The Trendometer

Sup SKY Girls! How have the first few months of 2021 been so far? Well, for me, I guess I could say they've been okay. It's not what I expected at all - for some reason, school has become way harder than usual, it will take some time to get used to it, but we'll get there! As hard as these few months have been, they've also been amazing because SKY Girls Zed has been giving us some amazing content lately, and it's definitely made things easier. Do you have any dreams you want to follow? Don’t let anyone discourage you! Anything is possible if you work hard, have hope and have patience. If there's one thing I've noticed, it's that celebrities have a huge influence when it comes to dreams. For example, you know how you see Mampi performing on stage and think, "I want to do that!" and just like that, you've found a dream that you want to turn to reality? With all that talk about

dreams, I'm glad to say that this month’s theme is all about FOLLOWING YOUR DREAMS!

This issue has so many interesting articles, like our cover girls Joy Womba and her best friend Brandy Kaluba’s winning essays on their dreams to become doctors. Speaking of career choices, we know that sometimes our parents disagree with our chosen paths, so we have an article on how to have a conversation with them. Remember Sporty Girls Matter from issue 2? We’ve brought it back because you liked it so much! This time we’re featuring equestrian Bunty Howard, who made us proud at the 2018 Youth Olympics. For sneakerheads (sneaker lovers) like myself, we have a style feature on how to style your shoes with every outfit. We have a guide on starting your own YouTube channel from Nyemba Tembo. Instead of our usual career corner feature, we have profiled FOUR awesome women in different industries such as media, wildlife, interior design and art. Maybe they’ll inspire your next career choice! That's not all, as usual, we have more amazing stuff for you too! Going back to our theme of "following your dreams”, I just want you to know that dreams do come true. As part of the ‘Stay True’ anthem says, "Nothing will get in my way, I'm unstoppable". Keep that in mind when you’re trying to achieve your dreams. Please let us know what’s your Thing, what’s not your Thing, and what your DREAMS are, over on our socials! @skygirlszed

Love,

HOW TO STYLE YOUR SNEAKERS 4 WAYS By Vita Banda

SKIRTS Take your pleated skirts and turn them into casual wear by pairing them with low top sneakers. Add a graphic t-shirt (front tucked) and a denim jacket for cooler nights.

As SKY Girls, our Thing is definitely sneakers! Whether you’re a certified sneakerhead or just getting into the latest sneaker trends, you’ll need to know how to style them with clothes already in your closet. Here are some of the ways you can style those sneakers on your shoe rack.

Look 2

Look 3

BIKER SHORTS Pair some bright sneakers with biker shorts. Complete the look with an oversized blazer jacket or a baggy shirt.

JOGGERS Pair loose-fitting joggers or workout pants with your favourite pair of black sneakers for a cool “not trying but still trying” vibe.

6

Want to replicate these looks? Send us pictures of your sneaker style by tagging us on our social media platforms @skygirlszed.

Look 4

DRESSES Rock a short floral romper or dress with white or solid coloured sneakers to not overwhelm the dress pattern. All-star converse sneakers look pretty on mid-length pencil (bodycon) dresses.

How To Customize

Your Sneakers

Tired of wearing the same sneakers and want to switch up your sneaker game in an affordable way? Here are three ways to customise your kicks!

SWITCH UP YOUR SHOELACE GAME

BRING ON THE COLOR

Take your black All-Star Converse shoelaces and put them on your white All-Star Converse and vice versa. You can also purchase bright coloured laces or try a new way of tying your laces. Head to YouTube or Pinterest for inspiration.

Tools: Acetone (which you can buy at any beauty shop), cotton wool, sellotape, hair blower, any dye colour(s) of your choice and white Nike air max sneakers. Dip the cotton wool in acetone, then use it to clean your white sneakers (the purpose of this is to help you remove the factory white colour on your sneakers and help your new colour stick). After removing the factory white colour with acetone, you will then cover parts of your sneakers with sellotape (depending on your preferred design). Apply your dye to parts not covered. Let your sneakers sundry or if you are in a hurry, dry them with the hair blower. Once dried, remove the sellotapes and you would have customised your sneakers with your favourite colour as well as your preferred design.

TWO TONED SNEAKERS Have some bleach lying around the house? Household bleach, cotton wool and sellotape are your tools for this project.

Note: wear gloves or plastics to avoid getting your hands stained with the dye colours.

Cover parts you don’t want to be bleached on your sneakers with the sellotape. Dip the cotton wool in the bleach, then rub gently on parts of the sneakers that are not covered. Let the bleach on the sneakers dry. Avoid putting the sneakers out in direct sunlight, as this will further lighten your shoes. Once dried, remove the sellotape. Now you have two-toned sneakers! If your sneakers were initially black, you will have patches or stripes of black and white (the white is caused by the bleaching agent applied). If your sneakers were originally burgundy, your final product will have burgundy and white patches or stripes. Note: the pattern of your final product depends on how you had covered your sneakers with the sellotape and which parts you bleached.

Other ways to add color to your sneakers include spray painting them (your local hardware is the best place to find spray paint), using gel pens and permanent markers to create doodles or write on them or using oil-based paint. Have you recently customised your sneakers? Send us a picture on our socials @skygirlszed.

Also, stand a chance to win your own pair of customized sneakers by visual artist Mwamba Chikwemba. Keep your eyes on our socials for the announcement.

Did you know that eyeliner was first used by the Egyptians as early as 1000 B.C? Eyeliner wasn’t primarily used as a beauty cosmetic. Instead, it was believed to protect their eyes from the harmful rays of the desert sun and ward off the evil eye. Today, eyeliner has evolved and is used mainly for aesthetic purposes. SKY Nation, you told us that you wanted a review of the best eyeliners, so we’re reviewing FOUR different liquid eyeliners with different price points to help you pick out the best one for you!

Liquid Eyeliner

This liquid eyeliner retails at K65. This one comes in the form of a marker. It’s super easy to use because the marker form gives you a good grip. As a beginner, it can be challenging to balance a brush for straight strokes, so hold it how you would use a pen.

8

Liquid Eyeliner

This eyeliner retails for K180. This eyeliner will give you a dark charcoal marking, meaning the eyeliner ink isn’t too runny or chunky. It also has a smooth texture. I would recommend this eyeliner for all you gyals that know your way around the make-up arena. As a beginner, stay away from fast-drying waterproof eyeliners because any mistakes will be difficult to correct, elo ni lisking iyo!

Liquid Eyeliner

This Revlon liquid eyeliner retails for only K160. Unlike the other liners mentioned here, this eyeliner has a felt tip (it’s like a marker) instead of having a brush. It is VERY beginner-friendly as you will have more control as you do your thing.

Liquid Eyeliner

This is the most expensive item on this list, going at a whopping price of K790. I would only suggest this eyeliner if you’re a professional for the following reason: if you’re a beginner, you don’t want to start with a product this pricey unless you’ll get multiple uses out of it. The eyeliner itself is very high end, is waterproof and fast drying. You wouldn’t have to worry about it smudging on a long, sunny, humid day.

Do your cat wings ever turn out looking like chicken wings? Then worry not sis, because we have you covered. The best way to round up any face beat is with a legendary cat wing eyeliner. This tiny addition can transform any basic look into a show-stopping runway look in seconds. However, despite how easy it may seem, I understand how difficult and frustrating it may be to pull off a killer cat winged look. Here are a few steps that’ll help you achieve the iconic cat wings. Before we get started here is what you’ll need:

How To Get The Perfect

Winged Look By Lincia Mabo

1

2

- Black lip/eyeliner pencil - Liquid eyeliner - Earbuds/swabs - Makeup remover

STEP 1 Make sure your eyebrows are already groomed. STEP 2 Use a well-sharpened lip/eyeliner pencil to slightly outline the edge of the lower lid. The bottom lash line will direct exactly where to go. STEP 3 Aim your lip/eyeliner pencil upwards towards the eyebrow and make a small dot.

3

4

STEP 4 With the liquid eyeliner, connect the dot to your lower lash line. Make sure the eyeliner brush lays flat as you make the line and reduce the pressure as you extend the line to give it a fading effect. STEP 5 Next, lightly outline the upper lash line. When you get to the edge of your eye, tilt the eyeliner brush to lay flat against your face and reduce the pressure as you extend the line to make it thinner as you go. STEP 6 Fill any spaces between the two extended lines.

5

6

Then, from the middle of your iris (where your pupil would be) on the upper lash line, make the line a little thicker. Make sure the baseline on the upper lash line is super dark so pay close attention to any spaces between the lashes. STEP 7 Repeat the above steps for the other eye.

7

TIPS

• Rest your fingers on your cheeks to help keep a steady hand • Take a selfie while looking down to see if cat eyes are symmetrical • Avoid pulling the skin around your eyes when drawing your linesthis can be misleading once the skin returns to its original position • If you have hooded eyes, (this means your eyelids form multiple folds when you look straight ahead), avoid the folds of your eyelids by keeping the lines thin. This will avoid your cat wings forming weird shapes as you blink. This is because as your eyelids flutter open and closed, some skin will hide under these folds, 9 making the cat wings look crooked.

Dear Hellen, How are you doing? Not the happiest year with the grade 7 results not as you expected. Don’t worry, you still cleared your exams, and you have a chance to get better marks when you write your grade 9 exams. Your self-esteem has gone down because you are not at the High School you wanted to attend. Put yourself together; your family is still proud of you. Don’t feel under pressure by what your friends have that you don’t have; you will get it and more. Your teenage years make you feel like you know it all; it will be easy for you to go astray. Pay attention to the morals and lessons taught by your parents and church leaders; they will keep you grounded. Don’t be afraid to make memories, for you will hold these dear to your heart, enjoy these young years because once they go, they are permanently lost. Make the best of them. You are different from your siblings, so try not to compare yourself to them. You may feel misunderstood at times but embrace your uniqueness! You are special! You are a perfectionist, so failing tasks you are given drives you crazy. The truth is we will not always manage to do everything we want. Sometimes things get delayed, and sometimes they never happen the way we want to. Keep your chin up and put your all in everything you do. I promise you; it will pay off in the end.

HOW TO GET HELP IF YOU FEEL DEPRESSED By Vida Musokotwane

Do you constantly struggle with feelings of sadness, no longer find joy in your hobbies and find it hard to stay energetic? You may be suffering from depression. Depression drains your energy, hope and drive, making it difficult to take necessary steps to feel better. Sometimes, just thinking about what you can do to make yourself feel better can be exhausting and may seem impossible. As someone who has personally struggled with depression, I can relate, so here are some tips that worked for me and led to me overcoming depression.

TAKE A FIRST STEP The first step is always the hardest and the most important when trying to overcome depression. Realising that your depression doesn’t define you and that you are not alone is the most important step; when you realise this, you realise that you are in control of your happiness.

REACH OUT AND STAY CONNECTED Getting support is an essential step in overcoming depression because, as it is said, “no man is an island”. Having a talk with someone can help a great deal as they can provide a listening ear and comfort. Go for a walk with a friend, join a support group or volunteer to help other someone people. Taking your mind off your problems to help others can provide a welcoming distraction.

DO THINGS YOU LOVE AND ENJOY Love to dance, sing, cook etc.? Doing things that previously brought you joy may help you feel better. Try to do one activity per day, even if you don’t feel like it. Your depression won’t lift immediately, but gradually; you may feel more upbeat and energetic.

12

EAT HEALTHY What you eat and do can have a direct effect on your mood. Don’t skip meals; eat less sugary and fatty foods and boost your body with Vitamin C by eating more fruits and vegetables. Going out and sitting in the sun for even 30 minutes a day can boost your mood and health. Exercise can also help.

LET IT ALL OUT There will be times in your journey when you feel like giving up. Let it all out and have a good cry, and have an off day if you have to. Nothing lasts forever, and this pain will go so long as you surround yourself with positive energy. Meet

Nukwase Tembo,

a visual artist whose work focuses on exploring the challenges women face in society.

“I create art that challenges toxic societal norms that infringe upon the rights and values of women. My work focuses on normalising blackness to establish what it means to be black without disregarding the complexities that come with it.”

Nukwase believes she is a natural-born artist and started drawing as soon as she knew what a pencil was. When she was 11, she was inspired by her uncle after seeing some of his work. “I remember saying to myself, ‘I want to create art like this someday’ . Later, as she grew older, she was encouraged to do art professionally by renowned cinematographer Jeff Sitali. She says even though it was hard for her to find the courage to create her own art, she boldly decided to - as she puts it - “just do it”.

Sometimes that is all it takes; something may seem challenging at first, but there is no limit to what you can do when you set your mind to it! One of Nukwase’s biggest challenges was getting her family to accept that she wasn’t going to study law or medicine, like some of her friends. She also had to work hard to prove that she could work as a woman in a male-dominated field. Sounds tough, right? Nukwase believes that young girls need to show up for themselves, work hard and break norms. Nukwase says she creates art for herself because she likes her work and has confidence in it. However, she believes many creatives struggle with staying true to themselves; she thinks we must all try as much as possible to be true to ourselves and not feel the need to be like someone else. Appreciate that you are different and that you stand out in your way! Always remind yourself who you are and remember that you are unique.

Luwi

Nguluka Do you have a love of wildlife, the outdoors and conservation? It was these things that led Luwi Nguluka to a career in wildlife protection. As the awareness manager at Wildlife Crime Prevention, Luwi creates campaigns around the illegal game meat trade which is a crime. “A lot of people buy and consume game meat without thinking about where it came from and the fact that the animal was probably smuggled in and not killed in humane ways.” In most cases, this illegal game meat isn’t processed in a way that makes it safe for human consumption, and a lot of people don’t think about that. Luwi Nguluka is one of three women who founded Women for Conservation Zambia. It was created because they noticed how male-dominated the sector is. “We created it to inspire more women to get into the conservation industry and also for the women who are already in the space to motivate and network with one another.” She said. Despite how broad conservation is, Luwi finds being able to make a difference and seeing a tangible change in the world to be the most fulfilling part of her work. She encourages girls to play a role in the conservation of wildlife by thinking about nature in their environment. “Take an interest in preserving trees and not polluting the environment. Next time you see your mom or dad buying bush meat, ask them if they know if it’s legal or if they’re helping in the poaching of wildlife.” She also encourages girls to join a Chongololo Club in their school or any other nature clubs. With Luwi’s vast exposure, we were curious to know what her favourite animal is. She said lions because of their majesty and that they are a symbol of what makes Africa beautiful. Her favourite celebrity quote isn’t technically said by the celebrity, but she’s heard many people say, “You have the same number of hours in a day as Beyoncé.”

Luwi’s Thing: Fashion, style and conservation Not her Thing: Not being kind

Meet

Samba Yonga,

a Communications Expert and Cultural Communicator. She is the founder of Ku-Atenga Media and the Co-Founder of the Museum of Women’s History.

We bet you’re wondering what exactly a cultural communicator does. This is something a little different from what we’re used to hearing about, isn’t it? Don’t worry, we ‘gotcha.’ Here is the 411 girl! A cultural communicator is a person who researches, studies and communicates history with a goal to inform and educate the public. Sounds cool, right? Samba Yonga studied journalism at Evelyn Hone College and then got her Master’s Degree from Goldsmiths College in London. Growing up, her parents didn’t want her to become a journalist. They wanted a more stable career for her, but she knew that if she fully committed to it, it could be something valuable not only for her life but for other people’s lives as well. She says, “Ultimately, it’s your life, and as long as you’re making the right decisions and doing work that is meaningful, it’s okay.” Another part of her career is the Women’s History Museum which she founded with her good friend, Mulenga Kapwepwe. This museum is important because it records women’s history, which is usually ignored. Her goal is to restore it and share it so that everyone has the opportunity to learn from it.

16

Her advice for young SKY girls is: “When you decide to follow your dreams, know that it is a decision of great reward, but hard work, endurance, adaptability, learning, transforming and being brave are all requirements for achieving your dream. If something doesn’t work, it doesn’t mean it’s the end. It’s a lesson you can choose to learn from or be discouraged by. Always choose to learn from it because it will help you make better decisions in future. Remember that the value is in the journey itself, not the destination.” Check out her Ted Talk on African Superheroes on YouTube. It was super cool!

Samba’s Thing: Learning through conversations, books and observing Not her Thing:

Fear

Samba’s favourite quote on following your dreams: The dream is not an abstract goal; in practical terms, it just means: define your intention, stay consistent, stay accountable and always stay curious.

Ruth Mooto My Perfect Stitch is a Zambian clothing brand with a new branch ‘My Perfect Stich Home’, that deals in furniture and interior design. In this issue’s ‘Career Corner’, we dive into how ‘My Perfect Stitch’ owner and founder Ruth Mooto went from making beaded jewellery in high school to having clients such as Guy and Charlotte Scott and Bongo Hive! Outside of that, she wears many hats as a wife, mother, business owner and architectural student. Plus, she has bragging rights of having met Prince Harry on his visit to Zambia a few years ago. Ruth began her businesses in the fashion sector but decided to pursue interior architecture and design when she realised how items like furniture could transform spaces. “One discovery led to the other, and I decided I would actually get a second degree in this subject area. It’s been an amazing journey of self-discovery and things that set my heart on fire.” Ruth initially didn’t see herself being an architectural student, especially when she had a secure job. “I had a mentor who had a government job, and I always thought their path would be similar to what mine would look like. They had elevated so well in the structure of government, but then God had/has his own plan for me, and I must say, I really like it here.” One would wonder how she manages to juggle being a wife, mother, business owner, student and everything else on her plate. Ruth admits that it’s not the easiest of things, “But I have the best support from my husband and family. When I have to work late nights, which in some seasons is very often, he helps me both at home and also with getting some things on my work list done.” She said. “Being a student with other competing responsibilities requires a lot of discipline, so I carefully create time to just be on my books to ensure my deliverables are met. It’s not always easy, but it gets done.” Her advice to girls who want to break out of their comfort zone is to always ask themselves this “Would you rather have joy or comfort?” She hopes they always choose joy because that will give their life more meaning, more fulfilment and they will always feel purposeful.

Ruth’s Thing: Cake Not her Thing: Loud and wild parties Her favourite quote related to following your dreams is, “Your ability to make things happen is what makes you different.” from Mo Abudu (Founder of Ebony Life Tv)

Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. When you repeat them often and believe in them, you can start to make positive changes. Since your thoughts play a big part in your overall success and happiness, it’s important to find ways to improve your mindset. If you do not do so, you risk falling into negative thought patterns and holding yourself back. Inspired by this issue’s ‘Follow Your Dreams’ theme and the song Stay True, here are some of our favourite affirmations. Practice saying them to yourself – which one is your favourite? If one of them resonates with you, say it all the time and let it boost your self-esteem!

on Following

Your Dreams By Chanda Chibale

When it comes to following our dreams, celebrities are some of the people who inspire us to be successful. Hard work, sacrifice and staying true to themselves have helped some of our favourites achieve their dreams. Here are a few celebrity quotes that you can read every day that will inspire you to achieve your dreams or just need some motivation if you’re feeling down.

“Parents can only give good advice or put them on their right paths, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands.” Anne Frank

“I would say the best decision I ever made was to pursue my dream and give it my all. Thankfully, I have not yet made really bad decisions, I’m the kind of person to play it on the safe side.” Zendaya

“The only approval you need is your own.” Amanda Gorman

“In a perfect dream, things would be set exactly the way you would want them. But I think it's more interesting than in real life, things aren't exactly the way you planned.” Naomi Osaka

“Start now. Start where you are. Start with fear. Start with pain. Start with doubt. Start with hands shaking. Start with voice trembling but start. Start and do not stop. Start where you are, with what you have. Just... start.” Ijeoma Umebinyuo

“You must take action. You must do the impossible. Because giving up is never an option.” Greta Thunberg “Never give up and always keep fighting, because though times may be tough, the sacrifices do pay off, so just keep pushing towards your dream and just love it at the same time and enjoy it.” Gabby Douglas

“My goal is to show young women and girls that our voices and ideas matter, and you are never too young to dream big!” Marsai Martin

“Beyoncé said to us ‘Let the world catch up to you because what you’re doing is outstanding and it’s needed in the world right now’… We just want other girls to know that your feelings are valid and you matter as a human being. You’re powerful and valid and beautiful.” Chloe x Halle

“I think that if you do want to be a fighter, then you need to work harder than everybody else and make sure that you surround yourself with good people, especially if you're a woman. You've got to find a team that takes you seriously as a female fighter and is not going to rush you into the ring before you're ready.” Laila Ali

SKY Cover Girl Hey SKY Girls, for this issue, we asked you to send us an essay about what your dream is and what you’re doing to make this dream a reality. Our winners are Joy Womba and her best friend Brandy Kaluba. Read Joy’s story here.

MEET

COVER GIRL WINNER

Joy Womba

Hi SKY sisters! My name is Joy Womba, and I am 18 years old. I live in Kaunda Square Chamba Valley and completed my high school education last year. I want to share with you what my dreams are, and how I am working to achieve them… Life is what you take from it, but dreams are what you make. Dreams are wishes that let your imagination grow. They allow you to travel anywhere in your mind. My dream is to be a surgeon. I have been working on making this dream a reality through FOCUS. I focused on myself and what mattered to me by concentrating on school. I knew I had to pass the science-based courses as that is a prerequisite to studying medical surgery. I was elated when my exam results revealed that I passed all my classes. I received distinctions in mathematics, biology and English, and merit in science. In terms of inspiration, I look up to Benjamin Carson, a retired neurosurgeon. He inspires me through his books and his life history. I don't look at my background nor family status because people who triumph never use their circumstances as an excuse. If all goes well, I will start my tertiary education next year and pursue my dream career. My message to SKY Girls is, “Be committed to your dreams y'all!”.When you are committed to something, there should be no excuses, only results. Do not let fear take over and paralyse you in your desire to make your dream a reality. There is a power that lies within us all”.

My Thing: Reading books and poetry Not My Thing: Gossiping and insulting

Brandy Kaluba Hi SKY Girls, My name is Brandy Kaluba. I am 18 years old from Libala South and I’ve been Joy’s best friend since we met at boarding school two years ago. Joy was a new student at school and some of my friends told us that we look alike, so that’s how we became close friends. The more we started hanging out, the more we realised that we had a lot in common. Like Joy, my dream is to enter the medical profession."My dream is to study medicine or health so that I am able to help others with health problems”. When I was in grade 11, I thought about being either a pharmacist or a nurse. I started to do my research on these two careers and eventually decided that I wanted to be a pharmacist. For my dream to be achieved, I made sure that I passed my grade 12 exam so that I am able to go for my career. I believe that my dream and goal of being a pharmacist will be achieved because working hard helps one achieve their goals.

My Thing: Helping people, spending time with family and friends and reading Not My Thing: Negativity and people who are bad influences

Here are our tips: Know your why It’s important to know why your dream or goal is important to you. Remember why you’re doing what you’re doing. That burning desire will carry you through all the challenges life may throw at you. Focus on the goal, or the dream, and hold on to that no matter what happens around you.

Be patient with yourself When it comes to following your dreams, you need to be patient with yourself. Success doesn’t come overnight. As the famous saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. Part of building resilience is understanding that good things take time. Just put one foot in front of the other, you will get there.

Daily affirmations

How To Build

Resilience By Precious Mwansa

Hey SKY Girl! We know chasing your dreams is a hard thing. Especially when life throws challenges at you left, right and centre. Sometimes, it gets a little cloudy and it feels like maybe your dreams won’t come true. It’s normal to get overwhelmed, and it’s even more normal to stumble and fall on your way to greatness. What matters is getting back on your feet. So we’re here to give you some tips on how to build resilience when chasing your dreams. Resilience is simply “the process of adapting well in tough times”. This means you are able to overcome challenges and rise above them. In Kopala language, we’re sure a resilient person would be called “umupondo” lol.

22

Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome negative thoughts. When you repeat them every day and believe in them, it helps you build resilience. You can even look at yourself in the mirror when you do this. Say to yourself: “I can achieve anything I set my mind to,” “I will succeed,” “I am courageous,” “I am a survivor.” For more affirmations, check out our pull out pages (18 and 19).

Surround yourself with positive people Make sure you have people you can talk to when you’re feeling down or even when you just need to talk. Avoid negative people who just want to bring you down or talk you out of your dream – that’s not our Thing. A good support system can really help you build resilience. Remember, good vibes, only girl! Time for negativity, theliz no!

Be determined Finally, be determined as you chase your dreams. Sometimes even your support system may not give you everything you need to keep pushing. At the end of the day, it’s only up to YOU. The more determined you are, the more resilience you build. Focus on your strengths, and don’t compare yourself to anyone. You are one of a kind.

HOW TO TAKE

THE BEST STUDY NOTES By Trust Mulenga

Hey SKY Girls! Do you have a test coming up? Or maybe you want to study to just be up to date with your schoolwork? Cause who likes work piling up, am I right? Are you finding it kinda hard to study your notes?

Well, it’s time we fix that and make study time fun time! Here are five easy steps to make sure your notes look so cool you won’t want to stop reading!

2. READ! Make sure first to read and understand your material, start by going over a full page or two once, then go over it again but this time try to point out the MAIN terms or ideas. Reading before you write helps you write easier and understand what you’re writing better because you would be writing what you kinda already know. Got it?

4. SHORT NOTING

1. MATERIALS! First, you want to make sure you have all your stationery ready. For me, this is the fun part. Use anything that can help you write better: Think pens, highlighters, pencils, erasers, a ruler, a correction pen etc. (if you’re like me and you always mess things up, this comes in handy and keeps your work looking clean and neat), sticky notes, a note pad and a loose-leaf paper. Everyone has a different vibe, so get whatever works for you, sis.

3. WRITE This is where the writing begins. Make sure each main idea or topic is in BIG, BOLD CAPITAL LETTERS. Also, make sure to underline it. If you’re using pens, it helps have a different colour for your heading and your actual body of text. Black or blue pens are usually the best picks.

AND HIGHLIGHTING

An effective way of taking study notes is first to have short bullet notes instead of a whole long paragraph. There are different ways of bulleting the work that you can use. You could number it. Or you could use little dots and stars. This little flat line is called a hyphen, and it can be used to take a bullet point. There are so many different bullets, and the best part? You can make up some of your own if you like!

5. EXPANDING

These bullet notes should be short and clear. Where a term is really important, you can change your pen so it can stand out or highlight the whole sentence. Pretty easy, huh? Make sure to make as many short notes as you can.

With your notes looking cute and organised like this, you’ll be sure to ace all your tests. Make note-taking your Thing and have fun, girl!

After writing your key terms and concepts, on a separate sheet or in a separate book, expand the words by putting them in your own terms. Use synonyms, for instance. At this point, you can research via Google or from another textbook. Write what you find on a little sticky note and stick it right by the term or concept.

HOW TO

YOUR OWN

CREATEYOUTUBE Part 1

Getting Started

CHANNEL

Hey girl, so now that you have stopped going back and forth in your head and asking your best friend whether or not they think you should start a channel, you have decided “YES, LET’S DO THIS!” So what does it take to execute the vision you have in your head for the said channel? I’m here to help.

Gmail+

First things first, to set one up, all you need is a Gmail account, which you will use to sign into YouTube, and there you have it!

Then, here are a few questions you need to ask yourself:

1. Will my channel have a specific niche, or will anything go? 2. If my channel has a niche, do I know enough about the subject to create content about it constantly?

3. What am I bringing to the table? 4. How will my channel impact those around me? 5. Am I doing this as a hobby or something I eventually want to turn into a career? These questions will help you shape and mould your channel into something that is well thought out and beneficial to your community, rather than it just being vibes without real substance.

Part 2

Content, baby,

Content! So now that we have established the foundation, we have to build the structure. What type of content do you want to put out? Is it vlogs, sit down videos, maybe a little bit of both? YouTube is the oyster, and you are the pearl baby girl, so whatever you want pretty much goes. My recommendation, though? Only put out content that you yourself would watch and are proud of. Don’t choose to put out certain types of content just because that’s what’s popping. Authenticity matters!

26

Part 4

Editing

Part 3

Equipment Software When you are just starting out, do not splurge on equipment because you are not even 100% sure this is something that you will pursue long term. Start with what you have.

I began editing my videos using Windows Movie Maker, but I know there is better software out there now that is free and easily accessible that you can use.

If you already have a camera, good! If not, start with your phone (preferably using the back camera because of better quality), natural lighting (sit in front of a window), and a stack of books (or buckets like I did in the early stages) to use as a tripod.

If you are a MacBook user, iMovie is a great free option. If you are editing on your phone, iMovie (for iPhone users), Video Leap, KineMaster and In Shot are great apps to begin with.

Part 5

Be consistent! I almost sound like a broken record when it comes to speaking on how important consistency is!

Stick to a schedule to hold yourself accountable, and that way, your subscribers also know when to expect content from you. I have Tembo Tuesdays, which have worked great for a good four years now! With any great idea, endeavour or business venture, it reaches its full potential when you put the work into it and are consistent with it.

Part 6

Just

START The most important thing is to start! You are guaranteed to learn so much more along the way!

Have fun with your YouTube journey. Be confident, and be yourself! Nyemba Tembo is a 21 year old Zambian YouTube vlogger and has over 20, 000 followers on her YouTube Channel.

HOW TO MAKE A CHARCUTERIE BOARD Seen charcuterie boards all over Instagram and wondering how to make them yourself? Pronounced (SHAH-KYU-TUH-REE), these boards usually consists of a variety of meat products paired with other side snacks and vegetables like fruit, cucumber crisps, cheese, biscuits, dips etc. Here is a quick step by step process of how you can make one for about ZMW 200.

Step 1 Get Your board ready. The board needs to be big enough to fit all the food you want to have. It could either be circular or rectangular. Then proceed to get small bowls for your dip. The dip bowl is usually placed in the middle of the board.

Step 2 Decide on your food! PRODUCE:

To minimise your costs, buy fruits and veggies that are in season. We recommend pineapples, watermelon and oranges. Veggies like cucumber, chopped carrots or celery are also great. Make sure to get fruits that will keep easily (avoid apples as they turn brown when left out). Use fruits and veggies with different colours and textures as that will make the boards more visually appealing.

COLD MEATS:

Use two different types of cold meats, such as ham and polony. You can use beef, pork or chicken depending on your preference.

CHEESE:

Most charcuterie boards have two types of cheese: try a Mozzarella or Gouda cheese. You can use local brands of cheese like Kaposhi.

SNACKS:

Use different flavoured crisps and salted crackers.

DIP:

Use salad dressing like ranch in your fridge as a dip, or if you have natural yoghurt, make your own dip by blending the yoghurt with a herb like coriander.

Step 3 Prep your food. Cut everything that needs to be cut into different sizes.

Step 4 Build your board! Place your food together, starting with your base. Add the crackers on the sides of the board. These could be on both sides of the board. Then add in everything else in whatever pattern you would like all around the crackers.

28

There you have it, your very own charcuterie board for you and your friends to share. If you make one yourself, we would love to see it! Send us a photo on the @skygirlszed social media pages!

Sporty Girls

One of my favourite quotes is “You don’t get results by focusing on results. You get results by focusing on the actions that produce the results.” Mike Hawkins – Bunty Howard.

Matter Bunty Howard By Denise Cohen

Meet

Zambia’s youth Olympic Champion and Show Jumping Star.

Bunty Howard won a bronze medal representing Zambia at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she jumped a height of 130 cm! In February of 2019, she was named National Sportswoman of the year by the Zambian National Sports Council, There’s no slowing down this young lady. Growing up on a farm right on the outskirts of Lusaka, Bunty was surrounded by a supportive sports-loving family where both of her parents love and rode horses. This provided her with the opportunity to learn how to ride horses at a young age, participating in her first horse show at only 18 months! Every title win holds great significance to the showjumping star, “Big or small, national or international, every one of those awards has determined who I am as an athlete today.” Bunty said. Bunty defines being a young athlete as thrilling and exciting, “Not only do I get to meet new people with the same passion but I’ve got to experience a variety of cultures, foods, and lifestyles while competing in countries around the world. By now, I’ve participated in events in countries in four continents”. Buenos Aires, Argentina; Vejer de la Frontera, Spain; and Lubumbashi, DRC being some of her favourite travel destinations.

Her love for her sport is something Bunty is proud of, “Showjumping can be for anyone, but you have to be willing. To be able to have a partnership with an animal and gain the trust in each other is something so special.” The young athlete has nothing but kind words for the animals she works with, “Horses are one of the most intelligent animals in the world. They are kind, powerful, but they take a lot of patience and care. It’s a two-man deal.” The now 19-year-old recently completed her high school in 2020 online in Belgium while managing her sports career. In between her busy life, Bunty enjoys journaling, art and music. Sneaking in a warm croissant and coffee for a treat. To the SKY girl reading this Bunty would like you to know, “Do something that makes you happy. Do something that makes you want to get out there and reach the top! The sky is the limit. Think of the 10,000 hours concept. If a sporting career is what you are passionate about, put your time and effort into it.”

Hey SKY Girls, we know it can be tough to be a girl, and there are many issues we deal with daily. We receive your questions via our socials, and we’re here to help.

Before I wrote my grade 12 examinations last year my brother, who is my guardian, told me that if I failed, he would kick me out of the house because he would never accept a failure. This led me to have anxiety. I eventually failed, and although he did not immediately chase me, he keeps saying that he will. I am an orphan and have nowhere to turn to. What should I do?

30

I am so sorry to hear about your situation and your anxiety. Do you have any older relatives you can reach out to who can speak to your brother on your behalf? This may help him see reason. Assure your brother that you will rewrite your examinations but also remind him that as your guardian, he has a responsibility to take care of you. Life may be difficult for your brother but making you homeless will not solve his problems. You need to work as a family and as a team to get through your problems together. Try to appeal to his brotherly nature, and show him that you are truly making an effort. Remember, “failure is not the opposite of success, it is part of success”.

I have a crush on a guy at my sister’s school. We started chatting via WhatsApp, and it seemed to be going well. But lately, he hasn’t responded to my messages even though he has read them, and he’s always posting on social media. What does this mean?

If he has seen your messages like you said, then as harsh as it sounds, and as the movie goes, “He’s just not that into you”. As Yo Maps said in ‘Pick It Up, “Siba kukonda timaziba just move on”. We know it hurts, but I promise you’ll find someone who will always want to speak to you. When someone suddenly goes silent on social media, it is called ‘ghosting’. This guy has ghosted you and it’s not kind. Why would you talk to a guy who is not kind?! You can’t force him to talk to you, which leaves you with 2 options – either stop messaging him and try to put it out of your mind, or send him a voice note expressing how you feel one last time and if he doesn’t respond, leave it, babe!

I don’t know how to help one of my friends who seems to be going through depression. She hasn’t been herself lately (she’s got a bubbly personality usually), and it makes me sad to see her like this. Is there a place I can get her help?

You are such a good friend for wanting to help your friend during what must be a challenging time for her. The good news is that if she’s willing to get help, there are plenty of resources available. There are toll-free numbers and counselling centres that we have included on page 12 of this issue. We would suggest that first, you arrange to spend some comfortable one-on-one time with her. Ask if anything is bothering her and offer to listen to her problems and help out if you can. You might find nobody else has thought to ask her, and sometimes just talking about it helps. But if you feel like her problems are better dealt with by a professional, then do encourage her to contact one of the centres we mention on page 12. I wish her all the best!

How To Talk To Your Parents About

Career

Choices By Denise Cohen

Have you been thinking about what you want to do with your life lately? Thinking about post-secondary options like University? An internship? Gaining experience? Talking about our career path with our parents can be scary; that’s something we can all relate to. Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be a writer. I was never silent about my passion for words. Writing as a profession wasn’t exactly the strongest career choice I could present to my parents, though. They wanted me to pick a career path that offered immediate financial stability. Here are some suggestions inspired by my own experiences to help you along with your career path decision making:

Talking Education Options

Speaking To Professionals

When you decide to speak with your parents about the career path you choose, you’ll most likely have many different occupations to pick from. Make sure your education options and your skill sets are lined up. You should make sure you’re presentation-ready by gathering information about the education program and training you’ll need, the schools offering them and the cost.

Professionals and practitioners are respected for the work that they offer. Having the opportunity to speak to one can give you the information you’ll need when talking with your parents about the subject. Internships/part-time jobs are a great way for you to have a taste of your possible future. Find a mentor that can help guide you along your career journey. You can do this by sending them an email or reaching out on sites like LinkedIn. An Informational Interview is another excellent way to gain information on up to date and accurate facts about an industry, occupation, organisation or educational program.

TIP: This would also be a great opportunity to gather information on financial aid or scholarships.

TIP: Make sure your Ideas and plans match your skillset, abilities and interests.

Talking Careers Our parents have had their own experiences with careers that they stand by. You should be well informed about the occupations you would like to pursue. Speak about what it means to you. Print out profiles of women owning the career paths you admire and show these to your parents.

32

Accepting Rejection Finally, when speaking with your parents, the chances of rejection or being misunderstood are normal. ‘Rejection’ sounds scary, but that’s not always the case, this can be a great opportunity to understand why they (your parents) feel the way they do about the topic. It can also help you plan out for future conversations with them.
