WASSUP SKY SISTERS

Finally this issue is here! Are you as excited as l am?

Girrrrl I’m here to have fun and this issue brings out the very best ways we can spend our summer.

Get The Look is my personal favorite part of the maga zine - we all know that fashion allows us to express ourselves creatively and my girls Maya and Natasha definitely know how to dress! They both have unique styles and I’m so excited to recre ate the looks they put together.

I’m trying to get fit and stay fit this summer so we asked you and some of our SKY big sistas what you do for fitness… find it all in the Body Beautiful article.

It can get really hot during summer and a nice cool refresh ing drink is what I need just to cool down. I learnt how to make mocktails in the ‘How To’ series and let me just say, not only do these mocktails taste good, they look good too! Let’s not forget to take a picture for the gram.

It gets kind of hard deciding what to do with my friends but now we have a summer bucket list filled with ideas of what to do on the weekend, all from the main feature article. My friends and I will not be getting bored anytime soon.

Exam season is approaching and I know we’re all trying to make sure we know enough to get us by in the exam room but girlies, don’t worry, SKY has got you covered! We have study tips that you can try out that will help you prepare for the exam. And studying doesn’t have to be boring! Girl check the article I don’t want to give out too much lol.

These are just some of my favorite articles so far, and there is plenty more to dive into this issue of SKY, and remember to have fun girls, always.

Smart Casual

Meet our stylish SKY Girls Maya and Natasha who put these cool fits together

Maya

For my first outfit, I’d like to pair a golf tee with a sweatshirt and some slim fit trousers. To accessorize I would wear some Vans, a cool necklace, some rings and earrings. I’d comforta bly wear this outfit on a formal or semi-formal occasion. To dress it up even further, I’d substitute the golf tee for a dress shirt and the vans for formal lace up shoes. I prefer black, white and beige combos when going for the smart casual look. Such an outfit makes me feel comfortable, cool and confident. I feel like I can be myself, a girl but not a girly girl. The outfit is me, both feminine and masculine. I can run, I can jump and still look smart enough to fit in anywhere.

Natasha

r  t Chic

The second look is a sweatshirt paired with blue ripped jean shorts, white long socks and sneakers. This look gives summer fun time but also street chic. I love the two outfits because they are so comfortable when I'm feeling casual or when I want to go out for a quick errand. The outfits are just cute and adorable. I chose this outfit because baggy is better, bigger is better and large is in charge. I love tomboy baggy clothes because they are more relaxed compared to tight clothes. They are flawlessly perfect.

Maya S p o r C h i c

My everyday go-to outfit is a pair of shorts and a baggy tee with some socks and slides on my feet or some high-top converse. If it’s a little chilly, I’ll wear a hooded checked shirt and some cargo sweatpants. With regards the tees, fun and bold graphics are an absolute must! This is the perfect outfit for playing video games at home, any outdoor sports activities or a casual walk around the mall with my friends. This combination of clothes, while comfortable, also makes me feel ready for adventure! I can run, climb and dance at any moment and just about anywhere. I feel invincible and cool.

world!

r  t  y l e

I enjoy wearing baggy clothes because they are comfortable and when I’m comfortable, I feel most confident. From the oversized graphic shirts to the sweatpants I have free movement and that’s why tomboy/street style is my thing. For my first look, I chose a baggy white graphic t-shirt and a brown flannel paired with brown sweatpants and some cool sneakers i.e Jordan low cuts. This look gives comfy but also cool. It can be an everyday look for hanging out with your friends. To give it a baddie look, add some sunglasses because it will elevate the whole outfit.

Zindaba Hanzala

Aka #Queenmulimi

Zindaba Hanzala, Miss Zambia 2010 and current Mrs Zambia 2022 is a mother, wife, farmer, and award-winning Agri entrepreneur. She is the founder of a social enterprise called Mulimi which provides Agro financing, Agro insurance, technical support and market linkage to small-scale and emergent farmers across the Zambian agriculture value chain. Mulimi has a membership of 3400 farmers and of this number 219 are agriculture students and grad uates.

She is a firm believer and champion of women and youth empowerment because she too has been greatly empowered by other women.

12

Hi there, young Zindaba, AKA Zindi (I know you like to be called Zindi because you think it’s a cooler name), this is the older Zindi checking in on you.

Girl, the day is finally here - we made it to the big 14! I know you were hoping that by now you would have made your own rules and become your own boss to show everyone that thinks your hair is too coarse, your skin is too dark, and your school shoes are so old. Hang in there girl, your beautiful dark skin and coarse hair are what make you special and stand out.

I know you don’t understand why you can’t get new school shoes every school term like the other girls in your class, it’s normal to want new and fancy shoes every now and then but what’s important is to get an education, be ambitious and believe in your talents. So be content with what your parents are able to provide for you and your siblings. This is a phase that will pass, and soon you will be able to get yourself all the shoes you have ever dreamt of.

So young lady, trust the process, be gentle, and be open to learning new things, don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Listen to criticism and advice, as these are the virtues that will be your guiding light to becoming the woman you wish to be. Always be true to yourself.

FutureLove,Zindi

13

‘Talking to yourself is the first sign of madness.’ If you’ve heard this, know that it simply isn’t true. We talk to ourselves all the time, whether we are conscious of it or not. Every waking minute and hour of the day we are saying stuff to ourselves that either builds us up or tears us down. Think about when you were younger, and you would play imaginary games. You would talk to yourself and create characters in the game whose voices you would sound out. As you grow older, you’re conditioned to suppress the speech and to start talking silently in your head. Talking to yourself isn’t a bad thing. Psychology shows that it can actually help in articulating your thoughts or organising your ideas better.

When there’s self-doubt, we can be very judgemental with ourselves, more than we would be with our friends, family or even people we hardly know. If you do badly in a test or don’t get a spot on the netball or football team, you may find yourself saying ‘I’m so dull’ or ‘I’m useless at sport’. Negative self-talk is harmful to your confidence and resilience. When you say negative things about yourself often enough, you start to believe them, and may not even realise that you’re doing it, because it’s a habit.

Positive self-talk helps you to become more willing to try new things, to be more confident and to go for your goals. It helps you to understand that you are not defined by your mistakes, setbacks, or disappointments. It helps you overcome challenges and learn from them. Like with most things, it takes practice. We talked about neural pathways in the last issue. Practising positive self-talk builds strong neural pathways in your brain to give you the tools to deal with challenges when they come up. It may seem silly to practice positive self-talk when you’re not dealing with any disappointments but think about it like this: you practice fire drills at school on a regular basis, even though you’ve never experienced a fire. However, if there’s a fire, you’ll know exactly what to do to be safe. Positive-self talk is the mental backup you need to drown your personal fires building up inside you.

Here are some tips on creating daily habits that keep your self-talk and beliefs positive.

1 After setting your positive intention when you wake up every morning, look in the mirror and create a mantra that puts you in a positive mood. Think of your favourite chorus from a song. You could try it with the SKY Girls song ‘I Am Unstoppable’. You can do this whenever you look in the mirror, for example when you’re washing your hands or brushing your teeth. You don’t have to say it out loud, you can say it in your head. Do what works for you.

2 Whenever you hear the negative self-talk, think of an action you could use that can immediately shift or stop the talk. I take deep breaths; it gives me time to think of something positive to replace the negative talk with. You could snap your fingers or tap lightly on your chest. Again, do what works for you.

You can also have a journal or notebook where you write out your negative self-talk and shift it to positive self-talk. You can use this journal to write down your mirror mantras or other positive affirmations.

your opinion of yourself is what matters most.

Namwezi Chisha in

The FemaleYoungestPilot

Namwezi Chisha is Zambia’s youngest pilot, gaining her license at 19 years old. An ambitious and adventurous girl, Namwezi took her passion for travel the extra mile by pursuing a career in aviation at only 17 years old, almost immediately after nishing high school at Rhodes Park School. Even though she didn’t think about being a pilot before grade 11, that didn’t stop Namwezi from fueling a re that was sparked by a job shadow (which is basically following around a professional as they work) from a school trip taken in 2017. With the backing and encouragement from her parents, Namwezi shifted the odds and made history by becoming Zambia’s youngest pilot. She is now working on her commercial pilot license, as her next target is to work for a commercial airline. She aims to open her own charter company, build good schools in Zambia and across Africa and eventually have her own airline and shift the aviation industry in Zambia towards a brighter future.

“I've been a pilot for barely a year now. The first few hours were fun, my first passenger was my best friend and the second was my mom. It was a fun experience being able to fly the plane without my instructor there. The first few times I flew as a pilot, it just showed that I was in control and whatever I say goes - it was just me against the plane.

I finished high school when I was 16 and when I turned 17 the following January, I went to a blue chip flight school in South Africa. The training was a rollercoaster, I can't say it was perfect because I had my fair share of bad days, failing exams, and getting yelled at for doing the wrong thing, but all that made me the pilot I am today and I'm grateful for that. To join aviation, you need a valid medical certificate, because if you are not medically fit they won’t let you fly, you need to be able to read and write English, have good communication skills and most importantly, you need to have a passion for it.

Being the youngest pilot in the country means I have to work harder and set a good example for those following behind me. Being the youngest pilot shows people that as a young person, you don’t always have to end up being a bad example, you can do good things. Many people think that at my age the common thing happening is teenage pregnancies, drugs and all that, so I'm glad I'm in this position to show people that even at a young age you can achieve what you want to achieve.

If I could go back in time, I would want to stand up for myself more. I think I'd be in a better position right now because in high school I went through a lot of bullying. I think the main problem I had about going to flight school was that most people were trying to talk fear into my plans because I was young, but if you look now, most people that tried are still trying to get the license I have. Bullying isn’t my thing, I wouldn’t advise someone to bully the person back, because in most cases other people are just reflecting on how they are or how they're treated. So for me I'd say walk away and try to avoid the person as much as you can, if they keep bothering you even after you’ve tried avoiding them, ask for help from someone older, but don’t hit other people, don’t hit people's children.

When you want to become a pilot, consistency is key. There is a lot of reading involved, because you have to learn about a lot of planes. You need to develop the habit of reading to be well prepared. If you want to be a pilot, don’t let people talk you out of it! It can be hard for girls to get backing because aviation is a male-dominated industry, but females can also take over and I see that happening in the coming years… So if you really want to do it? You can do it.

SHOOT MY SHOT OR DUCK?

He likes me he likes me not he likes me he likes girl stop stressing your pretty mind and let’s get to the bottom of this with a little quiz

QUESTIONS

On top of the butterflies you get when you see your crush, there’s your head spinning because you don’t know if your crush likes you back or not. Do they like you as just a friend, or does your crush want to take it to the next level? It’s defo easier to sit back and do nothing, but do you really want to let the possibility of something great pass you by? Aweh. Sadly you can’t read their mind, but you can take the quiz below to help you stop texting your girls every 2 seconds asking “does he like me?”

How close are you and your crush?

A We hardly speak

B We are great friends

C We speak here and there

At a concert, your crush is:

A With his boys

B Singing to you

C Hanging out with another group of people and bumps into you occasionally

Does your crush have a girlfriend?

A Ugh, yes

B Nope!

C It’s complicated

Your crush invites you to a chill by:

A Being your friend’s plus one

B Texting you and making sure you will be there

C Him mentioning it to everyone through your group chat

During tuitions, your crush shoots you a text. It says:

A This class is boring. Save me

B What are you doing at break time?

C Did you finish copying the notes?

Your WhatsApp messages with your crush

are usually about:

A School and friends you have in common

B Pretty much anything and everything that goes on for countless hours

C Nothing specific

Has he introduced you to his boys?

A No, I have not met them

B Yeah, they are great!

C Kinda, they’re our mutual friends

When it’s just you and your crush, they:

A Are awkwardly quiet

B Say how pretty your smile is

C Ask how you have been

You two have phone calls:

A Rarely

B Almost all the time

C Sometimes

When you and your crush are talking, they:

A Don’t really engage you in the conversation

B Maintain blush-worthy eye contact

C Look around and get a little distracted

Do you and your crush ever hug?

A Not really, he doesn’t seem like a hugger

B Duh, every time we see each other!

C Sometimes, but it’s more of a side hug situation

16

Have you ever made your crush laugh?

A Sometimes

B All the time, I’m the source of his happiness

C Every now and then

You post a selfie on Instagram. Your crush:

A Likes it days later

B Double taps in the first hour

C Likes it within a day

How much do you and your crush have in common?

A We’re into some of the same movies and T.V. shows

B Basically everything

C A few things

Does your crush ever compliment you?

A He has before

B Yes, every day!

C Here and there

Has your crush ever asked you to do anything just the two of you?

A Not yet

B Yes, and it felt like a date!

C Yes, but you think it was just as friends

If you answered mostly A…

You and your crush need to get to know each other more, doing this with your friend group will definitely help you with your nerves and you get a chance to know more about him through his interactions with other people. Once you do that, you’ll get a clear picture of your next move.

You’re out sick from school. Your crush checks

Your crush checks in by:

A Waiting for me to be back in school and asks how I was

B Coming to see you with all your favorite things

C Texting to see if you’re feeling alright.

Do you find it easy to open up to your crush?

A No, I’m really shy

B Of course! We share all of our secrets

C Not yet. But I can totally see us getting there

Do you know each other’s zodiac signs?

A Not yet

B Of course, and we are totally compatible

C I think so

What are you most attracted to in your crush?

A I can’t pinpoint

B Definitely their sense of humor and intelligence

C Their looks!

If you answered mostly B…

Make your move! It’s obvious your crush totally likes you. See if they want to hang out alone, that’s if they haven’t asked you already. When you’re together, tell them how you feel about them. They might even be relieved you brought it up first, so they won’t have to worry about getting rejected. Hopefully you’ll be heading towards a relationship soon!

If you answered mostly C…

Try to give it a shot! (If they don’t already have a girlfriend of course.) Whether or not they like you too is a different question. Ask them to grab lunch or go to the movies, just the two of you. If they really like you, they’ll be able to tell that it’s date date — and hopefully they’ll make a move. If they don’t see it, or aren’t into you romantically, it’s lakka. You can still have a good friend!

It s not the end of the world if they don t feel the same way You should be proud that you had the courage to express your true feelings and that you received the answers you sought even if you did not get what you desired

If your crush does not share your sentiments simply say Cool no problem or Thanks for listening to me anyway When saying goodbye be polite and kind don t make your crush feel bad by saying things like I knew this would happen or No one ever likes me back

Whichever way it goes always remember how amazing you are

I would definitely have to say SKY Fest was my favourite SKY Memory. I experienced a plethora of different emotions all at once. Fear because didn’t expect to see so many people there. Then excitement and shock. It was nerve-wracking and exhilarating all at once. It was also really amazing to see how far SKY Girls Zed had come. I’m just glad I got to be a part of it all.

So many fond, fun & sentimental SKY memories but my favourite would have to be the very first SKY project which was the “ Stay True Anthem”. I had the privilege of working with amazing & strong artists allowing for different generations to merge & create something exceptional. From the recording of the song to the shooting of the music video, I definitely had so much fun working & staying true.

My favourite memory overall is meeting all the SKY Girls and hearing how committed they are to being themselves and wanting to positively impact other people’s lives. I also love how you decorate the SKY Hub; pink is my favourite colour.

SKY has done so many amazing things for me, and I got to meet so many amazing people, but out of all of them, the day that moved me the most was when I got to have a private listening party with Abel Chungu. We went to sit and listen to the amazing music on his next album, and that was so amazing for me because I am a huge fan, and his music is so inspiring.

Stay True ‘Boys and Bants’

My most memorable experi ence was probably when I came on set wearing an absolutely ridiculous outfit on Stay True, and EVERY ONE had a good laugh.

It's hard for me to pick only one moment because my journey with SKY has been memorable. From being an advisory girl to hosting the radio show and the Tikula premiere. I'm grateful to be part of some thing awesome and have grown alongside my SKY sisters.

THULANI NKHOMA

My best SKY memory has to be getting ready for all the different photo and video shoots I got to be a part of. Forever grateful <3

I have many unforgettable memories with SKY, but my top 3 are my appearance on the Stay True show; training sessions with our acting coach in my first days with my castmates; and the time I met the Tikula fans at the premiere and at the SKY store after our IG live.

Having friends over or just want to treat yourself Why make a boring juice when you can make a super duper mocktail A mocktail is a cocktail style drink that has no alcohol in it

Mocktails are yummy fun and easy to make You can make any of these mocktails in just under minutes with very few ingredients but a whole lot of colours and flavours

Here are some of our favourite mocktails to make in the summer here at SKY that you should try at home

20

Summer Sunrise Mocktail

Yup it will definitely look as pretty as the legendary African sunset and taste even better

What you’ll need:

Serves 4

Fresh orange juice – 1 carton 200ml per glass

Grenadine syrup (red syrup) – ¼ cup a tablespoon per glass

Crushed or normal ice cubes

Fruit (Strawberries, Blueberries these are just for garnish and can be any fruit you want!)

Glasses

Straws

How to make it:

1 Grab your favourite glass

Add in some ice

Pour the orange juice almost all the way to the top

Slowly (very slowly) pour in your syrup. This will make the syrup rise slowly and make a beautiful ombre look that looks like a sunset

5 Finally chop some of your fruit into small pieces to fit in the glass and there you go! A perfect summer sunrise.

The Blue Lagoon

Here ’ s a different fun colour

What you’ll need:

Serves 4

Curacao syrup – ½ cup 2 teaspoons per glass

Fresh lemon juice – ¼ cup 3-4 tablespoons per glass Sugar syrup – ¼ cup 1 teaspoon per glass Sprite or lemonade soda – 1 bottle 1 litre should do and 200ml per glass

Virgin Mojito

An absolute favourite and perfectly refreshing for the summer Pronounced mo hit o

What you’ll need:

Serves 4

Fresh mint – A handful

Fresh limes - 2 Lime cordial – ¼ cup Honey/sweetener – 1 tablespoon 3-4 tablespoons per glass Sprite, Lemonade, or Soda water – 1 bottle, at least 1 litre 200ml per glass

Crushed or normal ice cubes

Glasses

Straws

How to make it:

Pro tip: Your mint needs to be muddled (hit or pressed to bring out the flavour), you can use a wooden spoon to press it gently while it’s in the glass or with a rolling pin before it’s in the glass.

1 Get a round glass or mason jar (it’s okay to use any ordinary glass too)

THRIFTING TIPS

Who wants to look like everyone else Stand out with a look that is uniquely you

Thrifting, AKA salaula or bend down boutique, is one of the best ways to find unique clothing items on a budget. Thrifting is also a great way to create your style by finding signature or vintage pieces you cannot find in a convention al store. If you care about the environment, thrifting is a great idea too because second-hand clothing is wearable and should not end up in a landfill. We are going to give you a few tips that will help you thrift successfully.

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes

Before you go out, wear comfortable clothes and shoes because it involves a lot of walking and you might not be able to find all that you are looking for in one place. We recommend a t-shirt and jeans or leggings and sneakers or any closed but comfortable shoes. You could wear slides or slippers but town can get muddy or dusty depending on the season. Remember to keep your money safeideally you can carry a small bag to keep your money and phone in but make sure to keep it close to your body and not on your side or back. This is to avoid having your money or valuables stolen.

Plan and budget

Have an idea of what you plan on buying. It is important to have an idea of what you want to buy because this will keep you within your budget and stop you from impulse buying. It is also overwhelming to see a lot of clothes and you might end up getting clothes that you don’t need and you don’t want to end up with clothes that you can’t wear. Check the internet for pieces you might need or look at your closet and see what might be missing.

Where to thrift

The best thrifting spots that are tried and trusted are around Kulima Tower, City Market and Soweto. Some can also be found along Freedom Way and Nkwazi road. You should note that clothes that are on hangers and mannequins and shoes that are neatly arranged tend to cost more so if you are on a budget look out for clothes that are in a pile. You have a wide selection to choose from in those areas. Be sure to hear people mentioning the same price for all items and you might be able to pick out great items. If you see a lot of people at one spot it usually means there are nice clothes or that they are cheap. If you see someone holding an item you like you can always hope that they put it down, but do not seem interested because they will notice! If they drop it just pick it up immediate ly.

When to thrift

The best time to go thrifting is in the morning and at the end of the day. If you go in the morning, especially in City Market you find sellers with temporary stands and they sell their items at cheap prices because they will be leaving and their items are cheaper because they do not pay for stands. Going thrifting at the end of the day is also ideal because sellers are trying to sell as much as they can and they reduce their prices. Also, they hope to sell more because there are a lot of people in town and they might sell more than they did during the day. The best days you can go thrifting are Wednesdays and Fridays because those are the usual days when sellers open their bales and so they have new stock they want to sell out fast and they are also trying to sell out their old stock. Sunday is an ideal day too but not all stands are open so your choice might be limited, howev er, items are much cheaper because there are fewer people and the sellers try and sell as much as they can.

Negotiate and save

It is important to have negotiating skills especially if you are on a budget. Sometimes the people selling are not honest about their prices so if you ask how much an item is and they hesitate and mention a price, it’s possible that they are not being honest. Be sure to stick to your budget and ask them to reduce their price, or say that you only have a certain amount and if they don’t agree just walk away and hope they call you back. If not you might be able to find the same item for cheaper which is often the case.

Happy thrifting!

We hope you find these tips useful and that you will be able to find the pieces you are looking for successfully. Thrifting is a great way to save money and still look great on a budget.

MEET THE COVER GIRLS

Tumba Mungowa

MY thing

Negativity, Toxic people and Bullying my thing

I’ve been a SKY girl for a while now. So, I was motivated to try out this cover competition by last year’s September birthday giveaway, where I won tickets to SKY FEST. I have participated in many other competitions, and I don’t always win, but I decided to give this a shot. In my entry video, I did a cover of ‘You raise me up’ on my flute. My mom was the first woman I knew, so naturally, I look up to her. Ashley Graham is also an inspiration because she doesn't let her body limit her, not to mention her authenticity. Playing my flute is something I'm passionate about, yet I do it for fun. I dream of becoming a world-renowned flute player. I would love to go beyond what people see in the music industry and art. When it comes to having fun with my girls, shop ping is therapeutic. We love experimenting with different styles and prints. We usually meet at each other’s houses, watch movies and have some snacks. My most memorable hangout was my birthday reunion. I would advise every SKY sister to ensure you're comfortable with your friends. Then, step out of your shell and be free to express yourself.

MY thing

Baking, Basketball, Running

my thing

I learned about the cover competition when I passed through the SKY Hub at Arcades with my mum and sisters. My mum was very supportive; that's one of the reasons I aspire to be like her. I love TikTok because the content always seems to match my exact mood.

I find singing to be very fun, and it brings joy to the people around me. When my girls and I want to have fun, we go on movie dates or shopping. We often shop for each other, which is very thoughtful of them. My friends let me show the real me, so there’s never a dull moment with them. On my birthday this year, we had a photoshoot and went for lunch and a movie. We haven't seen each other in a long time because they went to different schools. That's what made it very memorable.

My tips for having a fun time are being authentic and consistent around your friends.

MY thing

Dancing, Singing, Listening to music

my thing

Toxic people, Show-offs and Snakes

My journey to becoming a cover girl started when I entered the SKY Girls Zed TikTok cover competi tion to the sound of Karma by Summer Walker. I love the app because of the funny yet relatable content. I’m passionate about dancing and singing, and I would say it’s a generational thing for my family.

My role model is my dad - he's loved by many and has a fantastic voice. And Zendaya, because she’s a young producer and her own boss. Some things my girls and I do for fun are sleepovers, paintball ing, lunch and movie dates. We understand each other and that way we're able to have fun. My tip for having a fun time with your girls is to always choose people who understand each other's vibe. Make sure everyone is comfortable with everyone. Lastly, when picking group activities, do something everyone feels comfortable doing.

MY thing

Acting, Dancing and Modelling

my thing

Negativity, Rape culture and Smoking

When I saw the cover competition announcement, I decided to give it a shot, and it's the best chance I've taken. My mum, Princess Natasha Chansa and Lombe Posa are my role models. They inspire me to keep it real and embrace my true self. Dancing is a way for me to have fun, but most importantly, it’s my form of self-expression without having to say so much. I'm happiest in my own company and love being in my own space. However, when I do turn it up with my besties, we usually go out for a movie or catch up. The best thing about being around them is we're free to be ourselves. If you want to have a good time with your friends I would say, don’t hold back! Have as much fun as you can, and live in the moment.

SKY’s Guide to an

Hey girl Its final exam season and we know school can be challenging so we’ve got some tips and tricks to help you kill it FIRST things FIRST hydrate as much as possible and try to get some REST girl When you’re well rested you can take in more material and remember it better

Hopefully you’ve been studying all year long but we know we’re not perfect so here are some hacks to get you through those crucial last minute attempts to study

Hacks when you’ve only got

Hacks when you’ve got

THREE DAYS

1Arrange all the topics you need to study and tick off as you go - listing stuff is always a good way to get organized and no one can deny the awesome feeling of ticking off something as done right?

2 3Study the hard stuff first - when the brain is fresh, you’ll study better. Try and do the hard stuff first, you’ll understand it better than when you’re tired.

Create acronyms and mnemonic devicesan acronym is an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word. Think of words like ASAP (as soon as possible). A mnemonic device, on the other hand, is a memory technique that can help you remember better. E.g. My Very Earnest Mother Just Sent Us Nine Potatoes to remember planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto).

Make studying FUN! - Crazy how we can remember lyrics to a song from five years ago but struggle with something we learnt a few months ago right? The difference is music is fun and the melodies really stick! So how about you incorporate fun and music in your studies. A rap to remember a difficult topic or making a song using the melody of your favourite song can really help. Remember,

A FEW HOURS

1 2 3

Highlight! - It’s always a good idea to make what you need to remember stand out. Highlight the most important parts and look out for those a few hours before the exam.

Study wherever you can - Whether you’re dressing up, having breakfast or are literally on your way to the exam destination, refresh your brain as much as you can, especially the final details you may need to perfect.

Write down all your acronyms or mnemonic devices - Do this as close to the exam as possible to refresh your mind.

Now, let’s talk

Brain F d

We know Doritos and Amigos are pretty tempting as you study, especially if you’re a stress-eater, but try these out. We promise they really work!

Berries - Fruits like strawberries and blueber ries contain antioxidants that reduce stress, especially blueberries.

Nuts and seeds - The more you eat them, the more Vitamin E you take in which is pretty good for brain function.

Dark chocolate - If you have a sweet tooth and are worried about not being able to pig out, don’t worry, dark chocolate is a pretty good alternative. It’ll give you the satisfaction of eating chocolate but also comes with benefits such as antioxidants which are so important for brain health.

believe in yourself.

The Swimming Sensation

Jade Phiri caught the attention of the world at this year's Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK. She stunned everyone with her performance, winning her heat in an outstanding fashion. At only 16 years old Jade got to live out her dream and represent Zambia, and she did it with style. The deep end is not the limit for Jade, as she not only made a statement at her Commonwealth Games debut, but showed us what hard work and discipline can reward you with.

During the CANA Zone IV African Swimming Champion ships that took place in April 2022 in Lusaka, Jade took the stage against 14 East and South African countries. She showed out and won three gold medals, two silvers and a bronze, this cemented her selection to represent Zambia in her first ever Commonwealth Games that took place from Jul 28, 2022 – Aug 8, 2022.

There she shined in all her heats, finishing first in her Wom en’s 50m Butterfly heat, second in her Women's 50m Freestyle heat and third in her heat for the Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay. Jade told us “While I was in Birmingham, I knew I had one job, and it was to do my best and the outcome will handle itself. Winning my heat, and walking away with a national age group record, I was incredibly proud to raise Zambia’s flag high, and I will strive to continue to do so.”

The Commonwealth Games were not the only thing Jade had to prepare for in a few months, she had her GCSE exams only a month before the games. After experiencing her dream of performing at the Commonwealth Games come true, Jade found that she had also aced her GCSE exams proving her hard work is beyond the waters.

MY thing

Messy spaces, eating hot food, I weirdly prefer it colder. The outdoors.

Jade admitted to having some challenges balancing train ing, her academics, and her social life, sometimes finding that it gets overwhelming. “But with the help of my teach ers and coaches, we are able to write monthly plans to ensure I make the best of what I have.”

Talking to Jade, it was clear that she is a sweetheart who breathes hard work and understands discipline. She is a jack of all trades - her love for sports goes beyond the swimming pool as she plays football, and she does horse riding, where she competes in showjumping, even repre senting the country at the ACES Youth Championships, where she walked away with an individual joint win on day 2 of the competition. Tjo! And she also plays the piano and the saxophone. This girl is living her life!

To the SKY girl reading this, Jade has this message: “I would say, you can truly surprise yourself. Our minds set limits that if you test, you can easily overcome. As girls, young ladies, women, we are stronger than we think we are, both mentally and physically.”

WHO RESISTED COLONIAL RULE

It s the time of the year when we bring our national coloured chitenges spread some patriotic cheer and give Mother Zambia some well deserved love and appreciation As we celebrate Zambia s th independence we asked our SKY Big Sistas over at the Museum of Women s History of Zambia to share with us some little known women who brought change and leadership in our country’s history for independence

Namwezi Mwamba- The Freedom Fighter

How old do you need to be considered a freedom fighter? Namwezi Mwamba proved you're never too young to fight for what you believe in!

Namwezi was only 18 years old when she became one of the most trusted operatives for UNIP during the struggle for independence. She participated in the Cha Cha Cha campaign, a movement of civil disobedi ence and political awareness led by Kenneth Kaunda and coordinated across the country by Lewis Changu fu (another veteran politician).

Namwezi successfully led her band of saboteurs called the Kasakalabwe Rioters of Mpulungu and since the police officers thought that a woman could not achieve such success, they set out to search for the man behind the civil disobedience. Namwezi managed to escape each time she led her team. This was only until an insider betrayed her and spilled the beans on her team's next move. Then, the police officers came prepared and gunned her down on sight because she was on their Most Wanted list.

Even though she never got to see Zambia gain independence and her dreams fulfilled, Namwezi is always remembered as a young and courageous freedom fighter.

Betty Chilombo Chilunga- Women’s rights activist

The struggle for freedom was fought in many ways, and Betty Chilombo Chilunga was at the forefront of just one of them. Betty was a trained teacher who led a movement against African marriage certificates that restricted women’s movement.

After getting married, Betty noticed the negative connotation of her marriage certificate. Every major town had roadblocks at which all the African women had to produce their marriage certificates, otherwise they would be denied passage. She was enraged to see the dreams of many unmarried women shattered as they were deported back to villages without proof of marriage.

Between 1962 and 1963, Betty led an act of defiance in which women burnt their marriage certificates. The protests confronted the notion that women should only be respected if married and supported the freedom of movement for single women who wanted better lives. It also addressed the stereotype that single women in cities were prostitutes. She never replaced her marriage certificate since then and went on to serve as a member of UNIP, the ruling party at the time. She retired in 1991.

Kapelwa Mwanangumbi Sikota- The Healthcare Advocate

Remember how we said the fight for independence was fought in different ways? Kapelwa Mwanangumbi Sikota rose against racial discrimination women faced in the health sector. Kapelwa was the first State Registered Nurse of any gender in Zambian history. She was born and lived in the Mongu district of Northern Rhodesia in 1928. She completed her nursing training in 1951 and was employed at Lusaka Central Hospital, now known as the University Teaching Hospital.

At the Lusaka Central Hospital, she faced racial discrimination from her white colleagues and fought hard for equal pay. However, when she was transferred to Roan Antelope Mine Hospital in Luanshya, Kapelwa faced blatant racism when she was assigned the matron role for a trainee hospital much lower than her qualification demanded. Angered by this, Kapelwa took the matter to the House of Commons in England to plead her case. She won the case and paved the way for many aspiring health practitioners following her.

Gir ls want to have

I like that people can have fun in their own unique ways but yoh! Let me tell you about a time when 'fun' went wrong and became boring.

So basically, I'm a girl who rarely goes out. I'm home most of the time, and I like it. Fun for me is home alone, eating snacks and watching Netflix. That right there, that's lots of fun for me; I guess because I'm an introvert, I get so excit ed just thinking about it. But as much as I'm a homebody, I would also like to experience what's outside.

So one day, I decided to try something new, and I went out with my friend who is always going out, and when I say always, I always mean sis doesn't get a break. She and I went to this place where there were many people and there was music and food. It was just a whole vibe. Everyone was laughing, smiling and just generally having a good time. For someone who doesn't go out, at first this was pretty interesting. I'd never done anything like that before.

My friend being the social butterfly she is, would occasion ally talk to people and join in with what they were doing.

It was almost like she was the perfect puzzle piece to all the puzzles. She's good at what she does.

But me, on the other hand! I thought that because my friend likes it and other people like it too, then I'd automati cally like it too. I lied to myself. I didn't have fun at all; the place was terrible. There were so many people, and that place was just really noisy. The whole time I was there, I kept thinking of how I'd have much more fun eating snacks and watching Netflix at home. This place may have been fun, yes, but just not for me. It wasn't my type of fun. I was so bored and just wanted to leave and go home to what I thought was fun. Because this was not it.

This experience got me thinking that what's fun for you might not be fun for the next person. Everyone has different perceptions of what is fun to them. So I think the only thing that matters is whether or not you're having fun. It's all about you, baby girl, cause at the end of the day, girls just want to have their type of fun!

What's up SKY, my best friend's parents are going through a divorce, and it seems to affect her negatively. How can I comfort her during this turbulent time?

A divorce is never easy for both the parents and the children in the family. It's a huge change from what is familiar, and heightened emotions are involved. Your friend may have a lot of questions that you can’t answer. She may be feeling fear about what happens next. She may even be wondering if her friends will look at her differently because of what has happened. Reassure her that none of this is about her and that you will always be there for her. Check up on her, but don't pressure her into talking about things she doesn't want to talk about. Just let her know that you’re there for her no matter what. Perhaps suggest a sleepover or arrange a fun day hanging out with your other friends. Above all else, just let her know she can count on you.

Hello SKY Girls; I want to stay true to myself and hang out with the cool kids. The only issue is that they are all naughty and disobedient; should I still try hard to be friends with them?

Being true to yourself means you should not try hard to be friends with anyone. If people can't accept you for your true authentic self, then those are not people worth being friends with. If trying hard means changing yourself and doing things against your values and principles, there's nothing cool about that. At the end of the day, you will know how your actions and behaviour have affected you, and you will be the biggest judge of it. If you already have friends who you are happy with, and who you don't have to try hard for, why would you want to change friends? Ask yourself what it is about the 'cool kids' that you want to be a part of. If it’s something you truly desire and it doesn’t go against your values, then be that thing. If you admire their sociability, then be more sociable, and participate in school clubs. This way, you're not going against your values, and you're doing stuff that you consider cool. Remember, the most important opinion about yourself is yours. Being true to you is what makes you cool.

32

Hey sis! My male best friend just broke up with me, I thought our friendship was going well, so this is a shocker. What should I do?

Friendship breakups sometimes hurt more than romantic breakups. You go from having someone who you share all your everyday happenings with, all your hopes, dreams, and secrets, to suddenly having no one there. It's even harder when there've been no signs, and it's sudden. There may be other factors that you are not aware of. Sometimes in platonic friendships, when one friend gets into a romantic relationship, the friendship can suffer. This is especially true if your friend’s girlfriend doesn’t know you and may feel threatened by your friendship with their mate. Some people simply don’t believe that boys and girls can be just friends. This isn't a reflection of who you are; sometimes, society is just set up that way. However, if he is your true friend, he may just need some time to figure things out. Give him space and time, and this may also give you a chance to establish clear boundaries in your friendship. Know that with or without the friendship, it doesn’t define who you are.

I broke up with my boyfriend a few months ago, and he recently slid into my DMs to try and get back with me. My friends don’t think it’s a good idea, but he's been acting so sweet to me, HELP!

It would be helpful to know what the cause of the breakup was. Was it a clean breakup, or was it messy? If it was messy, was this resolved? It’s also important to know why your friends think it’s a bad idea that you get back together with him. Is there a character trait that they have seen that you haven’t? Was he unfaith ful? If so, what assurances do you have that it won’t happen again? Was he violent or verbally abusive to you? In such cases, it’s never a good idea to go back to a relationship, especially if the offender has not owned up to his actions, shown remorse and sought counsel ling and therapy. People do make genuine mistakes, learn from them and are better people after their experience. You need to be very clear within yourself that whatever caused the breakup is no longer a factor, or it is something that you’re OK with now. If not, this is something that will keep repeating itself in one form or another and likely lead to another breakup.
