Restructuring, mergers and buy outs the new phrases for offshore shipowners and -builders The offshore sector has for years dominated the Norwegian maritime market. With the fall in oil prices offshore related businesses collapse. All other sectors have been influenced by the cost accelerating dynamics within offshore. Prices has gone up, and we have seen the development as a healthy sign for a booming Norwegian economy. In times with a gentle breeze and good tailwind we Norwegians have praised offshore shipowners for being the foundation for the growth of Maritime Norway. And rightly so. The offshore shipping companies are important for the entire maritime value chain; shipbuilders, designers, equipment suppliers and maritime services. The Norwegian companies have the world’s second-largest offshore fleet. These shipping companies are tightly integrated with small coastal communities and are crucial for employment and value creation in Norway’s regions. A slowdown – or shutdown – scenario therefore hits hard locally. Until the current crisis emerged we hadn’t given the “dark side of the moon” any thoughts. Now we see what happens when the single most important motor in the cluster breaks down. The crisis in the offshore industry has hit much harder and faster than anyone could have predicted. Even though the contracting rate for new vessels worldwide has slowed down, overcapacity with the current orderbook, if everything is delivered, will reach 500-600 vessels or 15-20 percent. Supply is bigger than demand and market balance is far, far away. Ship owners obviously are their own worst enemy. This mismatch also infuences yard activities and demand for ships’ equipment.

Therefore, the new phrase for the offshore shipowners and shipyards is restructuring. In worst case they risk bankruptcies. We foresee a near future with mergers and buy outs. The Norwegian offshore services sector is mostly located on the west coast and most of the communities are rather small. A culture for sharing experiences gained from operations at sea with corporate head offices and then passed on to domestic shipyards that build vessels for these companies safe locked relations across the value chain and benefitted Norwegian competetiveness. This further highlights the human aspect of making cost cuts that affect staff in general and of redundancies in particular. This is not only a financial crisis, it’s more structural. And it casts dark shadows over the whole offshore value chain; i.e. shipyards which have bet all cards on the offshore industry. They bleed, and it will get worse. The next question is; who will survive? Our guess is that the industry ends up sleeker and stronger – with fewer participants. No doubt the current market situation reflects the extremely challenging conditions facing stakeholders, and the situation continues to deteriorate. We’re seeing voluntary reductions in wages and work hours from the employees, a sign telling us that the industry either is sick or has been feverish – both no good. The lack in market balance as mentioned above, is possible to explain but difficult to anticipate. At least three unpredictable elements acting simultaneously have turned the market up side down: Oil prices are at a bottom low and oil companies across the globe are slashing

Editor Asle B. Strønen sees mergers and buy outs as a neccessary outcome of the current offshore market situation.

their activities. Sanctions against Russia has eliminated a large market for the Norwegian offshore sector. The comprehensive corruption scandal involving Brazilian Petrobras has sent many Norwegian vessels out of the market. This situation where offshore shipowners sinks deeper and deeper into debt affects their ability to take delivery of vessels due to be handed over. This again influences the shipyards cashflow, will they fall like dominoes? Probably not. Some might, but the economics amongst shipbuilders are reasonable good. But a quick look at Skipsrevyen’s list of orders at Norwegian shipyards (pages 82-84) reveals delays and postponements. Sure, the industry will survive and it will be able to meet tomorrows demands for a greener future, but it will also be sleeker and more cost effective. abs

“Blue Growth for a Green Future” The maritime industry is among Norway’s most global, innovative and forward-looking industries. Its employment rate, value creation and spillover to other industries make it an important driving force in Norwegian business and industry. The A large part of the Norwegian maritime industry is closely intertwined with the offshore oil and gas industry. Norwegian ship owners control the world’s secondlargest offshore fleet, and offshore vessels have been dominating the order book at Norwegian yards for years. When oil companies across the world are decreasing their activities, it severely affects the offshore oriented ship owners, yards and equipment manufactures. The Norwegian Government launched a maritime strategy in May 2015, called “Maritime opportunities - Blue Growth for a Green Future”. The strategy gives an overview of the main priorities for the Norwegian maritime policy and measures to be implemented. I am pleased to notice that the strategy has been well perceived by the industry. The main priorities of the Government’s commitment to the maritime industry are: trade areas, environment, maritime administration, competence and education, research, development and innovation, international regulatory frameworks, blue growth, and the High North. I want to highlight two of the central topics of the strategy: environmental friendly shipping and blue growth. We have an untapped potential both with regard to making shipping greener and by developing new and employ known technologies across the ocean based industries. Norway has six times larger area in the ocean than on land. In other words, there is no doubt that we are an ocean nation, and we have high competence and a strong professional environment in the ocean industries. Norway’s most important ocean industries measured by

global environment for the maritime industry is changing rapidly. International regulations, technological progress and global competition are the main contributors in shaping the challenges the industry encounter.

their contribution to value creation are the oil and gas industry, the maritime industry and the seafood industry. The Government wish to develop a strong ocean cluster by stimulating increased interaction between these industries. By developing new and applying known technology across the ocean space we can utilize the potential for future growth and value creation in the industries. The technology and experience from the mature ocean industries can also be extended to new emerging ocean industries, such as mineral extraction on the seabed, renewable energy from the sea, marine ingredient industry, and marine bioprospecting. In the years to come the maritime industry has an important role to play to contribute to sustainable economic growth internationally by developing and adopting more environmentally friendly technology, practices and business models. The government will stimulate green growth for the maritime industry as well as the use of environmental technology solutions and green fuels. Norway is currently leading in the development and use of gas-powered vessels and battery powered ferries. This leading position can be utilized and developed further. Going greener is important both from the climate and environmental perspective, but it also gives businesses a competitive advantage in the global market place. With the tightening requirements on emissions from international and national regulators, new green technologies will be at demand – and shipping will become greener and more energy efficient.

Ms. Monica Mæland Minister of Trade and Industry.

and new markets is key to continued success. I believe that the Norwegian maritime cluster will adapt to today’s challenges and take advantage of new possibilities, - as they have done before. The maritime industry will remain one of the most important contributors to Norwegian value creation and employment in the future! For 50 years, Nor-Shipping has provided a platform for the maritime world to explore the future. I am looking forward to next year’s exhibition, where I am sure that both environmental friendly shipping and blue growth will be high on the agenda.

Shipbuilding in Norway – at a crossroad?

The years when Norwegian shipbuilders were in the lead for building OSV’s, are they over? Here the hull of Yard No 830 arriving at Vard Brattvaag. She is due for delivery in June 2016.

2015 became in many ways a disastrous has to go a long way back to find a simiyear for Norwegian shipbuilding, and one lar situation. Down went the number of both Ships delivered and New orders signed. The years when Norwegian shipbuilders were in the lead for building OSV’s seem to be over, and this market has eventually become truly international, – same as the position for commercial vessels has always been. In view of this, and taking into account the latest development of the whole offshore market, a relevant question to pose is whether we at the moment are in a cyclical down period, or whether the changes are of a more structural character. If the first is the case, then the yards and shipowners must bide their time in the certainty that good times will reappear. If the latter, structural, the situation is far more serious, and tough measures are to be taken. The next couple of years will give us the answer. Hopefully today’s situation is not comparable to the one we had nine years ago,

4

SKIPSREVYEN 1/2016

– at that time it concerned ocean going fishing vessels. We wrote then ”Is it just a pause or something more structural”. The developments since then are clear enough – will we ever again see 40 vessels of this type delivered within one calendar year? On the same line, we have repeatedly asked what the shipbuilding industry would do if the orders from the offshore sector should disappear for some reason. With 10 years of uninterrupted growth in the OSV market, the industry never had to take such a scenario seriously, – until now?

As far as the offshore market is concerned, 2015 saw a lethal combination of plenty of newbuilt ships delivered from the yards and drastically reduced activity on the chartering market resulting in a falling number of new shipyard orders.

This led to heaps of ships looking for employment in vain, which in turn led to a steadily increasing number of ships entering lay-up, – a responsible action on the part of the Owners. Another way to take the vessels out of the market is to sell them for demolition. The number of ships phased out this way increased in 2015, but the total volume was very modest. Considering that the average age of the vessels sold to demolition yards in 2015 was about 35 years, there are obviously plenty of old vessels still afloat ripe for making the last journey. At the time of writing there are no signs of an immediate turn-around on the Demand side, but since the OSV market now is truly international one can find some comfort in the fact that 18% fewer newbuildings of the AHTS, PSV and other offshore units entered the market compared to 2014, – and furthermore,

contracting of new ships fell by impressive 75%. This caused the orderbook to drop with 53% (figures from Clarksons Research). Several charterers have cancelled charters or failed to exercise options, and some have unilaterally “thrown in the towel”. Besides, the protectionism is showing in all its ugliness, where Brazil’s Petrobras can be taken as one example. This company has been an important

Charterer in the whole offshore field, that being rigs or vessels. The country is facing a growing fiscal crunch as the end of an economic boom fuelled by high commodities prices and credit growth leads to falls in investment. This gives repercussions also to the shipping and offshore fields, and the consequences are being seen now. So far the situation has gotten gradually worse, and the end of the story has not been shown yet.

The upshot of the protectionism is that foreign Shipowners who trade their ships purely on quality of the fleet and its operation are losing out on several occasions. In previous reports we have toyed around with some “wild cards” (scary scenarios which could happen, but probably not). Unfortunately two of these started to show in 2014, and in last year’s editorial we wondered:

The single largest order placed in 2015 at a Norwegian yard was done by ABB at Kleven Verft.

“Both these ’low-probability, high-impact’ scenarios became realities in 2014 (only to some extent as far as China is concerned), and 2015 will give the wider consequences of these.“ Well, 2015 certainly did, and both Oil and China went from bad to worse with wide-ranging repercussions. The fall in the value of NOK alleviated some of the damages, but only to a certain degree. Searching for positive news on the world economy it is hard to find basis for optimism. It is a well known fact that Chinese government statistics must be taken with a pinch of salt, but despite of this it seems clear that the growth is slipping. In fact the country’s economic growth in 2015 was the lowest in 25 years. However the nation is regardless of utmost importance, and China is still the biggest contributor to world growth. High hopes have been put on USA, but the growth seems to be stalling. Both Brazil and Russia operates with negative growth.

A recent Mackenzie study reported that development of 68 significant projects, or 27 bn barrels of oil equivalent in reserves, has been put back, meaning that nearly $400 bn of spending on new oil and gas projects have been shelved since the crude price collapse. Now, one really has to hope that some unforeseen and positive developments will turn up. The hard facts The situation has been worse – the heading of the editorial in Shipbuilding Norway 13 years ago ran: ”Will Norwegian shipbuilding survive? At the beginning of 2003 Norwegian yards had newbuilding orders for less than NOK 4 billion compared to NOK 35 billion two years earlier”. According to Norske Skipsverft (Norwegian Shipbuilders, nssm.no) today’s figure is NOK 29.5 billion, down from NOK

34.1 bn a year ago. In any case considerably better than when 2003 started. But it is never nice to witness declining figures. In 2015 Skipsrevyen presented 20 newbuildings in the Offshore Service Vessels sector compared to 35 in 2014. As before, the count comprises Platform Supply Vessels, Anchor handlers, specialized vessels for Construction and Subsea works, Seismic ships and other vessels with special features. The yards in question are Vard Group, Kleven/Myklebust, Havyard, Ulstein, Simek, Fjellstrand and NorYards Fosen. We can add that the peak years were 2008 and 2009 when more than 50 such ships were built and/or outfitted at Norwegian yards. It is worth noting that the foreign Owners’ share of the new ships continued to increase, – now to 30%, up from 18% the preceding year and 23% the year before.

Other sectors While the interest in building Live Fishing Vessels is booming Skipsrevyen presented only one newbuilding delivery of this type in 2015 («Øytind» from Aas Mek. Verksted, pls. see page ??) compared to 4 in 2014. The number of Fishing Vessels declined from 5 in 2014 to 3 in 2015. The building of this type vessel abroad seems to be declining with 4 units this year, down from 8 and 11 the preceding years. Does this give hope for more activity at home the coming years? The Ferry market was not particularly active with only 2 new units from domestic shipyards, – unchanged from 2014. The Fast Passenger Catamarans sector, however, continued the upward trend from 2014, with 10 new vessels in 2015. It appears that the sector “Service vessels for offshore wind farms” has not taken off as far as Norwegian yards are concerned. Two big vessels (Esvagt) were delivered and one of smaller size. This is down from 4 respectively 7 units the years before. Skipsrevyen has presented 27 Work boats, unchanged from 2014. We should add that the actual number is higher, and some yards have been (and are) fully booked.

It is interesting to note the interest for a larger type of service catamaran with length over 24 metres and beam of 11.512 m. Skipsrevyen presented 6 units of this type during the year built at Grovfjord, Moen Marin, Salthammer, Vaagland respectively Sletta (the largest one with length of 40m). As was the case in previous years, the yards building smaller Coastal fishing vessels do not seem to be keen to get much publicity, and only 4 new vessels were covered by Skipsrevyen in 2015. The total number of newbuildings presented in Skipsrevyen in 2015 comes to 79 vessels (90 in 2014) delivered from 30 individual Norwegian shipyards. Adding several coastal fishing vessels and work boats the actual number built must be over 90, maybe close to 100. Built abroad During 2015 Skipsrevyen presented 23 newbuildings delivered from foreign yards to Norwegian Owners. Perhaps one should add that the actual number built for Norwegian account is considerably higher, but only occasionally have Cargo ships been presented in 2015. It is a fact that Norwegian Owners are active contractors of newbuildings

abroad. Recently we checked the number of orders placed at foreign shipyards and arrived at 174 new units. This covers ship types as tankers, bulk carriers, LPG carriers, LNG, car carriers, container vessels, ferries, general cargo vessels and cement carriers. These orders came from as many as 40 shipping companies, and the building will take place primarily in South Korea and China, but also in Croatia, The Netherlands, U.S.A and Turkey. Tankers and bulk carriers have been dominating the ship type picture, but recently LPG and LNG carriers have been on the rise. New orders We do not pretend to hold information of all the incoming newbuilding orders to Norwegian yards, but our count should give a good indication of the activity in this sector. We registered a total of 34 new orders with a total value in excess of NOK 11 billion. The respective numbers for 2014 were 40 and NOK 19 bn. The top year in this respect was 2012 with 62 new orders valued at about $23 billion. The offshore sector has been dominating for the last ten years, but has now got some competition from the Live fish carrier segment. So while only one wellboat

was built in 2015, a total of 9 newbuildings (1 in 2014) were contracted at domestic yards representing 29% of the new orders. The OSV sector’s share which was responsible for 80% of the news contracts in 2014, has been reduced to 24%. Value-wise the single largest order in 2015 was placed at Kleven by ABB for an advanced cable-layer to be custom-built to ABB specifications. The vessel is designed by Salt Ship Design. While the price has not been stated, speculations indicate a figure of about NOK one billion.

Export advantage In last year’s edition of Shipbuilding Norway we raised the currency situation as a probable cause for the bigger international share of the new orders at Norwegian yards, and with 47% share this year it shows that the weak NOK definitely has helped the shipyards – in addition to the recognized quality of “built in Norway”. Foreign Owners even come to Norway for building of large trawlers which promises well for the future.

The figures given above means that average ship value for the new 2015 contracts was about NOK 326 million, down from 475m in 2014 and 673m for 2013. The 2015-figure is closer to the average for 2011 and 2012 which was about NOK 360-370 million.

Design In 2012 there was an impressive 75 newbuilding contracts to be built basis Norwegian design at foreign shipyards. The number fell to 44 firm contracts in 2013 and improved to 51 in 2014. In line with the declining market activity 2015

We have registered Havyard Design & Solutions and Skipsteknisk with 2 orders each while according to our records Ulstein Design & Solutions, Møre Maritime and Rolls- Royce have won one order each in 2015. The ships in question will be built in China (8), Turkey (4), Spain (2), Brazil (1), Denmark (1), Tasmania (1) and Russia (1 plus). We shall not be boring the readers again with our ”shoot in the foot” warnings regarding shipyards selling design to foreign (read Chinese) shipbuilders ... j Finally we like to refer again to the ”wild card” in the 2013 issue: ”When China sneezes the rest of the world catches a cold”. Two years later we can truly say that the patient has unfortunately gotten sicker, so what happens to the rest of the world now?

New zero emissions ferry concept

The new innovative ferry concept.

A complete concept for a series of innovative and cost effective shuttle ferries, featuring zero or low emissions, is being launched by Wärtsilä. The concept has been developed in line with the Norwegian government’s new environmental regulations for ferries emphasising the elimination of harmful emissions. This trend is also evident in a number of other countries. The concept has been developed through cooperation between Wärtsilä’s Ship Design and Electrical & Automation offices. The design characteristic focuses on high energy efficiency with low resistance, both above and below the water line. The ferries are designed to run entirely on batteries or in a battery-engine hybrid configuration where the fuel options are liquefied natural gas (LNG) or biofuel. In plug-in operation, the fuel consumption is reduced by 100 percent

compared to conventional installations, and all local emissions are completely eliminated. With the plug-in hybrid configuration, emissions are reduced by up to 50 percent. The concept features Wärtsilä’s new wireless inductive charging system, which for typical shuttle ferry operations involving 20,000 or more departures a year, is considered a notable benefit because of its time and energy savings. The system eliminates physical cable connections, thus reducing wear and tear and enabling charging to begin immediately when the vessel arrives at quay.

Bridge with a modern lay-out.

The design also encompasses a complete electrical and automation package based on the company’s battery/hybrid solution. It also includes Wärtsilä azimuth propulsion units and a complete bridge control system. The ferry series can accommodate 60 to 120 cars on a single car deck for quick and easy loading and unloading. In addition to this design concept for newbuilds, Wärtsilä can also provide battery and hybrid solutions for retrofitting existing ferry propulsion units in order to meet the new regulations. u

– all-electric car ferry elected Ship of the Year 2014

The car ferry «PROJECT 1696», or ZeroCat 120, which at the time of writing is under construction at Fjellstrand AS, is due to be delivered in 4th quarter of 2014 to the Owners, Norled AS, and start operation on 1st January 2015. Due to her high degree of innovation and ground-breaking features, she is elected Ship of the Year 2014 by the Norwegian trade journal Skipsrevyen. The handing over of the prizes to the owners, designers and building yard will be performed by the Norwegian State Secretary Dilek Ayhan on Wednesday September 10th at SMM 2014 in Hamburg.

– ZeroCat 120

SKIPSREVYEN 1/2016

The electrically powered ferry was developed for submission to a competition organized by Norway’s Ministry of Transport. As a reward for winning the competition, the shipping company Norled has been granted the license to operate the route until 2025. Norled won the 10 years contract to build and operate the world’s first battery driven ferry on the Lavik-Oppedal route back in 2012. Battery operation The amount of electric power required in such a short time is far beyond the capacity of the electrical grid serving in the villages of Lavik and Oppedal. The solution was to install battery buffers at both ports. These batteries can be continuously charged from the grid with 250 kW, then rapidly provide a quick dump to the ferry’s batteries. During night, the ferry has a period of seven hours for top-charging of the batteries. For one crossing under normal condiF

tions operating at a speed of 10 knots, battery power of only 150-200 kWh is needed, thus providing a wide safety margin. Compared to a standard diesel ferry serving the same route, the electric ferry will save about one million litres of fuel annually, as well as preventing 570 tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. ZeroCat built at Fjellstrand does not discharge greenhouse gases, CO2, methane or nitrogen oxides to the environment. In addition to the environmental benefits, the ferry’s operational and maintenance costs will be lower compared to a conventional ferry.

M/V «PROJECT 1696» The ZeroCat has DNV GL class @1A1, LC, R4(nor), CAR FERRY C, BATTERY POWER. The Battery Power notation is mandatory for vessels that use batteries as one of the main – or the sole – source of energy for propulsion. u F

Proud winners: From left Edmund Tolo, Ivar Gaute Kolltveit (both Fjellstrand), State Secretary Ms. Dilek Ayhan, Sigvald Breivik and Ivan Fossan (both Norled).

Built by Ulstein Verft for owners Solstad Offshore ASA, the unique offshore construction vessel NORMAND SEVEN was declared Ship of the Year 2007 by Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr. Dag Terje Andersen, at Nor-Shipping 2007. NORMAND SEVEN is a large stateof-the art  vessel, capable to undertake   all aspects of offshore construction and F installation works. The vessel is designed by Vik-Sandvik in close cooperation with the Owners and is of VS 4220 OCV design. This is the second time a vessel built by Ulstein Verft wins the prize. Last year’s winner, BOURBON ORCA, was also built by Ulstein. NORMAND SEVEN is however a bigger ship, in fact the largest ever built by Ulstein and she is an example of a complex project that has contributed to raise the level of the yard’s shipbuilding expertise.

M/V “Bourbon Orca”, the first Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessel of ULSTEIN AX104 design with ULSTEIN X-BOW and built by Ulstein Verft AS, was elected Skipsrevyens Ship of the Year 2006. The ceremony took place at the SMM 2006 Exhibition in Hamburg in September. M/V «BOURBON ORCA» is the final product of a collaboration between Bourbon Offshore, Ulstein Design and ODIM and has several special features, like the X-Bow, the Odim SAHS and the diesel electric propulsion system. The inverted bow  is a striking feature.  The bow stemline is pulled back, and the hull reaches the F bridge deck. When the X-Bow ship enters a wave, the foreship’s submerged volume immediately increases, and the retardation forces are distributed over an extended period of time. This results in lower acceleration/retardation levels. The advantages for the crew with better working and safety conditions and greater comforts in terms of noise, vibration and stability is striking.

2015 On the next pages, 28–71, we list all vessels delivered from Norwegian shipyards during 2015 which are presented in the 2015 issues of Skipsrevyen. This is a to-the-point and informative overview of what Norwegian yards are capable of building.

The Norwegian fleet has never had more advanced ships and they create value for a record 160 billion a year. The Norwegian maritime cluster is a complete and a significant international player in the value chain. Norway has one of the world’s largest and most modern fleets. Nearly 1 900 Norwegian controlled vessels and rigs operate worldwide. Half of the Norwegian fleet engaged in the transport of goods and people, while the other half are working on offshore oil and gas worldwide. The more demanding and advanced the maritime operations, the larger the market share held by Norway.

Skipsrevyen has published the SHIPBUILDING NORWAY editions since 1995 and thereby given our readers a complete survey over the activities at the Norwegian shipbuilding industries. One should keep in mind that this waste amount of vesseles delivered, represent the competence of the whole Norwegian maritime cluster, i.e. the demanding ship owning companies, the frontrunners of ship designers and the whole product- and supplychain. shipbuildingnorway.com – shipoftheyear.com – skipsrevyen.no

OMBYGGINGER It was a day to celebrate when Boreal Transport Nord christened six vessel on the same day in Hammerfest in January 2016. The picture above shows the ferries “Hasvik” and “Bergsfjord” built at Fiskerstrand Verft and delivered to Boreal Transport Nord recently. Due to one of the ferry terminals close proximity to a local airport, the ferries’ air draft is stricktly limited by the aviation authorities giving the vessels a distinct look. Boreal Transport Nord AS operates several ferry services in the Finnmark County. The services are ordered by Finnmark County Council and Boreal Transport Nord AS is the operator. Boreal Transport Norway AS is one of the largest Norwegian transportation companies.

livered to Havyard Group. Following the delivery from the yard the vessel started on a long-term contract with Oppdretternes Miljøservice (OMS). The Havyard 587 design is a further development of Live Fish Carrier «FS Stormy» which was built at Havyard in 2014. Norsk Fisketransport (NFT) subsequently acquired the company which ordered that vessel. «FS Stormy», now «Havtrans», was a prototype with innovative new cylindrical tanks system. With circular tanks, one can control the currents in the tanks in a completely new way, which means that the water quality is very homogenous throughout the tank. Busy times for drybulk operator Berge Bulk (moving mountains) • «Berge Heng Shan» 216,461 dwt delivered in June 2015, «Berge Tai Shan» – sister vessel (described as the world’s largest bulk carriers) • «Berge Makalu» 262,000 dwt ore carrier delivered January 2016, «Berge K2» – sister vessel delivered September 2015 • «Berge Asahidake» 34,000 dwt delivered January 2016, «Berge Hakodate» and «Berge Daisetsu» – sister vessels Berge Bulk seems to be in the midst of a heavy extension program and have recently taken delivery of several large bulk- and ore carriers, and in addition ships in the handysize segment. The 262,000 dwt size «BERGE K2» and «BERGE MAKALU» were taken over in September 2015 respectively January 2016 from Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in Longxue, China as the first two in the series of four sister ships. The price for «BERGE MAKALU» has been reported as $57 million. Both ships have long term cargo contracts with BHP Billiton carrying iron ore from Port Hedland in Australia to China under the flag of Isle of Man. As part of Berge Bulk’s on-going “Blue Matters” environmental campaign, the

vessels are fitted with a variety of ecofriendly equipment. This includes a rudder bulb, and Samsung’s new energy monitoring software “ENSaver”. «BERGE K2» was named after Mount K2, the second tallest mountain in the world. With a peak of 8,611 metres above sea level, it sits on the border between Baltistan in northern Pakistan and Xinjiang in China. «BERGE MAKALU» was named after Mount Makalu, the fifth highest mountain in the world with an elevation of 8,462m (27,765 feet). It is an isolated peak in central Nepal, just 22.5km (14miles) east of Mount Everest. The vessel’s IMO number is 9709518. The 216,000 size «BERGE TAI SHAN» and «BERGE HENG SHAN» were delivered to Berge Bulk in 2015. The ships are built at Bohai (CSIC) shipyard in China, and also these vessels are fixed on long-term Contract of Affreightment with BHP Billiton and operate between Australia and China. Both vessels were named after the Five Great Mountains in China. «BERGE TAI SHAN» was delivered as the first of a series of seven new ships on order at Bohai shipyard. Also these ships fly the Isle of Man flag. Some specifications of BERGE TAI SHAN • Flag Isle of Man • DW 216,656 MT • Draft 17.6m • Length Overall 306m • Breadth 52m • No. of holds/hatches 9 • Holds cap. 234,961.4 m3 • Main Engine Wärtsilä 6WX72 (Tier I) • Max output 16,450 kW x 86.7 rpm • Auxiliary engines 3 x Daihatsu 8DK20-e

34,000 DWT Handysize Berge Bulk took delivery of its third newly built handy-size vessel, «BERGE ASAHIDAKE», from Namura Shipyard in Japan on 13 January 2016. Also here the mountains preside: the vessel is named after Asahidake Mountain, which is, at 2,291m the tallest mountain in Hokkaido, Japan. This vessel will trade on the spot market and will soon be followed by a fourth vessel and by the end of 2016 the company will have six Namura built sister vessels. These ships are equipped with energy-saving and environmentally friendly technologies such as rudder bulb fins, Namura flow control fins, and a new generation of propeller that omits root and hub-vortex cavitation. The main engine’s technology electronically controls fuel injection and the exhaust valve drive. This allows an auto-tuning of the engine and ensures more efficient operations during slow steaming. Also, both main and diesel generator engines comply with Nitrogen Oxides Tier II regulation. So, all in all very environmental friendly ships. The company Berge Bulk desribes itself as one of the world’s leading independent dry bulk owners, as well as young and dynamic. There are over 40 vessels in the fleet today. As the name indicate there is is a link to Bergesen, and thereby World Wide. Interestingly one finds «Berge Stahl» in the fleet list, built in 1986 and with dw of 364,767 tons. She was the world’s longest and largest iron ore carrier for a full 25 years. The vessel joined the Berge Bulk fleet in 2007, hauling iron ore approx 810 times each year from the Terminal Marítimo de Ponta da Madeira, Brazil, to Europoort. It takes an average of two days to load this giant ship, and about five days to discharge. SKIPSREVYEN 1/2016
