EDITOR´S LET te R
DE L L A MACNICHOLAS CO-FOUNDER & EDITOR IN CHIEF
I often have those pinch myself moments as I look back to where it all began. A southern gal who started a wedding blog focused exclusively on the sweet city of Charleston, SC. A town brimming with a collection of nationally recognized wedding vendors that catapult weddings into works of wedding art.... What more could a wedding blogging, details obsessed girl ask for? It has been an amazing, beautiful ride filled with daily wedding prettiness at The Wedding Row™. A ride that has led to a growing collection of regional wedding blogs. A network that brings gorgeous global wedding trends to a local stage. A place where brides can truly connect the dots between the vendors and the inspiration. From a local blog was born a global stage, Smitten. A foundation of loveliness, our very own e-glossy. The Look book of Wedding Fancy was created out of our adoration for all things wedding and blissfully wonderful. A guide through the “what’s really important” to the modern bride. We poured our wedding hearts and souls into Smitten to bring you the most useful, wedding filled, matrimonial eye candy publication possible. Our premiere edition is rooted in our heritage; the grandeur of southern style. A place where grace is the epitome of elegance and where hospitality and opulence reign supreme. Southern nuptials boast beauty from the splendor of the Appalachians to the city chic metropolitan fete. From the historically charming affair to the quaint seaside soiree. Special thanks to Becky Hoppmann, Smitten’s Creative Director and Editor, you made this edition possible. I also want to graciously thank all of the contributing editors.

Inspiration. That's a word you'll hear a lot in the coming months on the pages of Smitten. I find inspiration from that great vintage find, or my mad obsession with patterns, or a simple conversation with my children. I am especially inspired by the endless energy of Smitten Editor-in-cheif, Della MacNicholas, whose vision I have had the pleasure of shaping. Hopefully the inspiration you find here will help make your wedding day one you will always treasure.

Classic and Enchanting
“We wanted the wedding to feel elegant, classy and filled with Southern charm,” bride Taylor says with a smile, recalling the sweet, easy touches that made her big day a Lowcountry dream. From the blossoms to the beverages, every detail was an homage to the deep south. Standing against a serene tidal creek and soaring oak trees, the bridal party held lush bouquets of gardenias and hydrangeas as Taylor and Andrew said “I do.” After the vows, guests kicked back for a Carolina evening to remember, indulging in sweet tea vodka cocktails and traditional barbecue sliders between dances. And for dessert? The couple invited close friends and family to late-night s’mores by the fire pit at the CLAIRE E. KEYS Inn—because sometimes a slice of cake just isn’t enough. R E A L

LEONARD WILLIAM AIKEN HOUSE S O U T H
C A R O L I N A
photographed by BERNARD VILJOEN details by CHARLOTTE ELIZABETH
Traditional Charm Meets Safari Chic
We just could not take our eyes off of this stunning wedding that screamed regal with a healthy dose of comfortable chic. The phenomenally talented team at A Charleston Bride continues to inspire us with their seemingly effortless design perfection. The William Aiken House was transformed with tones of white, cream and gold. The couple's wedding logo was woven through the evening all the way from the invitations to the monogrammed napkins and from the dance floor to the favors. After the I do's and a posh dinner, guests were instantly transported from the opulence of Charleston to a South African safari. The reception tent, outfitted with palm trees, game skins, and animal print cushions created, "a lounge atmosphere that influenced the energy of our guests and set the stage for an amazing evening I never wanted to end." GOOD to KNOW
w e d d i n g phot ography a brief histor∞ The number of wedding photographers is on the rise and do you ever wonder how we all got here?
THE IDEA OF COMMEMORATING A WEDDING WITH A PORTRAIT IS A VERY OLD TRADITION. BEFORE PHOTOGRAPHY EVEN EXISTED, IT WAS COMMON FOR THE WEALTHY TO HAVE A WEDDING PORTRAIT PAINTED AS PROOF THAT THE COUPLE HAD INDEED MARRIED.
In the 1840’s, Louis Daguerre invented the Daguerreotype, a photographic process that allows a direct positive to be made in the camera. Not only did a daguerreotype create a unique image, it could also be copied by re-daguerreotyping the original. Alas, the “reprint” was born! As the popularity of daguerreotypes spread, the art of wedding photography was born. 2010 Wedding Portrait, Nick and Katie Ciavarella, Australia Artist: Leigh Webber Photography 54
.
J U LY / A U G U S T
.
SMITTEN
The process of creating a daguerreotype was laborious and the equipment cumbersome, thus the style of wedding photography was very formal much like the painted portraits had been. Many of the new photographers had originally been painters. This is why we often see the elaborate painted backdrops in older photos. Through out the 1800’s, wedding photos often took place in a studio, often times after the event. In the case of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, their wedding photo was a recreation that took place 14 years after their wedding. Technology has a history of driving the evolution of wedding photography. By the end of WWII, roll film and the compact flash bulb had come along and allowed for incredible freedom. For the first time, wedding photographers could come out of the studio and to the wedding. This signifies a big change in the way wedding would be photographed.

The addition of video capabilities has catapulted digital cameras even further, spawning “fusion”, a combination of still and video images. In fact, wedding videographers are ditching their video cameras and buying still cameras that have the capability to shoot video instead. Leigh Webber Photography
In the 1950’s, the wedding industry was booming. Marriage was reaching its peak in popularity as soldiers came home. Many of the new wedding photographers were these same soldiers, who had been trained to photograph in the military. Many wedding photographers worked “on speculation” at this time. Instead of being hired for the day, they came for free and took photographs in order to sell prints later. As 35mm cameras with an electric flash became more accessible to the masses, the wedding photographic style began to evolve again. Amateur photographers who were not trained in the art of the formal staged poses took instead a more photojournalistic approach. Thus, the divide between “traditional” and photojournalistic” styles began. The biggest and most obvious change in recent years has been the advent of digital photography. In 1999, Nikon put out the D1, a 2.74 megapixel camera for $6k, making it affordable to professional photographers. Ever since then, the tide has been changing and there has been a mass move to digital photography.

In an interesting turn of events, and perhaps as a backlash to all of the change, film is making a comeback. Many appreciate the aesthetic of film and its nod to the old days. Compared to digital, shooting with film requires more calculation before firing the trigger, resulting in fewer but perhaps more precious shots.
IN AN INTERESTING TURN OF EVENTS, AND PERHAPS AS A BACKLASH TO ALL OF THE CHANGE, FILM IS MAKING A COMEBACK.
Many will agree, however, that digital is here to stay. Hugo Bertrand, landed the “gig of the century” photographing the Royal Wedding portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. When asked about the camera he used, the Hasselblad H4D-50, a 50-megapixel medium format digital camera, he stated, "Oh yes, definitely digital - Kate and William are a modern couple and they go with the modern age" LEIGH WEBBER / LEIGH WEBBER PHOTOGRAPHY

“The end of the night….Chad had kept our honeymoon location a secret from me and all of our family and friends. At the very end of the reception the guests were given flags of our honeymoon destination to wave at us as we made our exit. The biggest and sweetest surprise by far was our getaway car. As we were waved out by our honeymoon flags, there was a 1974 Landcruiser waiting for us. Chad had the car completely restored as a wedding present for me. I was totally and completely shocked!”

Timeless Sophisticated Charm
What’s in a dress? Just about everything. Southern bride Erin says her gown—a stunning, 20s-inspired number fit with cap sleeves and a trumpet silhouette—“ended up setting the tone of the whole wedding, which was reminiscent of The Great Gatsby.” Held at her parents’ secluded home in North Carolina, the sprawling greenery, alfresco cocktails and grand, light-strung tent (complete with chandeliers!) made the day every bit a storybook occasion. But beyond the old-world glitz and glamour, Erin and Wyatt say that their most cherished memory belongs in the family yard, exchanging vows beneath old, sky-reaching trees. CLAIRE E. KEYS

GOOD to KNOW
G U EST
LIST
E
Etiquette
I often tell my brides that working on their guest list is one of the most challenging parts of the wedding planning process, because it combines emotions and economics for everyone involved.
As you gather names and addresses and figure out the size and ensuing mood of your celebration, it is important to keep in mind a few etiquette components of a gracious guest list. Taking the time to get all the pertinent information of your guests' names, titles, and addresses and then hand addressing those personally or by a calligrapher, tells your guest that you genuinely care about inviting them and setting the right tone for your wedding before they even see your invitation or join you at your wedding. It is best to start the process early with all family members involved in the planning process and to ask them to

gather as much data as possible as soon as you have decided on whom will be invited. Getting middle names and physical addresses takes more time than you might anticipate especially in our digital age as fewer people use their formal names or share home addresses on a daily basis. Do not assume that all professional calligraphers or people offering envelope addressing services will be familiar with the subtleties of guest list etiquette, so be sure to consult an etiquette expert or enthusiast prior to submitting your guest list and envelopes for addressing. If scouring the internet for answers to any etiquette
questions, I recommend going with reliable sources, such as www. EmilyPost.com, and not following a random subjective submission which may not be in keeping with traditional protocol. It is best to order at least 10% extra envelopes for any addressing mistakes and changes to your list as guests move, relationships change, and the inevitable postal service misplacing a few of your invitations. Your wedding guest list will most likely grow from its first draft and save the date mailing to the final invitation mailing, so be mindful of including your nearest and dearest on the earliest drafts to make sure you don't overcommit yourself as the full scope of your wedding plans take shape. Anyone who receives a save the date, engagement party or shower invitation must receive a wedding invitation, but the reverse is not an absolute, so if your venue can only hold a limited number of guests keep that in mind with your early wedding stationery suite mailings. Remember to enjoy the process of getting your guest list organized as it is a wonderful way to select and familiarize yourself with everyone who will share your joy on your wedding day! Classic Elegance With Modern Flair
Stop the presses because this wedding had us begging for more. We simply could not get enough of every single beautifully placed detail. Each extraordinary element was attended to from the stunning cake and exquisite calligraphy to the boxes of sugary goodness. An event designed to be the embodiment of time honored southern sophistication complete with a lavish riverside plantation as the backdrop. Kristin Newman Designs teamed up with GATHERING FLORAL + EVENT DESIGN to create a powerhouse of style and matrimonial gorgeousness all captured masterfully by the brilliantly talented A Bryan Photo. Natural, Beautiful, Relaxed
A wedding designed to reflect the soul of Edisto Island, tranquil, organic and beguiling. The bride and groom fancied an affair where the design stayed true to the natural grandeur of the barrier island. The dĂŠcor was pure and simple; selected so that the beauty of the historic church and surroundings of the Brick House could shine as the backdrop to the nuptials. GOOD to KNOW
When it comes to bridal portraits there are so many factors to take into account... Recent bride, Mary Driver, shares her TOP DO´S & DON´TS with us... Let class begin!
Do.
Do.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK. BROWSE WEDDING BLOGS AND WEBSITES TO DETERMINE YOUR STYLE, VISION, AND GOALS FOR YOUR SESSION. MY STYLE: TRADITIONAL, CLASSIC CHARLESTON, AT HOME, AND FAMILY INSPIRED. VISION AND GOALS: TO LOVE THE IMAGES NOW AND FIFTY YEARS FROM NOW.
DO UTILIZE YOUR SESSION AS A TRIAL RUN. HAIR AND MAKEUP ARE OBVIOUS TO FIND OUT WHAT WORKS OR IF THERE ARE ISSUES. HOWEVER, YOU SHOULD ALSO USE THIS TIME TO GET COMFORTABLE MOVING IN YOUR WEDDING DRESS, SHOES, AND UNDERGARMENTS, OR EVEN TO GET COMFORTABLE BEING THE BRIDE!
Do.
Do.
DO MAKE IT PERSONAL. I CHOSE TO TAKE SOME SHOTS WITH SPECIAL ACCESSORIES LIKE AN HEIRLOOM BLUE TOPAZ RING, MY GRANDMOTHER’S 1940S WHITE GLOVES, AND A LACE HANDKERCHIEF THAT WAS HAND TATTED BY MY GREAT-GRANDMOTHER. THESE MAKE THE IMAGES ALL THE MORE SPECIAL.
DO WORK WITH YOUR SURROUNDINGS. DARRELL AND I USED CHURCH STREET AS OUR CANVAS WORKING WITH THE BEAUTIFUL IRON WORK, BRICK STREET, AND MY NEIGHBOR’S VINTAGE BLUE FIREBIRD.
DON'T. DON’T FORGET TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER. YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER, LIKE YOUR FIANCÉ, IS NOT A MIND READER. SHARE WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU AND DON’T BE AFRAID TO REQUEST CERTAIN SHOTS. A PORTRAIT WITH WROUGHT IRON PIG STATUES THAT MY PARENTS BROUGHT HOME FROM AN ENGLISH GARDEN WHEN I WAS A CHILD, DON’T MIND IF I DO!
DON'T. DON’T PUT TOO MUCH PRESSURE ON YOURSELF. . . YOU’LL MISS OUT ON ALL THE FUN!

Rustic Southern Chic
Chelsea and Ryan's plantation nuptials were the essence of southern chic. Dazzling old world charm perfectly mingled with modern day delights. Guests at this {dare we say rustic} soirĂŠe, partook in a barrage of luxury such as hand rolled cigars that were enjoyed in posh lounges. Lounges covered in custom fabrics and monogrammed pillows while their palate pleasing benne wafers and signature cocktails were served. Now this is my definition of rustic...sign me up, please. The adorable bride then continued to woo us with the gorgeous coral color palatte and by wearing a custom designed exit dress made from her mother's own wedding gown. R E A L

Seaside Soirée
Where do we begin with this knock out of a wedding? For us, our love affair with this seaside soirée started firmly with the bride. Emery's noteworthy style commanded our full attention. And then, we melted at the lovely Lilly Pulitzer. True southern prep, paired with stunning views and bobbles that would make any girl swoon. And then we read the endearing details surrounding the nuptials and we were, well…smitten. For the bride who had visited Seabrook Island since infancy, the island is a treasure. A treasure trove brimming with memories of growing up on the island and the chapel at Camp St. Christopher. R E A L

An Invitation to the Chapel Chic Stationery for Every Bride The entire tone of your most special day is set when guests open that envelope and inside is a special note from the bride and groom. Whether it is a note of thanks for that toaster or piece of china or an invitation telling everyone the time and place at which you will be saying “forever and always” this one piece of paper can make the occasion. Understated and simple or letterpress flamboyance, whatever you decide, it will be what you and your wedding are all about. It is unmistakable that you will want to choose a line of stationery that you can feel a personal connection with, and by extension you can have a personal connection with the artist. Hanna Nation, founder of GADABOUT stationery and POST iPhone application, is now a bride herself, and she couldn’t understand more the value of this one special fraction of the whole of your most special day. Meet the girl who started the fantastic line of note cards in her college dorm room. With a strong head on her shoulders and her heart tuned to her upcoming nuptials Hanna Nation sits down with Smitten. 160

You started GADABOUT when you were in college. What inspired you to start a company at such a young age? I was lucky enough that the decision to start GADABOUT was never truly deliberate. Looking back, I must have subconsciously known that it was meaningful to me because the beginnings of the “Putting on the Ritz” design can be found in the margins of my boarding school notebook. By the time I arrived at college, drawing had become something I did on an everyday basis. So in the four years I spent there, I pursued a business economics major and created a personal portfolio that would become my first collection.
It certainly is impressive. Have you faced any challenges as a business owner well under 30? Though some of the obstacles I have faced are specific to my business, I know that most of my challenges have been ones that every young girl has faced at one time or another. I started GADABOUT in the beginning of my senior year of college. By the time graduation came around I was so far into it that I had to make a choice we are all familiar with: do what you want to do or do what makes the most sense. I couldn't bring myself to choose the later, so I just went with it. I have loved every minute of not looking back.

And now you have an iPhone application. Can you tell us a little bit about POST? POST is an iphone application that allowed me to combine my love of entertainment with my love of technology. Essentially, it is a quick and easy way to bring a little bit of thoughtfulness to those events where a paper invitation was too formal or the time to get everything together was not available.
How did you come up with the application? There had been enough times in my life where I was spontaneous enough to host a cocktail party the same day or a birthday party for a friend that just flew in. I wanted a better invitation option than a text, call or email. I wanted an invitation that showed just because this is thrown together, doesn't mean it cant be thought out. POST was my response.
GADABOUT and POST both have such a unique look and style. What would you describe as your own style? Who are your style icons? My current style icons would be Olivia Palermo, Reese Witherspoon, and Emma Stone. They seem to know themselves so well that dressing looks effortless and real. I love most every outfit I see them in. I personally tend to stick to traditional basics or a blend of preppy classics and trendy accessories. I love bright, exotic colors, interesting patterns, and simple shapes so much that I often end up choosing outfits that make room for all three.
So, you’re in the invitation/stationary business working frequently with brides and now you are a bride yourself. First of all, congratulations! Second of all, how have you managed running a business while planning a wedding? If I didnt have my mother and adore both of those things, I dont believe I could have made it work. Luckily, most of the creative processes of GADABOUT, like picking colors, choosing paper, and setting the tone, SMITTEN

were very helpful for the wedding. It felt very natural to design the day like I would design anything for a client.
You see so much paper on an everyday basis was it hard picking your own invitations out? Though my company stationery is quite bright and bold, I have always wanted my wedding invitations to be traditional and timeless. I wanted them to resemble my mother and grandmother’s invitation while still staying true to myself. I thought that there was no easier way to do that than calligraphy on cream card stock. Handwriting is just so personal that my choice of calligrapher would be evidence enough of my style. I ended up having calligrapher, Mary Inman touch every piece of it. From the save the date to the master invitation and reception card, her handwriting was the highlight. Even the addressing was written in her hand. I owe her a great deal for my excitement!
What do you think you would be doing if you weren’t in the stationary designing business? I think you would have found me trying to get involved with design in some form or fashion. Maybe an intern at a magazine, doing full time graphic design work, or working for a boutique PR firm. No matter the job, I would be looking for kind, creative people.
Last but not least, we have to ask you, what is your suggestion to the bride out there struggling with choosing her invites, note cards or making any decisions regarding her wedding?
This may sound silly, but take a step back and consider your favorite things. Coastal Charm Classic details and timeless hues of white and ivory set the tone for Casey and Will's elegant, laid back, lowcountry affair photographed by The Connellys. The Daniel Island Club, beset with lush marshes, grand oaks and heart melting river views had us at first glance. The traditional country club setting lent an ageless ambiance to the evening. Stirring thoughts of decades past and replete with grace and charm. R E A L

Southern Chic
We sort of died and went to wedding heaven, a case of wedding lust at first sight when we saw this southern chic meets sassy wedding photographed by Amelia + Dan. The sight of the brides Tiffany blue pretty peep toes and the couple's oh so fabulous vintage mustang getaway had us at hello. And who needs cake when the pioneers of pie at 3.14 Pies are serving up slices of Blackberry Cabernet and Salted Rim Margarita? Just one of the many personal touches that Cait and Bob added to their big day designed by Red Letter Events. R E A L

ALISSA JONATHAN GR AND HYATT AT L A N TA ,
G E O R G I A
photographed by E VA N L A E T T N E R
Vintage Romance As she began her slow walk, wearing a tiered lace gown, delicate jewels and simply swept hair, Alissa was the picture of easy elegance, at once vintage-inspired and decidedly modern. And while all eyes were on her, the bride saw nothing but her groom, Jonathan, waiting at the end of the aisle. The couple’s mixing of natural and regal carried throughout the downtown Atlanta ceremony and reception. “I was going for something very elegant and romantic,” she says, recalling the clusters of white blossoms, purple accents—think violet peonies and eggplant bridesmaid dresses—and endless votives. “I used a lot of them throughout the ballroom.” Waltzing by candlelight? Romantic indeed. CLAIRE E. KEYS R E A L
