FROM THE EDITOR While assembling our second edition of Smitten since our re-launch in April, I like to think that we have a different approach to how and what we present to you – and this may create cause to stare. As we continue to grow as a team and a magazine – we are ever evolving, looking for fun, fresh ideas for every issue. Trends. We all love them, and are forever on the hunt for the next new wave of style. In the pages ahead we have partnered with amazing talent from across the US and the world to deliver our take on what we call ‘heavy metal’ trends. Starting with our signature shoot, Iron Maiden – spotlighting modern gowns smartly paired with select different metals (page 18). Moving onward you'll find our Trends to Try feature, curated by the darling Calder Clark (page 74). Page after page you'll discover beautifully styled shoots, all spotlighting metals and metallics in their own unique way. In addition, we cover two big topics trending in todays wedding world - hand lettering and unique approaches to bridal portraits, thanks to all of the talented professionals who participated. And speaking of hand lettering, a special thank you to Lindsay Sherbonday of Lindsay Letters who so graciously worked with me on this issue’s cover vision. Enjoy, and remember we have curated all of the top ‘pins’ over on Pinterest, so get busy getting inspired!

NEW LIFE FOR

AN OLD CRAFT HAND LETTERING AND CALLIGRAPHY HAVE BEEN GAINING MOMENTUM FOR YEARS NOW, AND THE ONCE-ELITE STYLE IS BECOMING ACCESSIBLE TO BRIDES LIKE NEVER BEFORE. Hand lettering is a labor of love - love of the technique, the finished piece and the important role it plays in a client’s life. “People are really appreciating the process; that they can feel ink on the page” Sally Balt of Seattle-based studio La Happy muses. For big projects Balt spends days on the calligraphy alone, after spending time polishing the concept with her client and before proofing and editing the text. The popularity boom of this craft coincides with several other hand-made, small-batch products and services, like farm-to-table menus, furniture repurposing, film photography and many other DIY trends. Hand-crafted works like calligraphed or hand-lettered envelopes stand out as uniquely imperfect among other art forms. “I think that people really appreciate that somebody, a human being, has touched their invitation,” says Lindsay Sherbondy, the hand letterer behind Belvedere, Illinois-based studio Lindsay Letters.

Like her fellow calligraphers across the country, Sherbondy creates more than a beautiful envelope or a customized invitation - she also presents the tone for the most important day of her client’s life. It’s the combination of delicate, flowing style and friendly quirks that has made calligraphers and their craft so prominent throughout the wedding industry. Calligrapher Elizabeth Porcher Jones, who has run a small studio for more than 20 years shares, “People want something that’s uniquely theirs.” “Something that’s art.” Elizabeth Fishburne, a marketing professional for whom Jones calligraphed wedding envelopes agrees, “The envelope is the first thing our guests would see when they received the invitation. I wanted them to feel special when they saw the calligraphy,

to know that this was a special piece of mail.” Sherbondy asserts that the personal touch in both product and process is what sets hand-lettered invitations and envelopes apart from graphically designed pieces. “I think people really appreciate the personal nature of it,” she says. “These events are some of the most personal times of your life. So to be able to write something that really has personality is so important because it is the first step forward and it does create the tone for the event. I think hand lettering does that in a way that maybe 100 percent computer-generated type doesn't do.” Jenny Sanders, half of the duo behind Scottsdale’s Moira Ink, believes that image-driven social media is responsible for inspiring people’s rediscovered affection for hand-

made products. “We're pretty involved in Instagram and posting our work.” Brides who were relegated to a small selection of invitation themes in years are now exposed to a world of customized options thanks to Instagram and other channels. Social media like Instagram and Pinterest have made Sanders and business partner Jessica Beltran more aware of other artists as well. Since Beltran first incorporated calligraphy into Moira Ink’s sister company Moira Events in 2009, the media landscape has changed drastically for small business- owners. Sanders says, “we weren’t aware of nearly as many calligraphers that were out there a few years ago as we are now because of how the social media world has connected people and gotten work out there.” But the two recognize that these media channels do more than connect clients and artists; Sanders and Baltran have found that the work they post influences the type of work clients request. Beltran explains, “clients tend to want the work they've seen most recently. I just told a friend who was complaining about how everybody just wants black ink, so I said ‘just throw some color on your Facebook and your Instagram and people will start wanting color,’ and sure enough that’s exactly what it was.” Pinterest in particular inspires countless brides, who weed through hundreds of boards entitled “calligraphy” and “hand lettering,” and thousands of wedding-themed pins. Looking at what brides-to-be have amassed on their boards can be a wonderful starting point. “I always have clients use Pinterest or pull images they really like and put together a mood board - things that inspire them,” says Balt. From there she meets with the client to move for-

ward with a defined concept, but a visual collection is always the first step. On the other hand, too much access to existing work can stifle the creative process. “I feel like people are seeing so much inspiration out there now that they're coming to you with a fully fleshed out concept,” Sherbondy said. “When I started doing this there was nothing to point at. People were coming to me with a dress and a fabric swatch and their personality.” While Sherbondy also takes to Pinterest for inspiration, she refuses to follow fellow calligraphers because the work out there is just too good. “In order for me to not go crazy thinking 'I suck at this!' I have to just be inspired by furniture instead.” Sherbondy’s reluctance to follow her peers through social media speaks to those media’s strength; the two most significant channels in this visual industry, Pinterest and Instagram, have risen fast and held their place among older staples like Facebook and Twitter. Beltran is confident that the hand lettering industry, too, will hold out at its peaked popularity. “Calligraphy has that unusual ability to grow very quickly with a trend because it's handwriting. It’s a very adaptable art form - if a style changes, you evolve with it.” Unlike Pinterest and Instagram, however, Beltran sees something in her industry that technology- based fields lack: Simplicity. Calligraphy, she says, “doesn't require software or programming, it doesn't require stock or overhead. It’s ink and a pen.”

GLENSHEEN MANSION

D U L U T H, M I N N E S O TA

photographed by LAURA IVANOVA PHOTOGRAPHY

Perched on the shores of Lake Superior, Glensheen Manor was the timeless setting for Madeline and Brian’s wedding. While the estate lent turn-of-the-century beauty, the events of the day were far from stuffy. Instead, the couple updated their historic venue with a color scheme of charcoals, grays, and ivories. The bride’s taste for fashion was represented in her Oscar de la Renta gown and the two different pairs of shoes she wore for the affair: both by Christian Louboutin, of course. Keeping with the couple’s passion for fashion-forward glamour, architectural graphics were seen throughout the event. Gray and ivory linens in chevron and linking patterns dominated the tablescapes. The patterns were replicated in the cake and the throw pillows adorning the ivory lounge furniture. A touch of whimsy softened the steely color palette and linear graphics: baby’s breath were used for the centerpieces and as an installation above the dance floor. While the chill of the night crept in across Lake Superior, the couple danced beneath the cloud-like installation. AUTUMN BRIM

A ski resort in the Swiss Alps provided the perfect venue for Scottish couple Charlotte and Dave’s destination nuptials. The bride donned a beautiful Maggie Sottero gown that glistened as the sun set, and the groom wore a traditional Scottish kilt as a nod to his roots. Friends and family flew in from all over the world and enjoyed a true winter wonderland as Charlotte and Dave filled their palette with soft neutrals offset beautifully by snowflake details. As their soiree came to a close, the bride and groom invited guests to watch as fireworks lit up the winter Swiss Alps sky – a beautiful start to their marriage indeed. CARLY TOTTEN

THE WILLIAM AIKEN HOUSE

CHARLESTON, SC

photographed by LEIGH WEBBER PHOTOGRAPHY

Pulling inspiration from Charleston’s William Aiken House, the bride and groom created a garden themed fete filled with a dash of tradition and a pop of formality. Judith walked down the rose petal adorned aisle in a gorgeous lace Paloma Blanca gown toward Tony who waited underneath a chuppah complete with a stunning crystal chandelier. The new Mr. and Mrs. danced the night away with family and friends surrounded by a palette filled with whites, blues, and gold – the perfect look for an early fall wedding filled with joy. Cheers, y’all! CARLY TOTTEN

that she’s already gotten these images out of the way alleviates any stress on her wedding day and allows her to focus on herself and her new husband’s photos as a couple.

Did Lindsay consider her wedding's overall style and location while planning for her portrait? Lindsay really wanted her bridal portraits to look as if they were taken the same day of the wedding so naturally we headed out to her venue at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. We took them at the perfect time as the azaleas were just blooming so any location we chose had the garden romance feeling that she wanted.

I usually ask my client if they want to have the wedding’s overall style/location to influence the planning of their bridal session. Sometimes they definitely want the two to be cohesive and sometimes they want something totally different. How the client feels about wearing the dress in front of my camera is what matters most. 122 | F A L L / W I N T E R 2 0 1 3

Did Laura consider her wedding's overall style and location while planning for her portrait? Laura’s portrait session was at a different venue from where she was getting married. This is another wonderful thing about bridal portraits, you can do them wherever you like! If a bride decides not to have her portraits at the same venue, I often suggest choosing a location that have a variety of options as it helps to mix it up a little through the bridal session.

LAKE MARTIN, AL

Whitney and Lance’s day had all the hallmarks of a young bohemian couple. Whitney did her hair and makeup that same morning and fixed flower hairpins from Forever21 in her locks. While the Jim Scott Sr. Garden’s featured organic colors of green and taupe, the bridesmaids brought a note of citrus in their orange dresses. The bride walked down a sandy aisle to a woven arbor adorned with wisteria booms. She later described the moment in one word – magical. There Lance awaited her, wearing an Urban Outfitters vest and TOMS. The romantic, undone feel of the ceremony carried into the reception, all executed by the sharp eye of the bride who coordinated the entire affair without professional help. Hand-cut flowers in mason jars sat atop old books with yellowed pages and the open ceremony and reception space invited the botanical elements of the gardens into the event. The DIY features – decorations made by the bride, cake by the bride’s sister – helped tell the story of the free-spirited, young romantics. AUTUMN BRIM

WANT THE PERFECT SMOKY EYE?

look no further, we have broken it down to 4 steps for a modified smoky eye – then 4 more steps to our ultimate smoky eye

The trick to creating a smoky eye is to take things in stages, and layer products. Begin with a primed eye lid. Here I used Urban Decay's lid primer in Original, from lash line to brow. A primed eye will take and hold on to color much longer than a bare lid. Creating smoky eyes are all about color, placement of liner, and blending. All a smokey eye involves is layering of colors, and blending. L O T S of blending. And then some more blending. The key is to take it in stages and build up to the intensity you desire. Many brides like a "modified smoky eye" to begin with. Steps 1-4 tell you how to get that beginner look. Steps 5-8 tell you how to build up to a full-blown smoky eye.

156 | F A L L / W I N T E R 2 0 1 3

THE MODIFIED

SMOKY EYE

1/

Apply eyeliner closely to your upper lash

line. Using a "pencil" brush (a compact, densely packed and pointed tip), blend the eyeliner until it's 3/4 the size of the original line you drew on. Don't worry about drawing a perfect line because the blending motion will correct any "mistake." Make sure to swipe the pencil brush into your lash line. This creates color continuity.

2/

Tightline the upper/inner lash line. Do this

by lifting your eyelid and placing a soft eyeliner pencil along the inner upper rim of your lash line. When you deposit color here, it helps give your lashes more definition while making your eye color "pop." Then using the same eyeliner, deposit color on the lower rim of your eye. This is called the waterline.

3/

Line under your lashes with a soft gold or

other light color (not the color used on the upper lid). The light color under the bottom lash line will help open your eye and keep you from feeling quite as smolder-y as a full-on smoky eye.

4/

Go back and touch up your eyelid primer,

keeping a nude-ish lid.

SMOKY EYE

5/

Using a dense, shorter-bristle brush, begin

applying a very dark shadow (black, midnight blue, or deep brown shade) at the lash line and over the entire lid. Pack it on, but only on the lid.

6/

Blend, blend, and blend some more. Use

circular motions to move the dark color over the entire lid.

7/

The blending will lighten and move the col-

or from the lid into the crease of the eye. Do not apply more product at this point. . . work with what you've already applied. At this point, you should see the smokey eye taking shape. . . the darkest part at the lash line, gradually fading up into the crease. Apply a light shade over the crease, up onto the brow bone and finally using the lightest eyeshadow under the brow.

8/

The last step is sweeping some of the dark

shadow under the lower lashes to round out a complete smoky eye.

BAND

/ VS /

DJ

raise the roof, not the budget When I walk into a wedding reception, the first thing I do is check out the music. Will it be a band tonight, or will it be a DJ? I like both options, personally. But while I enjoy the energy of a live band, the more I see really good DJs, the more I appreciate the advantages of this choice for music. First and foremost, a DJ costs less than a live band. This is true across the country (except in the case of celebrity DJs, but that’s another story). For budget purposes, a DJ is always the cost-effective choice. But the decision to hire a DJ instead of a band is much more than a money ruling, and it doesn’t mean that you’re settling for less.

160 | F A L L / W I N T E R 2 0 1 3

Most DJs offer a variety of packages to accommodate different budgets. Ask for recommendations from your other vendors (reception venue, caterer, event coordinator, etc.). People in the wedding business in your area will have a sense of which DJs are the most popular and which are the highest/lowest priced. Because DJ prices vary considerably, call around to a number of DJs in your area and then set your music budget. Some will price by the hour (typically $150/hr$250/hr), and others will charge a flat rate for their service. If you want the DJ to the ceremony music, as well, be sure to factor in that additional cost. Be cautious. A DJ that charges just a few hundred dollars for several hours is likely to be a hobbyist.

If you’re looking for a wide range of music genres to be played throughout the night, DJs have access to thousands of songs, and those songs will sound exactly like you expect them to. Not only will you be able to have the song of your choice for your first dance (a band sometimes has to learn a particular song for you), but your guests can make requests, volume is easily controlled, and if the dance floor starts to clear, a DJ can quickly mix songs and get everyone grooving again. Most DJs offer a variety of packages to accommodate different budgets. Ask for suggestions from your other vendors (reception venue, caterer, event coordinator, etc.). People in the wedding business in your area will have a sense of which DJs are the most popular and which are the highest/lowest priced. Because DJ prices vary considerably, call around to a number of DJs in your area and then set your music budget. Some will price by the hour, and others will charge a flat rate for their service. If you want the DJ to the ceremony music, as well, be sure to factor in that additional cost. Be cautious. A DJ who charges just a few hundred dollars for several hours is likely to be a hobbyist. Bands typically require a lot of space in a reception venue, but DJs rarely need more than a table for their equipment. This

makes it easy to relocate a DJ should there be some last minute floor plan changes that you or your wedding planner need to make. Consider the fact that DJs don’t take breaks throughout the night. Bands, on the other hand, need to break at least once during the course of a reception. If you decide to go the DJ route, do your homework. The key is to find a DJ whose style matches your idea of the reception. You want to see the DJ in action. Don’t go crash another couple’s wedding reception, but do ask to see a taped performance, and ask for referrals. Inquire about back up equipment, too. A good DJ always has a Plan B. Scratch Weddings, a music company that represents the largest team of DJs in the country says, “There is definitely a misconception that to build the proper soundtrack for your wedding vision you need a pricey wedding band. But it’s just not true!” Great DJs are artists in their own right, providing thoughtful music mixes for your whole guest list to enjoy and sought after value for you and your wedding budget.

There are so many wonderful customization and personalization options these days, that you could design six different beautiful invitations all of which would set just the right tone for your wedding. Keep in mind that setting the tone for your wedding via your invitations is about more than just selecting ink colors to coordinate with your decor or the style of calligraphy and selection of stamps, one of the most defining elements which sets the tone for a formal vs. informal wedding and the varying degrees of tradition or modernism therein, is the wording of the invitation. There is a correct way to word a formal invitation for a wedding held in a religious building, which is different from one not held in a religious building, and which is also different from the more expansive options when wording an informal invitation which can be much more playful. Here are a few examples of how to word your beautiful invitation to make sure that your guests get a good sense of what to expect and look forward to prior to your big day! Katherine and Rafael’s love story was told by candlelight. Katherine wed Rafael underneath a leafy arch, wearing an Aire Barclona gown and lace-trimmed veil. The dramatic silhouette of her gown set her apart from her bridesmaids, who wore soft, bridal-inspired hues. After the ceremony, the couple and their guests – many who had traveled far to see the wedding - proceeded to the Hacienda San Gabriel de Las Palmas, an old building rich with the history of Mexico. Traditional Spanish elements tied in perfectly with the hacienda and the couple’s heritage. A fountain decorated with flowers and votive candles greeted the guests. Inside, hundreds of candles threw yellow light onto the arches and dark wood ceilings of the venue. Ceramic glassware, a nod to the Hispanic art form of pottery, were filled with petite rosebuds. The bride shed her Badgely Mischka heels for a pair of Old Gringo cowboy boots. It was a good thing that she did. By the time all the candles had burned low and the last of the lingering guests had said their goodbyes, it was 6am. AUTUMN BRIM

RIVER OAKS CHARLESTON

SOUTH CAROLINA

photographed by TIM MCMANUS

Filled to the brim with Southern details, Emily and Ken’s vintage, handmade wedding was set at the picturesque River Oaks venue along the Wando River outside of Charleston. Emily looked stunning in her lace Monique Lhuillier gown and dreamy Jimmy Choo heels as she and her dashing groom recessed down the aisle to “Oh, Happy Day” sung by a Charleston gospel choir. At the reception, guests enjoyed a family style meal filled with ingredients from local farmers as well as cocktails featuring wine and spirits from Nashville while sitting at tables underneath strands of string lights along the river. Of course a fun-filled wedding is not complete without dancing, so Emily and Ken kept guests out on the floor square dancing under the Southern sky before a late night visit from Diggity Donuts capped off the evening.
