FIVE QUES TI ONS, ONE B ROK ER TO E AT: AVELI NA Avelia - LoDo 1550 17th Street, avelinadenver.com Just a month after opening, Avelina earned a spot on Zagat’s list of ten sexiest new restaurants and bars in Denver. The beautiful interior combines a sleek, modern style with cozier touches to create a classy, comfortable environment that pairs perfectly with their rustic New American cuisine. Relax at their pillow-lined bar with a specialty cocktail and enjoy their wide array of shared plates — the charred octopus is an absolute must, and pairs well with their famed charcuterie plates. If you’re looking for something truly rustic, try their hazelnut, rosemary, and bacon brussel sprouts.

Kara Wetherill, Broker Associate at Slifer — Denver What’s the most exciting part about being a broker at SSF Denver? SSF and our sister company East West Partners have so many exciting projects happening at any given point in time. I’m most excited about our new condo development, The Coloradan. East West Partners has been instrumental in changing the downtown Denver landscape and I think this is our most exciting project yet! Name one thing we might not know about you. I climbed Mt. Ranier when I was in high school. If you ever have the opportunity to do it I highly recommend it. The best part is that you get to fling yourself face first down the mountain to practice self-arresting. What is something in downtown Denver that most people don’t know about? There’s a new restaurant named Tupelo Honey that just opened by Union Station. As a Southerner, I’m always on the hunt for authentic Southern cuisine so I’m chompin’ at the bit (as they say in the South) to see if it makes the grade. Name one thing on your 2017 bucket list. International travel, specifically a trip to Cuba! I love exploring new countries and with a toddler, travel has been on the backburner the past few years. I’m ready to get back out and start exploring. I’m particularly drawn to how Cuba has seemingly been frozen in time. Tell us about an upcoming adventure. I’m surprising my best friend to join her on a trip to London for her 40th birthday in June. I told her I couldn’t take the time off of work but am meeting her at the airport in San Francisco pre-flight as a surprise and I reserved the seat next to her on the plane. I can’t wait to surprise her! Kara Wetherill, kwetherill@sliferdenver.com (720) 507-0790

VOLUNTEER: W. COLFA X MAK EOVER Extreme Community Makeover — West Colfax Saturday, May 20th, 2017 — 1400 Quitman Street Saturday, June 3rd, 2017 — 360 Hooker Street Since 2008, Extreme Community Makeover has been working to beautify homes and neighborhoods throughout Denver. Through projects like painting, landscaping, yardwork, and graffiti removal, teams of volunteers and residents work together to help improve the city and make it an even better place to live.

#M Y FAVOR ITEB LOCK Kelly Perkins Founder and Owner, Spinster Sisters Co. My Favorite Block: Washington Street between 9th and 13th (Golden)

Perhaps even more important than the work itself is the community building that takes place throughout the process. After a morning of work, teams enjoy lunch together, giving them an opportunity to build meaningful new bonds that last long after the project is over. In the next few weeks, ECM is working on a section of West Colfax and part of the Barnum Neighborhood. Sign up to help at ExtremeCommunityMakeover.org.

You may recognize Spinster Sisters Co. from the Denver Flea, West Elm, or any number of retailers throughout the city. With roots in Golden, the all-natural skin care company celebrated their fifth anniversary last month, just before the grand opening of Backyard on Blake, home to their RiNo storefront. We caught up with Founder and Owner Kelly Perkins to talk about where she likes to relax between all the excitement: “My favorite block is actually in our own little burg - Golden. It is the strip of Washington St. from 9th through 13th. I love the old buildings, the history, the beautiful parks, the microbreweries, and the great restaurants. In the summer it’s crowded with visitors from within Colorado, as well as out-of-state tourists enjoying the myriad of festivals hosted in Golden, tubing on Clear Creek, listening to music, and enjoying the beautiful scenery. The hiking/biking trails around Golden make it a great day trip from anywhere in the Denver metro area.” Mountain Toad Brewery and/or Golden City Brewery (why not both?) – All the beers. All of the beers. Yum. And they both have great beer gardens with a constantly rotating schedule of food trucks and music. How can you lose? Baby Doe’s Clothing and Accessories – They have a great selection of women’s clothing that is constantly changing. They also have a lot of jewelry and accessories, many that are made by Colorado artists. Abejas – The dinner is out of this world, the cocktails are amazing, but the weekend brunch is what dreams are made of. Maybe the best brunch ever. Literally. It’s making my mouth water just thinking about it. Woody’s Pizza – Super good pizza, great beer selection (are you detecting a common theme here?), and a fantastic patio to enjoy the outdoors in the summer.

E XPLOR E: MC A DENVER The Museum of Contemporary Art 1485 Delgany St There’s always something new to explore at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA). Unlike traditional museums, the MCA doesn’t have any permanent collections. Instead, they feature rotating exhibits that promote creativity in a variety of mediums. As a result, they’ve become the city’s go-to for the latest and greatest in contemporary art from artists around the world. This month’s featured exhibits include a striking street-artinspired entryway, documentary-style photos from the late 1990s in lower Manhattan, a library-esque collection of art objects from the creative community, and an in-depth archival exhibit showcasing acclaimed artist Jean-Michel Basquiat before he was famous. Bonus: MCA offers penny admissions for Colorado residents on the first Saturday of every month!
