EDITOR´S LET te R

DE L L A MACNICHOLAS CO-FOUNDER & EDITOR IN CHIEF

At Smitten Magazine I simply could not be more excited about the fall season, the holidays and yes, all of the amazing fashion sprinting off of the runways for next Spring. Couture was the catalyst...our muse that served as the foundation for ISSUE THREE. We watched with baited breath as collection after inspired and stunning collection sashayed down the runways at the recent New York's Bridal Market. We sat Front Row, went behind the scenes and chatted with designers as they debuted the latest fashions for brides and bridesmaids. Style Editor, Lindsey Nowak joined us in New York to recap the newest trends and glamour to glide down the runway. Working together with Smitten Magazine's team and Creative Director, Becky Hoppmann, we bring you our latest edition. An issue brimming with wedding eye candy and the most swoon worthy inspiration from around the globe. Enjoy!

From her bejeweled hairpiece to the lush flower clusters peppered everywhere, this couple’s wedding walked the line between Old World opulence and femme charm. Their unexpected palette — fuchsia and peacock blue — reigned supreme, coming through in fun details: hand-folded fans in smoky hues, blue mason glass, even an ombre pink cake. The natural setting made for lots of color too, says Kim: “It poured rain, but after we said our vows, we sat down and a rainbow came out of the clouds. It could not have been more beautiful.” CLAIRE E. KEYS

One of my favorite moments of the day was after it had poured rain, my husband and I had said our vows, we sat down at our private table to enjoy each other and a rainbow came out of the clouds. All of the guests exclaimed how gorgeous it was, the setting could not have been more beautiful.

BEFORE THE WEDDINGS FOR NICOLE AND JOEL, ELLEN AND PORTIA, HEIDI AND SEAL — AND LET’S NOT FORGET TRISTA AND RYAN’S SPECTACULAR BACHELORETTE AFFAIR, PLUS TOO MANY CELEB BRIDAL AND BABY SHOWERS TO NAME — BEFORE ALL OF THAT, MINDY WEISS SPENT HER DAYS CREATING CUSTOMIZED INVITATIONS FOR SOCIAL EVENTS.

Her love of modern whimsy and devotion to detail quickly propelled her to the top of the event planning class, and in 1992, she founded Mindy Weiss Party Consultants. Ever since it’s been, well, a party! Fresh off of helping with her own son’s big day, we sat down with Mindy to talk planning, decorative details and the perfect glass of champagne. CK: You've brought to life one-of-a-kind weddings for a long list of couples. Surely, there are lots of different ways to begin the process. Where do you like to start? MW: I have my brides go through random books and magazines to show me what pops out at them. Often there isn’t a defined theme, but we create an environment that just feels good. CK: The cake, the dress, the venue. It seems like the creative theme can stem from just about anything. What's your advice for finding a decorative starting point? MW: Location is always the first thing I consider — is it going to be indoor or outdoor? Rustic? Modern? Vintage? The venue really tends to dictate the feel of the wedding. If we're working an outdoor vineyard

I recently planned a wedding at The One and Only Palmilla in Cabo that was an entire weekend of festivities! Guests were greeted with "OlĂŠ!" welcome bags filled with Mexican goodies. The next day, the couple hosted a welcome party on the beach with a Mariachi band, dinner and dancing in a gorgeous lounge area, right on the shore. On wedding day, the ceremony was on the beach followed by a beautiful and dinner reception, rich with color. Anne Marie has always held the Martha Stewart Wedding book near and dear to heart, taking in every page and dreaming of her own wedding someday. When her big day came, she knew that her bridal luncheon was the perfect opportunity for her very own, feminine, classic, Martha-inspired event to take place. Heather Barrie and her Gathering Floral + Event Design team filled the historic Broad Street Charleston Single Home with a profusion of baby's breath. Garlands, wreaths, and the Mother of the Brides's collection of beautiful vases filled with the sweet blooms transformed the sitting parlor and dining room into what Anne Marie's mother called a bridal fairy tale.

Each guests was given a beautiful crystal vase filled with baby's breath as a keepsake, which also served as their place card holder. Personal Chef and family friend, Chef Ulfie, created a delicious brunch of Crab Benedict, grits, and fruit. Charleston Crepe Company's famous Crepe Cake was served from the sideboard on lovely china plates with the Atkinson's beautiful silver pieces. Possibly the sweetest part of the affair was that all of the ladies were greeted upon arrival with mimosas by Anne Marie's father, brother and the Father of the Brides's best friend, who served as the bartenders‌.all dressed alike in Charleston barkeep attire. No doubt that Anne Marie is the apple of her father's eye. PLANNING & DESIGN KRISTIN NEWMAN DESIGNS FLOWERS & DESIGN GATHERING FLORAL + EVENT DESIGN PHOTOGRAPHY

TOP

10

REASONS TO SELECT

SANTORINI GREECE

1 / THE VIEW

Greece as a whole is one of the most beautiful countries to visit and the Grecian islands are a photographer's dream. The cliffs off the caldera offer the most amazing views, no matter where you are on the island. And let's be honest, nothing beats the view of those white-washed stucco houses with bright blue roof tops and shutters lining the sparkling waters.

2/ HISTORY

The island of Santorini was once a massive volcano that exploded leaving behind a dramatic, circular shaped island. In 1950, another explosion left a fresh volcano that visitors can explore.

3/ BEACHES

Some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece on located on Santorini. The unique red & black sand beaches are perfect for anyone looking to bask in the sun.

4/ EXPERIENCE

Visiting Santorini will provide anyone with a true classic Greek experience - from the views, to the food, to the people, Santorini is Greek culture in a nutshell.

5/ CUISINE

Santorini is full of so many delicious Greek restaurant options; you really can't go wrong no matter where you go. The cuisine is based on traditional Mediterranean cuisine and restaurants use the freshest ingredients for the best dishes.

6/ WINE

Santorini is known for its excellent wine. The unique taste of the grapes from the fertile volcanic soil makes Santorini wines a delicious treat that's unlike any other wine you've ever tasted.

7/ ADVENTURE

While it is a small island, there is plenty to do on Santorini including scuba diving, exploring the volcano, wine tasting, swimming in the natural hot springs made by the volcano, & more!

8/ ROMANCE

The sunsets in Oia are a sight to see and there's nothing more romantic than a dinner cruise for two out to the tip of the island to watch the sunset. Santorini is also the perfect place for you and that special someone to wander around and get lost together.

9/ SHOPPING

The island is filled with fun boutiques and markets to satisfy all tastes.

10 / THE PEOPLE

Every town on the island is filled with locals bursting with small town friendliness. There are few places you can travel where the locals make you feel as if you have been friends for a lifetime. by Katie with EVER AFTER HONEYMOONS

Spanish archways, ivy-laden walls, patina glass — step inside (and get lost in) Michelle and Philipp’s secret garden wedding, a small affair with all the markings of fairytale romance. “It was elegant and country-style,” the bride explains. “But we also incorporated inspiration from Tiffany.” They incorporated the classic blue in dramatic but spare doses, like a box-stacked cake and iridescent linens. The turquoise shock of the location’s swimming pool helped too. We think it was meant to be. CLAIRE E. KEYS

2 DAYS WITH

ROMONA INSIDE THE FUN, FA S H I O N A B L E W O R L D OF KEVEŽA COUTURE

ROMONA KEVEŽA IS, IF NOTHING ELSE, A WOMAN OF GREAT DETAIL. IN A GILDED PARLOR AT THE ST. REGIS HOTEL — A PRETTY JEWEL BOX OF A ROOM — SHE IS STATUESQUE IN A PANTSUIT AT 8:15 AM, MOVING FROM MODEL TO MODEL, CRITIQUING THE ANGLES OF WINGED EYELINER AND SWOOPING BANGS. SHE’S PARTICULAR YET EASYGOING. MATTER-OF-FACT BUT SO MUCH FUN. It’s International Bridal Week in New York City and Romona is prepping for the first of two major showings. She’ll begin with a runway presentation of Romona Keveža Collection, her capsule of couture bridal dresses, heralded in past seasons for its celebration of glamour and serious attention to detail.

128

.

— it’s late 50s, early 60s. But it feels like a timeless look that real brides can emulate.” As Romona oversees the final blotting of lipstick, we leave the hair and makeup room to find our seats in the Library, a tawny, corridor-like space that’s perfect for the debut of her Spring 2012 collection.

I learn that Romona’s signature meticulousness stems from her Lithuanian upbringing. “I come from a European influence,” she tells me. “My mother always had Vogue and European Harper’s Bazaar lying around. I quickly learned about what makes a high-quality garment — the detailing, the stitching, the collar, the hemline — and I learned that there are certain styles that never go out of fashion.”

The show’s feeling is Old World luxe meets pretty Mod. The silhouettes are highly structured in fabrics like Point d’Esprit and French organza. The palette is mid-century Paris — ivory, blush, lavender, Tiffany blue and shocks of black. And beyond color, there are lots of new motifs at play, like mesh one-shoulder overlays, short hemlines and Swiss dot galore.

And so explains the Brigitte Bardot face that Romona’s hair and makeup team is creating in numbers this morning — soft lips, winged eyes, bouffant hair. “We wanted to create a look that was elegant yet sensual,” she explains. “I went through the archives of Bardot’s evening looks

At the end of the show, Romona plucks her mother from the audience for a lingering hug. “She’s my biggest fan, my biggest critic,” the designer later tells me. “She was always dressed to impress. A total perfectionist. I wouldn't be doing what I’m doing today if not for her.”

DAY T WO. We’re back at the St. Regis, now in the Dior Suite (designed by Christian himself!), ready for more with Romona. Today is up-close and intimate, our second date with the designer.

Romona invites us to sit in tufted gray-and-white armchairs. She snacks on a sandwich and asks me if I’d like a cup of tea before we begin. Once we’re settled, she invites one model after another into the room, describing in detail her Legends Collection. It’s a smaller line inspired by “the women who capture the imagination of the world,” she says. “Queen Victoria, Grace Kelly, Kate Middleton, Charlene Wittstock.” The silhouettes are varied, but all equally timeless — a lace bodice dress; a structured asymmetrical ball gown; an easy slip dress for the beach. The concept for Legends stems from Romona’s advice for real brides — to take cues from your own style when selecting your wedding dress. “Go into your own closet as a guideline and look for clues. A t-shirt and jeans girl should be looking for a simple style for her wedding day. To suddenly go out in a big, dramatic dress… it won’t be appropriate. Look like your best self. It will ensure you have a wonderful time.” Beyond that, she says go for fit and quality. “ THE FACT OF THE MAT TER IS YOU’RE GOING TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED IN THIS DRESS. IT WILL BE PASSED DOWN IN PICTURES FOR GENERATIONS — IT’S THE DRESS YOU’RE GOING TO BE REMEMBERED IN FOR ETERNIT Y.” Our time in the Dior Suite is up and we congratulate Romona on an inspiring presentation; an amazing two days. She laughs and thanks us. “It’s a lot like planning a wedding. You have your guest list, your venue, the flowers, music, food. The seating arrangements. And the dress — times 36!” It’s a thought that blurs the line between fashion show and wedding, making the designer’s advice all the more compelling for brides to be: “It goes by so quickly. The real secret is to just plan as best you can, stay in the moment and enjoy.” CLAIR E. The details, and I love details, they came from my love for the Earth and all things vintage as well as the love we have for our families.

The foundation of my inspiration was the venue itself, Figueroa Mountain Farmhouse, which is a breathtakingly beautiful place. It was secluded, rustic, magical, and had a history like our own. 134

The postcard escort cards paired well with the vintage maps I used for flower petal cones and on the 'LOVE' tags I handmade which were tied to each parasol at the ceremony. I bought a box of about three hundred vintage maps at a Flea Market for $8 and can firmly say it was one of my best buys, and represented me perfectly, as I am an avid traveler.

I was a flea market fanatic and Goodwill addict. I bought over 100 vintage bottles, as well as collected hankies and vintage sheets which I made into Napkins by simply cutting them with pinking shears.

The white wedding hankie, with the B embroidery, my Mother made me from fabric from her wedding dress. I also used the lace from her dress to wrap around my bouquet.

I lined Mason jars with old family photos to celebrate family and remember those who have passed. I also had framed pictures of mine, and Jeff's parent's weddings, and all 4 sets of Grandparents weddings.

The dessert bar was a group of collected milk glass, again flea market finds, filled with our favorite candy or topped with doughnuts. It was decorated with old Kitchen items such as a retro set of sugar and flour canisters. 140

“Our wedding theme was Old Fashioned Lemonade,” Caroline says. “Many of our guests were coming from out of town and we wanted them to feel at home. We wanted to create an event that was simply sweet and elegant, combining all of the things that we love here in Charleston.” Sweet and elegant indeed. Held at the historic McCrady’s Restaurant, the bride (turned out in a stunning, tea-length gown) and groom were surrounded by loved ones all night long. “When we walked in as husband and wife,” she recalls, “our friends and family were waiting for us with raised champagne glasses in hand. It was an indescribable, overwhelming moment.” CLAIRE E. KEYS

When we walked into McCrady’s for the first time as husband and wife, our friends and family were waiting for us with raised champagne glasses in hand. It was an indescribable and overwhelming moment to be standing next to the love of my life and surrounded by friends and family. There was so much warmth, the room was glowing.

CHARMING AND NOSTALGIC, SUPER 8 WEDDING FILMS HAVE GAINED TREMENDOUS POPULARITY OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS AND NOT ONLY WORK SO BEAUTIFULLY ALONGSIDE THE CURRENT TREND OF VINTAGE INSPIRED WEDDINGS BUT APPEAL TO THE COUPLE LOOKING FOR A WEDDING FILM WITH A MOOD AND DEPTH THAT IS UNIQUE TO ANALOGUE CAPTURE. For that same reason and in spite of the incredible digital technology available to cinematographers, motion picture film still rules in Hollywood. For those who may be unfamiliar with Super 8 movies, think those old home movies your parents and grandparents have stashed in a box in the attic. Dust, scratches grain and grit, the antithesis to the modern effects filled HD video, making the movie appear as if it were shot in Paris circa 1936, New York 1950’s or the family vacation in the 60’s. Elyse remembers every moment of her walk down the aisle in great detail. “When I hit the rose petals on the aisle — my parents on either side of me, seeing Nick smiling on the other end, surrounded by all of our friends and family — I was walking toward the biggest moment of my life. It was so unbelievably full of emotion and happiness.” It was a feeling of togetherness that came through in every detail: the pre-celebration boat ride, the family tree displayed in vintage frames and the latenight fire pit, beckoning loved ones to have a seat and stay a while. Here’s a bride that knows how to put her own spin on the big day. For Natalia, it was DIY from day one: “I wanted something high-impact, low-budget, rustic garden chic, with a touch of Latin America. All for the utterly un-crafty bride.” We dare to disagree about her talents — from jarred gourmet favors to screen-printed pennants, it was a perfect, personalized celebration. “I brainstormed and gathered ideas that wouldn’t be too difficult to do myself — and wouldn't break the bank.” Mission accomplished. My favorite moment of the wedding was when Tim surprised me by playing and singing one of our songs (“I do” by Paul Brandt). He had our friends and family distract me while he got set up, and then I heard our DJ ask me to come to the dance floor. It was such a special moment – even with a crowd of our guests watching, it felt like we were the only people in the room.

Anna& Anton S A N TO R I N I G R E E C E

photographed by ANNA ROUSSOS

Both from Moscow, Anna and Anton always envisioned a big — and we mean big — wedding. Back home, lavish, days-long affairs with lots of relatives are customary. So when the duo decided to slip away to Santorini for a guest-less affair, it was a thrilling, beautiful escape. Against the impossibly serene Aegean Sea, the couple exchanged vows and rings. What could top that? Two weeks of honeymooning across the Greek Islands. CLAIRE E. KEYS
