Ariella began creating at a young age. She grew up in the Berkshires of Massachusetts where the outdoors played an integral part of her daily life. Her mother, an artist and avid gardener, inspired seasonal art projects that combined nature & creativity. Today, her designs evoke nature with their seasonal relevance. Her lush blend of flowers and branches, fruits and vegetables as well as gorgeous silk textiles and ribbons combine for a final product which is both sensual and evocative. THE BACKDROP MAVEN COLOR. GLASSWARE. FLATWARE. PAPER STOCK. DRESS. TUX. THESE ARE THE ELEMENTS THAT DEFINE A WEDDING. HOW MANY OF THEM CAN YOU SAY WERE CREATED JUST FOR YOU?
Jesi Haack of Jesi Haack Design has been at the forefront of wedding and event backdrop design since 2008, when she first opened her studio. Her personal aesthetic, whimsical imagination and sharp listening skills (not to mention her team of talented producers) have each contributed to her success, but it’s her storytelling abilities that pull the pieces together. Every wedding backdrop Haack designs, sketches, and ultimately unveils uniquely represents her clients, so no two backdrops are alike.

"I start by asking questions about everything that's already been decided - so if there's an invitation that's been designed we'll look at that. I'll need to know about the event space, color themes… Any materials that already exist, and then we can get into more personal details about the couple." The more intimate the details, the better. Haack's personal taste draws her toward midcentury modern elements, an aesthetic that has helped hone her eye for unusual objects. "I really like things that are unexpected, I like to mix things that you wouldn't think would go together," she said. "I take objects that are ordinary and then I try to make them extraordinary." While the average person might feel restricted to paper goods and fabrics, Haack has been known to hang red construction tape as ceiling decor and backdrops, or mount ferns on wooden plaques to accent a room. Perhaps most impressive of all - Haack can imagine, design and build backdrops to be shipped anywhere in the U.S., often without meeting the bride and groom face to face or ever seeing the event space. ing design to past designs as each is so different, so the couple must have faith in her vision of their wishes, and Haack has to assume the couple has been forthcoming about pretty much everything. “It’s great to be able to offer this as an à la carte option for people,” she said. “But there’s definitely a trust factor there. After the couple answers my questions I’ll sketch out a design and once they approve it we’ll move forward with production.” Once both parties are satisfied, those limits fall away and she can focus on combining her artistry with her knack for storytelling to craft the striking, one-of-a-kind backdrops she's known for. "If the groom's style is really modern and the bride's style is really feminine, I'll say, 'Great! Let's combine those things!'” Because, as she said before, "I really like to put unexpected things together." On a day that’s so laboriously planned, detailed and nit-picked, Haack’s unexpected designs bring the playful touch that makes your wedding feel like, well, you.

MAKE THE OUTER EDGES OF ARRANGEMENT. THE IDEA IS TO PLACE THEM FAR ENOUGH APART TO FIT THE AMOUNT AND SIZE OF BLOSSOMS YOU DESIRE BETWEEN THEM. ONCE PLACED, SNIP OFF ABOUT 6 INCHES OF COPPER WIRE TO TIGHTLY SECURE EACH STEM IN PLACE.

NEXT, APPLY FRESH ROSES. SNIP YOUR DESIRED BUDS
SO THAT THEY ONLY HAVE ABOUT 1/2 INCH OF STEM LEFT. IN ORDER FOR THEM TO BE SECURELY ATTACHED TO THE CROWN, STRING COPPER WIRE DIRECTLY THROUGH THE BASE OF THE ENTIRE BUD.

HERE WE PLACED ROSES ON THE RIGHT SO THAT WE
WOULD HAVE SPACE FOR THE LARGE RANUNCULUS BLOSSOM ON THE LEFT. THE WIRE MAKES IT EASY TO TWIST AND SECURE THEM INTO PLACE ON THE CROWN.

Morgan and Drew's late September wedding rewarded guests with a peaceful outdoor ceremony and beautiful weather in breathtaking Denver, Colorado. Morgan's bouquet of pink, red and white flowers popped against her delicate A-line dress, and the couple's soft palette of warm colors and rich neutrals was perfect for their end-of-summer nuptials. The ceremony and reception took place at the Denver Country Club, and Morgan and Drew let the brightly colored flowers and plants on the Country Club grounds shine as a backdrop. After the reception, the couple hopped into a cherry-red, antique convertible getaway car - the perfect start to their marriage. HANNAH ASHE

Julie and Kyle's New England summer wedding took place outside on a misty August day. The two wed under an arch made from birch tree branches and draped with peach, crimson and purple flowers. Lauren's strapless Alvina Valenta gown featured beautiful lace detailing around the bodice, and was comfortable enough for her and Kyle to dance the night away at their tented reception. The overcast day and the mix of dark grays, warm neutrals and wispy design details (see those bouquets!) brought our the vivid greens around the ceremony, letting the couple's outdoor setting shine. Lauren Methia's gorgeous photos show that a few clouds couldn't keep Julie and Kyle's guests down on their big day. HANNAH ASHE

Julia and Jonathan wanted a small, intimate wedding in a charming location, and only one place fit the bill for the stylish Atlanta-based couple. Their December wedding took place at Charleston, S.C.'s St. Luke's Chapel, followed by a reception at Lowndes Grove Plantation. Julia wanted something romantic and dreamy, and the stained-glass-filtered sunlight, pastel color palette and subdued Lowcountry winter weather did the trick. Her embellished Rivini gown and Jonathan's sleek black suit provided the perfect balance between traditional and contemporary styles. Guests enjoyed the comfortable atmosphere at the reception on the Ashley River with soul food, ragtime-style live music and a bonfire to end the evening. HANNAH ASHE

the wonders of water
As your wedding day draws near and you’re putting finishing touches on your planning details, you’ll be getting more and more excited about the big day. Keep in mind, you may also be feeling a bit overwhelmed, as well. This is not the time to forget about taking good care of yourself. One of the most important things you can do for your health and well-being is also one of the easiest…drink water. It’s easy to lose sight of the importance of being well-hydrated, but failing to do so can be a big mistake when it comes to looking and feeling your best at your wedding.

An essential element of life, water is crucial for proper functioning of every one of your cells and every bodily system, delivering nutrients and flushing toxins. While humans can survive for three weeks without food, we can’t live more than three days without water. Most of us need 6-8 8-ounce glasses of water each day. Coffee, alcohol, sodas, and other sugary drinks do not count, and instead, actually contribute to dehydration. Without sufficient water, our skin visibly suffers, appearing dry, wrinkly, and lackluster. In addition, when your body feels it's being denied water, it will defensively retain what it has, and the result is puffiness and bloating. Dehydration, even in the early stages, makes you feel tired and
sluggish, forces your brain to work harder, and can bring down the mood of a brideto-be. Determining the right water balance for your own body is an important key to your health. Many variables factor into the equation: body size, activity level, diet, local climate, etc. Being conscious of these variables will help you attain the balance, but it’s estimated that only onethird of Americans are drinking the right amount of water each day to meet their body’s needs. Don’t rely on thirst to motivate you to drink water. You need to drink water as a habit.

Set a goal and start the day with that total amount of water in several bottles. Drink some when you wake up, pace yourself throughout the day, and swallow the last drop right before bed.

to ‘share’ or not to ‘share’
As our world speeds up faster with each day, and we all enjoy sharing the ins and outs of our days via social media, there is a new branch of etiquette that is relevant for modern day weddings. I'm calling it "wedding tech-iquette" and I hope these next few tips will help brides and guests alike find a happy medium between being in the moment and sharing that moment on social media. As with all parts of social interactions for which etiquette gives us guidelines for gracious experiences, it is best to communicate in a clear manner (for the bride) and then to follow that communication (for the guests).

If you are into sharing your wedding on social media, then create a fun hashtag for your big day or weekend and share it with your guests either on your wedding website, on your save-the-date, as an insert to your wedding invitation (not on the invitation itself and not recommended for more traditional or formal celebrations), or via email. You could even display a sign at your wedding sharing that hashtag and encouraging your friends to use it. It's a fun way to group images and share them with your guests and also those family members and friends who aren't able to attend your wedding. If you are not into sharing your wedding on social media, for privacy, religion (many religious buildings are banning any guest photography these days), or any other personal reason, you should feel confident in that decision and graciously share that information with your guests who hopefully will respect it. It is best to share your request ahead of time on your wedding website or via email and during your wedding weekend at the most noticeable points, such as in your welcome bag insert or any itinerary you might be handing out, as well as on your ceremony program and in a sign at your reception. Celebrity weddings, especially those being published by a national magazine, nowadays are banning all cell phones, smart phones, and cameras for the duration of the wedding and returning them to their guests at the end of the evening. You can take cue as long as your guests
will either be self-disciplined enough to keep their phones off or you should plan a cell phone checking area that is manned at all times and fully secure. Not only does this lack of social media allow for a more intimate and private feel, it also keeps all images of the wedding beautiful and unique. Magazines want to keep their content fresh, so if your wedding planner or you are planning on submitting your wedding to a magazine or blog, best keep it social-media free. There have been many articles by top wedding photographers asking guests to get out of the way (nicely) and let the photographer capture the most breathtaking moments of your ceremony and reception, and frankly I agree with them. Do a little online research and you'll see a plethora of ruined shots because Uncle John insisted on getting into the aisle to capture the first kiss, only to step in the way of the photographer's shot and spoil that incredible image forever. So sad. When planning your wedding or attending a wedding, keep in mind that you will only have a few hours to experience the joy, excitement, and fulfillment of your ceremony, reception, and share those with all who are there, so be mindful of when to whip out your phone and when not to. If you are all about social media and want to memorialize your wedding in many different ways, have at it and let your guests share in the posting. Above all, enjoy yourself and hit the dance floor with style!
