord Line. In addition Norwegian contractors took delivery of 3 newbuildings from a Polish yard. The sector Fast Passenger Catamarans featured with only 3 new vessels, down from 8 the year before. Service vessels for the offshore wind farms.
It is satisfactory to note that this “new” sector showed 7 new units built in Norway in 2013 (8 the year before). It is difficult to get the correct figures for the Coastal Fishing Vessels sector. SKIPSREVYEN has presented only 6 units in this category in 2013, down from 14 in 2012. Unsurprisingly, there was not delivered a single cargo ship this year either, unless one chooses to put a fish fodder vessel in this category. To sum it up – SKIPSREVYEN presented a total of 99 newbuildings in 2013 delivered from 34 individual Norwegian shipyards, which are controlled by 28 companies. During 2013 SKIPSREVYEN presented 44 newbuildings delivered from foreign yards to Norwegian Owners. Of these, 15 were of the OSV type and two were large seismic vessels. Look to Norway On the other side of the North Sea BAE Systems announced big job cuts in November, and this news hit the headlines, especially in the UK. BBC Radio Scotland contacted SKIPSREVYEN for a live interview on this subject coinciding with a debate at The House of Commons. The subject for the inter-

view was “Why shipbuilding could be so successful in Norway, but not in Great Britain”. Some of the reasons are well known in Norway, such as the close relationship between Shipowners and Shipyards, and to some extent also including the Ship designers. The financing side is of course also very important in this respect. Further, the interview covered topics like ship prices, the quality of the final product and the general performance by the shipyard, the ability to deliver according to the contract terms including “delivery on time”. Another subject was how much more is the contractor willing to pay for building at home? The BBC interview apart, “the Norwegian way” is perhaps a bit special – not to say unique. The party paying for the final product is the key player and often the originator of a newbuilding project. The shipbuilding process therefore often starts with the Shipowner placing a contract based on their preferred design (often through a shipbroker) at a chosen yard – some times without having arranged the employment for the vessel. The latter relates more to the PSV/AHTS types of ship than the more specialized vessels. But quite often the business in question starts with the Charterer/operator who has a particular project in mind. They have to find a Shipowner who is recognized for quality operation, and who has the financial muscles to contract the specific vessel required for the project. In comes the shipyard and/or designing company, and the ball starts rolling. The “2013 Ship of the Year” – M/V “Seven Viking”, see pages 18 and 76 – was a good example of such a process. The project was initiated by a frame contract between the End user and an Owner. The latter brought in another Owner who in turn ordered the vessel, giving the first Owner an option to acquire 50 percent of the newbuilding. The designing process involved both these parties plus the design company and the two shipyards (hull building respectively outfitting). In this way the Charterer/operator gets a vessel tailor-made for the intended requirement. The point of elaborating on the above is to emphasize the importance of having an acti-

ve and innovative shipping community involving all the parties in a shipbuilding process. Today’s tightly-knit pattern takes a long time to develop. But … the industry should not be too complacent – see “Norwegians abroad” below. New orders We do not pretend to hold information of all the incoming newbuilding orders, but our count should give a good indication of the activity in this sector. This shows a modest 26 new contracts and is a sharp reduction from 2012 when 62 new contracts were registered. 17 of the 2013 orders are for OSVs (vs. 35 delivered). A price guesstimate for new business in 2013 is a total of about NOK 17/18 billion compared to about NOK 23 billion in 2012. In other words, the decline in value is far smaller than the number of units should indicate.

To put the “Norwegian” figure in perspective, South Korea’s three big shipyards were at the end of December expecting to reach $50 billion (NOK 309 billion) worth of new orders in 2013, up from $37.4 billion in 2012. The record is from 2007 with $68.5 billion. Hyundai Heavy Industries alone secured about $24.3 billion (NOK 150bn) worth of new shipbuilding orders. The composition of the new orders at Norwegian yards is quite different from the two preceding years. Out goes the PSVs and in come instead the larger and more specialized types. The description of these vessels goes as follows: Diving Support and Construction – Offshore Construction – Offshore Subsea Construction – Offshore Subsea/IMR – Pipelay Support– Ice-breaking Offshore – Construction Service – Service Operation (for offshore windmill installations) – Expedition Support. It follows from the above that the average ship value is considerably higher than the year before. For instance some of the OSCV ships cost over NOK 800 million, – and in fact one OCV was contracted for NOK 1.4 billion. Furthermore, one order covered two pipelayers at ship price about NOK 1.7 billion. Price-wise it is therefore hard to compare the 2013 newbuilding prices with the year before due to the difference in types of ship – it would be a bit like comparing apples and pears. It is interesting to note that one yard in particular – Havyard – has been successful in obtaining orders from foreign Owners. This has contributed to the foreign share of the newbuilding orders reaching 28% based on number of ships. Norwegians abroad One is used to the fact that Norwegian Owners order cargo ships and specialized units like LNG carriers and drilling units abroad. 2013 has, as advised above, given en eye-opener for the domestic shipbuilding industry as far as building of fishing vessels are concerned. We can add to that that Norwegian Owners in 2013 ordered more OSVs to be built abroad than in Norway. To our knowledge some 25 new contracts were placed. In addition comes the large number of cost-
ly specialized constructions. Even without taking into account orders from foreignbased Seadrill, some high value Norwegian orders were lost to foreign yards. It is sufficient to mention the order from Norwegian Armed Forces for a logistic vessel worth some NOK 1.32 billion, Statoil’s Dagny order worth NOK 6.1 billion, DNO’s NOK 4 billion order for topside and Edda Accommodation’s order for one (option one) mono hull accommodation vessel designed by Salt Ship Design. Today it seems like size is a restricting factor for Norwegian shipyards. History tells us otherwise: 40/45 years ago Norwegian yards (in particular one – Aker Stord) built a series of 10 super tankers in sizes of 219,000 dwt (5 units) and 285,000 dwt (5 units) for Hilmar Reksten. Norway was in the lead competing with upcoming (at that time) shipbuilding nations like Japan and South Korea. The famous shipowner in fact also contracted four units of 420,000 dwt each in 1973 for delivery in 1977-78. However these should never see the light of day, – but that is another story. Chemical tankers With the benefit of hindsight one may question the timing for the decision to quit building of specialized tankers at the Florø yard. During 2008-10 the yard built six chemical tankers for Stolt-Nielsen, each about 45,000 dwt. 2013 has proven to be a year when many Norwegian (and other) shipowners have contracted new ships in this sector. Bergenbased JO Tankers, Stream and WestfalLarsen are among these. Above-mentioned Stolt-Nielsen ordered a series of five, plus three options, 38,000 dwt stainless steel parcel tankers at a Chinese yard with deliveries from December 2015 onwards. Furthermore both Odfjell and Stolt-Nielsen are becoming very active in the LPG sector. It is tempting to ask if some parts of shipbuilding have been neglected in Norway, and is this caused by the strong focus on offshore vessels? Ship design The trend from the previous years continued in 2013 whereby foreign yards build ships Shipbuilding Norway • Volume 18 - 2013

We have performs counted about 44 firm contracts placed The general impression today is that in 2013, and these there is an ongoing contracts hold close de-escalation within to 20 options. It is the shipbuilding illustrating that in industry in the Far December RollsKings Bay AS took delivery of the multi-purpose fishing vessel East (read: China) Royce Marine Kings Bay from Larsnes Mek. Rolls-Royce Ship design and systems thus shown time and time again that given the features strongly on the 2013 list, but also right circumstances speedy expansions will Ulstein Design & Solutions, Wärtsilä Ship take place. During the lengthy boom period, which culDesign and Skipsteknisk have been active on this front, and new design orders for building minated in a total collapse of the freight abroad have also be registered by Havyard markets in the 4th quarter of 2008, the flow Design & Solutions, Salt Ship Design, Marin of new orders for the shipyards was enormous and reached about 580 million dwt at Teknikk and Seacon. China is the major builder of these designs the end of 2008, equivalent to close to 50 perwith more than half of the new orders ending cent of the existing fleet. With the market situation turned upside up there, and the balance is spread between

down “over-night”, almost every shipping expert, including owners, brokers, analysts, banks and financiers forecast that a large proportion of the order book would never be delivered. How wrong they should be … Naturally cancellations and re-negotiations took place, but in volume very far from the “besserwisser” predictions. In fact the shipyards delivered ships equivalent to more than the whole orderbook of 2008 during the next 3-4 years. Even today the industry operates at about 80 percent of the peak level measured in Compensated Gross Tons. Who would have thought that five years ago? So all credit to the shipbuilders who have shown flexibility and been clever to diversify. And surprisingly to some, – 2013 has been a year when shipowners again have shown great faith in the old work horse, the bulk carrier, and placed new orders for over 900 ships – nearly a trebling in number from 2012. Actually, on a global basis many ship types experienced an upswing on the newbuilding front this year, and contrary to the development in Norway. Both Tankers and LPG ships were in vogue, and the same goes for Container ships. All these sectors increased by impressive numbers. Wild card “When China sneezes the rest of the world catches a cold”. This is particularly relevant for shipping, and a negative development in China could put the shipping markets’ future in jeopardy. Who was the party mainly “responsible” for the longest boom-time in history, which brought the shipping markets to unbelievably high levels, – and could the same nation also ruin the markets? Is there today any shipping sector, which is not influenced by China directly or indirectly? There is nothing new in asking such questions, but at the time of writing there are renewed fears about China’s debt levels. According to an official audit by China’s National Audit Office the local government debt levels have soared to almost $3 trillion, – an increase of almost 50 per cent in less than three years. Most other reports actual-
ly point to an increase of 70 per cent, according to Financial Times. Several parties in the country have worried about the amount of debt taken up by local governments, which are not allowed to tap banks directly, but establish special purpose vehicles to borrow money. As if this is not enough FT writes: “Most crucially, the major concern for China is corporate debt, which has surged to more than 100 per cent of GDP, unusually high by international standards. This did not show up as a contingent liability in the audit, but Chinese governments have consistently stood behind failing local champions, whether state-owned or private, meaning that many corporate debts could yet end up as public debts”. As Beijing now enforces fiscal discipline on local government borrowers, there are increasing fears of a hard landing. A representative of Bank of America Merrill Lynch expressed the view that the markets and the Chinese Government should be alarmed by the rapidly rising leverage. A senior Chinese auditor warned earlier in the year that local government borrowing was out of control and could spark a massive financial crisis. We should add that not many believe in such a drastic scenario becoming a reality, but as a reminder: Practically nobody saw the Asian financial crisis coming in 1997/98. The crisis struck “overnight” with serious consequences, and shipping was one of the sectors most hurt. zachs@skipsrevyen.no

SHIP OF THE YEAR 2013 M/V «SEVEN VIKING» – Inspection, Maintenance & Repair vessel built at Ulstein Verft Described as “the next generation IMR vessel” M/V «SEVEN VIKING» was delivered from Ulstein Verft AS, Ulsteinvik to Eidesvik Seven AS on 23 January 2013 as the Shipyard’s hull number 295. The naming ceremony took place on 30th January with Christine Sagen Helgø, the Mayor of Stavanger, as godmother. The vessel was designed and developed by Subsea 7, Eidesvik Shipping and Ulstein Design & Solutions AS with design type SX148, and the hull was built at JSC Zaliv Shipyard in Ukraina. With her striking features M/V «SEVEN VIKING» has a crew capacity of 90 and a top speed of 17.5 knots. The vessel is capable of operating in the harshest offshore environments.
years frame contract between Statoil and Subsea 7 – with 2 x 1 year extension options, the value of which was stated both as about NOK 2 billion, including options, and about US$260million (probably for the firm period). The contract between Subsea 7 and Eidesvik Offshore covers a period of 8 years valued at about NOK one billion. The deal included an option for Subsea 7 to purchase 50 percent in the vessel, which was to be contracted. Eidesvik ordered the new IMR vessel at Ulstein Yard in February 2011, and the contract price was then given as about NOK 800 million. In March 2012 Subsea 7 exercised the option to acquire 50 percent in the newbuilding contract. The new owning company for the vessel was thus to be Eidesvik Seven AS.

SHIP OF THE YEAR 2012 Built by STX OSV Langsten for owners Farstad Shipping ASA, the unique offshore platform service vessel FAR SOLITAIRE w1as declared Ship of the Year 2012 by Norwegian State Secretary of Trade and Industry, Mr. Halvard Ingebrigtsen, at SMM in Hamburg 5 September 2012.
The offshore oil industry has over the years become more and more dependent on chemicals and noxious liquids in order to improve operational efficiency and maintain safety standards. At the same time, restrictions for offshore disposal of the same have become more stringent for environmental reasons.
“FAR SOLITAIRE is a chemical tanker compliant supply vessel which is the main reason for why the jury elected this vessel as Ship of the Year 2012,” said Asle Strønen, jury member and Publisher of Skipsrevyen. “Thus she is capable to undertake all aspects of offshore platform services. The technologically advanced vessel has been developed by Farstad Shipping ASA in close cooperation with Rolls-Royce Marine and is the first PSV of this type ever built (solitaire – one of a kind). She is yet not delivered from the yard. Delivery will take place in October 2012.
In the next turn these liquids need to be transported to and from the offshore installations, which means need of capable Platform Supply Vessels fit for this purpose. However, a conventional Offshore Supply Vessel defined by the rules as a Cargo Vessel is limited to carry maximum 800 cubic meters of these liquids on board at a time, which often is insufficient for the Operator and do not utilise the vessels over all capacity. Other features highlighted by the jury is her wave-piercing bow design, the development of a new cargo rail crane concept for PSVs

and the introduction of the frequency converter for the swing up thruster as power supply for shore power. During the project development Rolls-Royce was challenged by Farstad to pay high attention to the impact on the environment the construction and operation of this vessel would cause through its lifespan. SHIP OF THE YEAR 2009
His Majesty King Harald V was eager to learn about “Far Samson”. From left Mr. Børge Nakken, Farstad Shipping; Mr. Steinar Nerbøvik, STX Norway Offshore Langsten; Mr. Asle Strønen, Skipsrevyen; King Harald V; Mr. Jørn Heltne, Rolls-Royce Marine; and Mrs. Rikke Lind, State Secretary of the Norwegian Departement of Trade and Industry who made the presentations. In 2009 His Majesty King Harald V handed over Skipsrevyen’s Ship of the Year awards to the ship’s Captain, Owner, Designer and Building yard at the Nor-Shipping exhibition in Oslo. M/V “Far Samson”, a UT 761 CD design, was delivered from STX Norway Offshore AS Langsten to the Owners, Farstad Construction AS, Ålesund. The Multifunctional Plough, Tug, Supply, Subsea Service Vessel was described as the most powerful offshore vessel which had been built to date. She is purpose built for seabed pipeline trenching, pulling a remote controlled plough on the seabed laying pipeline into an up to 2.5m deep ditch. The plough of about 200 tons can be pulled in water depths down to about 1,000m. A separate plough is used to backfill the trench.
SHIP OF THE YEAR 2008 The offshore service vessel “Island Wellserver”, owned by the Norwegian company Island Offshore and built by Aker Yards ASA, Langsten (now STX Norway Offshore AS Langsten), was declared Ship of the Year 2008 by the Norwegian State Secretary Mrs. Rikke Lind at the SMM 2008 exhibition in Hamburg, Germany. – “Island Wellserver” is a subsea riserless oil and gas well intervention vessel, and repre-
sents new technology in the offshore market. She also introduces new standards for working environment, safety and comfort, according to jury member Mr. Rolf Sæther. The other two jurymembers, Mr. Birger Skår and Mr. Asle Strønen, stated that this purpose designed vessel fulfils the latest rules and regulations for being an Installation, working on the Norwegian continental shelf. – By doing this service and fulfilling all these requirements, this vessel is unique, and therefore a natural choiche for the jury electing Ship of the Year 2008. “Island Wellserver” was the result of a vision that the the subsea well intervention market should be served by a vessel, instead of a drilling rig which so far had been the case.

SHIP OF THE YEAR 2007
Receiving the Ship of the Year prize at Nor-Shipping 2007 June 12th: From left: CEO Gunvor Ulstein at the Ulstein Group, Sales Manager Egil Sandvik of Vik Sandvik, Minister of Trade and Industry Dag Terje Andersen, Editor Asle Strønen of Skipsrevyen, CEO Lars Peder Solstad of Solstad Offshore ASA and Captain Kjetil Sørstrønen of “Normand Seven”.
Built by Ulstein Verft for owners Solstad Offshore ASA, the unique offshore construction vessel NORMAND SEVEN was declared Ship of the Year 2007 by Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Dag Terje Andersen, at Nor-Shipping 2007. NORMAND SEVEN is a large stateof-the art vessel, capable to undertake all aspects of offshore construction and installation works. The vessel is designed by Vik-Sandvik in close cooperation with the Owners and is of VS 4220 OCV design. This is the second time a vessel built by Ulstein Verft wins the prize. Last year’s winner, BOURBON ORCA, was also built by Ulstein. NORMAND SEVEN is however a bigger ship, in fact the largest ever built by Ulstein and she is an example of a complex project that has contributed to raise the level of the yard’s shipbuilding expertise.
SHIP OF THE YEAR 2006 M/V “Bourbon Orca”, the first Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessel of ULSTEIN AX104 design with ULSTEIN X-BOW and built by Ulstein Verft AS, was elected Skipsrevyens Ship of the Year 2006. The ceremony took place at the SMM 2006 Exhibition in Hamburg in September. M/V «BOURBON ORCA» is the final product of a collaboration between Bourbon Offshore, Ulstein Design and ODIM and has several special features, like the X-Bow, the Odim SAHS and the diesel electric propulsion system. The inverted bow is a striking feature. The bow stemline is pulled back, and the hull reaches the bridge deck. When the X-Bow ship enters a wave, the foreship’s submerged volume immediately increases, and the retardation forces are distributed over an extended period of time. This results in lower acceleration/retardation levels. The advantages for the crew with better working and safety conditions and greater comforts in terms of noise, vibration and stability is striking.

SHIP OF THE YEAR 2004 Aker Langsten AS, Tomrefjord (Aker Yards) delivered in 2004 a Platform Supply Vessel of a complete new design by Norwegian company Vik-Sandvik, VS 493 Avant, to her Owners Eidesvik Shipping AS, Bømlo as the yard’s Hull No. 197. M/V «VIKING AVANT» is built with bridge and engine aft, contrary to all previously built PSVs. Due to her innovations this ship was elected Ship of the Year 2004 by the Nordic shipping magazine Skipsrevyen. Mr. Andreas Gaarder, Norway’s chargé d’affaires to Germany, performed the handing over of Skipsrevyen’s awards for 2004 to the ship’s captain, owner, building yard and designer at the SMM exhibition in Hamburg.
SHIP OF THE YEAR 2003 The “G.O. SARS” was awarded SKIPSREVYEN’s “SHIP OF THE YEAR” for 2003. Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Ansgar Gabrielsen, announced the prize as he opened the Nor-Shipping 2003 Exhibition on 3rd June. The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) and the University of Bergen (UiB) joined forces when ordering the new fishery research vessel “G.O. SARS”, which is possibly the most advanced research vessel in the world. The vessel was christened by Her Majesty Queen Sonja on the 7th of May 2003 in Bergen, but was handed over from Flekkefjord Slipp & Maskinfabrikk AS to the Owners already on the 25th April 2003.
SHIP OF THE YEAR 2002 The new pride of the Norwegian Navy KV «Svalbard» – a 103 meters 6300 tonnes icegoing Coast Guard Vessel built by Langsten AS – was delivered from the yard on the 18th of January 2002. Described as the world’s most sophisticated Coast Guard Vessel KV «Svalbard» received SKIPSREVYEN’s SHIP OF THE YEAR award at SMM 2002. Mr Oluf Ulseth, Undersecretary of State of the Norwegian Ministry of Trade and Industry handed over the awards to the ship’s captain, owner and buildingyard.

SHIP OF THE YEAR 2001 HM King Harald is congratulating captain Ola S. Harsheim of «The World» with SKIPSREVYEN’s «SHIP OF THE YEAR 2001» award. To his right Ms Anna Synnøve Bye, CEO and owner of the building yard Fosen Mek. Verksteder AS. With «The World» as «SHIP OF THE YEAR» Norway entered the Super League of shipbuilding – The Cruise Ship Building Nations. An important step in order to strengthen Norway’s position as a leading shipbuilding nation within all segments of highly complex and sophisticated specialised tonnage.
SHIP OF THE YEAR 2000 In 2000 the world’s first LNG fuelled ferry – M/F «Glutra» – was elected SHIP OF THE YEAR, built by Langsten AS for Norwegian owner Møre og Romsdal Fylkesbåtar AS. The vessel is a technological innovation in a relatively conventional shape. «Glutra» is one of the world’s most environmental friendly vessels when it comes to emissions to air and sea. E.g. the NOx emission is redused by 90 per cent. The handing over of SKIPSREVYEN’S awards was performed at SMM in Hamburg by Ms. Grete Knudsen, Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry (right).
SHIP OF THE YEAR 1999 In 1999 the extremely advanced seismic research ship «Geco Eagle», owned by Geco-Prakla and delivered from Bergenbased Mjellem & Karlsen Verft AS, was presented with the «SHIP OF THE YEAR» award. The ship represented a new generation of integrated seismic vessels. Once again the event took place as part of the official opening ceremony at NorShipping in Oslo. The handing over of the prices was performed by Mr. Lars Sponheim, then Norway’s Minister of Trade and Industry. As the case had been in 1997, also in 1999 H.M. King Harald (centre) took the time to greet the representatives of the Ship, the Owners and the Building yard.

Jemar Norpower AS is producing customized workboats for tugging, cargo, crew change, inspections and oil spill recovery. Main characteristics: • Fast • Solid • Stable • Reliable
Jemar Norpower AS is a longtime producer of strong and speedy workboats for seismic vessels, oil companies, fish farming and harbors. Currently three models are available: 23ft, 26ft and 30ft. All models have GRP hulls with a keel that gives the workboats their well-known stability and sharp maneuvering. The propulsion system consists of a strong diesel engine (200425HP), a solid marine gear and an 800mm propeller. The workboats have a unique combination of speed and strength. The 30ft model reaches a top speed of 24 knots, and the same boat has a bollard pull of more than three tons making it probably the speediest tugboat in the world! The Jemar Norpower workboats are renowned for their seaworthiness, solidity and stability. They can be used for
numerous purposes and are especially suited for tugging, inspections, cargo, crew change and oil spill recovery. A Jemar Norpower workboat will get you quickly to your destination and get the job done in a safe way also in rough weather. You can transport equipment/cargo on deck or take with you up to 11 passengers. The solid boats can operate in shallow waters and close to land as well as on the open sea. Towing points, cranes and winches may be mounted for lifting and tugging. Solid fenders on the railing give the workboats protection and watertight compartments below deck secure that a workboat will not sink even with the engine room filled with water.

The Drammen Yard Carousels are now in operation around the world on different ships and barges. The package is perfect for installation on offshore vessels. Cable laying is electronically controlled according to industry standards, and the carousel can be partitioned into several separate sections to lay different cables in one deployment. If assembly at Drammen Yard is inconvenient, we bring the package on transport barge to alternative sites and deploy our personnel there. Carousels of 2000 tons and more can be lifted in place with product pre loaded. This rugged and simple design comes in various sizes from 300 to 9000 tons capacity. Each ready and duly certified by Det Norske Veritas.

Willy Maritime Furniture & Interior Collection Designers, seamen and interior boatbuilders have together, in Vestnes Ocean, created a furniture collection especially for seafaring vessels. The WILLY Furniture Collection is inspired by the smooth shapes of the orca – the low drawers are rounded, providing more floor-space for the feet and the doors are soft, making corners inoffensive. The interior materials of the cabin come together with the furniture in a thought throw collection, making it easy to choose the whole look of the ship. Discover this new system of cabin design through the Willy collection books. Please contact us for more information or to place an order.
