Library Antiques Appraisal Event Saturday, October 5th from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm Allan Storinge of the Syracuse Antique Exchange will be on hand to appraise your treasures. 1 item verbally appraised for $3.00 or 2 items verbally appraised for $5.00. Appraisal fee helps support the Friends of the DeWitt Community Library. First-come, first-served basis. Please note: This event will take place in the mall space across from the RiteAid at ShoppingTown Mall. The owner is responsible for any loss or damage to items brought for appraisal. Photos of large or fragile items may be brought instead. Light Refreshments Served.

Historical Programs Curiosities of Central New York Thursday, Sept. 12 @ 7:00 pm DCL Friends Meeting Room Discover some of Central New York’s Curiosities from the world’s smallest church to the Dali Lama’s Tibetan monastery in Ithaca. The book tells the tales of mummies, witches, fairies, and monsters—some of which will be shared at this special book event. Join us and discover the uniqueness of CNY and its lore. About the Speaker: Storyteller Melanie Zimmer, a member of the New York Folklore Society, is the author of three books on New York State lore: Central New York and the Finger Lakes:

Myths, Legends and Lore; Forgotten Tales of New York, and Curiosities of Central New York. She’s currently writing Curiosities of the Finger Lakes, due out next summer.

The Slocums of CNY Tuesday, Sept. 17 @ 1:00 pm DCL Friends Meeting Room Henry & Clara: the Slocums of Central New York The engaging and touching story of Civil War Major General Henry Warner Slocum and his wife, Clara Rice Slocum, both born in Central New York. After the Civil War Henry and Clara moved to Brooklyn, NY, and Henry served in Congress as a U.S. Representative from 1869-1873. Registration Encouraged. About the Speaker: A retired Technical Services Librarian at SUNY Morrisville, Sue Greenhagen is a historian for the Town of Eaton, Village of Morrisville, and affiliated with numerous assorted editorial and historical projects throughout CNY.

Jamestown, Virginia, was not the first British attempt to found a permanent colony in America, nor was Plymouth, Mass. The first was on Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina. The colonists disappeared, and no trace of them has ever been found. What became of them?

Discover the ‘rags-to-riches’ story of the local mare who dominated the mid-1800s racing world, inspiring the Stephen Foster song, Camptown Races. Named ‘Queen of the Turf’ by the New York Times, Flora Temple won 92 races and was the first horse to race a mile in 2 minutes, 20 seconds. Registration Encouraged. About the Speaker: A retired Technical Services Librarian at SUNY Morrisville, Sue Greenhagen is an historian for the Town of Eaton, Village of Morrisville, and affiliated with numerous assorted editorial and historical projects throughout CNY.

Discover the fascinating true story of famous hermit-woodsman Louie Seymour and his biographer Harvey Dunham, centered on Dunham’s photojournals from the 1920s. A Q&A session and book signing will follow this talk. Registration Encouraged. About the Speaker: In 2003, Roy Reehil started Forager Press, LLC. Along with co-author William J. O’Hern, the two have released five highly acclaimed books of regional history. An avid backcountry explorer and trout fisherman, Reehil is also president of the Central Adirondack Search and Rescue Team.

CNY Birding: Attract Birds to Your Yard in Winter. Thirty-nine species of birds winter in Central New York. The variety that come to your feeder will depend upon where you live and the protection afforded to them. Different birds are attracted to different kinds of seeds. Learn what seeds attract which birds and discover the various types of feeders you can make or buy.

Be good to your skin (and it will be good to you). The holidays are approaching. You worked too much, ate too much, shopped too much. It’s getter colder and colder outside, and the heat is on inside. The air is dry, dry, dry. And it shows on your face and hands and elbows… Your skin is crying, “Help!”

About the Speaker: Gene Huggins returns to the DCL for another look at CNY birding. He has been an active birder for 57 years in CNY. He began his hobby by visiting fields, forests, and ponds near his hometown of Waterville, NY. He is President of the Onondaga Audubon Society, a member of the American Birding Association, and the New York State Ornithological Association. Registration Encouraged.

Join herbalist Deb Thorna and learn some tips about getting your skin through the winter. We’ll look at herbal and natural products for the exterior and interior of your body, some of which you can find in your own kitchen! Samples available. Dress to get messy. Chronic Disease Self-Management Program Thursdays @ 3:00 - 5:30 pm October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 & November 7 Put life back in your life!

This six-session peer-led health education program is for people with any type of ongoing health condition. The classes complement the health care you may already be receiving. The purpose of the CDSMP is to enhance your ability to manage your health and maintain an active and fulfilling lifestyle. You do not need to have a chronic illness to attend; maybe you know or care for someone who does. The workshop is designed to help you feel better, take control of you life and connect with others who have similar health issues or are caring for someone who does. Instructed by Anthony Anello and Alice Daniels through OASIS.

Buckland Room with Erin Cassidy, Assistant Director for Technology and Digital Services Open source software offers alternatives to costly proprietary brand software. Erin will give a talk about what open source software is and the pros and cons of using open source alternatives. She will provide a demonstration of a popular, free alternative to Microsoft Office in the last segment of this program.

Is it just a pyromaniac on the loose or a clever killer? You’re invited to a mystery at the DCL! Look for clues, interrogate suspects, and solve a crime. For ages 18 & up! Are you a fan of whodunnits and crime solving? Discover motive, means and opportunity as you set out to solve the crime. Participants will receive their invitations prior to each event; they will discover who they are upon arrival at the scene of the crime. Additional clues will be revealed as the evening progresses. Senior Fair Senior Scene

3rd Annual Healthy Living Senior Fair Friday, October 25 @ 10:00 am to 2:00 pm In ShoppingTown Mall’s Upper Level. Look for our information booth in the JCPenney’s Court. The DCL is excited to be hosting its 3rd Annual Healthy Living Senior Fair with expanded offerings this year. Up to 50 exhibitors from area organizations, agencies, and businesses will be on hand to share information about their services and programs for seniors.     

Celebrate life and living!

Learn about health care, long-term care, financial planning, elder law, recreation, and other topics. Get free screenings for blood pressure, spine, hearing, and get a flu shot. Discover our series of lectures on a variety of topics of interest to seniors. Look for our flyer in the Library for full details. Enjoy the entertaining sounds of a Barbershop Quartet. TEENS! PRODUCE A VIDEO AND CAPTURE LIVING MEMORIES OF DEWITT. Would you like to learn how to produce professional quality videos? If so, join our Living Memory Video Project, where teens will interview residents of DeWitt about their memories of growing up in DeWitt and Jamesville, then produce videos of the interviews under the guidance of professional videographer and DCL staff member, Scott Mosher. You can chose to interview a relative or a subject chosen by the Library. All interviews will be conducted in the Library, and the videos will be posted to the Library web site! Terrific Thursdays Welcome to Dewitt Community Library’s series of monthly programs developed with input from the DCL’s Homeschoolers Advisory Board. Learn more about what the Library offers, meet with other homeschooling families, and enjoy an activity based on the monthly theme. We’ll have an ongoing activity in an adjacent room set up to keep preschoolers in your group busy during the program. All are welcome.

The Wonderful Honeybee

Do you know how bees make honey in a hive? DCL’s librarian beekeeper Emily W. will present a hands-on program about the amazing honeybee. Join us to learn the importance of honeybees and the challenges they face. You’ll also get to try on a bee suit and taste some local honey. Registration is required for each session. Are you looking to donate items for the Library’s book sale? The DCL accepts most hardcover and paperback fiction or nonfiction, except for dated materials (like almanacs and encyclopedias). Career Connections One-on-One Resume Reviews Need help with your resume? Sign up at the Library or on the Library’s web site (www.dewlib.org) to meet with a Library staff member for individualized help with writing a successful resume and cover letter. Each hourlong tutorial will be held in the Library.

DCL Career Connections Laptop Patrons, ages 16 & up, are encouraged to borrow our career laptop, which includes many special features useful to the job hunter. The laptop contains shortcuts to some of the best career-related sites on the web. Find a quiet corner in the Library to work on your resume and get started on your future!
