Celebrating the Irish Language in the 21st Century Tuesday, March 18 @ 7:00 pm Discover the surprising status of the Irish Language in 2014. An increase in international interest in learning Irish and the increasing availability of Gaelscoileanna (schools that teach primarily in Irish) in Ireland are highlighted in this talk. Learn about innovative programs such as Coláiste Lurgan, the different dialects of Irish, and how you can learn the language. Participants will learn simple words and phrases in Irish and hear (possibly sing!) a song or two as Gaeilge (in Irish). A great introduction for anyone with an interest in learning – or even learning about – the Irish language. Sponsored by the Central New York Chapter-Irish American Cultural Institute, Inc. (CNY-IACI) About the Speaker: John LaParo, a Syracuse attorney conversant with the Irish language, teaches Irish classes for the CNY-IACI. In the Garden & Music Create Your Edible Garden Mondays @ 7-8 pm

APRIL 14—Plan Your Garden Planning a garden, including what are the easiest plants to grow and where to locate the garden. APRIL 28—Plant Your Seeds Starting seeds and transplanting seedlings. Basically, how to get some plants and how and when to get them into the soil. MAY 19—Protect Your Plants Pests to watch out for. This includes certain insects and larger creatures such as rabbits, groundhogs, and deer. Also includes how to deal with some of them. About the Speaker: John Allen is a member of Edible Gardening CNY, a group of people interested in backyard vegetable and fruit growing.

CNY Birding: Songbirds Return Thursday, May 15 @ 2:00 pm May marks the height of songbird migration through Central New York. 90 species of migrants come to spend summer here or move on to locations further north. Learn about some of these species, including the Great Crested Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Vireo, Cerulean Warbler, and Blackburnian Warbler. Discover the bright colors and varied patterns represented by some of our smallest songbirds. About the Speaker: Gene Huggins returns to the DCL for another look at CNY birding. He has been an active birder for 57 years in Central New York. He began his hobby by visiting fields, forests, and ponds near his hometown of Waterville, NY. He is President of the Onondaga Audubon Society, a member of the American Birding Association, and NYS Ornithological Association.

For centuries, people have reported seeing large, hairy, manlike creatures in the forests and mountains of the worlds. There have even been sightings in Central New York! What could these beasts be?

It lives in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. A creature described as part horse, with bat wings, hooves, and hair. Some say it is the Devil’s spawn. The Legend began with the Leeds family and has grown. What could it be? Whatever it is, it lent its name to an NHL hockey team—the Jersey Devils.

Point Pleasant, West Virginia, was a sleepy little town until people reported seeing a strange, huge bat-like creature hanging out at a local abandoned TNT factory. It appeared in yards, on porches, and even chased people in their cars. What could it be?

Everyone has heard of the famous Loch Ness monster in Scotland, affectionately known as Nessie. But just about every country in the world claims its own lake monster, including New York’s Champ. What could they be?

Registration is encouraged for these popular programs! Cheryl Pula returns to the DCL for more exciting “moments in history” programs. She previously presented “Crime Spree,” a look at famous unsolved mysteries about Lizzie Borden, the Lindbergh Kidnapping, and Black Dahlia, and “Battle Royale” about turning points in the Revolutionary, Civil, and Second World wars.

This Summer, the DCL will be offering a new online book club, The Cozy Chair. Much like a traditional face-to-face book club, The Cozy Chair discussions will offer more opportunities for everyone to share and chat about our favorite books. Currently, there are four groups planned for the initial launch, including Armchair Sleuths for mystery lovers, and Armchair Explorers for popular science readers.

Official book titles for each group will be revealed in the 2014 Summer Program Guide. The library staff also will be distributing bookmarks in select books relating to Cozy Chair books. The bookmarks will contain information on signing up and participating in our online groups. Keep an eye out for these bookmarks and more information about our online book clubs. We hope to see you online, commenting, mingling, and sharing your reading experiences with fellow booklovers.

You’re invited to a mystery at the DCL! Look for clues, interrogate suspects, and solve a crime. For ages 18 & up! Are you a fan of whodunnits and crime solving? Discover motive, means and opportunity as you set out to solve the crime. Participants will receive their invitations prior to each event; they will discover who they are upon arrival at the scene of the crime. Additional clues will be revealed as the evening progresses. Learn about how to find and use digital images from the web and properly cite the works you use to give the creators their due. Earth Day & the Water Cycle

Thursday, April 17 at 11:30am For grades K - 12. We all live on a planet that's 70% water, but what does that water do when it's not in our glass? Join us for a hands-on demonstration of the water cycle to learn about the importance of watersheds and how you can impact your watershed today. Presented by Adrienne Canino, from Onondaga Earth Corps, a local group that empowers youth to be stewards of their community and environment. Registration is required for each session. Monday, March 10 at 10:00 am to 12:00 pm For birth to 5 years old. Trains and building blocks and toys! Bring your child to the library for this informal drop-in play session. Stay for fifteen minutes or the full two hours. We'll put out our coolest toys, and you can make the fun!

Career Connections One-on-One Resume Reviews Need help with your resume? Sign up at the Library or on the Library’s web site (www.dewlib.org) to meet with a Library staff member for individualized help with writing a successful resume and cover letter. Each hourlong tutorial will be held in the Library.

DCL Career Connections Laptop Patrons, ages 16 & up, are encouraged to borrow our career laptop, which includes many special features useful to the job hunter. The laptop contains shortcuts to some of the best career-related sites on the web. Find a quiet corner in the Library to work on your resume and get started on your future!
