5th Annual ‘Healthy Living’ Senior Fair Friday, October 23 @ 10:00 am to 2:00 pm In ShoppingTown Mall’s Upper Level. The DCL will host its 5th Annual ‘Healthy Living’ Senior Fair in ShoppingTown Mall’s upper level. At 1:00pm, CNY Central’s Laura Hand, anchor of the weekend edition of Today in Central New York and the producer of “Weekend’s Best Bets,” “The Week Ahead,” and the “In Touch” events calendar and “CNY in Focus” series, will be our guest speaker. Look for the Library’s information table in the JCPenney’s Court to pick up your guide to the event. More than 50 exhibitors from area organizations, agencies, and businesses will be on hand to share information about their services and programs for older adults.  Get free screenings for blood pressure, spine, hearing, and get a flu shot.  Enjoy the easy listening sounds of the CNY Jazz Trio (10:30 am & 11:30 am)  NEW! Learn exercises to help improve joint and muscle mobility! The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is designed to help those with joint and/or muscle problems achieve improved mobility, muscle strength and endurance in order to perform their daily activities. Learn and perform exercises standing up or sitting in a chair. Dress comfortably. Come to one or all sessions. Registration Encouraged.

A meditative, relaxing art that cultivates the body and improves balance and core strength. Steve Hohm will demonstrate simple steps you can replicate on your own or in a group. Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and footwear you can easily slip off, if needed.

Specialists from the Syracuse Repair Café will fix your stuff! At Syracuse Repair Café, everything centers on making repairs. There will be various experts on hand: electrical, mechanical, sharpening, watch and clock repair, carpentry, and seamstresses. There is no charge or fee, although donations are appreciated, and we may ask that guests pay for certain parts. Toasters, lamps, clothes, bikes, toys, wobbly furniture, and crockery... anything that is broken is welcome and can more than likely be repaired. The specialists in Repair Café almost always have the know-how. Mysteries at the DCL Mystery Book Discussions A book group for all mystery lovers! Discover new authors and old favorites as we read and discuss some of the best tales of murder, deceit, and suspense.

Murder Mystery Party The Ticking of the Clock Friday, October 16 @ 7:00 pm Someone is targeting the wealthy Dewitt family. A mysterious, fractured nursery rhyme is sent to a member of the family, and its chilling verse is being enacted by a crazed killer. You’re invited to a mystery at the DCL! Look for clues, interrogate suspects, and solve a crime. For ages 18 & up! Are you a fan of whodunnits and crime solving? Discover means, motive, and opportunity as you set out to solve the crime. Become your favorite popular fictional characters in the Digital Reader’s Theater and be introduced to the world of dynamic storytelling. Learn about digital audio recording, and podcasting as you create your informally staged production of a popular book or two.

Do you like animation and comics? Join us for this hands-on program and learn how to create your own comic strips, cartoons, and animations using free software and webbased computer programs such as Chogger, Comic Master, and more.

For ages 8 - 16.

Come in and discover MaKey MaKey. This kit allows you to turn everyday objects into a computer keyboard or controller. Play computers games using Play-Doh or use bananas as keys for a piano. Put your design skills to the test and create your own game controllers out of cardboard, tin foil, or other items supplied. Refreshments served.

You’re Invited! Book Birthday Party

Library Assistant Lauri Fortino introduces her debut children’s picture book, The Peddler’s Bed. Come hear the story (geared for ages 3 to 7), then make crafts based on the book. Decorate a pillow case, color a bed picture, or create a whimsical tree. See a tabletop replica of the peddler’s bed, made by Joe Kolceski. And enjoy delicious refreshments, including birthday cake! Book signing follows. Copies of the book will be available for sale. Thanks to Barnes & Noble DeWitt, a percentage of sales will go to benefit the Library.

Coming Soon DCL DISCOVERY TO GO Discovery to Go is a special collection of math, science, engineering and technology items that patrons can either use in the library or checkout with an adult library card. Items for checkout at DCL will include tabletop telescopes, microscopes, math manipulatives, rocks and minerals collections and even a human torso model.

The DCL received a special New York State Legislative grant through former Assemblyman Sam Roberts office to purchase the collection and hopes to make Discovery to Go items available for checkout starting in October 2015.
