Age Guidelines For Summer Programs: Our librarians have planned a variety of activities for children of all ages. Each event is carefully designed with a particular age group in mind. Please observe age requirements listed.

For ages birth to 5 years old. The Little Heroes Summer Reading Program helps parents and children build important early literacy skills. Stop by the Library to register and pick up an activity sheet to share with your child. Complete the activities on the sheet and bring it back to the Library and receive a prize.

You’re encouraged to read (or listen to) the books you want. Record your reading adventures in your very own Hero’s Journal! Then visit the Library and share the stories you've read with a librarian. A prize will be given out each week to encourage you to explore the world of books. Children, in preschool through Grade 5, can register at any time during the program’s run.

This program runs for the months of July and August. Participate for one or both months.

Monday, June 29 - Monday, August 17 For grades 6 & up. Teens, discover the summer reading program that has been upgraded to include more than just reading. Teens will have the opportunity to earn “badges” by completing tasks such as creating a meal, writing a poem, composing a song, attending a library program, and many more. The DCL will award prizes for the most badges earned as well as the most creative project. Teens may still participate in the traditional reading club as well.

Can it be done? If participants of the Children’s Summer Reading program, “Every Hero Has a Story”, read a combined total of 4,000 books before Monday, August 17, Miss Jenny and Miss Kelly will get Silly Stringed!

Kick-Off Party Monday, June 29 @ 2:00-4:00 pm Summer reading begins with crafts, face painting, and more! Parents can learn about our Summer Reading Program, which encourages children to read. Children in preschool through 5th Grade can register for our Children’s Summer Reading Program.

The award for the NYS Summer Reading Teen Video Challenge will be presented to the winner Athena Summers at the event. See more details on page 7.

End of Summer Party Monday, August 17 @ 2:00-4:00 pm For children in preschool through 5th Grade who are registered for our Summer Reading Program at the DCL! Celebrate with pizza, crafts and more! Find out if DCL summer readers reached this year’s goal. No registration necessary for either event.

Moreland the Magician “There’s a Hero at Your Library” Show Thursday, July 9 @ 6:30pm Moreland the Magician is on the hunt for heroes—everyday heroes, famous heroes, and superheroes—in the library. This high-energy 45-minute show blends magic, puppetry, comedy, audience participation, and a musical melodrama skit, starring heroes (children) from the audience. Recommended for Grades Pre-K and up!

Dan the Snakeman Monday, July 13 @ 6:30pm Dan the Snakeman brings his educational show to the Library! Learn about snakes and reptiles and their importance to the environment. Ask questions and interact with the critters. For all ages!

Music with Donna B Saturday, July 18 @ 11:00am Join Donna Butterfield of Milk & Cookies for a unique, interactive musical story experience. Puppeteer Nancy Sander presents “The Reluctant Dragon.” Based on the classic story by Kenneth Grahame about a poetry loving dragon, guarantees to bring lots of laughter along with a little audience participation. Recommended for pre-K through AARP!

Storytimes BABY BOP Mondays @ 10:30 am Jun 29 | Jul 6, 13, 20, 27 | Aug 3, 10 & 17 Wednesdays @ 10:30 July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 | Aug 5, 12 & 19 For ages birth - 24 months

This lively storytime is appropriate for babies and their caregivers. Come ready to participate and help your child develop essential early literacy skills as we share books, enjoy music and movement, and sing songs and nursery rhymes. Each session lasts 15 - 20 minutes, followed by playtime.

TODDLER TIME! TUESDAYS @ 10:30 am Jun 30 | Jul 7, 14, 21, 28 | Aug 4, 11 & 18 For ages 24 - 36 months

This fun and active storytime is for toddlers and their caregivers. Encourage their activity by joining us for stories, rhymes, and songs. Each session lasts about 30 minutes followed by coloring and playtime.

PRESCHOOL STORYTIMES THURSDAYS @ 10:30 am Jul 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 | Aug 6, 13 & 20 For ages 3 - 5 years

Join Miss Jenny for an entertaining storytime! Each 30 minute session includes themed-stories, fingerplays, and songs. A simple craft follows. Younger siblings welcome!

TODDLER DANCE PARTY Fridays @ 10:30 am June 19, July 17 & August 14 For ages 18 months - 5 years old. Come shake your sillies out and dance with your friends! There will be musical instruments, bubbles, and more. Toddler, preschoolers, and their parents/caregivers will enjoy listening and dancing to some favorite and new tunes. No registration necessary.

BRICKS 4 KIDZ DEMO CLASS Monday, July 21 @ 1:00 pm

Be creative with your little one! Decorate a cardboard box to be a car and enjoy a couple of short movies based on picture books before “driving” home. Registration Required.

Many kids already know how to build with Lego bricks. With a little coaching, they can learn engineering, architecture, and physics concepts while using the plastic pieces. Join us for this free demo class presented by Bricks 4 Kidz—CNY. Registration Required.

DROP IN AND PLAY MONDAYS | 10:30am to 12:00pm June 1, 8, 15 & 22 For ages birth to 5 years old.

Stop in with your child for free play at the library. We’ll put out the toys, and you can make the fun. Stay for a half hour or most of the morning. Please note: library staff will not be in the room for the entire event, care-givers are in charge of supervising their youngsters. No Registration Necessary.

BUTTERFLY HEROES Monday, July 27 @ 10:30am For ages 5 & up.

Learn about Eastern butterflies in this beautiful slide presentation by Jerry Schneider. Audience will learn the how, where and when of the amazing Monarch migration, in addition to facts about butterflies and the factors contributing to their populations, which vary from year to year. And make a wonderful butterfly T-shirt. Please bring your own white t-shirts (heavy, 100% cotton) from home to participate in this craft. No Registration Necessary.

READ WITH A SUPERHERO LIBRARY DOG Tuesdays @ 11:00am June 30, July 28 & August 18 For ages 5 - 12.

Therapy dogs are the superheroes of the canine world. They even help kids with literacy! Each child will spend up to 10 minutes one-on-one with the library dog reading aloud or to themselves. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis starting at 10:00am at the Reference Desk on the day of each session for that day’s available slots. 6 slots available per session.

ADVENTURES IN THE WILDERNESS Thursday, August 6 @ 2:00pm For Grades K - 5.

The Adirondack Museum visits the DCL! Come and learn about the heroes of the Adirondack Mountains. The Adirondack guide of yesteryear was woods-wise and independent; a skilled hunter, fisherman and cook; and a shrewd judge of character. Explore the life, skills, and work of these intrepid characters and compare the 19th century woodsman to today’s guides. Sponsored by the Friends of the DeWitt Community Library. We’re transforming the program room into a disco party complete with lights, classic disco tunes, bubbles and more. We’ll also have snacks and crafts, so bring the entire family. For ages 5 & up. Make superheroes out of Perler Beads. Create your own superhero or use our template using these plastic beads and we’ll fuse them together.

For ages 8 & up. Come hear a story about a superhero. Then design your very own superhero. After creating your own superhero, write and draw a comic strip about him or her. If time permits, we can share what you created with each other.

Cape & Mask Creation

DeWitt Community Library will be offering awesome crafts to beachgoers at Jamesville Beach Park. Children’s Librarian Jennifer Burke and Paralibrarian for Children’s Services Kelly Sickler will be hosting four fun sessions. Come for one or all four! The DCL will provide all supplies, except for t-shirts to dye. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

For ages 5 & up. Make Rocket Power Jet-Packs out of recycled plastic soda bottles. 3...2...1...Blast off!

Friday, July 17 @ 2:00pm

For ages 5 - 11. Come as you are (your secret identity) and leave as your favorite superhero. We will have all the supplies needed to create a cape and mask. Both can be decorated any way you wish. Who will you become?

MAKE IT! Thursday, July 23 @ 2:00pm

For Grades 3 - 6. Come and learn about MaKey Makey. This kit allows you to turn everyday objects into a computer keyboard. Examples include playing computer games using Play-Doh and using bananas as keys for a piano.

TEEN PAGE Digital Readers’ Theatre Saturday, June 27 @ 12:00 - 2:00pm For ages 8 - 16. Become your favorite popular fictional characters in the Digital Reader’s Theater, part of the DCL’s new Digital Production Club. Learn about digital audio recording, and performance, as you create your informally staged production of a popular book or two. Or feel free to bring in your own script to share with the group. Summer Kick-Off Party Award Presentation Monday, June 29 @ 2:00-4:00 pm Athena Summers, 14, of East Syracuse, was selected as the winner of the 2015 NYS Teen Video Challenge. Her 51-second video “Unmask Your Imagination” was filmed at the DeWitt Community Library and features performances by her and her friend Emma Wilson. The winning video was created as part of the DCL’s new Digital Production Club (DPC) run by Scott Mosher, DCL paralibrarian for technology. Karen Balsen, coordinator of the Summer Reading Program at the NYS Department of Education, will present Athena and Emma awards and recognition at the DeWitt Community Library’s Summer Reading Kick-Off Party on Monday, June 29th.

Sprockets to Spokes: An Adventure in Basic Bike Repair Friday, July 10 @ 7:00 pm

You already know how to ride a bike, but do you know how to repair one? Roll up your sleeves, grab a wrench, and learn how to care for your bike and keep it in good working order. Topics include:  Chain Maintenance  Tire Maintenance  Brake Tuning  Basic Bike Fitting For ages 8 & up! Registration Required. About the Speaker: Ben Wormuth is a Jamesville-DeWitt High School student with a passion for mountain biking, bike repair, and restoring vintage bikes. He’s currently tearing apart and restoring a 1974 Columbia Sports III.

The Great Outdoors Create Your Edible Garden Tuesdays @ 7-8 pm JUNE 9—Controlling Garden Pests Gardens attract pests. Learn how to deal with all kinds, including groundhogs, deer, rabbits, borers, and beetles. JULY 7—Storing and Preserving Your Harvest Freezing, canning, dehydrating, storing. What are your options for preserving what you grow (or buy from farmers). About the Speaker: John Allen has been growing vegetables in his suburban yard for more than thirty years. Instrumental in forming Edible Gardening in CNY (encourages people to grow some of their own food, in their own yards), he will use photographs from his own yard to illustrate talking points. Star Gazing: Your Guide to the Summer Sky Thursday, June 25 @ 7:00 pm

Paddleboarding in CNY Thursday, July 23 @ 7:00pm Learn the ins and outs of paddleboarding in CNY! Paddleboards are lighter and easier to transport than kayaks and CNY has plenty of spots to put the board to use. Take off and get fit sitting or standing. All you need is a board, a paddle, life vest and whistle. Learn what you need to know to paddleboard your way to an active life. Try out a paddleboard at the event so you can get a feel for it. Young-at-hearts are welcome!

Discover motive, means and opportunity as you set out to solve the crime. Additional clues will be revealed as the evening progresses. There’s plenty of time to solve the crime, so be sure to enjoy the provided refreshments. A good time will be had by all!

About the Speaker: Robert Steingraber lives in Syracuse and has practiced Wicca for over 40 years. He has lectured on the topics of Wicca and Reincarnation for many years. Previously he spoke about Reincarnation & Past Life Recall at the DCL.
