6th Annual ‘Healthy Living’ Senior Fair Friday, October 21 @ 10:00 am to 2:00 pm In ShoppingTown Mall’s Upper Level.

The DCL will host its 6th Annual ‘Healthy Living’ Senior Fair in ShoppingTown Mall’s upper level. This year we are proud to partner with more than fifty area organizations, businesses and agencies that provide support to seniors and those who care for them. Look for the Library’s information table in the former JCPenney’s Court to pick up your event guide. Representatives from more than 50 exhibitors from area organizations, agencies, and businesses will be on hand to share information about their services, programs, and activities for older adults.  Get free screenings for blood pressure, hearing, and more.  Flu, shingles, and pneumonia shots available (Insurance accepted).  Learn about health care, long-term care, financial planning, elder law, and other topics. 

Get Moving Arthritis Foundation Exercise Class Fridays @ 10:45 am November 11, 18 & 25 Learn exercises to help improve joint and muscle mobility! The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is designed to help those with joint and/or muscle problems achieve improved mobility, muscle strength and endurance in order to perform their daily activities. Learn and perform exercises standing up or sitting in a chair. Dress comfortably. Come to one or all sessions. Registration Encouraged. An introduction to the practice of tai chi. Best for beginners with a brief demo of introductory moves.

Try Tai Chi Fridays @ 2:00pm October 14, 21 & 28

A meditative, relaxing art that cultivates the body and improves balance and core strength. Steve Hohm will demonstrate simple steps you can replicate on your own or in a group. Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and footwear you can easily slip off, if needed. Registration Encouraged.

Red Cross Disaster Preparedness Monday, Oct. 3 @ 7:00 pm

Are you prepared in the event of a disaster? What should you have on hand in the event of an emergency? Learn how to stay safe in any emergency. Get tips on the various ways to prepare, respond, and recover in the event of an emergency. There will be a raffle for a free safety item. Registration Encouraged. About the Speaker: Karen Szczesniak is a Disaster Preparedness Associate with the American Red Cross.

Eligibility for Chronic Care Medicaid: Your Questions Answered Monday, Sept. 19 @ 5:30—7:00 pm

What are the Medicaid eligibility requirements for nursing home and chronic care in our community? Get an overview of the application process, income and resource limits, spousal issues, look back periods, transfers of assets and penalty periods. Registration Encouraged. About the Speaker: Morgan R. Thurston is an Assistant Welfare Attorney with the Onondaga County Department of Social Services where he serves as the attorney for the Chronic Care and Protective Services for Adults Units. He is also a partner of Moen & Thurston, a general practice firm with a primary emphasis on estate planning, real estate and income taxation. He is a member of the Estate Planning Council of Central NY, New York State Bar Elder Law Section and co-chair of the Syracuse Area Domestic Violence Coalition's Elder Abuse Committee.

The Battles of Saratoga Thurs., September 29 @ 7:00 pm

Three Days at Gettysburg Thurs., November 10 @ 7:00 pm

The Battles of Saratoga have been viewed as the Turning Point of the Revolutionary War. In September & October 1777, two battles were fought in the vicinity of Saratoga, NY, turning the tide of war in favor of the Americans. Learn more about this piece of New York’s valiant history.

From July 1 to July 3, 1863, one of the largest and bloodiest battles in the Western hemisphere was fought in a corner of Pennsylvania. In the end, the Union won, and Lee’s Confederate Army was forced back to Virginia. Learn about those three days that resulted in a victory and one of the most famous speeches in American history.

The Longest Day Thurs., December 1 @ 7:00 pm Operation Overlord was launched on June 6, 1944. The result was the successful landing of Ally troops on the coast of Normandy, France. Learn about the planning and execution of what has become known as D-Day, the moment when the Allies began the liberation of Nazioccupied Europe.

You’re invited to a mystery at the DCL! Look for clues, interrogate suspects, and solve a crime. An inspector from Interpol has infiltrated a Venetian Ball, where everyone is in masquerade, to ferret out some guilty personage as yet unknown. Unfortunately, his quarry has unmasked the inspector who will drink his last, leaving the guests to unearth whodunit.

Test your detective wits. As the family gathers at Grandma’s house for Thanksgiving, the next door neighbor is found dead in the basement. Who killed the neighbor? Join fellow sleuths, follow the clues, and solve the case. Refreshments will be served. Registration Required.

Are you a fan of whodunnits and crime solving? Discover means, motive, and opportunity as you set out to solve the crime. Additional clues will be revealed as the evening progresses. There’s plenty of time to solve the case, so be sure to enjoy the provided refreshments.

Discovery to Go

Discovery To Go STEM Brainstorms Come and learn with library staff as we dive into the new DTG kits. Each month, we will bring out a selection of DTG equipment and explore a specific theme while thinking about ways to support age-appropriate learning with these items. This is unstructured time to allow kids and their parents a change to try out, play, and learn with our Discovery to Go collection. Parents and educators can also preview the kits and develop lessons to incorporate these hands-on activity sets into their lessons during these sessions. All sessions are in the Buckland Room from 12:00 to 1:00pm. Registration Encouraged. Wednesday, September 28 - Surprising Shapes Tangrams, Pattern Blocks, Geoboards, and Shapes kits. Wednesday, October 26 - Moving Mechanicals Use Algodoo software, Tinkerbox App, and K’Nex kits to explore how objects work and move together.

Bring your favorite picture book (or choose one from the picture book shelves), and learn how to write a review for it. Your review will tell other kids how great the book is so that they will want to read it too! The Library will print your book review in an upcoming newsletter. Plus, you will earn a Picture Book Month certificate for participating! Picture Book Month is an international literacy initiative that celebrates print picture books during the month of November.

Children’s Programs STORYTIMES

Registration is required for all storytime sessions unless otherwise noted. Babies and Books NEW! Mondays @ 10:30am September 12 to November 21 For ages birth to 18 months. This lively storytime helps babies experience sounds and the structure of language through rhythm, rhyme and repetition. Enjoy lap and bouncing rhymes, short books and songs. Plan on a fifteen-minute program with time for baby and caregiver socialization afterwards. Story Play NEW! Tuesdays @ 10:30am September 6 to November 22 For ages birth to 5 years old. This fun, informal storytime combines stories with play time. Did you know Play = Learning? Enjoy stories, discover wonderful toys, and meet new friends. We may even do an art project. Toddler Time Wednesdays @ 10:30am September 7 to November 23 For ages 18 months to 36 months. This active storytime helps toddlers enhance their social, emotional and language development. Enjoy stories, music and movement followed by a coloring sheet or simple craft.

Are you a lover of all things Minecraft? Join us for our after-hours Minecraft program! Imagine it! Create it! Build it with friends! Snacks will be served. Career Connections One-on-One Resume Reviews

Need help with your resume? Sign up at the Library or on the Library’s web site (www.dewlib.org) to meet with a Library staff member for individualized help with writing a successful resume and cover letter. Each hour-long tutorial will be held in the Library.

DCL Career Connections Laptop Patrons, ages 16 & up, are encouraged to borrow our career laptop, which includes many special features useful to the job hunter. The laptop contains shortcuts to some of the best career-related sites on the web. Find a quiet corner in the Library to work on your resume and get started on your future!
